First Submission to the DayZ subreddit, I love DayZ and I have a decent 1500 hours in it (this is by no means a lot when compared to many in the DayZ community). I by no means am an expert on any of the mechanics of the game, much of what I say is based on speculation, dev blogs, imperfect tests, and more speculation. TAKE EVERYTHING I SAY WITH A GRAIN OF SALT! The Devs have yet to release detailed information about how these mechanics work. Now that that disclaimer is over, let's get to the post.

-----MY UNDERSTANDING OF HEALTH/DAMAGE IN DAYZ-----

There are four main forms of damage that can be inflicted in DayZ, they are as follows: Shock, Blood, Health, and Bone.

Blood- Based on a 5000 point scale. Blood Damage is taken every time you are hit by something and while bleeding, bleeding can stack but one rag will always remove the status effect. This is the most common cause of death in DayZ. When a player's blood is below 500 they will automatically be unconscious. A player can regenerate blood relatively quickly naturally, or use a saline/blood bag for immediate results. Blood loss will be reduced greatly if the clothing you are wearing is pristine. A t-shirt that is pristine has more protection value than a worn TTSKO jacket as far as blood is concerned. Deaths of this nature are characterized as having gone unconscious until death, presumably from blood loss.

Shock- Damage inflicted when hit, if this value exceeds your blood value at any time, you will be unconscious. Naturally decreases over time. Epinephrine shot should lower a player's shock value, and it has in the past, however, it's current functionality is unknown.

Health- An almost useless stat. Based on a 5000 point scale. Health damage is taken every time you are hit, just like blood, but in lower numbers. Your blood value must be at 5000 for it to start regenerating. Regenerates slowly by comparison with blood. I've had conversations with some of the admins on OldSchoolDayZ (a currently dead private PVP server), and I was told that for the entire .61 patch, 1 person died because of health loss. Oldschool was a decently populated server during most of the .61 update only dipping off toward the end because of the experimental servers. The reason that health deaths are rare is that health takes a very long time to reach zero, and the only situation in which it would be important is if a player was to be constantly shot in the arms/legs while having blood and splints applied to them. Otherwise, they would die because of spinal damage, critical hits, or blood loss long before their health could even come close to 0. Health loss will be reduced greatly if the clothing you are wearing is pristine. A t-shirt that is pristine has more protection value than a worn TTSKO jacket as far as health is concerned.

Bone Damage- The most strange and convoluted of the health systems. Your player has many different body parts that are rendered by the engine. each body part has a multiplier one of three bones stats: Legs, Arms, and Spine. Legs- When this stat reaches 0, you can no longer move without being prone, and you can only crouch. Use of splints and morphine heal bone damage to be in perfect condition. Pretty slow Regeneration. Arms- When this stat reaches 0, your weapon sway will increase greatly. Use of splints and morphine heal bone damage to be in perfect condition. Pretty slow Regeneration. Spine- When this stat reaches 0, you die. Use of splints and morphine will not heal spinal damage. Horribly slow regeneration. This stat is the least understood, I know from personal experience that this stat takes a very long time to regenerate and is one of the reasons why as your character gets into more and more fights, the more likely they are to die because of this stat lowering. There is little that can be done about having a low spinal stat, the best option for regeneration is to kill yourself and grab your gear instead of waiting literal days in order to regenerate your characters spinal stat. Deaths of "spinal tap" often are characterized and having been one hit, instant kills by a shot to the chest when you had the "Health" Status indicator.

 Critical hits- Each time one of a players leg or arm is broken, and each subsequent shot to a player's arm, has a chance of causing a critical hit. The server will record the one shot as having been 5 or even 7 around many parts of the body. Deadly Slob pointed this out when he was killed by a single Winchester shot to the arm (when looking at the server logs, he had been hit by the single round 7 times all at the same moment). The best way to avoid this is to split up after every engagement. 

I'm gonna focus on ballistic damage because I don't really care about the other forms of damage very much

Bullet damage is calculated by: Bullet itself- Whether it is a 5.56x45 or a 7.62x39, or a 7.62x54 etc. Speed of bullet- lower speed = less damage Angle the bullet hits the player- Wheather the player is it at a 90-degree angle or a 20-degree angle for example The Ballistic stat of the clothing- each 1 ballistic point is a 5% reduction in damage The Condition of the Clothing- Pristine blocks 50% and badly damaged blocks 40%, ruined blocks nothing How full the clothing is- This impacts spinal and bone damage

Now I'm gonna run through a few actual experiences to illustrate why I think the health system is too complicated and leads to inconsistency.

I saw a player running in a field in front of me, I shot him once in the leg, twice in the chest, and once in the arm, but the player had only lost 1000 blood. When I asked the admins on oldschool to read off where I hit him it all became clear. Since I wasn't able to focus fire on one portion of the body, I never was able to ruin his clothing and start doing full damage and I was never able to break a bone and have the possibility of a critical hit or spinal tap.

I shot a player with an SVD at 700m, the player stands up and runs away. Since my bullet was traveling slowly and I only did around half damage in the first place because of clothing, in the end, I did about as much damage as a single sporter round.

I have been one shot countless times by AUGs and AKMs to the chest despite having the healthy indicator. On one occasion, my squad mates were there to see that only my chest piece was ruined and the player that shot me was missing only one bullet in his chamber.

Ok, so whats the point.

The problem with this level of sophistication in the health system is that this leads to a whole lot of inconsistency. Critical hits are bs as they revolve around RNG, and spinal tap in a broken mechanic which favors those who ran up from the coast only recently. Worst of all, THE DAMAGE SYSTEM ISN'T REALISTIC.

Wearing a synthetic plate vest doesn't negate 10% of incoming damage. It either stops the projectile (it'll hurt like anything, maybe even break a rib, but for the sake of simplicity we'll say that modeling internal bleeding is a bit beyond current technology in a game like DayZ), or it doesn't. Noone would wear them if that's all they did, they're pretty cumbersome and annoying to wear. Kevlar does slow the bullet down, but as I'm about to point out, this isn't always a good thing. While the speed of the bullet does affect the damage it causes, it is not directly related in the way that the devs have made it out to be. Bullets cause damage by putting a wound channel through your body. Let's use the 5.56 as an example, there are two ranges at which the 5.56 does the most damage that it can. One is at close range when the bullet is moving incredibly fast, and as such rips through the body causing a lot of damage. The other is at long range when the bullet is more likely to tumble inside the body, imagine the wound channel going from a straight 5.56 mm hole to a massive gaping, jagged wound channel. If you don't believe me, go watch some videos of ballistics gel being shot. Anyways, the range when the least amount of damage is inflicted is at medium ranges. Here the bullet is moving fast enough to pass through the body without tumbling, but lacks the kinetic energy to decimate the insides of a person. Whether or not I'm wearing a jacket when I get shot doesn't matter. How would it even come close to reducing incoming damage by 40-50%!? The 45ACP is the largest round we have in game, it is literally optimized for close range. It expands inside the body in close range. That's what it's designed to do. So why then is the 7.62 doing more damage than it. Why is it doing more damage than the 9x39mm rounds for that matter?

Anyways, I could sit here and tell you about all the inaccuracies of bullet damage in the game, but I'll just say what I think should be done.

Right Now Remove critical hits and spinal damage Increase health damage of weapons Lower damage dropoff Make it so that clothing doesn't block incoming damage from bullets In the future Change the damage model of each cartridge so that it is realistic for each of the rounds we have in game Implement a penetration value for each bullet and clothing article. EXAMPLE- T-shirt has an effective thickness of 10 units, at point-blank range, a 45 can penetrate 120 units, at 100m it can only penetrate 40, etc.

I'm sure I got some things wrong, and I'd love to be made aware of it in the comments. Remember these are just my opinions. They aren't right or wrong, they could be stupid or smart. They are subjective in nature. :D

Private servers

Anyone recommend a private server to play on? I've been on the gents server for about a year and a half now but they're shutting down so looking for another good server. Just something without badmins and a good number of players. Empty servers are no fun.

Had my first experience with believed hackers yesterday :/

I picked up the game after not playing for months and months, logged into a medium pop sever, and heard rapid gun fire in berezino.

Out of curiosity I went to check it out and followed to fading gunfire. Went to a spot with dozens of dead zombies and by my luck there was a dropped AKM with a clip. I wondered why they would drop it like that and leave but i shrugged it off and took it.

As I followed the gunfire i found another AKM on the ground but this time with a fully loaded 75 round drum. I got suspicious but took it anyway, i needed the ammo if i wanted to take this guy on.

Finally i stumbled upon a little village south of berezino and saw a silloute of a human running into a house, and i followed.

Next to the house, there was a tent set up in plain view, and i waited in the corner of a fence. A man in a ghillie suit run inside the tent and lies down for a minute and I fire at my target, and he dies.

I check his inventory and he had absolutely INSANE loot, the most perfect loadout anyone could have. I hear footsteps approach and prepare for combat inside the tent. Another man in a ghillie shoots at me and hits me and i fireback and kill him, too. I check this guys loot and he has nearly the same exact loadout as his buddy.

I was very suspicious, but i needed to focus on not bleeding out. As i was bandaging in the house, ANOTHER ghillie guy runs up and shoots me dead.

I came to conclusion they were duping or spawning items or something, I dont believe they were staff or admins or whatever. Im honestly just disappointed that there's still a lot of cases of hackers in the game.

This is my first (confirmed) cheater experience after logging almost 200 hours and owning the game since 2015, but it sill worries me that since we might be stuck in .62 for probably most of the year, more cases of hacking will pop up more rapidly.

TL;DR: Found a bunch of guys duping and i'm worried that more cases of hacking will start to pop up more rapidly.

Graphics Settings question

So I noticed that the object setting in the options is, unlike in arma 3, tied to how far you can see into houses and windows. In Dayz ST and arma 2 if I play with objects on very low(which is one of the more demanding settings, I get a 15 fps boost when i turn it to normal from very high) the buildings from lets say like 30 meters stop rendering their windows and doors, so you can't see anything inside the house, which makes the game unplayable since there are so many houses in ST. In arma 3 this is not the case, there is still that fps boost(definitely not as big as in ST, but that's probs because of the engine), even if I turn objects to low on a3, I still can see into houses.

Now my question is if there is any way to turn down objects, but still be able to look into buildings from far away. I do realize that this will sacrifice some fps, but count me in.

Hey guys, I'm new to the subreddit; however I was wondering whether you guys could recommend any YouTubers that are still/or have put out quality DAY-Z content. Obviously, I am familiar with Frankie's series; and have watched his play through multiple times. However, I was wondering whether there are any other channels that publish similar content. Baby Nades is another YouTuber in which I am familiar with too. My style of entertainment is cornerstone around; realism, role play and adventure. I don't really roll with arcade'y' or overly edited videos. Thanks fellas, (& ladies)

Why can't we have an autorun option or combination (like we used to have). Why did devs removed autowalk combination?

Sometimes i just feel devs just want to ruin my experience on purpose...

Suggestions for new videos for my channel?

I've had my YouTube channel for almost a year now and I've slowly grown to a little over 50 subscribers and I've been thinking about making different kinds of videos but I'm not sure what I should post. So far I have videos such as Funny Moments and fails, guide videos (One so far), pvp highlights and kills, and base raiding.
