Before I start, I do wanna actually address why I'm so inconsistent with these on Wednesdays now, if anyone actually cares. The short version is just I've noticed how little interaction these posts get now and it's nobody's fault really. Long standing thread and all, spammed every week, it's bound to get a bit stale after a while. So from this point forward, I'll be posting it biweekly (hopefully) as I feel this is a better solution than stopping altogether. If you have any thoughts or comments on the change, lemme know via DM, but for now...

GameTyrant is looking for an Esports writer just for Smash

Hey guys Zeb from GameTyrant here, as the title says we are looking for a dedicated writer who can help us keep up to date on the news happening in the Smash world. We are starting an eSports section of our news website gametyrant.com which reaches about 1.3M people per year, and a little over 100k per month. We basically want to elaborate on our own efforts to help the smash community, and reporting news is one of the smaller steps we are taking to help that out. While we have many writers on the team already none of them have the time, nor the knowledge of the Smash competitive community, so we are branching out. The only requirements we really have is that you can write a minimum of 200 words per article, and be willing to adjust your writing to better fit the SEO of our website and it's growth. If you are interested you can comment below, OR the best thing to do would be to private message me :) We do have a pay system in place for those who want to jump on board, it just depends on how much you write. 5 Players To Look Out for in Genesis 5 That You May Not Have Heard Of!

Genesis 5 is just around the corner to kick off the start of 2018's ranking season. Being one of the few super majors of the year, it has naturally attracted all sorts of talent from around the world, many of whom are part of the newly made SSBMRank 2018. However, it has also attracted many newer faces attempting to make a name for themselves. Here are five players looking to make a splash this weekend that you may not have heard of! All of these players will be appearing in their first ever Genesis; in fact, all of these players rarely show up at major tournaments at all!

 

TheRealThing

Region: Ohio, USA

Character: (Falco)

TheRealThing has actually been around for a couple of years, but it wasn't until around the 2016-2017 period when he began to become a consistent high level threat in the Midwest scene. Some of the names he has beaten during the year of 2017 include hidden bosses AmbiguouslyPolish and Milhous (whom you may recognize as the current number 3 on netplay rankings). Hailing from Ohio, he has also taken several sets off of 4%, Drephen, and Cal.

Currently #1 on the Northeastern Ohio PR, TheRealThing will be attending his first modern Genesis tournament this weekend. In he wants to make it into bracket, he'll have to face MikeHaze into Ginger to make it out of winners or Vinodh and Zhu/Medz to make it out in losers. TRT is one of the many players who has not been blessed with strong exposure due to his region, but nevertheless he has become into an incredibly strong player who has a small chance of making it through his spacie-heavy bracket with his Falco.

 

John Wick

Region: Arizona, USA

Character: (Marth)

This may be the first and last time you hear about the Arizona rising star, John Wick. With a tag like that, it may be hard to take this player seriously as a threat. However, John Wick is not a player that can be underestimated; he is ranked fifth in Arizona, only behind other (ex) SSBMRanked talent such as Axe, Medz, Taj, and Tai, and at the recent Arizona tournament Smash Camp, he managed to beat Tai and Squid to earn third place.

Unfortunately, John Wick only managed to snag a lower seed at Genesis 5 with the little amount of opportunities he's had. Just to make it out of winners in pools, he'll have to face silentspectre. If he manages to beat SS, he'll inevitably lose to S2J in R2 pools; there, he'll have to face Lanceinthepants, Silent Wolf, into Laudandus. If he loses to SS, he'll face Son2, Phil, Rustin, and Darkatma. It's very likely that he will drop before he will even make it into bracket. But there's also a slim chance that he could make it out; John Wick is on the come up with a great improvement curve, and this could very well be his best chance to gain recognition at his first Genesis at the start of 2018.

 

Sillie Willie

Region: MD/VA (Virginia), USA

Character: (Falco)

2017 was an explosive year for MD/VA. It showed just how much talent bubbled beneath the surface of the East Coast region. Of course, it isn't just Zain and Junebug among the pool of players within their state, Sillie Willie is another high level threat that hasn't yet had the opportunity to show his skills to the world. Within region, he has taken sets off of Zain, Rishi, and lloD during the 2017 season, and at Smash Con he took out Nightmare. He is currently ranked 9th in MD/VA under Aglet, Juicebox, and the usual MD/VA top talent.

G5 will also be Sillie Willie's Genesis debut. He'll be facing HugS immediately in R2 Pools. As funny it would be to have another MD/VA star rise against HugS, he'll likely be sent to losers. There, he'll have to face TheSWOOPER/Glitch, Spud/Luigigoshard, and Cactuar/Moky to make it out to bracket. Once again, this is not an easy bracket, especially with the known lack of Samus' within his home region. However, Sillie Willie is a player that has constantly betrayed expectations even within a region as dangerous and volatile as MD/VA. Genesis 5 might feature the same magic.

 

Franz

Region: SoCal, USA

Character: (Doctor Mario)

It may not be outrageous to claim that Franz might currently be the best Doctor Marios in the world. Even if this isn't true, Franz is still certainly among the most talented to have touched the character in recent years. On top of that, Franz is less than 18 years old, being apart of the new wave of young smashers making waves in the scene. Thus, on a superficial level there may be more than a couple of reasons not to consider Franz as a serious threat, but anyone from SoCal would tell you otherwise; he has accrued wins on ARMY and Lucky as well as multiple sets off Squid and was even close to taking a set off of SFAT at a recent local.

Ranked 16 in SoCal playing Doc, Franz will be facing off against PPU in his R2 Pool. If he loses, then he'll have to face Sanne, Ryobeat, and FatGoku to make it out in losers; a hard, but not impossible bracket.There's a non-zero chance that you may in fact see a Doctor Mario in the Top 64!

 

Plata

Region: Tokyo, Japan

Character: (Yoshi)

What? A Yoshi from Japan not named aMSa? Yes you heard that right, there's another talented Yoshi that resides in Japan, and this will mark not only his first Genesis, but his first US appearance! Plata has managed to find success in a region filled with Yoshi killers, and while he hasn't quite reached the level of aMSa, he has taken sets off of s-royal, shuta, and Kounotori. In addition, he also took a set off of Darkatma when he traveled to Japan.

At Genesis 5, he'll face Webwipe in R1 pools and then immediately Shroomed in R2 Pools. If he loses to Shroomed, he'll have to fight Tang, Ralph, and Medz to make it into bracket. Ralph and Medz might prove to be tough challenges as they have decent Yoshi experience, having played against their respective local Yoshis, Widlar and V3ctorman. Of course, we'll have to factor in that this is Plata's first international appearance, and it's possible Plata could underperform and lose in pools. However, it's also possible Plata could shock and win the hearts of everyone like a certain red Yoshi did four years ago.

as the miom top 100 has been finalised i have looked through all resources such as Smashpedia (which needs an update for its Project M section)/Youtube/Challonge/smash.gg to look at the top 100 and see how many of them play Project M/sm4sh. disclaimer i am being leniant since a portion of these players only played in a few tourneys and Evo/smashcon make up a significant portion of that, also i dont know if the smashers play PM/sm4sh at there locals which are not fully documented so if i miss any out please do tell me, also if anyone wants to copy this data and make a infinitely better formatted version of this post go ahead. firstly i made a list of players who played PM in 2016 but cannot find any evidence in 2017. YouTube just announced that they will be removing partnership from any channel with less than 1000 subs and less than 4000 hours watched.

I assume many of your local streamers are like us at Pushblockgaming in Indiana where we have about 500 subs and are roughly 700 hours short of the requirement.

If you haven't already, remember to subscribe to your local streamer and help them and yourself by going back and watching your own matches to learn from them.

A lot of us (Smash 4) post to ssbworld as well so if you watch some videos over there you should subscribe to the channels you're watching.
