Imagine this for a second

Posted: 01 Feb 2018 02:27 PM PST

Imagine grinding a boss for as long as you wanted to, so long as your supplies and personal stamina allowed it, without any drawbacks.

Imagine taking a break from solo PvM after any kill and coming back whenever you want to, without any drawbacks. Maybe you want to go eat because you're hungry, or your mom called you for dinner. Maybe you just want to do a clue scroll or take a walk for some fresh air.

Imagine getting an invite to a group boss during your solo PvM trip and being able to say yes without being punished for it.

Imagine forming a team to go to a boss for any amount of time. Imagine being able to pick roles only on the basis of capability and necessity. Imagine, when someone leaves a team, being able to find a replacement for any given amount of time, or just disbanding without any significant loss.

Imagine not being forced to use three different styles in four hours, and choosing which content you want to grind in any order you want to grind it without being inefficient.

Imagine a new/returning player or a fresh ironman being able to start PvMing without any hassle as soon as gear and content unlocks allowed for it, without absurd timegates.

Imagine if content was only balanced around players' gear, stats, and capability.

Imagine if you could just play the damn game without arbitrary scheduling restrictions.

I only play RS3, but it must be real nice for those OSRS players never having to worry about any of this stuff, considering everything I asked you to imagine is exactly how it works in their game.

Delete auras btw

Returning player's impressions of Runescape 3

Posted: 02 Feb 2018 05:24 AM PST

I'm a player who started playing Runescape in 2004 and I switched to playing OSRS in 2012. I came back to RS3 a few weeks ago and in that time I've been trying out new content and catching up on the quest line. Here are my impressions of the game:

Graphics

The graphics of Runescape look fantastic, although I personally play on an awful laptop and can't use anything better than the worst settings. Many areas have been reworked and while I don't like some of them – the Burthorpe/Taverly area comes to mind, a bit too much going on there – the reworks I have seen are overwhelmingly awesome. I especially like Brimhaven dungeon! Jagex put a lot of resources into making their game shine in my 5 years of absence and it really paid off.

Quests

I had 33 quests to do when I logged in, and most of them were Master/Grandmaster! One thing I noticed was a definite paradigm shift towards heavier stories with more emphasis on the player ("world guardian btw"). I'm not sure how to feel about this, as I certainly like playing the role of the anonymous adventurer in runescapes traditional quests, but I can't deny that they are very well made. A personal favourite of mine is the one where Saradomin gets you to do the ritual in the black knights' castle.

Combat

In 2012 I primarily played on a pure account, so the release of EoC hit me very hard. Going in with a very negative preconception of EoC, I found myself positively surprised. Trying the new combat system on quest bosses turned out to be quite fun. One thing that I must point out is that the 0.6 game tick system and the tiled movement system stick out like a sore thumb when contrasted by the sweet graphics and modern combat mechanics. When you play OSRS, the models are more or less made to "fit" the ingame tiles so it is much more intuitive when you need to move away from a specific tile to avoid a boss' projectile, for instance.

In RS3 this was often difficult. One example is the fight against Graardor in "The Mighty Falls". He chips away at the platform and the player must avoid the tiles that fall off to prevent damage. The platform, however, has very few details that hint where the tiles are, and which tiles are affected by his smash attack, making it feel very clunky when you try to dodge this ability. This is just one example of what I mean, but I noticed this almost every time a boss mechanic required me to dodge something.

MTX

Of all the things that surprised me about Runescape 3 was the MTX. I started playing the game with an incredible aversion towards the idea of buying experience or gaudy cosmetics, judging by what I saw posted on here and /r/2007scape. The reality is that it doesn't bother me at all. It's not too in-your-face, and it's actually very rare that you see players with 3p1k HUGE wingz and other kitschy cosmetic items. The only problem I have with buying experience is that it decimates Runescape's competetive skilling scene, but that doesn't affect me personally.

Dailies

One of the biggest paradigm shifts since 2012 has been the heavy focus on what I'll just call "time sensitive" content.

To do some of the new quests I had to grind out a couple of skills, notably construction and divination. To my surprise, the most time AND gold efficient way to train these skills is through minigames. Traditionally, methods of skilling in Runescape involve the player balancing GP/Hour against XP/Hour. These new alternative skilling methods (warbands and divination) seem to undermine this economic choice, balanced of course by their time restricted nature. I honestly don't even know how to train divination the normal way and I'm level 54 in the skill!

I don't see an inherit fault in balancing the best methods via time gates, and I commend Jagex for trying out new things. However, from my experience, it ended up with me logging in to do Warbands and Crevice of Guthix and immediately logging out afterwards. Training the skills the "regular" way in the downtime seemed like a waste of gold and time. I think this problem is most significant for new and returning players, who do not have more than several long-term goals. Players looking to max their account will have other goals to work towards to fill in the time between minigames; more casual players and beginners like me, however, will not.

From a business perspective this time-gating makes a lot of sense. Jagex doesn't earn money per hour played, but instead they earn money based off of how many months a player plays. Making players plan their goals in terms of weeks instead of hours earns them more money. For players like me, however, this business model doesn't work that great. I am "invested" in a game when I can play extended sessions and grind out goals without having to take detours or wasting my time doing inferior skilling methods.

Auras

My gripes with Auras are very similar to my arguements against Dailies in the paragraphs above. Auras are best in slot, game-breaking advantages that you earn by... being "loyal"? The very nature of loyalty points excludes many types of players from ever getting them, such as myself.

I usually play in short bursts: I buy a bond with ingame currency and play for 2 weeks. If my interest dwindles, I put off buying another bond for maybe a week to a few months. I, and people in my situation, will never obtain the BIS auras, regardless of how much effort we put into the game, simply because of the way we choose to consume Runescape as a product.

Another reason I play like this is because I feel that buying membership in packages of several months to a year severely compromises my influence as a customer. What happens if I get bored of the game? What happens if I don't like the direction the game is headed? If you look at the situation from this perspective, you might see why buying something like premium membership in order to get loyalty points would feel a lot like selling out.

I have to say that auras are a very big turn-off to me. A long-term goal of mine was to start bossing, but the idea that an integral PVM item was locked behind paying for many months of membership away made me incredibly desinterested in pursuing it further.

Community

The community is incredibly different in RS3 compared to OSRS. To me it seems like the demographics in RS3 are polarized on the age spectrum. The majority of players are in their 20s it would seem, same as OSRS, but there are apparently many older (30+) players and at the same time there is a higher amount of very young players (10-16) than OSRS. It's so cool to see youngsters playing Runescape!

One thing I've noticed is that players are less responsive to me when I play RS3 compared to OSRS. I've tried to strike up conversations in RS3 at the G.E. many times without success. Once I asked for helped was was told "google it". This might also be because the population density is a noticeably lower in RS3. The players who DO answer me, however, are incredibly friendly and the conversations are less meme-y than OSRS (which is pretty refreshing).

All in all I learned a lot about how the game I fell in love with in 5th grade developed and grew. It's a great game and while I prefer the direction OSRS is taking, I'm sure RS3 will have a long and bright future ahead of it. I ran out of membership and I'm back to playing OSRS, but I plan to buy another bond on my RS3 account in the near future and get that quest cape done!

Feel free to add me, IGN is Bodhisattva
