F-in' Druids, How Do They Work? - A Quick Overview of Druids in Warcraft

Posted: 15 Mar 2018 09:06 AM PDT

I've been seeing a lot of people talking about druids, who should and shouldn't be them, and their history a lot recently. In the wake of the Zandalari Druid reveal, and now the Kul Tiran Druid's Bear Form reveal, a lot of people have been talking about Druids. Unfortunately, a lot of the things said are, however, false. I'd like to quickly recap the history of Druids, what it means to be a Druid, and the newest Druid races we're being introduced to.

Malfurion Stormrage was the first Night Elf druid, and as far as we know the first Mortal Druid. His tutelage under the Demi-God Cenarius cemented Malfurion into Azeroth's history. He would later form a group of Druids known as the Cenarion Circle who continues to govern the teaching of Druidism to modern-day Azeroth. It should be noted that some lore implied that Tauren were taught Druidism by Cenarius first, but this was later contradicted and is most likely non-canonical. Malfurion taught Hamuul Runetotem druidic magic after the Third War, who in turn taught the newly-conjoined Tauren tribes.

Before I go on, I'd like to make an important distinction: Nature Magic is not necessarily Druidic Magic. The kind of magic a Druid uses is unique to their very specific training. For instance, only a Druid can shapeshift using Nature Magic. People often point to the Harvest Witches of Gilneas as Human Druids, but this is simply incorrect. Harvest Witches used Nature Magic, not Druidic Magic. It wasn't until the Gilnean's contact with the Night Elves and joining the Alliance did they first meet real Druids and start learning Druidic magic. Much like the Tauren before them, the Harvest Witches' pre-existing relationship to Nature magic most likely increased their affinity to Druidic magic (not to mention that the Worgen Curse amplified their Nature magic, as well). Same goes for the Darkspear Trolls, who, like all Trolls, have a reverence for The Loa as well as Nature Magic. However, unlike the Worgen, the Trolls were taught Druidism directly from the source, ie. the Wild God Gonk. After learning Druidic magic and reclaiming the Echo Isles the Trolls were accepted into the Cenarion Circle, as well. Troll Druid players are Trolls that started Druidic training after the reclamation of the Echo Isles, and therefore were most likely taught by the Cenarion Circle, like Zen'kiki. This is important to remember for later.

With Battle for Azeroth we're getting new Allied Races, one of which is Zandalari Trolls. The Zandalari were at one point the most powerful empire on Azeroth and have resented losing their dominion to the Night Elves for thousands of years. Around the events of Cataclysm the Zandalari decided to try and retake the world and expand their empire, absorbing the Gurubashi and Amani tribes but were thwarted by the Horde and Alliance. In Mists of Pandaria the Zandalari tried resurrecting the Thunder King in their bid to reconquer the world. Once again they were defeated by the Horde and Alliance.

Much like the Darkspear, the Zandalari also have deep reverence for the Loa. While we have not explicitly seen Zandalari Druids before in-game, it's possible that the ancient Zandalari Empire could have learned Druidism in a similar way that the Darkspear did. Isolated from the rest of Azeroth, it's completely within reason that the Zandalari Trolls were taught Druidism in a similar way that Malfurion was. However, instead of being taught Druidism by Cenarius and basing their beast forms off of Wild Gods like Ashamane and Ursol, the Zandalari would have based their Druidic Forms off of their native Wild Gods/Loa like Gonk. This explains their unique Druid forms, and also explains why Darkspear player characters didn't get unique Druid forms even though the first Darkspear Druids learned Druidism directly from the Loa; the Darkspear player characters were taught Druidism through the Cenarion Circle, unlike the Zandalari players.

That being said Zen'tabra and the other Darkspear Druids who liberated the Echo Isles should have beast forms similar to the Zandalari, but that's beside the point.

On the other hand, we've seen Kul Tiran Druids in BfA Alpha. This is what's interesting, to me. According to what we already know, there's no reason the Kul Tiran people should know Druidic Magic. If anything they should be just like the Harvest Witches of Gilneas; people who use Nature Magic, but not Druids. But the key here is according to what we already know. There's likely a reason why Kul Tiran Druids exist, we just don't know why yet. Because Kul Tirans don't share the same kind of models as other races, much like the Zandalari, it's likely that the Kul Tirans were taught Druidism from a different source than the Cenarion Circle. Once again I'd like to reiterate that, at this point of time, we simply don't know. Until more information comes out there's really no good reason for why Kul Tirans should have Druids, but it's not outside the realm of possibility. It's wholly possible that some Wild God, or Wild Gods, inhabit Kul Tiras and taught the people Druidic magics at one point.

Additionally, and something that I haven't seen anyone mention, the reasoning for Highmountain Tauren Druids is strenuous at best. Remember, only the Tauren of Thunder Bluff were taught by Malfurion and the Cenarion Circle. Additionally there wasn't a single Highmountain Tauren Druid NPC in all of Legion. However, unlike the Zandalari Trolls and Kul Tiran humans, one could argue that either A) the Highmountain Tauren were inducted into the Cenarion Circle at the behest of the Thunder Bluff Tauren and were therefore taught Druidic magics before all-out war broke out between the Horde and Alliance, or B) that the Thunder Bluff Tauren and Darkspear Trolls simply taught the Highmountain Tauren Druidism themselves outside of the Cenarion Circle.

I feel like it's an important thing to point out that with the burning of Teldrassil and the eviction of the Night Elves from Kalimdor the status of Moonglade and the Cenarion Circle is in question. Traditionally the Cenarion Circle acted across factional lines, but with the war breaking out in BfA who knows how it's going to go. Furthermore it's rumored and theorized that Malfurion might die when Teldrassil burns, and if that's the case it might lead to the fracturing and perhaps dissolution of the Cenarion Circle as a whole. I couldn't imagine Hamuul Runetotem staying friendly with the Horde if they slay his friend and mentor, but I suppose we'll see how it all pans out.

I'd like to wrap this up by saying that I really like Warcraft's Druids. There's so much lore surrounding the Druids, and it always feels like it's expanding. Because of the Druid's connection to things like the Emerald Dream there's so much more intrigue around Druids than any other class (in my opinion). Hopefully the point I've made has helped clear any questions. Thank you for reading.

Only personal loot for raids is likely in BfA

Posted: 15 Mar 2018 11:40 AM PDT

According to Ian in the current Q&A.

the idea being that the main reason not to use it is giving specific people set pieces which wont be there anymore.

one thing this would finally fix is split raids being basically mandatory once you try to go for higher ranks

Players have expressed a desire for more character customization for years. Why is this such a low priority for Blizzard?

Posted: 15 Mar 2018 12:45 PM PDT

Ion has revealed in the recent Deceloper Q&A that there are no plans on the horizon for non-allied race customization options. Along with this (from the MMO Champion transcription, at any rate) there was no mention of updates player models for Worgen and Goblins.

Why is it that the vocal desire of the playerbase to have more and better character customization options for playable characters falls on deaf ears time and time again?

I find it literally impossible to believe the art team couldn't have have been allocated ANY time since the addition of new models (or Worgen/goblins in 2010) to give us new/updates hair styles, skin tones, or—god forbid—tattoos/scars/etc. I'm not buying it that we'd have to sacrifice a raid tier for some customization options when you've had time to create a dozen ear and face combos for BfA NPC races but Worgen can only be 4 shades of brown, and male night elves shaving their chin means they can't have eyebrows.

Why can't this be made a priority? Models are aging rapidly, players WANT customization. These are the characters we see every day. This isn't something that should be thrown in the back burner, or left off the table entirely.

More customization, please.

Why Kul Tiran "Druids" shouldn't upset people

Posted: 15 Mar 2018 12:39 AM PDT

I've noticed a fair bit of people being upset over the Kul Tiran humans being able to be druids and I wanted to offer my thoughts.

First and foremost they are not Druids, but what they do is druidic, as in they pull their power from nature.

Here is an image I threw together of the different types of "Druid" that exist in the game.

Several different races draw their druidic powers from different places.

  • Night Elves and Tauren were directly given druidic powers by Cenarius
  • Gilnean "Harvest-witches" were humans who practiced nature magic and when they became afflicted by the worgen curse those powers grew considerably.
  • Troll Witch Doctors were taught druidism by loa spirits from the emerald dream

Information Taken from here

The Kul Tiran humans are probably more akin to the old ways of the harvest-witch similar to the Gilneans. Rather than being cursed however their powers could have eventually developed into being able to turn themselves into various wicker beasts.

So to Cenarius and the night elves these humans are not, and never will be true druids, but from a gameplay standpoint it's better to lump them all together and call it a druid.
