Nobody messes with Skittles

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 09:05 PM PST

I decided to try an extreme arctic colony (sliding the temp down to coldest and settling the most far north I could find) with temps in the -100F range during the winter, causing what I like to call Ultra-winter. Survival was hard won by the brave group, and their cat mascot, Skittles. A recent tribal raid during the 'warm' period -where the temp wasn't negative- they had captured a sort-of okay colonist who could actually grow Healroot. As the greenhouse was up and running with hydroponics they decided they could spare the nutrient paste for a mouth to feed on the off chance he could grow medicine on this heated oasis. Halfway through the quandrum a colonist leaves the prison door open. The prisoner foolishly takes this chance to escape into the wastes. Unfortunately for him, Skittles was nearby. We don't know what prompted him to take out his rage on the colony mascot, but by the time he had been subdued Skittles had suffered a broken tail and front right paw. The colonists agreed, he was guilty. They released him into the wastes naked and freezing, if he made it then he would have earned the right to live. He made it father than anyone would have guessed before succumbing to the elements. His body was recovered and butchered, as his friends. His leathers used to make a good bed for Skittles to recover from his injuries, and his meat used to nourish Skittles for the coming cold.

Nobody fucks with Skittles.

Lucky strike! Mana from the heavens!

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 03:05 PM PST

So after completing the game in an easy biome (temperate forest) I decided to try something harder - like the ice sheet. So after a couple of failed attempts, I've finally got a small settlement going ... just ...

The story behind this image: https://imgur.com/a/WLMo0

The colonists are dug into mountainous ice sheet - clinging to survival. They are low on food, clothing and other essentials and it's far too far from other settlements to make a caravan trip for supplies.

Then in a rollercoaster of emotions - the colonists hear of an incoming trade caravan - we're saved! ... except it's an exotic goods trader ... nooooo! We need the basics, not exotics ...

Then a loud boom if heard from the heavens and a meteorite slams into the ground ... right on top of the trade caravan!

Critically wounded, they try to wave for help from the settlement. But no help is forthcoming. The colonists peer out from the warmth of their single room building ... waiting ... watching ... as the traders bleed out on the frozen ice sheet.

Then it's party time! We're saved! A fruitful bounty of clothing, food ... and hats!

The RNG Gods have finally given their blessing!

Man this game can go from zero to ten real fast...

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 03:49 PM PST

So I started complaining that nothing was happening, the game was getting a little boring... so Randy was "o rly?"

So I was preparing for winter, casually building up a wall around my sun lamp so that I could keep growing, as well as walling in the hallway for all the rooms so that I could put heaters in there during winter, and vent into the rest of the rooms...

Then a cold snap hits. Well fuck, there goes all my crops. On top of that I have no warm clothes, and my tailor is shirtless. Not to mention my cotton plants just died, and all I got is random bits of leather here and there that's not enough for one whole piece of warm clothing. Ok, we can fix this, I wake up my builder in the middle of the night and work them to the bone to get these hallways and heaters up and running. I get it done quick, ok things aren't looking so bad...

Two megaspiders and a spelopede have decided to wander out of their home and just hang out next to my base... I'm guessing their AI reacted to the cold or something? I don't have turrets yet, and I've neglected traps...

So now I've got my one good shooter kiting these damn bugs around, barely able to hit them because the hypothermia is putting off his aim, and I have to constantly watch my other colonists, because I only managed the bare minimum of hallway to get heating going, and they still have to walk outside to get to the freezer...

Man that escalated quickly... On the plus side heating is done, so that's one less thing to worry about when the actual winter comes. Also three tame huskies wandered in, so that's a thing.

Does anybody else find that the vanometric cells are perfect for a drilling operation?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 10:58 PM PST

Just move one wherever you're setting up a drill or two and once it's done, move it to the next location. I always make sure to have a comfy chair at each drill, too.

Bed quality science

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:58 PM PST

I decided to test the effect of the rest effectiveness on beds, because I always waste a ton of resources trying to make better furniture.

Quality 5h rest Full rest*
Awful 42% ~9h
Shoddy 45% ~8h
Poor 47% ~8h
Normal 50% ~8h
Good 52% ~7-8h
Superior 55% ~7h
Excellent 56% ~7h
Masterwork 60% ~6h
Legendary 62% ~6h

*Full rest from 25-30%, before getting "tired".

Oddly the superior and excellent results are very similar.

Accuracy should be a bit off by fractions.
