First Look: Shaka of the Zulu!

Whether you love the mountains or the beach, my civilization has something for you.

[Civ VI] idea - Upon creating a bank, you can purchase units/buildings at gpt for a set number of turns, an educational way to emulate credit.

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 06:56 AM PST

Creating a Bank in a Commercial District will allow that city to purchase a loan for gold per turn for a set number of turns. Only one contract may exist per bank and the Civ cannot purchase another loan until the previous payment is complete.

  • If the Civ is unable to afford the loan any longer, the Civ may be punished further than the typical penalties related to bankruptcy via loyalty, era score, etc.

Thoughts?

Additional mechanics: - The different Ages can change the interest rate - any others?

EDIT #continuous: u/afarteta93 (nice username), simplified the mechanic by purchasing a lump sum for gpt, rather than purchasing units/buildings for gpt. I've edited the initial post accordingly.

e.g. buy 30 gold now for 4gpt for 10 turns.

  1. Should the game allow you to purchase lump sums if it results in a player's negative gpt?

  2. Should the game allow or restrict the purchase of units/buildings if it results in a player's negative gpt?

  3. Should the mechanic be implemented earlier with Market?

  4. Could the mechanic be expanded with the Stock Exchange?

Before we meet new Shaka tomorrow, let us honour his memory with his great Civ V war theme!

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 01:47 AM PST

First Look of Zulu in CIV VI claims that Shaka was "one of military history's greatest commanders..." Is this statement true?

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 02:45 PM PST

I've heard different testaments to his military capabilities. Some say that they were exaggerated. Can someone who is more proficient in Zulu history confirm?

Shaka's Agenda:

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 01:35 PM PST

"Horn, Chest, Loins"

Tries to use as many corps and armies as possible and respects civilizations who follow his lead. Does not like civilizations who can't create corps or don't use them.

Civ VI leaders by chronological era, post R&F leader reveals

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:21 AM PST

With Shaka of the Zulu officially revealed, we now have all of our leaders for Civ VI thus far! I'm reprising this post, which I made before Scotland, Mapuche, and Zulu were revealed.

So here's the final list:

Ancient: Gilgamesh

Classical: Cyrus, Tomyris, Pericles, Gorgo, Cleopatra, Amanitore, Alexander, Chandragupta, Trajan, Qin Shi Huang

Medieval: Frederick Barbarossa, Harald Hardrada, Jadwiga, Hojo Tokimune, Gitarja, Jayavarman VII, Saladin, Seondeok, Genghis Khan, Tamar, Robert the Bruce

Renaissance: Montezuma, Philip II, Catherine de Medici, Mvemba a Nzinga, Lautaro

Industrial: Peter, Pedro II, Victoria, Poundmaker, Shaka

Modern: Teddy Roosevelt, Gandhi, John Curtin, Wilhelmina

We still have lots of Classical and Medieval leaders, so yeah.

Has Firaxis approached Google about using Alpha Zero to improve the AI?

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:53 AM PST

In December 2017, Google announced that their AI algorithm AlphaZero started with the plain rules of chess (no strategy) and then took "just four hours to learn the rules before obliterating the world champion chess program, Stockfish."

AlphaZero is "a new fully autonomous version of the AI – which only learns by playing itself, never facing humans." Since then, Google have further refined the algorithm so that it can be applied with a much more generalised streak that gives it a broader focus to problem solving."

Did anyone at Firaxis notice? Have Firaxis reached out to Google to see if it would be possible to input the basic rules of Civ6 into Alpha Zero, let it run through its permutations for a couple of days (acknowledging that Civ6 is much fuzzier game than chess) and then sit back and watch it obliterate every human player thereafter?

I imagine even fuzzy human-like stuff like trading and alliances could be facilitated given that permutations on resource value and risk/reward/relative strength issues could be evaluated with enough play throughs of the variables and outcomes.

An Idea for a shorter, Early-Mid game focused mode

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 04:18 AM PST

I think that I am not alone in enjoying the early and mid game more than the late game in Civ 6. Too often, a reason for that is the fact that the winner may have been decided and you're just waiting for that space project to finish, or those tourism numbers to increase. Often I find myself starting games, playing them for 150-200 turns, and then stopping without finishing them to play a new one. So I thought about a solution.

We have specific era start games. Why not have specific era end games? With the era revamp in RaF, this could make a lot of sense. For example, you could have an option to play until the end of the Rennaisance era. The victory conditions could be changed:

  • Domination: control X% of world capitals (e.g. 75%)
  • Religion: convert X% of other civs to your religion
  • Science: be the first to research X number of Industrial Era techs
  • Culture: not sure... any ideas?

What do you guys think? Could this work? Any ideas on what the victory conditions for a shorter game would be?

Post-R&F Civs

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 10:30 AM PST

So I was interested to see what the Civ list might look like after our next round of expansions and DLC, supposing we got a grand total of 50 civs, and if the devs were to aim for a more balanced approach (15 European Civs, 15 Asian/Oceanic Civs, 10 American Civs, and 10 African Civs). That means 5 new African civs, 5 new American civs, and 2 from Europe and Asia (or 3 from Asia, 1 from Europe, depending on how you count Georgia).

Here's my proposed list - what's yours?

  • Portugal
  • Ottomans
  • Babylon
  • Maori
  • Ghana
  • Ethiopia
  • Swahili/Kilwa
  • Carthage
  • Mali
  • Gran Columbia
  • Navajo
  • Lakota (or Iroquois)
  • Canada
  • Inca

Happy with the Zulu

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:08 AM PST

I'm not happy with Shaka's outfit, I preferred the armour and the headdress in Civ 5 (and why is the leopard skin so sickly yellow?).

In the flip side; I am pleasantly surprised by the Zulu abilities. I was originally unhappy that they picked the Zulu over a West African Civ and was thinking to myself 'what could the Zulu possibly add and how will I be able to like them?'. However, upon seeing their abilities I recind my previous judgement.

The are much different from 5 and I adore the bonuses to Corps and Armies as I often find myself never building them. Also I am glad to see that they are overal les overpowered compared with 5. I also would like to appreciate the colour choice and the excellent music, which gives the Cree a run for their money!
