| SuPeRbOoMfAn has never placed worse than 5th at a Smash 64 tournament Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:41 PM PDT His only 5th place was at Kanto 2015, which was single elimination, best of 1, and character locked (he played Falcon). This means he has never placed worse than 4th in North America. His only 4th place was at Super Smash Con 2017 (the most stacked 64 tournament ever), so he never placed worse than 3rd at a North American tournament prior to 2017.
He has placed 1st or 2nd in every other tourney. SuPeRbOoMfAn is too damn good. [link] [comments] | ||
| Thank you Xanadu Games and the SSBM community Posted: 29 Mar 2018 12:48 PM PDT I had an unforgettable experience last night at Xanadu Games and I really thought I needed to share it. TL:DR will be at the bottom if you hate walls of text. I don't know if this applies to some of you here but I have never played a SSB game for real. Maybe a little smash 4 at a friends house for shits and giggles and brawl when I was a tiny tot, but nothing competitive. My real love for the games came from how much I loved to watch it. I'll tune into as many tourneys as possible, watch mango, hungrybox or zero on the regular. So a little while ago, like the rest of us, I found out that Xanadu was moving. Now all I knew was that they were a fun stream that played SSB but were moving to the Laurel park race track in my home state of MD. So I planned my hour long drive to visit on melee Wednesday. Systematically each of my friends said they were busy or didn't want to go. Determined and with a now cleared schedule Wednesday I left for XG....Alone. Now I've been to plenty of different events and venues alone like cs go LANs and MTG Grand Prixs/Opens. Not one of those has left me feeling like going to one of those events alone was a good idea. I arrived a little after 4 PM not knowing when the tournaments starts but knowing it goes till about 1 AM. I'm assuming the woman upfront was new or the best salesman ever because before I could explain to her I don't know anything about playing SSB I was signed up for melee singles and have a loan controller that I traded my ID for. For all that it cost me 20$ so it felt like a good deal. Apparently the tournament didn't start till 7:30 so there was exactly 3 other people at the venue practicing doing friendlies. This is where the most pivotal event of the night happened. Instead of being the shy guy in a corner not knowing what I'm doing I worked up the courage and walked over there and just sat down asking if I could watch. This confused them. They were doing friendlies, I had a controller in my hand and there was a port open, why was I asking to watch? They asked if I signed up for anything and I told them I did but I've never played before. This apparently is the weirdest thing they've ever heard. So at this point more people are arriving and 1 of them says me and and him should move to another station so he could teach me the game. We literally haven't even exchanged names and this man sat down for a straight hour teaching me what the basic were, what wave dashing was, lag cancelling, what a DI was and also just being a great understanding person. His name was Chinchilla but after that hour he had to pick up a friend but I'll see him again later. After that training session I had another couple of people named The Brig and 20% come over start teaching me some stuff like how to properly use my air moves and convincing me not to play Ganon(might go back idk) and instead I started training on Marth. They literally played against me for an hour or more until they finally went to do there own thing and I trained my Marth vs a Luigi named Cuthulu. This is the first time I experienced such a welcoming group of STRANGERS. To take hours from there practice time just to help me learn a game was amazing. So after some time the tournament finally started and with my new found knowledge and inability to wave dash and short hop consistently I was going to F smash my way to victory. Also if you are a Marth main I apologize for literally everything. My first match I got 4 stocked then 3 stocked by emoDinosaur's Falco, hopefully he gets nerfed in the next balance patch. And then I actually almost took a game from 20% but walking up and F smashing into a shielded fox leads to sadness. All in all I had a blast without winning a single game. At this point it was 9 and I was worn out but Chinchilla and his friend Quote convinced me to stay for some food and maybe friendlies. Us 3 played till about midnight and I had to leave for an hour drive home. The whole drive home I couldn't stop thinking about how awesome everyone was. So I knew I had to share my story here. A shoutout and thank you to Chinchilla, The Brig, Quote, 20% and Cthulhu! You guys are the best and now have me wanting to be there every Wednesday. Also thank you to Xanadu Games for hosting such a smooth event and congrats to Jerry for being very good at this hard ass video game. TL:DR I was warmly welcomed by a bunch of strangers at XG and taught for hours how to play a game just because people are nice. Sorry if formatted weird cause I typed this on my phone [link] [comments] | ||

| Cloud Doubles Analysis - Article Info & Release Date Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:48 AM PDT So, after the 3 primary TOs made the decision to not invoke rule changes for the PGRv5 session, a lot of regions and some major events have made the decision to ban Cloud in doubles (or ban double Cloud.) This has sparked some debate. I have decided to make an article on the subject that will attempt to best analyze Cloud's prominence in the double's format, primarily citing national data. This will include, as best I can find (based on Twinge) viewership numbers assuming they are available to look at any decline experienced during doubles. This aspect will likely be not 100% complete because some numbers may be lost, but I will do my best to get a proper range from 2016-2018. This will not be as lengthy as the Bayonetta article as the debate surrounding Cloud is less heated, less contentious, and requires much less player research (a major facet of the February article.) One aspect that may make the project lengthy is the fact that I do not currently host any scoring for Doubles as I am personally disinterested in the format, meaning I will have to score from scratch using the same method I use currently to score characters in singles. Subjects that will get a look-over -Cloud turnover rates (e.g. Nairo, MVD, etc.) -Cloud's scoring by comparison to other characters -Various statistics on Cloud's prominence -Trend line that dates his prominence if enough data is available -# of times Cloud teams/teams with Cloud have placed in certain positions. Top 1, Top 3, Top 8, etc. -Viewership numbers for doubles. -Probably other subjects, such as match-up stats where applicable. Add suggestions for things you want to see. Certain things may be too difficult to collect or may warrant separate articles (e.g. PR info for top tiers is something in the pipeline that I wanted in the Bayo article.) Release Date: April 9th, 2018InTheLoop - https://intheloop837.wordpress.com/ My Twitter - https://twitter.com/LoopBarnard I will also post it on Reddit & Smashboards' CCI thread. Notes for scheduleI had released a schedule about a week before the Smash 5 teaser dropped. All the projects I had listed are still in the pipeline, however, Smash 5 has changed how I plan to do things, and certain projects have expanded. The Sheik Kill % project by necessity has become one examining 10-15 top characters and will require multiple months of work. I will (try) to release the Jr. article on April 2nd. It's not very big and most of the work was a PR database look-over. [link] [comments] | ||
| I'm okay with cutting characters for Smash 5. Posted: 29 Mar 2018 11:19 AM PDT Smash is unique, fun, and surprisingly deep, but the fact that there isn't a larger focus on making every character viable really holds it back. I know doing this takes a lot of time and effort, and if that means we get a lesser total number of characters because of it, I'm okay with that. On a similar, Smash's roster is representative of both the history of the gaming industry and current Nintendo. Yet, there are characters that represent neither of those things which continue to be in the newer versions of the games. Why? Smash's roster should change as Nintendo changes. For example, classic characters, such as Pac-Man, Mario, Pikachu, Megaman, etc, will always have a place in Smash because they are representative of video game history. Likewise, the original 12 I think will always have a spot. Meanwhile, the Inklings are the best example of a character that represents what Nintendo's currently doing. After all, they're the first big new IP in a long time, so they should 100% be in Smash 5. But what about characters that were representative at the time, but don't mean much anymore? Pit, Palutena, Wii Fit Trainer, Robin, and Shulk immediately come to mind. Sure, they made sense for the Wii U version, but that's only because their respective games were coming out around the same time or just before the Sm4sh. But why should they be in Smash 5? Their games are not representative of current Nintendo and have not yet stood the test of time to see if they'll become classics. Finally, there's no reason why classic characters can't get modern changes to better fit what Nintendo's currently doing in their franchises. Mario getting FLUDD was a good example of this, but sunshine's aged quite a bit, so why not change it out for Cappy, now? Why not give Luigi the vacuum now that he officially has his own series? Why is Ganondorf still punching things? Anyway, just something I was thinking about. I'd like to hear what others think. TL;DR: Making all characters viable is more important than a larger total number. Get rid of characters that aren't classics or relevant to current Nintendo and update older characters to reflect more recent games. [link] [comments] | ||
| Brockhampton (boy band) are Smashers!! And play Melee!!! Posted: 29 Mar 2018 09:02 AM PDT https://youtu.be/yHQngS8yMMw?t=37 I'm a music producer building a squad, we have a bunch of diverse talented people, and we always talk about trying to grow into this crazy big diverse group. A friend of mine introduced me to Brockhampton a couple weeks ago, and I am so inspired, their music is amazing, so diverse, and smooth. I want to achieve something similar within the next couple of years. Also the fact that I've been a smasher since 2015, and they also play Melee makes me love them even more. There is low-key my dream. Live in a house making music, plus having a bunch if my homies to work/play Smash with :D Hopefully they will keep at it and we may see one of them in tournament some day!! EDIT: just linking my music :) https://youtu.be/TfH_SjYrnJc [link] [comments] | ||

| Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:22 PM PDT My friends and I play Project M, and I was never into Melee. It just felt too foreign and unresponsive. Yesterday, my friends and I were playing PM and realized how good we've gotten over the past 2 years. We thought it could be fun to try out some Melee. I fell in love immediately. Understanding wavedashing, ledgedashing, L-cancelling, and all of those techs has made the game make sense now and I think I might make the switch. I know skill in one game doesn't necessarily translate, but I was able to 2 stock my friend that regularly competes in Melee tournaments and this is my second time playing Melee. I'm glad to have another community to join and finally be able to take advantage of the fact that I go to UCI. [link] [comments] | ||

| Why is bayonetta's triple/quad jump a thing? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 02:32 PM PDT I've been going over recent Bayonetta footage (Mostly smash master tbh) and apart from people still DI-ing/SDIing every bayo combo wrong a couple instances caught my attention. One of those moments was Bayonetta doing, what I've called, the quad jump. It is where Bayonetta uses DJ before doing WT 1, but then used DJ again during WT 2 to combo off it. And still have DJ to follow up??!! Bayonetta essentially gets to become puff for a few moments and just finds 2 random DJ's elsewhere to use in her combos. Imagine if every time ZSS laddered you she could do DJ up b after doing the DJ uair, or she could just DJ uair you again?? That wouldn't be okay. Her kill range would be absurd. Now this is already annoying enough but it seems that DJing into the WT also allows you to follow up better on DI up. It also puts you slightly closer to the blast zone at %s where uair to DJ uair might just kill you. I honestly think this and witch time/bat within(much less so) are honestly what make her completely busted.... well that and every move (besides smash attacks(duh), jab, ftilt, dair, and dABK(RIP pre-patch)) is a combo tool. But at least without triple/quad jump alot of her early off the top KO's just don't happen anymore. And her recovery is much more reasonable. Honestly just imagine a world where WT2 consumed her DJ? Examples of quad jump Tweek Mistake EDIT: I'm just thinking what if WT 2 always ate the DJ. Regardless of you actually using it. That would be cool... I think. [link] [comments] | ||
| Has anyone found a use for crouch cancelling in this game? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 03:34 PM PDT I mean, it's still present in sm4sh, but I never hear anyone talk about it. It still reduces knockback but its pretty much useless because you will get knocked off the ground even if you're at 0. You can't crouch cancel getup attacks to punish them either, so you might as well shieldgrab them instead. However, thats the thing, if you're in a state where you're able to crouch then you might as well spotdodge or shield because with those you wont get hit up off the ground or take damage. I can't think of a situation in sm4sh where this mechanic is useful. [link] [comments] | ||
| If we get a new subspace, what do you guys think would be a good plot? Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:48 AM PDT Plotting with 60-70 characters is gonna be hard as hell. I doubt we're even gonna get an adventure mode because of that and the 2 year development time but dear god I hope so. The only thing I can think for a plot is master core but that's basically it. | I’m a filthy Melee casual and this might be a dumb question but Posted: 29 Mar 2018 03:56 PM PDT Is wavedashing typically done by using tap jump (jump with the control stick) or button jump? I'm trying really hard to get the hang of it in Project M and I can't figure out the best way. [link] [comments] | ||
