Minecraft Bi-Weekly Build Challenge #39: Horrifying Landscape

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:16 AM PST

LAST WEEK'S THEME: FAMILY HOME

Hey guys! I'm really sick this weekend and barely had enough energy to make this post. Anyway, because these parts take the most time (which is too much for me right), sadly I haven't been able to make the write up on the winners or update the leaderboard. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to do those things. Another thing is that I'll probably not be on reddit much so if any of you have any questions, chances are I personally won't respond until tomorrow or Tuesday. However, the other judges should be around!

Gold

TribblesIA

Silver

TooteeFrootee

Bronze

TehDarga

Honourable mentions

Crisis4051

Introduction

Ahhh!

You spooked me there! What better way to follow up a nice family challenge than with a horrifying horror challenge! This time, we're building scary things that'll try and creep everyone out!

Good luck and don't be too scared!

New Textures

People have been asking about the new textures. As of now, the textures are only in the testing phase and will possibly change in the future. We have decided that we'll wait from allowing them in the build challenge as of now until there's a more official release of them. This may change next challenge as we, the judges, haven't had a full discussion on the matter but as of now, this is the ruling. Happy building!

Inspiration

Creepy Mansion

Challenge

Horror Landscape

Make something scary. You'll notice how I used landscape and not the traditional mansion or haunted house. This is because I'm giving you guys the choice to make anything that you see scary! Horrify us the best you can but amaze us with your builds!

Recap of Jeb's talk at the PC Gamer Weekender: on Dolphins, Phantoms and more

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:41 PM PST

Yesterday, Jeb gave a presentation about Update Aquatic at the PC Gamer Weekender event. Sadly, his talk didn't appear on their livestreams and so far they haven't posted a video of it. Luckily we had /u/_Mihro_ attending, who brought back an audio recording and a photo from the presentation. Thanks a lot, /u/_Mihro_!

The following is a list of newly released info about Update Aquatic and generally interesting tidbits from that presentation.

People like screenshots, so we'll start with this concept art made for picking up fish using buckets.

On dolphins:

  • "The dolphins will follow you when you ride a boat. If you feed it fish, it will try to guide you to where you can find treasure underwater."
  • "They like to jump over things and they will also - items float now, if you drop them underwater - dolphins like to play with the items."
  • "You can grab a fin and it will pull you along, so you can feed it and then grab onto it and it will try to guide you towards treasure."
  • "The treasure finding behavior will probably not be in next week's snapshot, but the dolphin will be released soon."
  • "Dolphins act as wolves - so if you hit them, they would gang up on you."

On the phantom:

  • About the phantom's eyes in the preview rendering: "People pointed out that it felt like an enderman, so we made it even more ender-like, and then someone pointed out that it was kinda sad that everything is kinda pigeon-holed into the ender-something or the wither-something or the illager or something. So we wanted to give it its own face, so we changed the eyes to green."
  • About phantoms spawning in the end: "The problem is, of course, that if you're in the end, you essentially just get one hour game time before they start spawning, and then you can't really prevent them to continue spawning. So we're brainstorming either things that they will drop that you can use to reset the insomnia timer, if you call it that, or other measurements that you can use to escape them."

Water mechanics, coral slabs, ocean biomes, shipwrecks & bubble columns:

  • "If you put a stair on flowing water, the flow will be blocked, just like it is now in today's Minecraft, but you can put it in a source block and you will have both a stair and a source block."
  • "The coral block that was shown at Minecon Earth had half slabs, but we decided to only go with the full blocks, and the half slabs are now only for crafted stone materials."
  • "We will add ocean biomes, so there will be cold, normal and warm biomes, and then the freezing biomes, so the kelp will be mainly in the cold biomes and the coral will be in the warm biomes. The sea grass will be everywhere."
  • "The shipwrecks are going to use the stripped log block for the masts. This will contain [...] a new special treasure."
  • About magma blocks and soul sand being used for bubble columns: "We're still trying to brainstorm different blocks to use for this."

On how the game is currently developed:

  • "Our team is aiming to do 2 major feature releases per year, so now were working on Update Aquatic and we're planning to do one more this year."
  • "We do the feature now in 2 studios, so in Stockholm we do the Java Edition and in Redmond we do the Bedrock edition that is used on phones and Windows 10."
  • "We're trying to split the feature development, and then port them both ways."

If chickens laid eggs like turtles

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 03:37 PM PST

I posted this earlier but since I'm still fairly new I didn't know that suggested need to be more explained haha So, here's my thoughts behind the post :)

  • Turtle breeding seems to be a really unique and new feature for the game and it definitely adds a little more interest to the current mob list. From here on out, every egg laying mob that is added to the game should have the same mechanic as the turtles now. Otherwise it might seems so strange and out of place to have other non mammals just popping out full babies.

  • Instead, when breeding, the chicken will place their eggs as turtles do. The chickens should only be able to place their eggs on hay blocks, (which will act as "nests") much like how the turtles will only drop their eggs on sand. This will give another functional feature to the hay block. https://imgur.com/a/TMO8q

  • Perhaps wool could even be used as "nests" too, for a fun way to customize a chicken coop.

  • The current egg item drop will be eliminated but the eggs will still be able to be silk touched for recipes like cakes. But I think you should be able to SHIFT+RMB to pick the eggs up. This would be much better for players starting out who still want a chicken farm and want to cook with the eggs.

  • The chicken eggs could be cooked, allowing for recipe like "Hard-boiled" eggs or maybe mixed with sugar for pudding to give a little more hunger and maybe even a speed (sugar rush) boost for a few seconds! Nothing too crazy, I don't want to turn this into Pam's HarvestCraft haha

  • The eggs should look different from the turtle eggs, so they can be distinguished apart from one another.

  • Ocelots could also go after the chicken eggs, the way they go after the chickens, if they are not kept safe. But instead of jumping on the eggs the ocelots could take them and if the ocelot is caught (tamed or killed) it could drop the egg -if you deem a chicken egg more valuable than an ocelot-

  • Foxes go after chicken eggs too (irl), but I can't imagine the wolf caring about them (game wise). But that could be something to think about for any other animal introductions later down the road.

In the end, I think giving chickens, and any other animal from here on out that lays eggs, the ability to lay eggs would be a really great mechanic to add a little more variety and life to the game! I'd love to hear what you think and what you would add to the suggestions I offered! :)
