Explaining Weapon Scaling in BotW Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:52 AM PST In my previous thread, I outlined the mechanics behind how the game scales up enemies over time. For those that did not see that thread, it's here The reason I've brought up the previous thread is because the same mechanics that determine when certain enemies receive upgrades are also used for gradual weapon upgrades, so it's a good idea to have a grasp on them before reading this. For those that would rather not bother with the hassle of reading that thread, to put it concisely, when certain enemies are killed, a hidden counter is incremented by a value based on whatever enemy was killed; once the counter crosses certain thresholds, enemies are upgraded. Moving on from that, I'm sure most people that have played BotW have noticed that some of the weapons they've picked up have certain modifiers. These modifiers come in two types, which I'll simply refer to as "blue" and "yellow." Blue modifiers will grant one of the following bonuses: Durability Up, Attack Up (weapons and bows only) (), Critical Hit (weapons only), Shield Guard Up (Shields only) () Yellow modifier bonuses include: Durability Up+, Attack Up+ (Weapons and Bows only), Long Throw (Weapons only), Quick Shot (Bows only), Five-Shot Burst (multi-shot bows only), and Shield Guard Up+ (Shields only) Yellow modifiers are meant to be superior to blue modifiers, and as such, become more and more common in comparison as the point total increases. There are some weapons that receive blue modifiers independently of the point value, though. Whether these specific weapons have the modifier or not when loaded in is seemingly random; although, if you've never picked up that type of weapon before (i.e. it's shown as ???), it will never load in with a modifier. Examples of these weapons include: a Traveler's Sword sitting in a Bokoblin camp beside Regencia River, near the Kaam Ya'tak shrine and the Thunder Rod held by the Wizzrobe circling Faron Tower. A subtler mechanic weapons have is the ability for some to upgrade to a better weapon once certain point thresholds are reached. For example, the Traveler's Sword that can be obtained from clearing the Bokoblin camp just north of the Great Plateau Tower can instead be a Soldier's Broadsword if the player has accumulated 201 to 383 points. To avoid any further clutter, rather than list every weapon's upgrade tree here, weapon transformations will be in bold on the list itself. Getting into the meat of things, weapons typically upgrade as such: No modifier-->blue modifier-->yellow modifier-->stronger variant (if applicable) There are a few exceptions to this, which are the three rods and their more powerful counterparts, the Swallow and Falcon Bow, and the Zora Spear and Silverscale Spear. The first two evolve as follows: No modifier-->blue modifier-->stronger variant-->yellow modifier (weaker variant)-->blue modifier (stronger variant)-->yellow modifier (stronger variant) The Zora and Silverscale Spears evolve in a way very unique to them: No modifier-->blue modifier-->yellow modifier (Zora Spear)-->blue modifier (silverscale)-->yellow modifier (Silverscale) What is especially interesting about this pair is that any Silverscale Spears able to receive upgrades will immediately revert to Zora Spears with yellow modifiers once the necessary total is reached, but there is no point during which a Zora Spear that can receive upgrades becomes a Silverscale Spear without any modifiers. All of these cases are likely a result of the weaker and stronger variants being fairly close in strength, which is a quality that has the most influence on when a weapon is upgraded, which leads us to the three factors that influence the how many points are required for any given upgrade to a weapon. The first, as mentioned, is strength, and it is directly tied to the second: weapon class. Because two-handed weapons and spears play very differently compared to the standard one-handed sword, with the former being slow but powerful and the other being weak but fast, their strength thresholds for upgrades differ. In a general sense, using one-handed swords, bows, and shields as a base, spears receive upgrades at the same time as the base if it's strength is around 0.5x that of the base while two-handed weapons must be around 1.5x the base to receive the same type of upgrade. For example, once 301 points are reached, all Soldier weapons besides the shield gain a yellow modifier; the spear has 7 (0.5x) strength, the broadsword and bow 14 (1x) strength, and the claymore 20 (1.43x) strength (not exact but very close). One last thing to note is that qualities such as multi-shot or elemental qualities are not taken into account in regards to the strength value, which results in a couple of very powerful bows gaining upgrades very early on in comparison to weapons of similar caliber. The third influence applies to weapons that can change into better weapons. I am not entirely sure how big an influence it is, but it would seem that weapons tend to change earlier or later depending on the strength of the better weapon. For instance, the Soldier's Shield becomes the Knight's Shield much later than the other Soldier tier weapons change, and the Knight's Shield has a much higher proportional strength than the other Knight tier weapons. Finally, some weapons just upgrade at very strange times, such as the Silver Shield gaining a yellow modifier much later than even the Gerudo Shield or Falcon Bow. The only explanation I can think of for these instances is that perhaps they had stronger variants initially planned but eventually scrapped without the point requirements being re-adjusted, but that's more or less completely baseless speculation. Now, not every specific instance of a weapon is chosen to receive these upgrades; otherwise, completing the Compendium would be an absolute nightmare. Instead, a weapon needs to meet a certain criteria in order to receive these upgrades. As long as a weapon satisfies one of these criteria, it will be able to receive upgrades (based on points accumulated): Located inside a chest (DLC dungeon seems to be an exception to this) Held by an enemy that can receive upgrades itself Hanging from a Hinox's necklace Inside a Stalnox Held by a Guardian Scout Lying near an enemy that can receive upgrades (basically, any weapon that isn't held but intended to be used by said enemy) Inside one of the three labyrinths Inside Hyrule Castle As usual, I have found an exception to this as it would seem some elemental Lizalfos varieties can have weapons that receive upgrades despite they themselves not being able to. These are seemingly limited to the Hebra Mountain, Gerudo Highlands, and around Death Mountain. There are a number of weapons that unfortunately do not meet this criteria but are not technically barred from receiving upgrades (there are simply no instances of them fitting the previous criteria), and these are: Tree Branch Vicious Sickle Demon Carver Lightning Rod Woodcutter's Axe Boat Oar Windcleaver Wooden Mop Farmer's Pitchfork Duplex Bow Wooden Bow Pot Lid Wooden Shield There are also some weapons that are specifically programmed to never be able to receive upgrades no matter the circumstance in which they are obtained; these include: Bokoblin Arm Lizalfos Arm Ancient Shortsword Spring-loaded Hammer Scimitar of the Seven Sages Master Sword Korok Leaf Moblin Arm Ancient Bladesaw Boulder Breaker Ancient Spear Ceremonial Trident Lightscale Trident Ancient Bow Great Eagle Bow Daybreaker Lastly, in Master Mode, all weapons in the added chest are automatically given yellow modifiers. With all that out of the way, it's finally time that I present what five months' research has yielded on this subject. Well, that's about everything I have to share. I apologize for any errors I may have made (and when putting together something as large as this, there are bound to be some), but I will fix any pointed out as soon as I can. Sorry about any formatting errors as well. As for what's next on my plate, I am looking to tackle the second DLC pack and see if there is anything in it related to the research I have done; I should be have a much easier time with that than this, so it'll probably be a nice reprieve from what has been a fairly taxing endeavor. I plan on possibly posting this in the other places I posted my original thread, but I want to see how it's received here and on the BotW Subreddit before I do so. (*) Yellow modifiers for the attack and shield guard up have a higher ceiling than blue modifiers. (**) Assumed due to Ice and Fire Rods upgrading at the same rate as there is no Thunder Rod to test for when it gets a blue modifier or for when it upgrades to a Thunderstorm Rod. [link] [comments]
| Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold. Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:20 AM PST Beat Breath of the Wild not too long ago have been searching for all of the shrines, happy to say I reached the halfway mark. .....But I made sure to return to Zora's Domain and settle a score with a certain Lynel and their Shock Arrows. Needless to say, it was fun to settle the score. I took took down a Silver Lynel before, and it was crazy how something so intimidating before became so simple. Happy New Years /r/Zelda! | Does anyone just... like all of the games? Posted: 01 Jan 2018 08:31 AM PST I guess it's just a thought I'm having this morning... But I always look at comment threads on the net and there's just a wide variety of opinion when rating the games. I've seen people hating OoT. I've seen someone say Zelda 2 is the best. I've seen BOTW is boring. Some people hate SS, some people love SS. Is there anyone out there who just simply likes all the Zelda games? (Personally, I do but I haven't played PH or TFH yet so they could be the first dislikes) [link] [comments] |

If BotW had Dungeons which unique items would you have wanted most? Posted: 01 Jan 2018 05:39 AM PST What-if Hypothetical Post: Trying to stay true to past Zelda games I tried to think of what items from past games would work well in BotW. If BotW had 7-9 dungeons like past games, these are the items I would have loved to see. Tried to think of what items would be most helpful while exploring the world and wanted to stay away from items that would help in battle. Bug-catcher's net: Collecting bugs is a simple task once you've upgraded your Sheikah set but I feel having a net to collect them would make the task more enjoyable. Also I would love to catch some bees to use on enemies. Slingshot: Possibly make it part of the Sheikah slate as a low damaging projectile weapon that doesn't break Hook-shot: A bit farfetched and would make climbing a joke. Possibly limit it's capabilities so you couldn't spam the hook shot but would be another fun way to get around. Magic cape: Quickly uses up stamina but makes Link invisible Fishing Rod: All I want is to quietly sit on the edge of a water bank and relax while catching a few fish. Pickaxe/megaton hammer: Not for battle. Used specifically to mine rocks for minerals like ruby, opal, diamond, ect. Silver/Gold Gauntlets: Would love to see Link have the ability to pick up large boulders and not just smaller rocks. [link] [comments]

Magical Sword vs. Master Sword Posted: 31 Dec 2017 07:10 PM PST I'm an OG Zelda fan from back in the day. Link in LOZ eventually earns the Magical Sword and continues wielding it in AOL. ALttP introduces the Master Sword and it has served as the most powerful sword in many of the other (chronologically earlier) entries. I also know that the NES games are the end of the downfall timeline, so perhaps something happened to the Master Sword after ALTTP and Link's Awakening. Maybe that's why Ganon is alive and free. I wonder if the gap in the lore will ever be explained? I've read somewhere that it is even speculated that the Magical Sword is the reforged Master Sword. I know there's no canonical explanation, but I welcome fan theories. Nintendo probably never dreamed LOZ would be as big of a hit as it was, much less become the cultural icon that it is, necessitating this intricate background lore. Plus Nintendo has basically started at the end of the timeline and is working backwards chronologically. Part of me would like remastered LOZ and AOL as part of a collection where the Master Sword replaces the Magical Sword. Of course, that isn't much better than George Lucas making changes to the Star Wars movies (Han short first!) year's after the fact. The Magical Sword on the cover of AOL is pretty blinged out and awesome (but looks nothing like the sword on the title screen).😲 [link] [comments]
Why do some people seem to think A Link Between Worlds is a remake of ALTTP? Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:16 AM PST I've seen some people on Reddit say that ALBW is a remake of A Link To The Past when I believe its supposed to be a sequel. [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:13 AM PST You know how we have pictures on the new nodes that appear that tell you how to find the new shrines? They are pictures of the actual world but seen from the sky. The are essentially maps of hyrule but an accurate reflection. I really want a real hyrule map [link] [comments]
Throwback Link to the Past question from Zelda novice! Posted: 01 Jan 2018 06:48 AM PST I'm not what you'd call a video game fanatic, but I really want to fall in love with the Zelda series! So, im starting with A Link To The Past (for the first time!) on the SNES Classic. Here's the problem - in the Eastern Palace (spoiler alert circa 1991), there's supposed to be a small key in one of the dark rooms under a pot. But, it's not there! I am driving myself mad trying to figure out if I have done something wrong... have re-entered the palace at least five times hoping it will be different, but no avail. Thought i would post here... am I doing something wrong?? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jan 2018 06:41 AM PST Happy New Year everyone! Stalfos, one of my favorite enemies in Zelda. Earlier, I thought of this cool item and then I thought of a Stalfos boss. Link uses the item and other items to defeat the boss. So, I hope you like it! --- STALMASTER --- The dungeon this boss dwells in is a desert dungeon. The item I made is the Throwing Spear. You can throw the spear for some longer ranged damage. When you throw the spear, you can press the same button to make it fly back into your hands. You can also do regular attacks with the spear, like the sword. The spear is longer than the sword, deals less damage, and attacks faster. You fight Stalmaster on a circular platform surrounded by sand. The room is also circular and has spikes on the walls were the sand is. Touching the sand will slowly pull you towards the spikes. You walk faster than the sand's pull. Anyways, Stalmaster is about the same size as Odolwa in MM, maybe smaller. Stalmaster wears armor all over him except for one chink on his back above his waist. Stalmaster wields a curved sword in each hand. He is pretty quick. He can run around the platform and jump away from you. He walks toward you and slashes with one sword, then the other, then jumps backwards. He can do a spin attack, where he makes his body form a T shape and spins around really quickly. He then charges forward and stops if he hits you. If he doesn't, he goes to the sand and bounces off the wall. He then bounces off the next wall he hits, then stops in the center of the platform. He is stunned for a moment, allowing you to go behind him and attack the chink in his armor. However, if you get too close to him, he will slash you with his sword. You must keep a distance from him and throw your spear at him. This will do a little damage to him. Another attack he can do is jump backwards then jump forwards with a downwards slash. If he misses the attack, he is vulnerable for the spear shot. Again, getting too close will result in a slash from Stalmaster's sword. If you hit him with the spear a total of 3 times, he will shift to his next phase. Part of his armor falls of and he will go to the sand, pull out a skeleton (creepy, right?), take its arms off, and attach them to his own body. He then throws the skeleton back in the sand. Stalmaster now has two pairs of arms. He throws his swords in the sand and a shield appears in his bottom left hand, and another shield appears in his bottom right hand. A boomerang appears in each of his top hands. The shields make up for the loss of some of his armor. If you try to throw a spear at Stalmaster, he will block it with his shields. He now tries to keep a little more distance between you and him, because he doesn't have a sword. He throws the boomerangs at you one at a time. You have to watch out for them because they can still damage you when they come back to Stalmaster. He can also dash forward with his shields. He stops when he gets to the edge of the platform. If he hits you it doesn't deal too much damage but it knocks you back a long distance into the sand. If you get too close to Stalmaster, he will throw both of his boomerangs at the same time. If you avoid them, he will try to block all of your attacks with his shields, while slowly walking backwards. Stalmaster can push his shields forward in an attempt to knock you back. Slash your sword at his shields. If you damage his shields enough, they will break. His front is open for attacks for a few moments, allowing you to attack it with your sword. After a few moments, his shields will appear again and he will jump away. Hit him with your sword 16 times and Stalmaster will move to his final phase. Most of his armor falls of. He will once again go to the sand and pick up another skeleton, take its arms, and attaches them to his body. A curved sword will appear in each of his bottom hands, a spear appears in each of his middle hands and a bomb is in each of his top hands. With Stalmaster's curved swords, he can do the same attacks he used in his first phase. He can also block attacks with his curved swords, because most of his armor is gone. He can do thrust attacks with his spears while he is attacking with his curved swords. He can also throw his spears. He has to jump to where they landed to pick them up. Stalmaster can throw his bombs which explode after 2 seconds after they touch the floor. The bombs are too heavy for you to pick them up, but you can move them by hitting them with your sword or spear. You must move a bomb to Stalmaster and it will explode and do damage. Stalmaster can also move the bombs with his spears and swords. Once a bomb he threw explodes, a new one appears in his hand. Hitting him with a bomb explosion 6 times defeats him. A cutscene plays when you defeat him. He throws a bomb, but it is too far away from you to hurt you. Stalmaster's bones fall in a pile and a wave of sand piles over him and pulls his bones into the sand. The bomb explodes and the heart container spawns in the center of it. --- I hope all of you like this boss! I think Stalfos are the coolest enemies and can be pretty challenging. [link] [comments]
A question about lore in and canon in the series... Posted: 31 Dec 2017 03:30 PM PST I watched a buddy play OOT a bunch when that was the game, but didn't really play it much. BOTW is my first. I have a workin SNES, so if I find a cheap copy of Link to the past I'll jump on that. I may actually just go back and play all of them. My question: is there a lore or canon summary video floating around out there? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jan 2018 02:50 AM PST So. I found a lynel I killed it,my problem is that I need horns and what not to upgrade the barbarian set but I can't find any lynels and I've been almost everywhere. I only know of the one by zora's domain on the mountain. For some reason I haven't found anything about lynel locations just stuff about how to kill the master mode plateau lynel. Any ideas where to look? [link] [comments]
