new player experience needs a revamp Posted: 15 Mar 2018 04:14 AM PDT The drama over the marketing video stuff got me and a friend talking about the actual new player experience in gw2 and I thought I'd share some of what we were talking about. My post formatting is kind of weird but I tried to bold the different topic categories :P This game basically has two different 'new player experiences' and they probably wildly affect a new player's perceptions of the game. 1) If you "just try the game out" by buying one of the expansions and start off that way then you get a lvl 80 boost. If you use the boost and start at 80 then you get a certain set of instructions about where to go next/what to do (here are the high level areas, here is where you start your expansion story adventure, etc.) 2) If you're just "trying the game out" with the free version, you're starting at lvl 1 and getting totally different instructions about what to do/where to go. This becomes a problem when you start receiving in-game mails telling you that you're eligible for Ascalonian Catacombs (and subsequent dungeons) which is content that no one really does anymore....and certainly not at pre80 levels. In a pretend scenario, it's kind of shitty to have to explain to a friend "oh, yeah I dunno why they still send you those mails about dungeons because they don't support that content anymore and it's really outdated and buggy". That's a pretty deflating thing to have to say to someone that's potentially excited about the game and excited about the word 'dungeon' which is a supported thing in every other MMO. This is just one example, though. The gear/perks you get from leveling up are outdated, leveling takes too long, the original maps are relatively empty compared to 80 maps, etc. GW2 does not have any kind of refer-a-friend system or trial system. Why can't a veteran account (I'm not sure how you would want to determine this status in lieu subscription fee months) give a 7 day trial pass to HoT/PoF to friends? Why can't I refer friends/family and we both get teleports to each other, a special booster to use together, etc. Every other MMO has things like this, why doesn't GW2? What is the point of the mentor tag? Since HoT most of the time I have seen the mentor tag used is for silly SW farming maps where everyone pops the tag. Sometimes I will see on meta maps "yeah I can tag for X lane but I only have a mentor tag if someone else with a real tag wants to tag instead" and similar comments. Does anyone actually use the tag for 'mentoring'? GW2 is a game in which you can make a lot of bad decisions and set yourself up with a build (gear/traits) that make the game very hard for you. The level 80 boosts sort of deal with this, but they still give you Soldier's stats which aren't exactly great for farming and the game doesn't do anything to explain what kind of stats you should be trying to get. The differences between certain weapons is also not clearly explained to a new person. For example, Necro Axe and Scepter...Power/Condi but a new player isn't going to necessarily realize this and will probably just use whatever they think looks cool. Which is fine...but frustration about being able to kill/not kill stuff is a real issue for new players. You're going to have a tough time if you're using a bunch of stupid stats that make it difficult for you to kill things...especially if you're using weapons that don't really do a lot of damage in open world PVE. Necro Staff and Mesmer GS are two that come to mind. I see them both all the time and I wonder if the person playing ever gets frustrated at how slow they kill things. If you're a free player trying out the game then you're also probably going to just use whatever you get as a drop whereas the people who use a lvl80 boost are at least given a set of weapons with sort of appropriate stats. This is just some of what my friend and I were discussing. I feel like getting (and keeping) actual new players to the game would be helped by addressing some of these issues. And I don't mean crazy game overhauls. Obviously resources aren't going to be dumped into dungeons, but the in-game mail notifications about them should probably be removed since they're just a source of frustration for new players. Some of the smaller stuff should be updated/changed. Give players berseker/viper gear while leveling up, have in-game explanations of weapons and stats, put resources into a refer-a-friend program instead of weird PR videos. TLDR: I'm not saying that core content needs updated. I'm saying that the systems involved in the new player experience need to be updated. The messages/instructions that you receive need to be updated to actually help new players rather than pointing them towards old/unsupported stuff (dungeons) and pushing them towards making bad decisions (carrion stats gear, etc.). They should also add a referral program. [link] [comments]
Small Request: Add Lion's Arch Aerodrome to the Quick Travel Menu in Havoc's Airship/Similar Areas. Posted: 15 Mar 2018 10:04 AM PDT Title says it all. Would just be a nice feature, and reduce the loading screens. I'm constantly going to be putting characters in this area for it's convenience, and would like the feature as I also like to swap characters for raids. Edit: All of these passes are/were sold at 1000 gems. Seeing how they are equal in value, why are they not equal in functionality? IMO, they should all work the same way; they are still very unique in the environment they offer, but it should be left at that. [link] [comments]

Posted: 15 Mar 2018 07:45 PM PDT I've checked the forums and I can't find the proper strategy for this guy now, since he was 'fixed'. Am I correct that his blue water/ice fields give him regen? Just want clarification, thanks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Mar 2018 03:22 AM PDT This may have been in discussion in the past, but is it actually possible to get rid of those horrible character outlines? Most of the time i would love to turn on postprocessing , but those outlines destroy all the Immersion the pp creates (not to mention all the screenshots, you wanna take). Did a developer at any time comment on why these outlines have to be bound to postprocessing? I actually heard about Reshade, but does it also apply different pp-effects on different maps, like Drytop and Draconis Mons? [link] [comments]
LS2 story mission bugged, unable to complete Posted: 15 Mar 2018 02:40 PM PDT I'm on "Summit Invitations" and I currently have to "disrupt the sons of Svanir" with Fenris. Cannot complete as we are stuck here with the dolyaks frozen in place and nothing will trigger them to move. It's been hours for me. What can we do? [link] [comments]
Is this game open world? I want to start playing Posted: 15 Mar 2018 01:26 PM PDT I want to start playing but I dont want to waste my hours downloading a game just to find out its not to my tastes (this game is very big for someone with a not so overly good internet speed). BTW yes I looked it up on google but the results are mixed and not accurate. Google confuses GW2 with the first GW it seems? [link] [comments]
Looking to step into GW2 coming from WoW Posted: 15 Mar 2018 03:39 AM PDT Any youtube recommendations I can watch to just get the feel of the game? A lot of popular youtube videos regarding GW2 are months or even years old. Thanks! EDIT: a big thank you to all you guys for the input! [link] [comments]
Fractals 1 -> 100 Marathon Event! Again! Posted: 14 Mar 2018 09:45 PM PDT Hello again /r/Guildwars2! 10 months ago a guildmate and I completed a Fractals 1 to 100 Marathon. It was a grueling 16 hours, but we had fun and made friends. We even got to play with /u/Anet_Ben! This Saturday at 8:30 AM PDT, we'll be doing it again! I'll be streaming a "Do you have a druid you can swap to?" Soulbeast POV here: https://www.twitch.tv/theguaka My guildmate Vacuuna will be streaming a "Are you sure you have enough AR for this place?" Warrior POV here: https://www.twitch.tv/vacuuna It won't be exactly the same as last time...
We still hope to finish in under 24 hours, but expect it to take longer than last time. Also - same as before - only the two of us have committed to do the full marathon so our party may have open slots. We want to crush these Fractals quickly, so if we need people, we're looking for Good(TM), experienced, well-equipped T4 Fractal frequenters to join us on the journey. Feel free to join for as long as you want, no obligation to stay until the end. Wish us luck!

Questions about the SPellbreaker in PVE Posted: 15 Mar 2018 06:42 PM PDT So I just came back to the game and as a Warrior player I'm really interesteed in the new Spellbreaker and I have a few questions for you guys since i didn't find any answers in the guides I read: When do you play Spellbreaker over Condition Berserker as a Bannerslave? Or do you only play it as a DPS class? Do I use Dagger/Axe + GS or Axe/Axe + GS? Or even another combination? I proably take the Bubble as Elitespell right? How do I know it's time to remove boons? Do I just cast Dagger F1 or the Elite when I see buffs on the enemy or do I exactly have to know at what time the boss will get buffs? Is it only good against Dhuum in W5 for raids or can I play it against all bosses? I thank you guys in advance and hope you are having a great weekend! [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Mar 2018 01:50 AM PDT After recent marketing fiasco of "questionable social behavior by people who do not play GW2 anymore" I was bugged with the question: What actually can promote game by showcasing its community? Well the answer pretty obvious. We have several really valuable assets in the community. Why not to showcase them? We have several great content creators, we have tons of community guilds that work every day with PUGs on events, raids and metas, we have WvW PUG commanders that can achieve miracles with 80 man zerg. WoodenPotatoes is the prime example of community showcase. Smug person, that not only veteran GW player but one of the best content creators for MMO that I ever seen. Take an interview of Potato. Showcase his content. Heck you don't even need to force him show his face. People on the internet would love WP mystery ("I do not show my face, My pride is irrelevant, I am the voice of community" voiced by WP would be awesome) New people would go to his channel, they would see healthy community with great backing content. This is the best community showcase that can be. We need to showcase that GW2 IS STRONK!!!111 and not freaking dating site. [link] [comments]
Presence of the Three Orders after “Core” Posted: 15 Mar 2018 03:34 AM PDT How you feel about them? I know we always get Priory characters as lore historian characters but that's about it. I like their presence in the most part but I do find that the Order of Whispers non existent which makes me sad. [link] [comments]

How do I check my client version (32-bit or 64-bit) on a Mac? Posted: 15 Mar 2018 07:07 PM PDT I tried searching the forums, and this question was asked concerning PCs, but I couldn't find a Mac response. My game is super bugged right now. I can't leave the current map that my characters load to or the game crashes. For example, one character is in Desert Highlands, and any attempt to WP to another map or go through the portal to Crystal Oasis causes a crash. Tech support has been working with me, but a couple weeks on now and we have nothing. Most recently they asked to make sure I was using 64-bit client, but I don't know how to verify that on a Mac. Anybody know how to check that, and additionally, have any tips on similar issues in game? Thanks for the help guys! [link] [comments] |
