Ever wondered how common different weapons are among HotS' heroes?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 03:41 PM PST

...because I'm bored and avoiding actual work, I present you, an analysis of the various weapons used by the equally various heroes.

Melee Weapons

  • Eight heroes use swords. Of those, one dual-wields them, one can dual-wield them, and one throws them.
  • Seven heroes use axes or similar. Of those, two use cleavers, and two dual wield and throw theirs. Two heroes can replace their sword(s) with an axe or two in certain skins, while one replaces their axe with a(nother) hammer.
  • Five heroes use hammers, while a sixth may choose to use one. Of those, one dual-wields them in some skins, another only uses it to cast magic, and the sixth guy can magic with it, too.
  • Three heroes carry shields, and a fourth may choose to use one. Only two of those heroes use the shields to attack, and neither as the only weapon. [edit] And one more uses a buckler, offensively even!
  • Three heroes use sickle-type weaponry, all dual-wielding or using alongside an axe. Cleaver, specifically.
  • Three heroes carry daggers, though one doesn't use theirs, while another dual-wields theirs, so it averages out.
  • Two heroes wield spears, both using them as thrown weapons.
  • One hero uses a fist weapon, with another using a pair in every single alternate skin.
  • One hero uses glaives. Er. Warglaives? The name has been used to describe literally anything.
  • One hero uses a mace.
  • One hero uses a flail, which is kind of a mace if you think about it.
  • One hero uses a scythe.
  • One hero hits enemies with a stick. Staff!
  • Finally, one hero uses a fish. Slap!

Ranged Weapons

  • Ten heroes use firearms of some description. This further breaks down to three rifles, three pistols of various types, a grenade launcher, a fusion cannon, a minigun, and a weird sound projector thingamabob.
  • Three heroes use bows.
  • One hero uses crossbows, and a second can trade their rifle for one in a skin.
  • One hero throws shuriken. Lots of shuriken.
  • One hero uses a slingshot, to surprising effect.

Mumbo Jumbo

  • Sixteen heroes use magical missiles for basic attacks, plus a seventeenth who doesn't have a basic attack but, eh, close enough. Of those:
  • Nine use just their hands, ten if you count the seventeenth. This includes one that now uses a beam but it still comes from his hand (and it's not magic but, eh, close enough).
  • Two use the staves they carry to attack with. A further two also carry staves but cast from their other hand.
  • One uses a wand.
  • One uses a hammer.
  • One uses weird magical whip thingies.
  • One uses a... severed head. Ew.
  • One uses a... oh. Magic spittle. Ew.
  • Moving on! Three heroes uses magical psi-blades.

Technically Unarmed

  • Six heroes use their bare claws.
  • Four heroes use various weapons built into their armor or chassis.
  • Three heroes use their bare hands. Of those, one can switch to a hammer, one also uses their feet but switches to fist weapons in every skin, and one has great memetic value.
  • Two heroes use weapons mounted on their back. Of.. various descriptions.
  • One hero uses their belly. Wait, what?
  • One hero spits.. spits? Seriously? That's it, I'm done.

It's Actually Embarassing that HotS Still Doesn't Have it's Own API This Far into Development

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 08:46 AM PST

I was trying to get a friend to try out the game, and when he asked me if there were any websites like op.gg or lolking.net for league of legends, all I had to tell him was Hotslogs. I've played many mobas, and heroes of the storm is the only one that doesn't have an API. Hell, even Overwatch has an API.

If you select a Hero that is already picked/banned, you need to get penalized, NOT be given a random hero instead

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 10:50 AM PST

He wanted Lucio, then went to the bathroom. Lucio was then banned 30 seconds later. He was then randomly assigned Abathur. Our last pick then had to choose between having a team with either a tank or a support

We lost the game

Should I download hots?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 02:33 PM PST

Hey, hots community. LoL player here. Me and my friends are tired of only playing LoL, and we have decided to try to give hots a chance. We're thinking of installing it. Is it worth it? Is it a good moba? If so, do you have some beginner tips and/or some links to guides? Thank you!

What if Gargantuan had less HP but bonus HP based on Nazeebo's maximun health?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:59 AM PST

Title, basically a low interaction between Nazeebo's trait and his Gargantuan, rewarding those player who are good at stacking even in rotation. Was thinking about that synergy between some skills and hero stats and that one sounds actually pretty fun!

P.d: I miss the old Gargantuan when it used to pick minions as a weapon :(

What if some objectives were only available for a limited time?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 05:14 PM PST

I'm not talking about the Dragon Knight or the Garden Terror expiring after ~75 seconds. I'm talking about objective windows closing if no one gets them.

What if the night time on Garden of Terror lasted 3 minutes, regardless of getting the seeds? What if the Haunted Mines closed after 3 minutes, and released golems for the skulls you have (i.e. 20 skull golem vs 12 skull golem). What if Braxis just released whatever Zerg were built up after 2 minutes? What if Blackheart and the Spider Queen sacs were only available some of the time?

Maybe it could force some long early game skirmishes to come to an end, like on Braxis on Dragon Shire. Maybe some objectives will be valued more because they won't sit and wait for a team forever.

I'll admit this idea is half-baked and probably won't work for reasons I didn't think about. It came to me after seeing whole games on Haunted Mines end without a single golem, or fighting on the first Braxis beacons lasting until level 10.

The new stealth is great, but Samuro got shafted when it comes to the standing still for true invisibility mechanic

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 12:08 PM PST

All of the other stealth heroes get to use this cool new mechanic, where if they stand still in stealth for 1.5 secs they turn fully invisible. It's nice because it allows you to wait in ambush, and works really well on the other heroes who have no time limit on their invisibility, but it doesn't make any sense on Samuro because his windwalk just expires and he is popped out of stealth completely. Shouldn't it pause the timer? This would actually bring back a huge part of Sam's kit too, which is the idea of triggering your abilities well before you think you'll want to use them so the cooldown runs.

Gamebreaking Hanzo bug: Hold-right-click-to-move stops working completely

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 01:45 PM PST

I was wondering why the hell my hero wasn't moving properly and whether I was lagging really hard or something, but I found out that once you use a Hanzo ability, hold-right-click-to-move just stops working until you die.

This is extremely annoying, to say the least. It actually makes him unplayable for me.

Target banning through visible enemy team names is an intended mechanic and will stay

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 10:04 AM PST

Rich was playing team league with other pros/streamers and had 3 games in a row where their opponent dodged the draft.

The viewers were complaining about how this is a shit system/etc, Rich said he agreed and when he and other pros asked Blizzard during the tournament, Blizz stated they want people to be target banning enemy players in HL/TL and the name reveal will stay because of that.

I understand where Blizz is coming from, but if that's the case shouldnt Blizzard allow viewing enemy's profile as well? It was patched out but with their philosophy on names it only gives advantage to those who write down profiles and top picks for other players which is completly unrelated to the game. Maybe if the API was working and we could search up enemies it won't be a problem?

Should all heroes feature at least 4 different talent options at level 20?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:24 PM PST

In my mind, the level 20 tier is the tier where the talent design can go a little crazy - look at Medivh, he's got a talent that gives him the best waveclear, a talent that grants allies mana & spellpower, or a talent that cloaks an ally, as well as the two heroic upgrades. Granted, not all of these talents are generally super-strong, but it's super cool to see.

Then we look at a hero like Gul'dan, where he simply has 3 options - the two heroic upgrades, and Demonic Circle, which even though it's a level 20 talent, is pretty uninteresting in terms of what it brings to the hero.

There's quite a few heroes who only have 3 options at level 20, if gone by most recently released, these heroes are: Stukov, Cassia, Zul'jin, Gul'dan, Tracer, Chen and Zagara.

There should also be a special mention to Garrosh, who only has 4 talents under the prerequisite of picking Body Check at level 1.

There's also heroes like Malfurion who only has the choice of his two heroics or two generics at 20 - Rewind or Storm Shield. Probably the worst for this is Zagara, who has only 1 generic talent as their non-heroic choice.

What is it about HotS that keeps you coming back for more?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 06:04 PM PST

Why not Dota 2, League of Legends, or other games like Smite? Do you mix it up? Go through phases?

This comes from a conversation with a friend I've been having who keeps flip-flopping between HotS and LoL and I'm really intrigued as to what makes people tick.

Quick tips for climbing to Gold in HL

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 03:17 PM PST

Here is what I have picked up while reaching gold league. These rules only apply to lower leagues and I am mainly going the focus on hero roles:

  • At this stage there is generally only 1 comp people understand and that is a team-fight oriented comp.

  • In my opinion, you require 5 main roles which are main tank, map hero, healer, ranged damage and a finisher. It is usually better to have 2 tanks since u cant trust people to peel well.

  • A main tank should be able to engage, peel and zone. Your role is to keep your team mates alive but not at the cost of your life. If your team mate charges 1 v 5, try to help him retreat otherwise don't die with him. You being alive can save more heroes' lives. The only stat that matters is how many people you saved. Also never expect follow ups, instead be the one to follow up.

  • A map hero is a role that is specific to the map. The role is basically to control the map such as ragnorous on Braxis, dehaka/falstad on large maps, valla/lunara on Battlefield. Other heroes include Sylvannas, Nazeebo, Azmodan.

  • Healer's role is basically keep people alive just as a tank. Try to draft the healer that have more impact based on enemy draft. You want to draft burst heal to counter burst and sustain for sustain. Focus on allies that are currently getting targeted instead of the lowest health bar. Best stat to look at is clutch heals.

  • A ranged DPS's role is basically to apply damage. You want to focus on overextended targets first and then the weakest links on the enemy team. You always want consistent damage, this provides peel which can help your team to stay in fight or retreat. The role can be done by either an auto-attacker with sustain damage like valla or a mage with low cooldown abilities like Li Ming. The stat to look at is damage.

  • A finisher is someone who secures kills. Often times the enemy runs away with a sliver of health and this is the time for the finisher. This role can be covered by heroes such as tracer, genji, greymane, nova, zeratul. Best stat to look at is kills.

  • Always perform according to your role. Your role is more important than covering other people's mistakes. Only do the other if it doesn't hinder your main role.

  • Another stat that matters is how many times you have died. Not your team, just you. It is more important to keep track of it after level 10 since that is more game changing.

  • Always try to fill a role in draft. First pick should try secure a map specific hero or a hero you can carry with, Second pick should counter, middle picks should generally synergize and complete the comp and last pick should counter.

Please ping responsibly...

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 02:30 PM PST

So...

I have been playing Heroes of the Storm for awhile now. I'd like to think I'm a reasonable guy and am generally a team player, but I'm making my first post on this subreddit because of a reoccurring mannerism that I feel needs attention.

Spamming pings.

Maybe it's just me, but if I have a teammate who will RAPIDLY spam a ping 6-7 times on places on the map, you're going to get your pings muted by me. I'll still converse with you, and I'll even give such pings more attention if I know you can just ping something once to draw the eye towards what is going on with the minimap, but for the love of god please use the function in moderation.

Just a request.

Thank you for reading.

Blizzard plays a fun trick on me every season :D

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:35 PM PST

Every season Blizzard does this really fun trick that they are always calling 'play 10 placement matches' where you lose over 5000 points in 10 games. It's really good because you can get all the points back by playing around 200 games during the season, and just when you are thinking "this is the time it will all be okay" they pull it out again :D. Gets me every time :D.

Dear Blizzard, 10 minute snowball/stomp games are not fun.

Posted: 31 Dec 2017 11:27 PM PST

Please revert the tower/fort change or buff forts in some way. Every game in every mode is a clown fiesta and not fun to play. This is like the worst and longest running April fool's joke/shitty brawl game mode.
