I was a Breath of the Wild hater, but now I love it

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 07:41 AM PST

February 20th of last year my dad died. I wasn't in a good place mentally. My husband and I wanted a switch but didn't preorder in time. At 10:30pm the night before the switch release I got a text from my cousin saying that Kmart is doing a midnight release, no preorder. It was only a week or 2 after the funeral, my husband was already asleep for the night. So I drove to Kmart and waited in line and got a switch and Breath of the Wild.

I've always been an extreme Zelda fan. When I was 9 I found Ocarina of Time at my grandmas house and decided to play. I didn't know what to do because I had started on my cousins save file. Looking back I remember they were right before the Gerudo level. So I just walked around, explored, had an adventure. I used the game as an escape from my life. I played it for hours and I didn't even do the story. When I wasn't playing the game I imagined I was a girl version of link. I had a pair of brown boots and white tights and would dress up in that and pretend I had a sword. I fell so hard for the series. My sister made fun of me and called me a Zelda nerd and said nobody liked Zelda games. My dad shut her down and said that it was actually one of the most popular video game series in the world.

That Christmas I found out about windwaker. I asked my dad for it and he got me my own copy. I started a new game and played a little bit of the story but mostly I spent hours on the islands just exploring, and sailing the huge ocean.

A few christmases later my dad got me Twilight Princess. The same thing happened with this game. A little story, mostly exploration and just escaping. It wasn't until high school that I went back and completed this games, all three of them. Then my dad got me Skyward Sword and I beat it in a week. In college, my husband and I each bought each other Majora's Mask for 3DS the day it came out and sat next to each other all weekend and played it. I beat that game too.

So you can imagine my excitement when the new game was coming out. I watched every second of footage they showed at E3. That night I got the switch I got home at 1am, and then got up at 6 when my husband was getting ready for work so we could turn it on together. We did, and I played. I didn't have any good feelings about it at first. It was my first open world game, the first game where weapons broke, etc. I was very much a Zelda-only kind of girl.

I played it for a week before I put it down. I hated it. It was too complicated. Too many things to think about. The combat was frustrating because I wasn't just mashing and then shielding. The music didn't feel right. No temples. It didn't feel like Zelda. I was angry because everyone was raving about it and me...I just couldn't get into it.

My husband played it on his own and I didn't really watch. About once a month he told me that I should try again. And I was very much not interested. One day it came up in conversation and I mentioned that the sound effects from the game take me back to the weeks after my dad's death, when I took time off school and just sat around being depressed and crying at the drop of the hat. My husband then said: "Is that why you didn't like Breath of the Wild?" And something just clicked in my brain. I picked up that game when I wasn't interested in ANYTHING let alone games. I didn't love anything at the time. So the next day, I turned on Breath of the Wild.

At first I got really frustrated, with the combat and the weapons breaking. But then I decided, let's just explore. Do some shrines. Fill the map. Don't worry about the story aspect yet. And wow, that did it. I can't put it down. I stayed up until 1am last night because I just couldn't stop. There's so much to do and see and so many side missions. The cinematography of the game is amazing. I'll be walking or riding on my horse and the moonlight will shine on the water and it'll just amaze me. I'm playing the game just how I first played ocarina. I feel like that 9 year old girl again just escaping into a Zelda game. Except this time there's so much more to see. This game would blow my 9 year old self's mind. I'm getting those feelings again. Those feelings of loving a Zelda game. And it's likely because my state of mind is better. Also, I'm getting way better at the combat just by practicing a little bit whenever I see an enemy. But anyways, I'm just really happy I decided to give the game another chance.

Game Style

# Answer %
1 Linear, story-driven, large focus on dungeons/bosses (Ocarina, Skyward, etc.) 52.7%
2 Nonlinear, adventure-driven, large focus on exploration/discovery (the NES original, BotW) 38.0%
3 Other 9.3%

Almost all of the "Other" answers were along the lines of "I like both" or "I like a good mix".

• No bias towards one or the other. Can appreciate when both are done well.

• I thought I preferred story-driven and linear until BotW. Now I don't know.

• Not necesseraly non-linear but a focus on exploration is important.

• It's like comparing apples to oranges for me. Majora's Mask is my favorite apple and BotW is my favorite orange.

• I like a little bit of both; story-driven quests in an open-ended, exploration based world.

• A BoTW Openness with a touch of giant dungeons

• Ideally the game is adventure driven but still features a lot of dungeons in the OOT style

• While I primarily enjoy nonlinear, adventure-driven, etc, type Zelda games, I belive that a good story is central to a genuine exprience and should never be overlooked.

• Honestly not sure, I like a mix of both, lots of nonlinear exploration but with a strong story.

• a good mix of the two! Give me huge dungeons with an engaging storyline in a BOTW style overworld.

Even though there were a lot of these comments, the majority (90.7%) still preferred one or the other.

Best Princess

# Game %
1 Breath of the Wild 33.1%
2 Skyward Sword 22.7%
3 Twilight Princess 19.0%
4 The Wind Waker 18.1%
5 Ocarina of Time 5.0%
6 Other 2.1%

"Other" answers:

• Spirit Tracks

• Hyrule Warriors

• Majora's Mask. >:-)

• Tetra!

• CDi :p

• Smash Bros Melee

Lefty Link

# Answer %
1 Not really, but it's a cool detail 55.9%
2 No, I don't even notice 26.5%
3 Yeah, it's one of the things that makes the series special 14.6%
4 Other 1.6%
5 Absolutely, every game where he's right-handed is trash (lol) 1.4%

Seems like most people don't really mind.

"Other" answers:

• Don't care

• Unless i'm Using motion controls, no

• It literally doesn't matter in the slightest.

• Doesnt matter

• Yes because i'm left handed and I enjoy seeing that

• I find it really nice as a left-hander myself

• Not REALLY, but I'm disappointed whenever he's not.

• dumb thing to care about tbh

• i don't care at all

• No, people take it waaaay too seriously

• Don't care

• Nope. I notice, but it doesn't mean anything to me.

• Left is weird

Dang these got spicy lol

Motion Controls

# Answer %
1 I don't mind them 36.1%
2 Don't like them, gyro for bow aiming in BotW is good though 32.6%
3 Don't like them at all 16.1%
4 They're great, I'd love to see Wiimote-style controls return 11.0%
5 Other 4.2%

About 12% favorable, 37% neutral, and 51% dislike (with the exception of bow gyro). Seems like a good idea to keep motion controls optional, if they are included at all.

"Other" answers:

• I hated Skyward Sword's clunky controls, but was absolutely fine with the simple "waggle-to-attack" style of Twilight Princess for the Wii.

• I fucking hate them. It's the only reason I haven't finished Skyward Sword; I enjoyed it, but swinging my arms like that hurts my arthritic shoulders after a while.

• They were good with Skyward Sword, though if they never made a return i wouldn't be bothered

• Alright, but some games do it better than others. I would prefer traditional controls

• I don't mind them as long as they aren't the only option. BotW did it best I think

• Aiming and such is fine, I don't mind motion control swordplay, the Device shrines can burn in hell.

• Have it as an option, but alongside traditional controller options.

• I'd like them if they were reserved for aiming shots and certain items, and not used for every little thing.

• I love them in the BotW, HDs style for bows, etc. I enjoy the SS style as well, but don't think it should be the standard.

Companions

# Answer %
1 Doesn't matter to me that much 40.8%
2 Yes, I just hope they're more like Midna/Tetra and less like Navi/Fi 32.6%
3 Absolutely, Zelda games feel incomplete without them 14.7%
4 No, Zelda games are at their best without companions 10.0%
5 Other 1.9%

About 48% favorable, 42% neutral, and 10% unfavorable. Seems like a good idea to bring them back in some fashion, however carefully.

"Other" answers:

• I agree with yes, but personally I love Fi haha,

• If they add gameplay or story value, are well-written, and are non-intrusive while you're journeying, I'm all for companion characters. It's just easier to create a bad one than a good one, so I tend to prefer not having a companion.

• Either way depending on the way they make the game. I do love some of the companions

• Companions should do more than before and act as pseudo-characters.

• Variety is key.

• I loved them in the linear games, but they might clash with the isolation feel of BotW's exploration, but I'd like to see them try it.

• I am open if they bring a new unique one to the series.

• FI DID NOTHING WRONG

Tunic

# Answer %
1 Classic green tunic 77.3%
2 New blue tunic 16.3%
3 Other 6.4%

@Nintendo #BringBackTheGreen

Lots of the "Other" answers were along the lines of "don't mind" or "lots of options are good like in BotW"

• Lobster Shirt

• I like my Link the way I like my coffee, no clothing at all.

• I love both, I like a good variety, for every new Zelda I hope both tunics are included as optional wear

• Depends. I definitely dislike white undergarments with the green tunic. Brown + green is great, but the blue is good too.

• Black

• It doesn't matter to me, but being able to change would be nice

• Wind waker pajamas

• I like both, the blue reminds me of Link's pyjamas in Wind Waker

• I like green better, but I dont mind them changing the design, got a little bit tired from the standart one with long cap. SS outfit and link's design overall is my favourite though.

• Not really attached either way. OG green hat is dumb tho

• Tunic? I'm in full armor!

• Shirtless

• Choice>determined color

• The games should not be afraid to deviate, but the green tunic should always appear at some point (like in BotW)

Thanks for reading! If you're interested in more surveys like this let me know. They are fun and I like doing them.

So this was a random thought I had this morning so please just bare with the fact I haven't played since the original N64 release.

Were Skull kid and Link merely pawns for the Fierce Deity and Majora to have their final battle?
