Guild Wars 2 - I think Defiance "damage" should be shown above the enemy in blue numbers just like damage

I think Defiance "damage" should be shown above the enemy in blue numbers just like damage

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 05:51 AM PST

Defiance is one of the most important mechanics for bosses, but it's almost completely hidden. Your skills don't even say how much "damage" you're actually doing.

I think ArenaNet should make a change to where any time defiance damage is applied (via soft or hard CCs), we should see a number shown above the enemy in blue just like we do for damage. It could be defiance blue text or with a defiance blue background/visual like Retaliation and Confusion damage have (or condition damage if you have the setting where it's combined).

This would help players know when they're doing defiance damage, and could help them learn what skills do it since there's no real other indicator. Being able to see blue values suddenly appear when fighting Champions or bosses would at least help teach players that they are actively doing it, and when they're not doing it. This can easily lead to them asking questions, learning what skills do the blue damage, etc. Plus, it'd help if we could reference the blue damage when we're telling them to CC, or not CC.

Edit: Since that seems to be an initial concern: Yes, with relevant game options to combine (for conditions), minimize, or possibly hide the floater text if you so choose. I'm not a monster here... :D

PvP for non-Competitive Players - beginner and imtermediate

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 03:20 PM PST

INTRODUCTION - To do - Something about if you can survive all those pocket raptors, snipers, and exploding mushrooms you can handle PvP. Seomthing something, Conquest only.

Benefits

  • Transmutation charges out the wahzoo.
  • Tomes of Leveling out the wahzoo; great for Black Lion Key farms.
  • Dungeon weapons chests, armor chests, and tokens for the hard to do ones e.g. Arah.
  • Easy Mystic Clovers and other materials for Legendary Weapons from the Glorious Reward Track.
  • Bypass daily limits on Living Season map currencies like Blood Rubies.
  • Faster Daily Achievements.
  • Enhanced PvE skills.

  • Accept the program of GW2 dictates the rules, which include balance patches or lack thereof.
  • Accept that players computers, CPUs, GPUs, keyboards, mice, game settings, and Internet speed are different.
  • Accept full responsibility of your actions; computers do only what you tell them.
  • Don't be a sore loser.
  • Don't be a sore winner.
  • Say "Good Game" or "GG" at the end of every match.
  • Use the /bow emote before starting a duel.
  • Reality comes first.

When playing a game, the goal is to win, but it is the goal that is important not the winning. --Reiner Knizia

  • Don't worry about being hard core and always climbing the leader boards. Do play your best and to win the game.
  • If someone disconnects; play your best and to win the game.
  • If you are being completely dominated in a game. Do play your best and to win the game.
  • If you must disconnect, give explanation and apologize.

Everything in Moderation.

Settings

One of the first and easiest things to do for sPvP is to change your Game Settings. Various sPvP sites have their own guides but here are the summaries.

Graphics

The lower your graphics the faster the game runs and therefore the more easily you can see and react to playing the game. Shadows and Reflections hog the most resources. Character limit and quality aren't as important since there are not more than 10 people in a basic match.

Keybindings

  • Dodge - non-double tap Dodging lets you get into specific locations such as tiny safe spots among all the attack fields and marks.
  • Look Behind - get quick peaks if anyone is following you and can attack or lay fields as you run away.
  • About Face - more movement control
  • Store/Draw Weapons - use this to cancel attack. You probable do this already with Dodging, but Store weapons does it without wasting Energy.

Camera

  • Rotation - should be as high as possible without creating motion sickness.
  • Field of View (FOV) - adjust to taste to prevent motion sickness.
  • Height - adjust to set taste and easy of aiming.

General

  • Disable double-tap to Dodge.
  • Show enemy names always and camera shake off so you can see them.
  • Melee assist off so you can walk into opponents.
  • Target Heath Percent and Skill Recharge so you can see the specific numbers and time better.
  • Lock Ground target to Max Skill Range so if you cast out of range it still works.
  • Rest to taste
  • Standard enemy models will make everyone look like default humans. Less animations to learn, but need to use names to pick out specific players. (To Taste.)

Gameplay

PvP is the place to learn all the mechanics and nuances of the great active combat system of GW2. If you don't know them, you will learn by receiving them. Don't worry, being on the receiving end is actually the first step to learning it.

Downed Players

Defense

  • Each class have different skills while in the downed state but they all follow the same pattern.
  • Skill 1 - a basic weak attack, use this to tag as many nearby opponents, (spam 1 and Tab), then focus on the one with the least health.
  • Skill 2 - a skill to prevent being Stomped. This is either a teleport to a different location or an attack that does CC (and interrupts the Stomp).
  • Skill 3 - strong attack, use on opponent with lowest health after tagging all nearby ones
  • Skill 4 - heal yourself. Exits you from Stealth. Makes your character shout "over here".
  • Any opponent that you have tagged and is Stomped or dies will Rally you back up.
  • Therefore it is often best to use Skill 4 only when alone or being aided by a teammate that specializes in reviving.
  • Classes that have revive skills will often create a bubble or field around you immediately when they heal.

Offense

  • An an opponent is downed you either Stomp or Cleave them to death
  • If you have very strong Burst potential Cleave the downed opponent.
  • If the downed opponent has an annoying escape skill such as blinking or stealth Cleave them.
  • If you have high Sustain go for a Stomp.
  • Fake out your opponent by starting a Stomp, then Cancel out of it. (Press Escape, Store Weapons, or Dodge.) This may force the opponent to waste Skill2. It's a game of chicken and your gamble of out faking each other.
  • Practice stomping with the NPCs in the PvP lobby. Get to know each class and what they do.

Reviving

  • In general it is better to stomp/kill an opponent than revive a nearby teammate. Remember the teammate is tagging the opponents and will Rally when you kill them.
  • Do not revive if the teammate or yourself are in the middle of damaging or harmful fields.
  • Only focus on reviving in battle more so if you have a reviving skill or Trait.
  • Reviving a teammate outside of combat is fine.

Crowd Control

  • [Crown Control (CC)](wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Control_effect) are skills that explicitly affect the way the target moves (including to stop moving.)
  • CC skills are Fear Taunt and mostly anything with a grey icon.
  • If a CC is used while the target is performing a Skill the target will be Interrupted.
  • If the edges of the screen go white and you cannot use any Skills, you have been Interrupted.
  • Remember that downed players that cannot stealth or teleport can Interrupt you.
  • The Stability boon prevents all effects of CC and Interruption.
  • Aegis also prevents Interruption by taking one hit.
  • Blind also prevents Interruption by preventing one hit.
  • Invulnerable states such as Blocking, Evading (Dodge), and Distortion prevent Interruptions.

  • If you are Interrupted you can remove with still a skill that has ["Stun Break."](wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Stun_break)

  • Break Stun skills are marked with a broken chain icon.

  • If two Utility skills are very similar in their effects, most likely one is a Stun Break.

  • There are also a few skills that can be used while Interrupted that don't have Stun Break e.g. Mesmer Staff 2.

Hiding

Stealth

  • Stealth will make the player invisible to the opponent and transparent to teammates.
  • Stealth can be stacked for longer times of being invisible.
  • Stealth from Mesmers cannot be stacked with other classes, only fellow Memser skills.
  • Standing completely still while Stealth looks exactly the same as moving to a new location.

Reveal

  • Revealed means that the player cannot (re)enter Stealth.
  • Using an attack that deals Power damage will Reveal the player for 3 seconds.
  • There are very few skills that force Reveal on a target, even if they aren't Stealth.
  • [Reveal skills](wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Revealed) are themed around chains or eyes.

Builds

Roles

  • Power - damages opponents using Power based attacks. Often very bursty; exploding dealing heavy damage in less than 3 seconds.
  • Condi - damage opponents by giving them mutiple stacks and many types of conditions. Often is more durable than Power.
  • Support - focuses on helping other players. Then will have high healing for others, gives lots of boons, cleanse conditions, revive others quickly, be very defensive or hard to kill. Or any combination of those.
  • Plus One (+1) - a player that cannot kill opponent by themselves but are very good at helping others kill opponents.
  • Bunker - a player that remains at a location and defends it; either by killing intruders or continually surviving long enough that they leave.
  • Roamer - a player that moves about freely attacking at will; require a great amount of PvP experience.

Copying

The easiest way to start playing PvP is just to copy a build from a website or community dedicated to pvp. Currently metabattle.com is the most popular and up to date. The comment section will gladly point out any errors or preferences.

Building your own.

  1. Get your feet wet in PvP with a Premade build. See above.
  2. Note that all Amulets, Runes, and Sigils can be sorted by categories.
  3. Start with your Amulet. This will determine how your character will play: power, condition, or support.
  4. You NEED defensive stats in PvP. Use Marauder at least for Power, Carrion for condition, and Magi for Healing.
  5. Focused builds are more useful in PvP than general spread out stats.
  6. Pick a Rune that matches and supports your Amulet. Pay attention to it's secondary stat and level 6 effect.
  7. Pick your 3 Specializations that match your build. Not the Traits yet! Pay attention to the Minor Abilities i.e. the traits between the sets of 3 you pick. These are big clues to whether the specialization is Power, Condi, or Support.
  8. Finally pick your traits. Make sure they synergize with each other and what you are planning to do. Pay close attention to "weak" traits. Often what is "weak" for regular PvE is very strong or useful in PvP.
  9. It is possible to focus on one trait and build entirely around it. E.g. give X on a dodge.
  10. Pick your weapons that match your build.
  11. Pick your Runes that will match your build. Not that Poison on Swap is very popular even with Power builds since Poison reduces Healing Power of the opponents.
  12. Pick your Healing, Utility skills, and Elite skills. Again pay attention to "weak" ones they maybe more useful in PvP. Also make sure you have at least one Stun Break.
  13. Play a couple of matches. Notice what works and what doesn't, then adjust a little bit. Switch a rune of the same stat to a different one. Try a different a weapon of the same type i.e. power, condi, support.
  14. Goto 13.

Pre Game

Map Comprehension

The first step to a match is choosing the map. Most players focus on the gimmick of the map. However pay attention to the layout of the map as well. Does this map have lots of ramps, stairs, and platform? Am I good enough as jumping up or teleporting through them quickly? Are there perches where I can snipe with my range attacks. Is there a ledge I can attack from then quickly jump off to avoid damage?

Map Gimmick Terrain
Battle of Kylo Trebuchet, leave it alone in Ranked. Spiraling stairs and platforms in the center, lots of houses and archways on the sides.
Eternal Coliseum Grab Shield and Sword artifacts of Offense and Defense buffs. Get a kill streak to Rally the crowd and double points. Very flat and open.
Forest of Niffleheim Kill each of two bosses for 25 points and boost all stats. Long roads, medium cover. Small JP at middle.
Legacy of the Foefire break the walls and kill opponent Boss for 150 points i.e. win if you have 350 points. Flat and wide but small cover locations here and there.
Revenge of the Capricorn Capture the Bell Point for increasing points each time, 25, 50, 75, 100. Flat and wide with a a few standing perches (stacked boxes).
Skyhammer Capture the Skyhammer Point to zap all Points and make them yours. Lots of ramps, stairs, floating platforms, archways, rooms, and jumping pads.
Spirit Watch Grab the heavy orb and take it to a node. If yours 30 points, else 15 and make it neutral (white). Open spaces connected with ramps.
Temple of the Silence Storm Chanel the upper item to double your points. Channel the lower one to capture all points. Lots of ramps and roads and rooms.

Match Confirmation

  • Type /p or /t to switch to Party or Team chat. Do not use Map Chat (/m) since the opponent can read that too.
  • Press B when in the PvP map. This will show the team composition.
  • Pay attention to what classes your opponents are.
  • Click on your teammate and look under their health bars. Any signets, boons, and effects will tell you want type of Role they are playing.
  • Talk with your teammates. Ask what they are doing, or tell them what you are doing.
  • As you play more games you will be able to tweak your build in this 30 second time slot. Start off small with just one Utility skill. Lots of range attackers? Reflect. Lots of condi? Cleanse. Class that always instant kills you? Maybe a blink or stealth.

Game Time (Conquest)

Basic Play

  • One player goes to Home. This player will be good at 1 vs. 1 fights or being a bunker (high sustain and difficult to kill.)
  • The player that goes for Home is often very experienced. They know how to handle different classes and know when to stay at Home or eventually come to help Mid.
  • All other go and fight for Mid.
  • Depending on the fight at Mid you will either be respawning to take Mid, bunker at Mid because it was a difficult fight, or have a few people push to Far.

Sides

  • Sides is to focus on capturing and defending Close and Far Points, not Mid.
  • Sides is played when the opponent bunkers in the Middle.
  • Sides is played when your team has very mobile characters such as Thieves, and Mesmers.

Post Game

  • Type /m and then GG.
  • Talk with your teammates and ask how you did.
  • Listen to their comments and adjust as needed.
  • Always ask yourself "what did I do wrong?" Then make sure not to do that next time.

PVP the Though Process

90% of Football is half mental.

While in a game, when in doubt ask yourself, "how can I get more points or prevent the opponent from getting points?"

1 vs. 1

Whoever has the the better build and skill skill will win.

2 vs. 1

Two players will always beat one unless they are unskilled or one is very skilled. Ideal for +1 players.

3 vs. 1

Three totally dominates. It's the point that you should ask yourself, "this is overkill am I wasting time, power, pressure by being here?"

Line of Sight/Cover

Same rules apply in PvE as PvP. If there is something between you and your attacker, it's a miss. Dip behind a pillar, box, or even drop a step to prevent line of sight.

HAXS!

Minions, clones, and pets can detect people in Stealth. Watch where they go and act appropriately.

Higher Ground

It's always easy to go down than to climb up.

Lay of the Land

Look to the horizon. It is about 25% from the top of the screen. You can often see opponent faster this way than on the minimap.

Navigator

Be aware of the minimap. Look at how your team and opponents are moving. Are they alone? Why are they taking that path? How many are there? 2? 3? All?

It's not so much that I win, but you Lose.

Every kill gives 5 points. Expeditious retreats is a valid tactic since you are denying the opponent 5 points. If one opponent constantly kills you or you are unable to kill them; avoid them.

Eye's on the Prize

No Vendetta's. It is very easy to fixate on play opponent and get revenge kills. Always remember "is this going to get the most points?"

Fight on Point ... Sometimes

Only ONE person needs to be on a Point to capture it. More people on a Point does nothing to speed it up or down. Player say "fight on point" because if one is downed, there is another to replace them and prevent the Point shifting to the opponent. Remember that the goal is to get to 500 points the fastest. If you kill one player (easily) off the Point that's still 5 points and one less person to worry about.

Can't Beat em? Join them!

If a class is constantly killing you or you hate them, play them. Remember you can PvP at level 3 and everything is unlocked. Whip up a character, load a build and play them. You will find out all of their strengths and weaknesses and therefore ways to counter them.

When you decide to go for Daily Ranked Winner

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:21 AM PST

Early story mission: Infiltration. "My name's, er, Shadow. Just got outta prison today!" This is so close to an American God's reference that I'm curious if it is.

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 11:32 AM PST

When you sneak in the Bandit cave and get a costume and first meet Switch behind the door and he introduces himself, that's your characters response.

Or is it just common that dudes named "Shadow" get out of prison at some point during stories?

Can't play on your friend's "Full" world? (repost)

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 12:28 PM PST

Over the past couple of months, I've been working on this. An app which sounds an alarm when population on a full world is no longer full. You can monitor any world you want. Instead of manually checking world pop, all you need to do now is choose which world you want to join and an alarm will sound when population decreases.

https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.moducode.gw2serveralarm.eerf

I originally posted this about a month back. However, Google repeatedly removed my app from the store because I was breaking their "impersonation" policy. When I asked them exactly what I was doing wrong, they said they weren't allowed to give specifics. I just gave up on putting it back on the store, until recently. I changed the app icon and all other assets (removed the GW2 "dragon" logo). At the moment, it's a beta release. If I don't get another strike after a week or 2, I'll move it to production (being publicly viewable) and update with a paid version to remove ads. Enjoy.

Mimic mirage Skyhammer meta? portal jump pad things

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 09:07 AM PST

No matter how hard you try we will keep finding our way to the wurms. And the bases. And other stuff.

Its just a fun little thing, all of this requires a lot of effort and none of it can really be used to your advantage in a real pvp scenario so i thought it would be safe to post.

Recommended games for curing burnout?

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 11:24 AM PST

I'm not really aiming to complain about GW2. I've put hundreds of fun-filled hours into this game. But as time goes on I want to log in less and less between major updates. It seems my primary motivation for getting on at all is for something else to do for an hour while I kick back to some tunes.

I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar and found any other games that they've gotten into and pairs well with just kicking back to music for a while?

So what are the Pact/Orders of Tyria up to lately?

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 09:44 AM PST

You'd think with all of the hubbub about Kralky and Joko they'd be active, especially when we see that in LS3 they're still hanging around. It's weird that even with Logan being marshall we'd see more action.

Also is Soulkeeper stuck in Bloodstone Fen or did she finally waypointed away?

Do you have a quality of life tip, an awesome armor/weapon skin or something Else you World wish you had known earlier? Share it!

I recommend The Mystic Salvage kit, 250 uses and good percentages, then you dont need The copper or silver feds :)

Getting serious desync issues from nowhere (been going on for 3 weeks). Can somebody please help me?

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 09:38 AM PST

Hey guys!

I posted a similar thread a while ago and I have been getting really bad desync issues ever since. I get desync while in sPvP even with under 50 ping which is so weird, and sucks as my main is a thief. It happens in 70% of the games I play in sPvP and also sometimes in WvW.

PvP is all I play in gw2 so these problems really makes me consider quitting. Not sure why it happens as I have a really good net.

Does somebody have any idea? Is it just me?

Thanks

EDIT; Sometimes I bump up to 350 ping from nowhere, which is super weird. Has to do with the servers....

Need help with my charr's looks

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 09:41 AM PST

So I wanted to give some sort of new look for my charr ranger (medium armor) and it's based on a color scheme of: cold/crisp greens - teal - black

But I need help figuring out weapon skins / backpack and if I should do something to his current look to improve it. I have access to nearly all dyes and mount skins, just need to figure out what kind of backpack / weapon skins I should go for and if I could change the armor skins or if theyre good as of now. Color suggestions are also welcomed as long as they fit the theme and are specificly cold colors.

I use shortbow and dagger/torch

Attachments (using depth of field in screenshots to bring better focus): https://imgur.com/xwcVAlO https://imgur.com/sFuS56R https://imgur.com/5bBGtk8 https://imgur.com/WljPG7J

I also got no idea what I'm going to do with my springer and jackal. Green and black seem harder to work on with them.

Guys,

We killed it finally ! Dhuum the final boss of wing 5 in challenge mode ! [DCMD] is a guild we created to gather people for the kill, this kill required a lot of organisation from us and especially our leader Cupi, our spanish friend Makron and our french girl Feria.

Most "simple" and noob-friendly Roaming profession?

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 12:06 AM PST

Good morning everyone! Based on a previous forum thread, I understand Mesmer, Mirage, Thief (both specs), Ranger (both specs), Holosmith and Spellbreakers are the "top" professions for roaming due to things such as sustainability, stealth, etc. For a player new to roaming, which profession/spec would you consider to be the most noob friendly? I zerg with FB and for open world/everything else, I play Condi Mirage but roaming is it's own beast and I would like to explore it more (preferably not as Mesmer/mirage or FB..looking for something new). I do not have much experience with the other aforementioned professions which is why I am reaching out to you all so I can start at square 1.

Thank you for reading.
