What's the proper playstyle for a Bounty Hunter?

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 03:28 PM PDT

When to pick, why pick, and how to execute the playstyle properly? I've tried this hero but I suppose I don't get how he is supposed to function, thanks in advance.

Just can't find a carry I like (plus SK hero pool question - Guardian MMR)

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 04:14 PM PDT

On the advice of some people in this sub, I drastically narrowed down my hero pool a few months ago and it has been working fairly well:

Pos 4/5 - CM

Pos 4 (roam) - SB

Pos 3 - Brew/Axe

Pos 2 - Brew+

Pos1 - ???

I usually play offlane or roam, doing the others only when the team composition calls for it. I still need a fallback hero for those occasional games when we need a pos1, basically an any-time safe pick that is not going to lose you the game. But usually, I try a carry for a few games and then figure out something about him/her just does not click. So far I have tried:

Sven/DK/WK (decent damage, poor mobility gives me problems); Luna/Drow/AM/Lycan/CK/Spectre (all seem too situational for every game); Gyro (low starting damage makes for bad starts in 2v2 aggro vs aggro lanes); Jugg (just suck at the hero) ... I refuse to play Sniper, PA or Bloodseeker because I am SO sick of seeing them.

Seems like my options are ... just stick with WK or DK and try to play well enough not to lose? Use Brewmaster as a carry? Or, since I've had some success with Void offlane in the past, get more familiar with him and use him for either of pos 1/3? (I have been thinking about taking a break from Axe anyway except situationally vs summons/illusions, for example, so this would fit.) Or something else, Medusa or something?

Also, I am not particularly great at CM, just pick her because of her win% at this bracket when we need a support. Wondering if I'd be better served dumping both her and SB for Sand King, who could fill all three roles of support, roaming and offlane. So it would be:

Pos 4/5 (and roam) - SK

Pos 3 - Brew, SK, Void

Pos2 - Brew+

Pos1 - Void, Brew

  • (I played a lot of TA in the past and can manage with Zeus, so although I don't consider them part of my regular hero rotation, mid is not really the issue for me)

As always, feel free to ask any questions in my chat and I'll answer as soon as I can.

This will probably be the last time I post about my stream on /r/learndota2 so this doesn't seem like spam. So stop by if you are interested in learning more about the many intracacies of DotA, or just want to watch a fun DotA stream.

What became of the weekly Today I learned threads?

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 09:14 AM PDT

I used to learn quite a bit on those TIL threads that used to pop up on every Sunday but I haven't seen them around for quite some time now ie a couple of months. What made them stop and is there ever a chance of them returning and if not, someone else should start an alternative as it used to be quite fun and insightful at the same time.

New Player Here

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 08:09 PM PDT

Hey all. Just thoguht I'd make a quick post. I'm a new player here, I started playing league of legends about 7 months ago. Wanted to try a new MOBA out because I really love the genre so far. I've only played one full game of Dota, and let me tell you, it was a living hell compared to my first real game of League. At least everyone else was god awful along with me in LoL. This game places me with players that know at least somewhat of what they are doing. If I play more, I feel like I'll just ruin a bunch of player's games. What should I do? Is there a way to improve other than playing bot matches (they don't seem to be particularly helpful in this regard)? Is there a place where I can find guides for heroes and how to play.

Dealing with harass as a carry in during laning phase

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 07:34 PM PDT

I find often times as a melee carry I get harassed a lot by the enemy supports or offlaners during the laning phase, especially early on. If I'm lucky my laning partner will harass them back to buy me some room to get last hits but aside from just buying more regen items, what else should I be doing? Aggroing and just try get as many last hits as I can? Or buying more early game defensive / passive regen items?

Doin some replay analysis on strim

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 05:13 AM PDT

https://www.twitch.tv/freecookiess

streaming right now, won't play any doterz just analyse viewer games

so come in and just put your match id, what hero you were playing and what do you want me to look at.

prepare a question, don't be lazy and just ask ''what did i do wrong this game''

ask like ''hey could you look at my laning phase, how could have i not died there'' or something

p.s my ISP is being a little cuck today, if the stream drops just wait 2-5 min i'll go back up

edit: aite, stream over,

vods are here: https://www.twitch.tv/freecookiess/videos/all

first vod today even included a quick 900 lh in 30 min.

will stream again tomorrow so if you want me to analyse any specific games put the matchid's here and the question and i'll go over them 1 by 1, so even if you don't catch the stream the vods will be up.

Estimating actual MMR at 50% win rate?

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 10:02 AM PDT

Hi there,

I started my calibration games about 4 months ago and picked them back up earlier this month. I ended up calibrating at Crusader 4, and after 5 or so games, I'm at Crusader 5. According to my stats page, this equates to an MMR of 1916.

(I suspect this is from the previous ranked season. I have only recently started playing ranked because it made me too anxious before.)

Anyway, my overall win rate has always been pretty high. I suspect I'm not quite calibrated correctly yet, since I'm at about 57%. If I have a 57% win rate at Crusader 4/5, is there any way to guesstimate my "actual MMR" if I had a win rate of 50%?

Also, I'm totally open to a general analysis of my recent matches if anyone wants to offer.

Since the changes to jungle creeps and removing of iron talon, is there any way to jungle with heroes like lycan without going back into lane?

Position 1 advice- am I farming too much?

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 09:25 AM PDT

Looking for advice about my pos 1 play. I usually play in a party unranked with friends so I'm not really sure if my rank is accurate but it's guardian 2. I know some areas I need to work in (drafting, cs/lane control, itemization) but I'm looking for general advice about huge things I did wrong or if there are any big areas I need to work in. One piece of feedback I get from my teammates a lot is that I'm farming too much instead of fighting/ganking so I'm specifically wondering about that. Positive feedback is also welcomed ;) Here's one where I lost and one where i won:

Any tips on improving for >1000 MMR?

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 06:16 AM PDT

So I'm relatively new to Dota and just started playing in early January, and I feel my win-rate (44%) could be much better if I knew what components my teams are missing, and what I can do to give an advantage. I usually enjoy playing ganking roles and have had some success playing a pos 3 bounty or slark but I still feel I'm missing some component in the game that's leading me to lose. I try to actively communicate with my teammates and fill any role we need. Some of my biggest questions I have:

  • Should I be first picking no matter who I'm playing?

  • Is a good pusher more important than a good carry?

  • Are there "meta team lineups" I should be trying to setup?

I'm currently on mobile so sorry if formatting is screwed but any tips would be really appreciated!

Is it okay to rush Battle Fury if I am bad at csing?

Posted: 25 Mar 2018 11:40 PM PDT

New player here, played 200h some years ago, now I came back and I've played around 30.

I am really bad at CSing, and today I played Phantom Assassin. I already had good items and I had a good game overall, but when I builded Battle Fury everything changed, I didn't lose a single creep and I could farm all the jungle in less than a minute.

It gave me tons of gold and I tought about building it as my first item (on heroes that can benefit from it, I'm not going to build that as Sniper.) so I can buy other items faster.

Is that a good idea, or would that be a bad build?

Itemisation

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 02:42 PM PDT

Are there any guides on itemisation? Specifically the first couple of "build up items" to by on cores. I struggle to understand when to buy drums, SnY, echo sabre, Vlad's etc etc.

Also people talk about an item being "good stats for cost" but what is a baseline for this?

Any help is appreciated!

Regarding analysis of my carry luna game,I would also be curious to know if my camera positioning was decent or horrendous.

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 09:54 AM PDT

So I just posted yesterday regarding the fact that I changed controls and I am getting used to them, Improving on my mechanics gradually. I played a carry luna game today & if someone has free time to analyse my replay, I would be grateful. I know my early game eclipses were horrible but that's just because I'm getting used to the hotkeys, Up for any constructive criticism.

Glimpse dodging

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 01:39 PM PDT

What should i know about trying to dodge glimpse? Should I move my camera to particles or should I just rely on timing? What if the particles are in such a position I can't see them and my hero?

I understand poly arena exist and I think I'm aware of all the abilities you can use to dodge it.

Thank you.

Brewmaster questions

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 01:09 PM PDT

I'm spamming offlane Brewmaster and here are my random questions.

1) I usually spend all my gold at the start on regen and a Stout Shield, then buy a Quelling Blade, Stick and boots. Then these are the average timings of my most common items: Phase 12 minutes, Aquila 16 minutes, Vlads 19 minutes, Blink 23 minutes, AC 33 minutes. What timings would be "ideal" if I'm playing against people with similar MMR and it's always dual offlane? Would I be better off if I mixed up the order of my items? How? I'm sometimes skipping Phase and Vlads, only buying brown boots and Morbid Mask and then going for Blink.

2)Lets say I have all these items and the game still isn't decided. What is my next big item? I'm normally going for Radiance or Shiva's. Radiance feels underwhelming that late against heroes but it helps in pushing waves alone. Shiva's is the opposite.

3) If the other team is heavy on magic damage and light on right clickers what should I get: cloak/hood/pipe and/or the magic resistance talent?
