Can you find a stronghold using only 2 eyes of ender and some math(s)?

Posted: 17 Feb 2018 10:54 AM PST

Yes. Kinda... By throwing 2 eyes 200 blocks away from each other (you could go further but risk them pointing to different strongholds) and measuring the angle they take you can work out almost exactly where the stronghold is. I did this by using the sine rule and then some normal trigonometry to find the co-ordinates. https://imgur.com/a/z45Bq to see my (terrible) working out.

My estimate was a little bit off (70 blocks away from the end portal and 20ish blocks from the structure itself) from the true location so perhaps some smart people can figure how to do it more precisely. I'm pretty dumb so it might be something very obvious I'm missing/doing totally wrong.

I'm sorry if my awful working out made you throw up and my tiny messy handwriting made you squint I'll be happy to try and explain it in the comments. Thanks if you read this really long post about math(s) in Minecraft I had quite a bit of fun working it out :).

Why Turtle Breeding is the Best Breeding Mechanic Minecraft Has Ever Had

Posted: 17 Feb 2018 06:28 PM PST

Breeding in MInecraft is very simple. You give 2 adults some food, they mate, spawn a baby, and you wait for them to grow. However, turtle breeding is different. Instead of laying babies, they lay actual eggs, which will eventually hatch into babies. When the babies grow, they drop scutes, which can be used to make turtle shells and potions. In my opinion, this mechanic is the best breeding mechanic ever.

The Motivation to Breed

All the breeding mechanics before turtles were wasteful. Breeding animals and waiting the babies to grow is less efficient than killing them all off and waiting for another natural spawn. Think about passive mob farms that flush the animals into the nether. The lower the mob cap is, the more efficient the farm will be.

However, turtle breeding is worth giving them food and waiting for the babies to grow. Because scutes are dropped when the babies grow, it is impossible to get them if you kill the adults. Unless you're working on a sea grass farm, killing turtles are worthless compared to breeding them.

The Need for Protection

Babies in Minecraft are stronger than adults. It's not about baby zombies being faster and not burning, but adult animals are more vulnerable to players, because they give the players loot upon death. If ocelots and wolves attack chicken, sheep and rabbits, they attack both the adult and the baby.

However, zombies and skeletons trample turtle eggs and attack baby turtles. To get the scutes, players have to protect the eggs and babies. The scutes work as a thank you reward from the turtles to the players that protected them from these hostile mobs.

Comparison Between Each Passive Mobs

  • Cows, pigs: Breeding them is just for gathering them in an easy-to-kill chamber. That's all.

  • Sheep: Apart from mixing coat colors, they are just like cows and pigs.

  • Chicken: They have the weirdest breeding mechanic ever. Breeding chickens with seeds is exactly the same as mammals, and they throw away their eggs on the ground and let them despawn unless a player or a hopper picks them up and throws them.

  • Llamas, Donkeys and Mules: You can breed them for more portable storage, but it is optional, because of natural respawns.

  • Horses: Horse breeding is like a lottery. If you get a good horse, you keep it, but if you get a bad one, you kill it.

  • Ocelots: Similar to donkeys, llamas and mules, breeding is optional.

  • Wolves: You can breed them to rebuild your army after a hunt, but it's also optional.

  • Villagers: Even though we make villager breeders, they are not meant to be bread.

Turtle egg mechanics in 18w07c

Posted: 17 Feb 2018 07:05 AM PST

Now, we know by bow that zombies will stomp on turtle eggs and destroy them. This prompted me to try to smash them as well (In purely educational interests, don't kill me!) and sure enough, I could. So then, naturally, I wanted to figure out what exactly can make the egg blocks break. Here's the results:

  • Mobs standing on the egg block will break it. Apparently, turtles or squid on the egg block won't break it. Pig, chicken, zombie, husk and Player confirmed to break eggs. Needs more research.

  • Items falling on top of them will break them, but won't break any additional eggs by staying on top of the block, unlike mobs.

  • Minecarts and boats won't break eggs, but armor stands will.

Some random stuff:

  • Dropping gravel, sand or an anvil onto the eggs will drop the gravity block as an item, but the item can break the egg block if the item lands on the egg block. (Bug?)

  • Water next to a egg will flow around it.

  • Shooting arrows or tridents at egg blocks will do nothing.

  • Pistons (both kinds) extending will make the egg block dissappear. No particles, no sound effect, nothing.

  • Sticky pistons can't pull eggs.

  • Blast resistance is around the same as sand (TNT destroys four blocks tall pillars).

  • Observers will detect the eggs' hatching stages and eggs breaking.

I just thought this was interesting. Post a comment if you find something else interesting! (Expecially if you can add to the list of mobs that can/can't break the eggs, I haven't had the chance to fully test that.)
