Playing as a female protagonist in Far Cry 5 feels completely out of place (very slight spoilers in text).

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:45 PM PDT

Before I start out, let me make it clear that this post is primarily about tonal dissonance and quality of writing of Far Cry 5 specifically. This is mostly an observation I found incredibly pervasive and striking in my time with Far Cry 5, namely that the game offers the choice between playing a male or female protagonist but the writing – in so many ways – is quite obviously written for a male character. Making the choice to play as female leaves you with the intense feeling that the game was not created for this perspective, much more than in any other game I've played.

Despite being male, I usually prefer to play female characters when given the choice. For many reasons, among those being that tt's usually the road less taken which makes my playthrough always feel a bit more "special." So, having bought Far Cry 5 without knowing too much about it, I was quite surprised that you were given a choice between a male and female character in the first place – Far Cry 3 and 4 were distincly "male" games which both catered to and criticised the typical male power fantasies. Far Cry 5, it turns out, is no different. But that's not the main reason I regret playing as a female character. In my entire gaming career, Far Cry 5 is by far the worst game I've seen when it comes to even recognising your choice.

In lieu of a name, other characters (both male and female) call you "man," "bro," "son of a bitch," "dude" etc. In one scene, one character starts with the awkward statement apropos of nothing that he "doesn't want to assume genders" or anything but that he calls all people "dude or "man" – which would be a somewhat okay copout if he wouldn't also call you "amigo" and other female companion "girl" without blinking twice. The same person also talks about how he wants to throw a party with you and invite (paraphrasing) "tons of hot chicks." Female characters swoon over your heroics and male characters reference how they're not half the person you are. And I'm not playing with subtitles, but I could swear that some enemies and even some important secondary characters refer to me as "he" and "him."

Most egrigiously, I thought, was that in a scene in which your character is interrogated, their shirt is being ripped apart to expose (presumably) the chest. If you were to play a male character, the way the scene plays out would not be extraordinary. Playing a woman, this scene feels incredibely disjointed and out-of-place in a way that was definitely not intended for reasons I can't even put into words.

You play a silent protagonist, but everytime my character grunts, screams or is visible I am reminded by this profound sense of dissonance that pervades my experience of playing Far Cry 5. It's like my character doesn't belong into the world she saves and influences so thoroughly. The way other characters interact with me, the way they look at me and the way they refer to me does not match the person I am playing as.

Far Cry 3 in particular consciously created a dissonance between the player and the character that started out with the very basics of his being, primarily his "broness." That was fine because it was clearly intended. The dissonance in Far Cry 5 is simply, for lack of a better word, awkward.

We're almost 5 years into this console generation, and Xbox One still doesn't have a break-out new AAA IP

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:04 AM PDT

For me personally, this generation overall has been underwhelming when pertaining to Xbox One. So much so that I ended up selling my X1 last August. I thought Sea of Thieves would be the game to get me back on the boat, but that ship sailed and sank. With that said, I'm going to wait until E3 to see if I should re-invest, and purchase an Xbox One X. I understand that State of Decay 2 is the next "big" game, which definitely looks promising, however I'm still not completely sold.

Now when I look over to the competition, I see that PS4 has had Bloodborne and Horizon Zero Dawn as break-out new AAA IPs, with more potentially coming down the pipeline. Nintendo don't have much, but they've been doing just fine with Mario and Zelda; Nintendo always seem to reinvent the wheel with their games, so it's not merely just regurgitated. They're having huge success right now with the Switch.

Now to MS with the X1. They've released Sunset Overdrive, Ryse Son of Rome, Quantum Break, Recore and the most recent Sea of Thieves. What do these games have in common? They've all commercially flopped (SoT is yet to be seen, but it's future looks bleak).

I'm sure many of you are very happy with what MS have provided this generation, and to that I say good for you. I don't mean to piss on anyone's parade, however for me personally it's been rather abysmal.

I hope at this year's E3, MS will once again captivate me and reinvigorate my interest in the Xbox brand.

Overview

The Global StarCraft II League (GSL) is the highest level of competition in StarCraft II, featuring the absolute best players of the game. It has been running since 2010 starting with Wings of Liberty and the Code S, the regular league format of the GSL, is considered the most prestigious event in the scene. This is the first season of GSL for 2018.

The Grand Finals of 2018's first GSL feature Team Splyce's Kim "Stats" Dae Yeob (Protoss) and Jin Air Greenwings' Cho "Maru" Seong Ju (Terran). Both made it to the finals after grueling, close matches throughout the both the group stages and the playoffs.

Stats is coming off the most consistent 12 months ever for a StarCraft II player, as defined by percentage of semifinals in a 12-month period, equaled only by StarCraft II legend Mvp. Following that impressive year, people had claimed he was slumping, especially following his failure to reach the group stages of IEM Katowice, but with this finals appearance all eyes are once again on him as possibly the best Protoss player in the world. Is this his return to peak performance?

Maru is coming off of an already incredibly impressive 2018, taking second at IEM Katowice winning WESG 2017, which has made him the highest-earning StarCraft II player ever in terms of prize money. He is by all accounts in incredible shape, but has never won a GSL so far. Will this be his first?

The event is cast in English by Brendan Valdes and Reid "RAPiD" Melton.

Psycho Mantis' 4th wall break: How could different games use something similar?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 07:08 PM PDT

In Metal Gear Solid, Psycho Mantis proves they can read your mind by reading the memory card of your console, and telling you what game you've been playing recently. The only way to defeat him is plug the controller into the other port on the console. I saw it in a video concerning Top Ten Video Game 4th Wall Breaks, and I was pretty surprised. If I was playing a game and something similar like that happened, I would become incredibly nervous.

What games would you like to see have Psycho Mantis-esque 4th wall breaks? And, more importantly, what would these 4th wall breaks be like?

Iron Harvest devs expose their ideas to mitigate the skill gap frustration for the multiplayer mode of their RTS

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 10:08 AM PDT

There's a (successful) kickstarter campaign going on for the RTS Iron Harvest and the developpers just published their goals for the multiplayer mode, notably their ideas to mitigate the frustration and the issues that usually come from the RTS competitive modes. You can read the entire post and the full bullet point list here but I wanted to highlight some points to hear your thoughts on the matter. Personally, I find their vision interesting, exciting but also very ambitious...

This is a short selection of their intentions :

  • Anti-snowballing: If you are behind in a game, you should have several options and a little assistance to get back on track. If you are winning, it should get harder and harder to keep the lead and close the deal. In any case, a small mistake early on should not seal you fate.

  • Keeping the player pool (potential opponents) as big as possible: We will prevent fragmentation of our online community, in order to keep match making wait times as short as possible. To help with that, there will be a handicap system, where better players will have additional tasks in a match and/or weaker players will get some bonuses.

  • One of our goals is to keep matches exciting for as long as possible. If you make a mistake or are behind, it won't be a death sentence. Players won't leave matches if they think they still have a chance and even if you are ahead, you have to stay vigilant. [In the full post they go more in details about some mechanics that could prevent predictability]

  • Whenever a unit dies in a multiplayer match, you'll get back some of the resource cost of this unit. The amount of the "refund" depends on your and your opponents' skill levels (handicap system), as well as on the match phase. At the beginning of a match you might get 100% back, so a lost unit "only" means lost time. Later on, you might get 50% back and at some point 0% (to ramp up the pressure and to make sure games won't take forever).

  • Before a match, players can spend a certain amount of points to spawn units. Based on their handicap, better players get to spend fewer points. Therefore, they are at a disadvantage and have to fight harder. Maybe there will even be an option not to spend some of these points and get more XP out of the match.

  • Our goal is to make multiplayer matches fun and worthwhile for each player. If you are a really good player, occasionally, you might not have enough competitors. However, instead of slaying newbies and getting nothing out of it (XP-wise), you can play a handicap match and make it harder for you (in exchange for XP). At the same time, weaker players can play against better players regularly and learn from them.

  • [Not the same post but repeated many times through the campaign] Players need enough time to assess a situation, explore all possibilities, come up with a plan and execute that plan. Tactics have to be more important than clicks per seconds.

What happened to the Mario and Luigi RPG series?

Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:48 PM PDT

Just to preface so I don't send across the wrong message I would like to say I'm a fan of Nintendo games. Although I'm not a big fan or someone that even had Nintendo in my childhood outside of Pokemon (I was more of a Sega mega drive and PS1 sort of guy), I still like my fair share of games by Nintendo like the 3D mario series and up until recently the mario RPG's.

So, a couple of days ago I order mario and Luigi dream team bros off eBay because I absolutely loved the DS game where they're inside bowser. But today I just had to put it down because I'm so disappointed with it and I'm wondering if I've missed something or whether people here have had the same experience.

At the time of putting it down I'm around 4 hours in and it's like I've had a 4 hour tutorial. I tried to give the game chance but it's awful. I had a look on google to see if this is just some long tutorial period and apparently the whole game is like it. I gave up and put it down where it now lays on my coffee table.

So have I missed a trick here and this wasn't meant as a continuation of the franchise? Or have the mario RPG's really been turning and becoming more of a nanny game where I have to have my hand held?

What's your opinions guys? Any more recent games that have been better or is this a new trend for the series?
