Saffie's Guide to Brewmaster

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 05:19 AM PDT

Introduction

Hey guys, its Saffie here, I'm a high rank Brew spammer. Just to say a bit about myself, my highest rank this season was 129, I've been hovering around 200-300 rank most of this season mostly first picking Brew. I don't know if it means much but I've been rank 1 on opendota on Brew most of this season and about 30~on Dotabuff. I decided to share what I know about Brew with reddit as I feel like its a hero, when played well, can make you win very easy on lower rating games as the enemy wouldn't know how to play against it and an offlane hero who's both good on the lane to diminish enemy carries farm as well as carry itself is the best way to consistently win with bad teammates.

Also, I do some coaching and started streaming in english recently on: www.twitch.tv/saffie if you are interested. (Now Live)

Strengths of Brewmaster on Lane

You can see the laning stage as an example on singsings video from a few months ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upNndzKIMx0&t=1s

The reason I love this hero is that it makes the enemy carry tilt when not completely shut down on lane. My personal move is to make them lose last hits, denying and doing my taunt. Especially in this meta where carries expect to farm and deny easily they are really not used to being contested by 1 hero so much and find themselves struggling and don't know what to do other than blaming their supports or swapping lanes according to whatever hero they have.

But actual strength of drunken haze, especially against good opponents come from the fact that you don't let the enemy carry equalize his lane. Sure you can get a lot of denies when not contested or overall make the enemy carry lose a lot of last hits but you can't do that for a long time against 2-3 heroes sitting on the lane trying to harass you out. By manipulating creep aggro, denying aggressively and not letting the enemy carry deny aggressively you will consistently push the lane on your side and get that sweet, free experience.

Be mindful of the enemy support pulling to equalize the lane back, drunken haze comes in handy here too as you can almost always make it to the hard camp and use it on the jungle creeps to not let them pull through, but make sure you're not too far away or they might not switch aggro to you.

When it comes to skill builds I find myself mostly doing a 2-2-1, but against some hard lanes or certain heroes like Razor or Huskar you might want to max your drunken haze, while if you're having help on the lane from your position 4 player you might want to max your clap.

Laning phase items are usually almost always the same with the main difference being boots. Wand and soul ring give you a lot of sustain on the lane while helping you farm with thunder clap, and I usually am fine with just having brown boots before getting dagger if the lane isn't easy and getting a phase boots if I can run at the enemy and kill or pressure them.

Once you get level 6 your kill potential on the lane becomes scary. You can start playing more aggressively as you can just split in a bad situation and get a counter kill and run, the enemy carry will feel pressured and find it harder to farm against you. I usually ask for one of my supports to rotate to the offlane to kill the safelaner with me as I think most of the time thats the best way to use split, but in some cases, especially if your mid is struggling against an SF or something not so mobile you might want to smoke mid and use your first split to help mid out. Don't forget that in this pre dagger situations its far more beneficial to have max drunken haze as you want to use the @ slow into split to not let the enemies just run away from you as soon as you split.

Weaknesses of Brewmaster on Lane

Brew has no mobility, if the enemy 4 position decides to just sit on you and not let you do anything, or you're vs some really strong dual lane you will not get much, but thats how offlane works nowadays, getting 3v1'd makes you useless but creates a lot of space for your teammates, in these cases where I struggle and can't get much I try to play more supporty and make some smaller items to help my team like HoTD or Vlads. Getting sacrificed never feels good but don't let it get to you and tilt, just be calm and try to come back as best as you can and think of the space you've created for your other 2 cores.

Usually carries who can dispel themselves or consistently get last hits with their low mana cost spells or even harasses you at the same time will give you a hard time. People on high ratings usually pick Jugger or Naix against me if they want to have a good lane.

Strengths of Brew in the Mid-Game

When you're brew it is a given that you play around your ulti, but in small skirmishes, you're still strong with your dagger, clap, crit combo and can more or less neutralize a right click core like OD by just putting drunken haze on him, so don't be too afraid to do things when you don't have Primal Split. Just don't go for big teamfights or objectives. You farm relatively fast spamming clap with soul ring and pushing out lanes so try to get your items up. My favorite item by far on Brew is Radiance, followed by BKB. Radiance stays on your Earth Spirit once you split and does a lot of aoe damage during your ulti in teamfights. It also boosts your farming speed a lot and gives you bigger crits in skirmishes. BKB over lotus almost every game because I love being in your face with BKB for the duration of it and just right clicking the enemy because usually no1 wants to go on you with your evasion and magic immunity, so you can milk every drop of BKB's duration before using Primal Split.

Dont be afraid of microing when it comes to Brew, its not incredibly hard, you might have troubles when you first start playing him but you will get used to it the more you play. During your ulti your objective is to stay on 1 target with your pandas, using your stun and your wind walk for extra damage/lockdown while using tornado on a farmed core or a saving hero to basically play the fight 4v5. Dont forget wind walk has a fade time similar to bounty hunter shadow walk and you can get 2 hits off with the extra damage. A lot of brew players use the dispel of the wind panda just to dispel the tornado but in reality this is one of the most OP spells in the game.

Dispel

Why is Dispel one of the most OP spells in the game in my opinion? Because its very versatile and even the highest rating players sometimes don't use it to its full potential. Most people on reddit probably know about dispelling illusions to do 1000 magic damage, which makes brew amazing against heroes like CK or PL in the mid game since I remember Khezu's stream highlight about it making the front page a couple months ago. But did you also know you can destroy visage birds with one shot? Or that warlock golem dies in 2 dispels? There are a lot of strong summons in the game that get countered by this spell, not just illusions.

Second use of this spell is aggressively dispelling things, like GA or Lone Druid's Rabid, when you play Brew you should pay attention to which buffs are dispellable and which are not. Dispelling certain buffs can mean the difference between killing a hero and having them kill you.

Third and least utilized way to use Dispel is defensive dispel. I still remember how grateful my PL was that I dispelled the orchid debuff on him that would have killed him otherwise which lead us to win the game. It is a basic dispel so you can basically dispel anything lotus orb can on an aoe scale. If you don't think thats OP, imagine getting a 5 man treant ulti on the enemy team just to have the brew instantly dispel everyone.

Weakness of Brew Mid-Game

A lot of people tend to pick heroes like Gyro or Luna against a Brew just to be able to deal with the brew split after its used. It is very easy for a gyro with a BKB to kill the entire Primal Split in a matter of seconds so its something you definitely have to pay attention to while splitting mid game. Don't think you're invulnerable as some heroes have no problem dealing with the pandas. In these scenarios you have to get level 20 as soon as possible to get the health talent for pandas and perhaps pick a vlads/ac for the extra armor aura.

Brew is also obviously weak to getting CC'ed and not being able to get the split off in teamfights. A lot of the times I get a Doom on the other team but its not necessarily that hard to play against unless you're super shut down on lane and struggling to get items. A clockwerk can be very hard to play against but a good player adapts to those rough situations and finds a solution to them, and others copy them. So I saw Moo rush a Force Staff and skip the dagger vs clock, and its been working out great so far.

Brew struggles to kill high mobility heroes in teamfights if you don't have teammates helping you lock them down like QOP, Puck or Storm so sometimes its better to get an Orchid or Hex if you feel like your Primal is being kited and the enemies are easily resetting.

Strengths of Brew in the late game

This hero becomes an absolute beast at level 25 with the CD reduction talent, you can spam it to your hearts desire as long as you have a soul ring and be incredibly annoying and hard to deal with for the enemy team. Sometimes I even use it to scout or shove out the lanes with the wind/fire spirits while holding the earth back in high tension late game situations.

Primal Split is great for sieging high ground, you can just jump and Split while having the Earth Panda attack the tower with his bonus damage and keeping a core lifted on the background to not let the enemy initiate on you, in this case its better to just secure objectives and go back to not let the enemy jump you while you don't have your Split but as everyone hates sieging against tinker, this is one of the better solutions to sieging vs heroes that hold high ground very well.

Your right click is nothing to scoff at, with levels and items you become strong enough to burst people down especially if you get lucky with crits.

To wrap things up

I asked my friend Moh who is a top 100-200 rank carry player to write his thoughts and he said:

"Even when we shut him down to the extreme he still manages to be a threat who shouldn't be treated lightly. If he manages to have a good game the game will be over because he manages to use his advantage to the fullest and goes different item builds each game. The most annoying part of playing against Saffie is the laning stage. He manages to use his drunken haze to perfection which makes you tilt really hard and almost impossible to play against. You want to cs? Miss. You want to push? Makes the creep agro him with drunken haze. You want to trade hits? You lose that battle. Even if you counter pick him he will be a menace in teamfights."

So yeah, I suggest playing Brewmaster if you feel like your carries usually can't carry but if you play carry you will have no space. Brew is a hero with a lot of control, damage, sieging ability and teamfight strength. This versatility makes him one of the best heroes to master in my opinion. Thanks for reading my guide and if you have any questions feel free to ask in comments or on the stream as I try to answer everything as much as possible while streaming.

71 (Coach for Mineski) Appreciation Thread

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 12:12 AM PDT

Just a shout-out for 71, really appreciate him from bringing the team together and working his magic on them. The man must have worked his ass off overnight with team statistics and draft preparations. I barely recognize this Mineski from 3 months ago where Moon was only known for Mirana, Puck, NB for his NS etc.

Just in case you guys are not familiar with the Chinese scene, the guy has a deep understanding of the game but doesn't play the game much, so a majority of Chinese players don't really respect his ideas. When he suggested that the Chinese teams should innovate more (play more like the western teams, especially EG's style last time) he got a bit of flak from the Chinese community and a majority of the Chinese scene started flaming him. He became sort of an outcast in China, which is why he had to come over to Mineski. Regardless, so happy he's finding success with Mineski, hope they lift the trophy!

What more can you ask from him? Surprised he's not getting more attention, he's a big reason why TNC is doing so well. That was the best mid tiny play I have seen in a while.
