Posted: 17 Jan 2018 08:19 PM PST

Have been playing mcc lately but the glitches are starting to get on my nerves... can somebody provide insight for h3 on the 360 or is it better to just stick with mcc?

Do the changes to the AR make it suitable for HCS in the future?

Posted: 17 Jan 2018 07:33 PM PST

The H5 Assault Rifle has been the subject of much debate and controversy. And the history of the debate over its place in the sandbox goes back when the beta came out and features such as smartlink and headshot damage were introduced with the weapon. For about a year and a half there was a big back and forth on the strength of it and the other automatics in the game. How much skill did it take to use, what kind of effect it had on higher levels of play, is it balanced compared to the rest of the game and other sorts of debates.

A lot of ire towards these types of weapons revolved around their ambushing capabilities in CQC with the old radar in effect. Other complaints about it "sniping" people from "long range", making heavy aim worse, and other sorts of anecdotes that had become talking points that I saw repeated on fourms, social media and other platforms.

Now during late 2016, 343 changed their maps to cut down on the number of tier two and three weapons as well as rearrange them to improve the flow of combat and as well as updating the maps for competitive play. The AR at that point was one of the least used weapons in the competitive meta due to weapons like the SMG and Storm Rifle often being picked up to replace it. This began to change when those two weapons became rarer or had been removed.

Speaking the statistical side, a acquaintance of mine had done some analysis back then on the old AR, SMG etc and found that the one Auto that truly was too strong the Storm Rifle

That also goes into the TTKs, shots plus melee, range another other statistical averages without factoring movement.

But the AR would eventually fall out of favor after the Summer Settings were revealed in April 2017. 343 initially cited player feedback and that the effectiveness of the AR was similar "across a wide variety of skill levels". Now this statement was too vague and caused confusion amongst people like me. Then Josh Menke came to clarify the reasoning behind removing the AR from HCS had mostly to do with skill ceiling issues. That being that around the Diamond level of ranks the effectiveness didn't really increase enough with skill. Not with it being overpowered. But they did leave a hanging statement that the AR would go under some modifications to get it back into competitive play as well as some other items removed like the Splinter Grenades and SMG.

So come five months latter and the AR and about 13 other weapons undergo a tuning to, as 343 puts it, establish unique roles for each weapon and remove redundancy and bring the sandbox to a more desirable state. Now personally I think there is more work to be done, but that's for a different discussion. For those who didn't quite figure out what changed with the AR. It went under another revision after player feedback was skewered toward negativity in the tuning test playlist. The following changes are:

1. The damage per bullet was lowered by about 23% (From 7.8 down to about 6.15)

2. Headshot bonus was increased by about 200% (from 2x to 4x for headshots)

3. The reticule size was decreased by about 7% (more accurate, but less forgiving for aim)

4. Aim assist "snap" was decreased by 20% (the reticule is less sticky when aiming with RRR)

5. Tolerance for shots going for headshots decreased by 99% (It's almost twice as hard to get a headshot/ less generous for giving headshot bonus)

6. Rate of fire increased by about 5% (from 615rpm to 640rpm)

New TTK is 1.2sec (13 shots) to 1.9sec (20 shots) it had been about 1.1sec (12 shots) to just under 1.5sec (15 shots)

Overall the ARs DPS goes down about 19% but the higher headshot damage, more accurate but harder aiming skill and slightly lower performance at range gives the weapon a more defined role.

With the AR changed to be more suited to competitive play, one wonders why it wasn't tested out as much. It did make appearances as the silenced version on some maps in the Oddball test playlist back in November.

The reason it disappeared has to do with how the starting weapons of that playlist were. The tuned BR and GF magnum had been what these new weapons had been balanced around. A shift away from the AR and Magnum set up at the beginning. The GF magnum was intended to be the weapon to deal with ARs and SMGs on the maps. However, these settings were critically panned by pros and other HCS players alike and 343 had to backtrack and make the settings Pistol starts again. Even thought the BR was updated again to be more consistent but not too strong at long and close range.

So the future remains to be seen if the settings will change after WHC 2018 finals. Or the weapons could be overhauled again since its clear that the goals 343 set out to accomplish haven't been met yet. The AR could probably get changed again if some problems surface again. Does the new AR have a place in HCS?

I know this is a long read but this has been a topic that ive been thinking about ever since lurking around here.
