This is the forbidden fruit of gaming

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 05:49 PM PST

So I am now at twice this many hours, but I will share one of my favorite playthroughs so far. After about 60 hours of dying immediately. I finally had an amazing colony running. Well amazing by my standards. 9 people in total and we were finally self sufficient and were impenetrable against anything. Or so I thought. I started off from the tribal era and had many technologies now researched. When suddenly, I am under siege.

I've never seen this before, but assumed it was just another raid where they will prepare for a while. But it will be longer and bigger this time. No problem I thought. Mortar shells come flying in. Oh well, my buildings are made of stone it'll be okay. Second one hits my stockpile. My floors are wooden and everything goes up in flames as well as downing a colonist. I send in another to go rescue her and he is cooked from the flames as well. So now everyone is sent in to try to put out the flames, rescue the colonists, and bring the food into a nearby cave so we don't starve once this is over. Next mortar hits my power sources. All conduits were connected here and I had no backups. Third mortar hits my houses where I had sick colonists resting. Two of them are engulfed in flames and a third dies trying to rescue them. My prisoners are locked in their cells and are roasted. Flames never touch them but they die from heatstroke as they desperately try to get out. At this point everything is on fire and only 3 people are able to walk. Mila, Jones and Schlitzer.

Everyone else is either dead or badly burned. The 3 remaining drag the injured into a nearby cave and did their best to patch them up. But our doctor was dead and medicine burned. They sit inside and watch in horror as everything goes up in flames while constantly shelled. As the injured slowly died of their wounds, Mila's husband died in front of her causing her to completely lose her mind and begin attacking Jones and Schlitzer. They had no choice but to shoot her. Now the invaders finally decide to make their attack and begin rushing into the cave while Jones and Schlitzer desperately fight them off. Somehow, they did and the invaders fled. But not before Jones was shot dead.

Schlitzer came out of the cave and looked at the catastrophe. Everything he had helped build since the time they were just hunter gatherers was now destroyed. The dead bodies of his friends littered the floor. Schlitzer lost his mind and wandered the ruins in sadness until he collapsed from exhaustion. And was promptly eaten by a Warg.

Tynan I hate you. I have not been able to stop playing rimworld. I had so many goals in my life and now I am perfectly content. It's honestly destroying my life. I haven't been to the gym in weeks, some days I forget to eat. I stopped going to bars and hanging out with my friends, stopped studying, pursuing women. I've even skipped out on a concert to play. I haven't taken a vacation in 2 years but I took off work to play this. And I don't even play games. I had to install steam just to play. You have put me into a downward spiral and I hate you. Back when I was a regular smokeleaf and yayo user I did not feel so addicted to something. This is the forbidden fruit of gaming.

Operating heavy mining equipment is fine, but don't you dare try to walk while I'm sleeping!

I think it's a little overlooked but Rimworld has amazing...

Sound design! From hearing gunshots echoing across the map to hearing my little baby elephant make a high pitched trumpet adorably appropriate for it's size. This game is a delight to listen to and really helps bring the world to life.

I also love the constant sound of air wooshing by when you are fully zoomed out

How can I keep my pets out of my cocaine?

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 12:46 AM PST

I'm thinking of turning Adamistan into a narco colony, but we've had a spotty history with nose candy.

At one point we had a fucking armada of labs that would never stop multiplying. In the end, we ended up slaughtering them for food in the winter and because of drug concerns.

We had gotten ahold of cocaine from this dude that attacked us out of a cryosleep basket. The "ancient danger" room was near the border of the colony so I went ahead and made it a storage room for anything that doesn't go in our other storage rooms.

This meant leaving the cocaine in a large open room which would constantly be entered by colonists, who each were followed by their guard dogs.

The thought that this wasn't a good idea never crossed my head until we had a litter of puppies one day.

One of the puppies got in our storage room and proceeded to snort cocaine until it fucking died. Even after I forbade it he just wouldn't stop. Nothing I did could fucking stop it.

In hindsight it's probably a good thing that the puppy died since it's a mouth that needs to be fed being replaced by a freshly butchered dog, but it's still a sign of a potential issue I could run into. Any ways I can avoid this incident in the future?

Also while we're talking about animals doing drugs I wanna mention that I had one of my polar bears smoke a 5g blunt when he was recovering from a infection earlier. I laughed so hard I got a headache.

I think I've found an explanation to why colonists wouldn't try paying orbital trade ships to leave.

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 11:34 AM PST

I always had a feeling that those orbital ships are kind of fishy.

We occasionally come across some slaves we can purchase from orbital ships.

Maybe they are the ones who tried.

In this subreddit, what Rimworld mods are a given?

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 12:09 AM PST

I mean, what are the mods everyone knows about and expects you to have in your game? Any super popular ones? Any ones that even new players benefit from?

The Soldiers' find a firey maiden [story]

Posted: 13 Jan 2018 01:53 AM PST

Having just escaped with their lives from their crippled spaceship Pepper, Boyd and Burton crash-landed on a desolate planet. The area was arid, minimal trees, no resources to mine and little wildlife to hunt.

They made do, their limited combat engineering skills eeked out a small wooden hut where they could lay their head and attempt to escape the desert heat. A couple of reckless souls attempted to raid their humble camp, this proved unwise for the villains, as Pepper, Boyd and Burton were crack shots.

The soldiers realised that to prosper they needed people with skills beyond shooting, so gave up their beds and applied what first aid they could to their former combatants in an attempt to win them over.

Four prisoners suffering horrendous combat wounds stained the wooden floors of their ramshackle huts, but Pepper refused to give up on them. He'd seen worse in combat and was sure he could save them. Using up what little medical supplies they had Pepper brought the prisoners back from the brink of death.

However, with social skills of trained monkeys, the soldiers struggled to win over their victims to their side. It seemed hopeless. Even though Pepper had staved their lives, the prisoners clearly would rather die than join the soldiers' hopeless attempt at survival.

After two unsuccessful escapes, it seemed that all would be lost, but then hope! A damsel in distressed called out from the sands for saviours; she found three! The sight of a naked, 23-year-old, beautiful artist streaking away from 3 knife-wielding savages sent the boys into sexually charged action, taking down 2 and capturing the third as a prisoner to add to their growing captive population.

Telling Gooey they had no clothes for her naked body, wasn't a lie, but it was unfair on the poor lass, who seemingly jumped out of the fire and into the frying pan of 3 horny, brutish soldiers intent on subjecting her.

Her naked beauty might have worked on the soldiers, who couldn't think much further than their dicks, but her charms could not turn the convicts. They repeatedly tried to escape only for Pepper to show his skill patching them up and returning them to their cell.

Finally, Burton, the oldest but hardly the wisest of the bunch made the call to execute them all. He went in and slit their throats one by one as they slept, with no emotion.

It was hard to tell if Gooey was relieved at not having to tend to demented prisoners or fearful of the remorselessness Burton showed in their executions. Either way, there was no escape for her.

But the horror just had begun for her. Alone, naked, fearful of her brutish 'friends' in an oven that barely dropped below 40 degrees she began to crack. First, the soldiers just thought it was the heat, and they laughed at her as she wandered around naked rambling about the hopelessness of the situation. However she didn't seem to snap out of it, not that they cared, they too had begun to snap, not helped by the stash of narcotics they pillaged from a down space capsule.

The floor covered with vomit and a mixture of blood from a dozen different people and animals, with nothing to eat it seemed like the was the stir-crazy end. It should have been, 4 raiders came out of the desert, what they thought they could steal from this hopeless camp of desperation is anyone's guess. The soldiers, reminiscent of that centuries old classic war film Apoocolpyse Now, took up their arms aiming both through their scopes and their drug riddles haze at the heavy-armed raiders. Through a combination of residual skill, poor raider tactics, fortunate pet intervention and god-given luck all three raiders lie dead. This time they weren't taking prisoners.

While increasing their skillset (and communication abilities) was the only thing that could save this collection of brutes with their maiden companion it was as if they had given up - just wanting one last bloodlust hurrah. With the bodies of the dead lying where they fell in the hallway, everyone partook in the last of the hard drugs. This was as good as it gets.

It was. The next day, they awake to another blistering 50-degree day. Rotting corpses. Dead animal companions. The smell of death inescapable. The worst thing. The realisation hit, no drugs, no food, no respite from this unrelenting heat.

Pepper cracked first, picking up his rifle and destroying his room, followed by the common room. Noone tried to stop him. They understood him.

Gooey, malnourished, suffering withdrawals, covered in blood, but still naked withdrew away from the soldiers'. She couldn't handle their lack of communication causing their feeling of frustration to be bourne out in violence. She was thankful they didn't turn on her, but she didn't take any chances, locking the door to her artists room as she worked on her final pieces, something she hoped one day an explorer may find. Her first work told the tale of the brave Yorkshire terrier, who faced with automated pistol fire lept to the defence of his undeserved owner, paying for his bravery with his life. The second, and final piece was a ground filled with the spilled organs of the dead, a grizzly insight into the torment her 'saviours' has rescued her into.

With the door locked, Gooey took the zippo lighter which has been her distant ancestor's and with a little artists glue set fire to the tinder-dry encampment. As the fire took hold, she became the first victim, succumbing to the heat of the raging fire. By the time the soldiers could get through to the flames it was too late. Burton bravely tried to extinguish the flames, but the others were too forlorn to care. Many times they'd fought in firefights, convinced they were about to be drawn into the fiery depths of hell but had come through. Not this time. The flames tore through the building enveloping them all, leaving nothing but ashes - and two stone statues depicting the horrors that occured here.

How to deal with Centipedes?

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 11:55 PM PST

Damn they are so tanky. They usually spawn more than scythers and have more health point almost 10 times, and they also do bunch of splash damage. They are like howitzers with plasteel plate all over their body. My last raid was really hurts. Half of my dogs are dead because of inferno cannon. My killbox seems worthless against their attack.
