Posted: 15 Mar 2018 09:03 AM PDT Well, I'm discovering one small problem with my sea ice adventure. I found the coldest location possible on the map, and this scenario has permanent volcanic winter and a permanent cold snap. I think the temperature got to -39C once, and that was ages ago. It often gets below -100C. That means that raids are a problem for the AI. I did initially try sending a couple of single tribal raiders. They died, but one did leave behind a rather nice winter cloak. Eventually it advanced the difficulty a bit and send a 4 man tribal team all with melee weapons, but then it had them "prepare". So the 4 raiders stood around for hours in the middle of a -111C blizzard. Two had gear that could handle the temperature, but 2 could only take to about -55C. When they finally started to charge the two with the inadequate gear both collapsed from the cold ending the raid without a shot being fired. But Cassandra wants to send raids so she tries a single scyther mechanoid. This occurred right after I had purchased some wood and assembled a butcher's table outdoors (to replace the butchers spot I was using.) The scyther started bashing my brand new butcher's table as I shot at him from the doorway to my cabin. I would win after taking a single charge lance to the chest, but the workbench was reduced to rubble. I healed up and went back to my usual research while waiting for the crops to grow. Then another mechanoid arrives. This one heads for the power farm and one of the solar arrays. This time it never manages to get a hit in and it dies. Of course, I don't have a machining workbench for the disassembly, so I have 2 mechanoid corpses in my stockpile. I did get one scyther blade, but haven't seen a pirate merchant since I obtained it. It's not an exciting life when it comes to raids. My other "combat situations" have been 2 different times polar bears wandered by and went after Xanadu, the colony snowhare. JenJen just shot them down both times. I've also had some Beast of Caerbannog events, but those I just lock the door and wait as the vorpal rabbits can't take the cold. There have been 2 more serious animal issues. I did get a spirit wolf wandering by. This one had a major problem with cancer of the jaw, so it had almost no manipulation. I had JenJen go out to shoot it, and was quickly reminded of how tough these things are. The first time it chased her back inside the cabin. It managed one slash on her hand, nearly severing her right thumb and ring finger (both were at 1/7 health after the hit.) JenJen healed up and then went back out to finish off the wolf. With a lot of moving in and out of the doorway she finally brought it down. And my current "struggle" is just to wait out a megaferret manhunter pack. They can take to -95C so they won't die from the cold. It was 6, but one has already wandered away from boredom. The other 5 hover, but I brought food inside and there was a harvest after I locked the door, so I have plenty of food to hold out until the ferrets leave. [link] [comments] |
No sunlamp requiered: GreenHouse 1/4 unroofed Posted: 15 Mar 2018 04:39 PM PDT There's a game mechanic allowing rooms with a few tiles unroofed to be still considered indoors. Unlike a single hole in a wall, you can unroof up to 1/4 of the whole area before the room is considered outdoors. It means that the temperature will be calculated just as if the full roof was built. Example : a 10x10 room (the inside is 8x8 = 64 tiles available) will be considered indoors with 15 unroofed tiles, but outdoors at 16. You can grow stuff on these 15 tiles, all year and very safely. No hydroponics of course because of the rain, but just regular soil works just fine. Fertile is just a bonus. This allows the design for solarlamp-less greenhouse, because your crops will benefit from natural sunlight and also from all the benefits from being indoors : Temperature, safety, all-year growth. Of course, sunlamps are better in mid game. But this idea could be useful early game, when powerlamps are expensive to sustain. And I was always frustrated from not having a glass ceiling available in the game : I like the 1/4 unroofed greenhouse. It feels like a glass ceiling. [link] [comments] |

Is world map traveling still excruciatingly frustrating? Posted: 15 Mar 2018 11:03 PM PDT When I played Rimworld last: 1) For some reason they would in most cases go around "preparing to launch caravan" or something indefinitely. When trying to walk on the world map they would just idle around never actually going. 2) Apparently "foraging" is an alien concept to people in Rimworld. Even the one time I would get people to travel the world they would need absolutely INSANE amounts of food. The two factors above made it so excruciatingly frustrating to world travel. To the point that after many attempts I never tried it again because it completely ruined my fun. Just wondering if these issues and world traveling has been balanced out / changed since last I played or if world traveling is still such a pain in the ass that it's not worth bothering with. Note: I'm very negative here but I do love the game, but this aspect of it is so anti-fun and illogical (really, caravans can't eat off the land while traveling?) that it left a really bad impression on me. Baby animals do the same amount of melee damage as adult animals? Posted: 15 Mar 2018 01:20 PM PDT And have a much, much smaller body size? Body size is a multiplier for ranged hit chance right? Does this mean baby animals are more effective in combat than adult animals? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Mar 2018 06:44 PM PDT I have the Rim of Madness - Vampires mod and my vampire just stands in one spot and never does anything. He used to do things and now he wont stop just standing there. If you force him to do something it queues but he continues to stand until he passes out. [link] [comments] |

What’s a good weapon to shooting skill guide? Posted: 15 Mar 2018 10:21 PM PDT Say I have a colonist who is level 10, one is 4, and the other is 6. What guns should they have? I imagine the 10 should have a rifle, sniper if possible. What about 6? Just an assault rifle? And 4? Are they good enough for rifles? Maybe just a shotgun or an LMG on suppress mode? (If I'm running CE of course.) What about anyone lower? Should they even have guns? [link] [comments] |
A new players first kidnapping... Posted: 15 Mar 2018 10:47 AM PDT Hey guys... Like i said, i'm still new, but i thought this was very cool. last night i got word that an escaped prisoner was looking for refuge, so i agreed to take him in. He had good stats (14 Intellectual) so i was quite happy to have him. Of course he is chased by some pirates, so i set out to defend. One of my colonists gets downed, and i was shocked to see a pirate carrying her away. In reading here, i guess this is a typical thing, but i had never seen it before. I tried to save her, but they carried her off the map. I HATE re-loading, but i was so unprepared for this and i really didnt want to lose my colonist, so i reloaded in shame. I feel like i cheated a bit :( Anyway, if i had kept playing, would there have been any way to get my colonist back? [link] [comments] |
