Finally killed the dragon in 1.12 UHC and boy is it tougher than last time I did it...

Posted: 19 Jan 2018 03:07 AM PST

So I found myself with a few days off work and having just done it in my newish SSP world, I thought I'd have a go at the dragon in UHC mode - no natural health regen, difficulty locked to hard and perma-death.

I've done it before (circa 1.8) and to be honest, it was pretty easy. This time tho... wow. I think this was my 5th attempt, one of which died while falling from my pigman farm to the nether roof - totally my own fault for getting cocky.

So why so much harder? Skellies are insane nowadays and even in full iron armor, they'll still rip a few hearts off you in seconds. So how do you get those hearts back? Golden Apples? Nah, potions are where it's at. But that requires blaze rods and hat's off to whoever made the blaze changes because they are now truly terrifying. Targeting you from practically render distance and agro-ing all it's lil yellow buddies. Fireballs fill the air... Terrifying, but great fun!

So, I've survived the nether and have health a plenty thanks to the ease of melon farming \ saving gold. Now for the fun part - ender pearls. I use the ole 'find a big flat desert' technique but night-time in a desert is seriously no joke nowadays. The skellies I've now aptly renamed the White Death, zombies spawn constant pre-agro'd backup, husks spawn more zombie backup, more zombies = more baby zombies and I wince at every crunch of sand expecting a big green game over... And somehow I'm supposed to pull enderman into all this too??? Pandemonium, but a proper blast.

The dragon fight is no more difficult than before, providing you know what you're doing. Unfortunately, the technique I use involves enchanting feather falling (no biggie) and using ender pearls to get to the cages - faster = less chance of damage. But those extra pearls were brutal in the desert.

I remember feeling once that this game, even in UHC, had no real challenge to it - just grind. It certainly has some now and it's a welcome change of pace.

TLDR: Skellies, Zombie backup and blaze buffs make killing the dragon in UHC waaaay more challenging. And that's a good thing.

edit: a word

Does anybody else do this for their younger kids that play with them?? (cool idea inside.)

Posted: 19 Jan 2018 05:59 PM PST

So I have a 5 year old that is absolutely amazed by this game and after maybe half a year we've exhausted most of fun things there is to do that's outside of going into straight crafting in creative mode. First thing I'll mention (just so we avoid any sort unnecessary questions regarding parenting) is that we only play once or twice a week since I work full time and it's only an hour or less of screen time when we do.

Now that THATS out of the way heres a cool concept I've come up with.

During the nights that I play after work I've been building interesting sights for us to explore and I've been acting as if they were built by the game to create the illusion that Minecraft has much more to offer in survival mode while exploring.

example 1: One of our current "houses" that we've built is deep in the jungle on a small island in the middle of a small lake. There are several rivers branching off this lake in a few different directions.

What I did for this idea was extend one of the rivers over a fairly long distance with all sorts of windy turns (I used the geography of the land itself.) and at the end I built my own version of a Jungle temple that extends into a steep hillside. There's a path inside with traps and what not and down a long hallway theres a 50 foot drop into a pool of water. At the bottom is another long hall with a treasure room at the end.

Needless to say after getting into a boat and following the river, discovering the temple, and ultimately completing it she was in awe. She absolutely loves discovering new things like that!

Example 2: I revamped my own witch hut with some inspiration from the in game igloos. Both of these Minecraft generated structures are extremely rare so I found a large swamp and created my witch hut for her to discover complete with a dispenser that launches out witches when she enters. There are also "kidnapped" villagers caged up along with a chest of potions and other trinkets. I'll secretly point her in the direction to explore this in a couple days if we end up getting bored of our typical minecraft shenanigans.

Sorry for such a long post but I was curious if anybody else does things like this? I love seeing the look on my little ones face when she "stumbles" upon these man made locations and she's always none the wiser (for now.) Not only that but It's helped extend the QoL for myself. As a console player we're left with few ways to do so since we don't have the ability to mod.

A couple more examples along with things I've planned for the future. Bear dens, underground rivers, evoker sacrifice/summoning stones, Tree top village, Haunted Graveyard, Wild hedge maze, Sunkin' ships etc.

Thanks for reading!

pro tip for long distance travel

Posted: 19 Jan 2018 02:20 PM PST

use ice boat highways! itll take a while to grab all the packed ice, and will def take time to build them. but the speed at which youll travel is certainly worth it.

for those wondering, boats go zoomimg on ice, makes for nice paths

also make sure you have guard rails

No passive mobs spawning on a Survival Island? (Solved)

Posted: 19 Jan 2018 04:44 PM PST

I started an SSP world on a lone island with natural health regen disabled, for a challenge.

Unfortunately, no passive mobs had generated on the island.

I traveled to all the islands within 240 blocks and removed all the animals and grass blocks, to ensure the passive mob cap wasn't full. I also stacked several more well-lit grass spawning floors on my island-- still nothing spawning.

Reading the wiki I found, "There must be no players and no player spawn points within a 24 block distance (spherical) of the spawning block"

Thought this was odd because I had never set my spawn with a bed, and I had been AFKing >24 blocks from the island hoping for spawns.

So, I crafted a bed, and slept in my AFK spot so my spawn point was specifically away from the island.

Still nothing.

Finally I had the idea to move the world spawn away from the island. Lo and behold, within minutes the island was populated with animals.

Just thought I'd share this because I believe it is a recently implemented spawn requirement, and the wiki didn't mention the world spawn.

This problem would apply to any survival island that existed within a 24 block radius of the world spawn. so... be advised!

My daughter loves minecraft and I wan't to share that with her. I have a few questions if anyone is willing to help

Posted: 19 Jan 2018 01:30 PM PST

I recently got her a laptop to play on and we've been playing a little together. She loves DanTDM and he plays a lot of custom maps/adventure maps and I'd like to figure out how to do those with her too. She says she likes the scary maps if anyone can suggest any.

Also, is there a guide anywhere to addons? I've seen some clips here before of people that have different minimaps and stuff that looked cool.

I don't want to seem like I'm not willing to put in the work to look into it myself but I know versions are always changing and I've run into problems with other things because the info I'm checking out isn't up to date etc.

Thanks ~
