Capcom Pro Tour 2018 Announcement Trailer

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 08:00 AM PST

I turn 45 soon and I just hit Diamond. And I had to blow up my game twice in order to do it.

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 04:56 PM PST

REALLY LONG READ BUT HOPEFULLY OTHERS WILL FIND THE INFO USEFUL

TLDR: Don't camp for long, always try to get better and be willing to blow up the way you play.

Long Version: I made it to Gold soon after the release of the game just by using SF fundamentals and using Chun a little like a really fast Guile, if they jumped I would EX SBK like it was a Flash Kick. I had no confirms other than big punishes and my idea of Oki was a meaty Fireball. And regardless of who I was facing, I did the same tactics on every character regardless of match up. I just figured almost 30 years of Street Fighter gave me enough to be instantly good at SFV.

So from March of S1 to December, I camped out at Gold thinking Gold was good enough for me. I could practice and improve with high level players. But I didn't get better... I got really good at playing Golds but I was free to ranks higher. I didn't care about losing to Plats at the beginning because I was all like "OK so I lost to a pro, shit happens... Not like there are a ton of Platinum players out there." Problem is, eventually I noticed that there were more and more players hitting Plat ranks and I started to feel left behind. So I cleaned up my overly simple but still messy play style and progressed through to Platinum. I didn't really change anything other than playing safer, which is all I thought I needed to start moving up again.

I was wrong.

I spent months camping out at Platinum getting owned by Ultra Plats and a few Diamonds and I would wonder what the hell I was missing? I wasn't playing unsafe ever, but everyone seemed to have the absolute best read on me no matter what. It soon became a big realization that being better at what got me to that point wasn't going get me anywhere. I needed to changes things drastically.

So after being coached by a few generous souls (Tao, KenGriff, Rawbertson), I started to change up my game.

The biggest thing I needed to do was learn mobility and patience. First off, it was pointed out to me that I never actually walked with Chun... I would only dash in. Just dashing gives away my landing position while being vulnerable during the animation. I thought that dashing would make my opponents nervous, instead I was giving them a tell and a big opportunity to hit me. Turns out Chun just walking forward is kinda menacing. Both her walk speed and her great buttons, lots of the time, people don't like her just bulldogging forward. Her forward walk could actually be a catalyst for a decision from my opponent. That was a big revelation for me. That her walking forward has all of her great options available to her but her dash does nothing to surprise people and also makes her open to hits.

I also needed to give up on my charge or at least learn to hide it better. Constantly holding down-back doesn't exactly hide my intention as to what I am doing but I am not making my opponent work at trying to pin down my location... I would almost always be sitting still to charge and try to brick wall them in the middle of the screen. I had small success with that but for the most part, everyone was eventually able to open me up and pick me apart. So again, just walking around would make things a little more difficult for people to plan out their offense. I would lose my charge yeah but I needed to learn how to play effectively without it.

Regarding patience, the biggest thing I needed to accept what reset to neutral. When blocking a ton of blockstrings or set ups, I would get blown up in the biggest way trying to retaliate with equal force of what I just ate. And at the higher level of play, players don't give you the opportunity to drop a 35 hit combo on them after the just dropped it on you.

So I need to learn to outlast their offense, defend it as well as I could and eventually let things reset to neutral where I could then jockey for position and look for my way in. Not looking to answer the damage I took with moves just as big saved me from hanging myself. It's OK to take some hits but don't rush to get that life lead of theirs back immediately. You have to find the right window to deal damage back.

In looking for those right windows, that is where I learned match ups and adaptation. I can't hope to use Chun's EX SBK like Flash Kick against Cammy or Necalli. And if I took on a ton of damage, I can't look to get back in the game by attacking Zangief like he's Ryu.

So I went from one universal tactic to more playing what my opponents were giving me. I worked screen position and finding those right gaps to get in on people from my mobility. I camped out in Plat from April of last year to September. I started getting consistent with beating higher ranked players, even Diamonds. So I set out to rank up again. I made Super Plat in no time but then I stopped getting better again.

I platuea'd.

I could play Ultra Plats and Diamonds pretty consistently but was still free to above that. Like completely free. And it bugged me... I had my good SF foundation and blew it up for the better and there was a level of player that I didn't even understand what it was that they were seeing in the game that I couldn't. And while I know I am not seeing what Daigo and MOV see, I should be able to least see what they are doing that I am missing. I couldn't and I was stuck.

Ultimately NagaSiren, Desseler, Shade Prince and Chunat1on (all in the Chun Discord) all helped me to see what I was missing. I was playing Street Fighter yeah, but I wasn't playing SFV. To that point I was still using meaty Fireballs. It made my opponent block on their wake up but that's all it did. What meaty Fireballs didn't do was force any decision by my opponent. In SFV, opponent knockdown with Oki is HUGE and I was letting my opponents off the hook by just making them block a Fireball.

After being taught what proper Okimeze, I started really understanding the SFV meta. Score an Oki KD, use a real meaty to try to get another KD and repeat, all while your opponent needs to figure out when they want to try and stop you. By only doing meaty Fireballs, I basically resetting the neutral for my opponents and I would have to work hard to try to find another KD.

Nowadays I use the advantage on KD more while mixing in meaty FB's to keep players locked down. But I feel like I just started playing SFV. Also, and this is a bit embarrassing, but I just started using Chun's BnB in December of S2. I always thought I could get along just fine without out it. Man that was dumb! If anything just using it for pressure and trying to confirm off it can give a chance for another Knock Down.

So now my game was the years of experience, added mobility, on the fly adjustments and real oki and BnB's. And I got to Diamond...

Wonder if I will be able to figure out how to get higher than that.

Thanks for reading... Here's the nervous replay of the ranked up match if anyone wants to see it.

Is there no matchmaking? (SFV)

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 05:34 AM PST

As a new player, also new to fighting games in general, I knew how unforgiving this was gonna be, but still I constantly find myself against way way higher ranked players. Are there no rookies out there? Not that I have any expectation on ranking or winning, I consider every game as an extended training session, to practice what I practiced in training against a human opponent, but still sometimes it would be nice to pretend to have a shot at winning instead of getting destroyed.

I really want to play this game...

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 05:50 AM PST

...but the matchmaking doesn't seem to work for me. The average time i spend in que is ~5 min. At PEAK hours I will be waiting for 8 min to match up with someone from US or Canada with a three dot connection (I live in Germany).

I tried making exceptions for the ports on my firewall but that doesn't seem to be helping. I also do not have a router to port forward from (that's how the internet is in my building). But the games I DO get are usually P2P, except for the intercontinental ones.

My connection is stable and relatively fast.

What could I do to fix this? I really like this game, it sucks that I can't play it properly T_T

Noob question: what are the most defensive characters?

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 07:03 AM PST

Hello guys

I picked this game a few weeks ago and have been maining Cammy (70 online matches so far, 20% win rate). I still suck a lot, and one of the things I realized is that I'm really bad at the defensive aspects of the game: patiently defending without spamming buttons, doing proper punish combos, anti-airing decently, etc. While I'm trying to learn all this with Cammy, her offensive kit kinda encourages me to abandon this strategy and go for the pressure game. So I've been thinking about learning a more defensive character for a while in order to try to get better in the defensive mindset, and later go back to Cammy. I know my problem is not Cammy's fault, but I think I'll probably grow more as a player if I spent a while in a 24/7 turtle/zoning mode for a while.

I've been doing some googling on the subject and it seems Guile is pointed as the most defensive character. Some people were also mentioning Ryu, Fang, Dhalsin and there were some mentions do Chun-Li, Zanguief and Menat. I also got some mixed signals with Balrog (some people saying he's all rushdown, some people saying patience is his best game plan).

What are (all) the characters that really reward me for holding back and trying to spend all the game doing anti-airs, punish combos and long-rage attacks? I mean, except for Guile.

Thanks a lot!

[Street Fighter Zero III] Saturn version speed settings question

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 05:36 AM PST

Hi folks, Playing SFZ3 on SEGA Saturn, can someone confirm which speed setting is accurate to the arcade version?

The available settings are the following:

  • DEFAULT
  • FREE1 & FREE2
  • TURBO1 to TURBO7

I feel like TURBO4 has a nice feeling in term of speed but I can't find the information on which is one to pick up to match the arcade version.

Cheers!

What to check for in PC SFV online lag?

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 05:20 AM PST

Hey all i play sfv alot on pc with mostly smooth gameplay with 4 to 5 bars. I have another pc in the same house which is exactly the same (hardware wise) as the one I currently use, but has horrendous lag online every match. It is used by my brother so it has different software installed besides sf.

Any tips or pointers on how to fix this issue. I know there's not an issue with the actual internet connection but I cant figure out what to look at software wise to fix this. I checked the firewall settings and they are all good as well as antivirus.

New sensei wanting some advice

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 07:49 AM PST

Hey guys! So, one of my friends who has NEVER played a fighting game before wants me to teach him Ultra Street Fighter IV. I haven't ever taught somebody this game before, and thought I'd run my lesson plan by you guys before I hop into it.

1) basic movement

2) normals

3) throws and Focus Attack

4) practice fights vs. Me (I'll let him win)

5) specials

6) EX Moves

7) Supers

8) Ultra

9) more practice vs me (won't go as easy)

10) Ryu's Arcade Playthrough

What should I change? Should I add anything? Cut anything?

Cannot find fix for slow motion on my laptop, help please

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 09:49 AM PST

Hey there, I've been wanting to play sfv on my laptop (i5-6200u, GTX 940m, 8gb ram) but it runs in slow mo as soon as I get into character select and in game. Menus are fine. I've made sure I'm running it with my dedicated graphics, I've made sure my CPU power settings are max, I've disabled core 0 and set game to run in priority, I've whitelisted it in my antivirus, and all of my drivers are updated. The game runs perfect on my desktop gaming rig but it's really frustrating to not be able to play on my laptop. It runs all other games perfectly. Any suggestions?

Please tell me how to fucking anti air with Alex

Posted: 19 Feb 2018 05:22 AM PST

I' an ultra bronze scrub and hence, I must deal with bunnies all the time. Non stop jumping Ryus every single day of the week. And I get crossed up so god damn much. Especially his mk cross up which gets me every time.

And the worst is that I can see it coming pretty much at every jump! But I struggle to punish them. I get pressured quite horribly and Alex's dragon is so slow! Its activation takes forever and I have to trigger it the second they jump otherwise I get comboed.

His lariat is also quite slow and it's currently my best option to anti air them but if they neutral jump, then the hitbox doesn't always hit.

And his jab anti air doesn't work as much as it used to before, has it changed or something recently?

Halp plz, I want to reach silver.
