Why Role-Based Matchmaking Will Not Work Posted: 11 Feb 2018 08:20 PM PST I see this suggestion posted every few days with people suggesting they queue up in specific role which they believe will provide less-toxic games. Whilst the intention and concept sounds good, I do not believe it would work in Dota 2 -- Here's why (Feel free to disagree and discuss since these are my personal thoughts): Dota 2's Lane/Role Flexbility: Dota 2's laning phase is too flexible for this system to work. I believe League has this system implemented because their meta calls for strict 2-1-1-Jungle setup nearly every game (can someone confirm?) where Dota has many different laning configurations to start and is definitely prone to switching it up depending on enemy lineups AND how the lanes go. Another platform for toxicity: What would prevent people from queuing up as lesser-desired roles such as Position 4/5 to get a quick game only to pick a core hero anyway? Would you have them restrict certain heroes that can't be played as Support? But then who deems a hero unplayable as a Support? I've seen some crazy Support picks in Pro games and even weirder ones in Pubs. Not everyone queues up with a role in mind: I may be speaking for myself but I can guarantee a large portion of players hits the Play Dota button wanting to get into a game. They're ready to play any role that fits the team lineup. This is a lesser factor but still a factor to think about. An increase in queue times: Higher MMR/Medal players already experience long queue times; implementing this type of system would only increase it further coupled with Behaviour Score being a large factor in Matchmaking. In summary; I believe the only way the role-based matchmaking would work if all players were friendly and communicative. But then if they were, we wouldn't even need this system implemented in the first place.
