Improving Epic’s customer service

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 11:00 AM PST

We are not happy with the level of customer service we have been providing to players.

The key issues are:

  • lack of timely response
  • responses that are not in line with our company values
  • inconsistent level of quality

Internally, our failures were caused by several factors:

  • Staffing of Epic's customer support hasn't kept up with growth of the player base. We failed to anticipate and quickly react to growth.

  • We didn't properly communicate core values and our overall philosophy to the Customer Support team, leaving agents without clear guidance. This was compounded by us not having a great internal feedback loop to process issues.

  • We focused on average response time when we should have also been looking at outliers.

  • We used customer service as a fallback safety net instead of fixing or improving root causes. E.g. issues with account linking is something we need to improve on the development / UX side.

We are in the process of addressing these issues with a goal of providing excellent player support on two fronts:

  • First response time in under 8 hours
  • Positive and thoughtful resolutions on the first interaction

This will take time to accomplish but we are committed to delivering the level of service you deserve.

Please reach out if you were unhappy with a previous support ticket resolution and we will work to make it right! Also feel free to reach out to me at daniel.vogel@epicgames.com to make me aware of outliers and areas we need to improve. I can't promise that I'm going to respond to all emails, but I will definitely read them all.

Thanks for playing!

The Advantage of 1(1)

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 03:40 PM PST

So, I started a Deliver the Bomb 70 mission. After some time, other players joined and their power level was displayed as "1(1)" as usual for the last few days.

I played as a constructor (PB Knox) and everybody (Soldier, Ninja, and Outlander) gave me their materials and their supply drops without me ever asking for it. So, I built the base and traps, the Outlander brought me a couple of llamas, the Soldier cleared the area of all the husks around us and between A and B, and the Ninja got the BluGlo. After delivering the bomb (all of us together) and starting the deployment, to my surprise, nobody was standing on the traps or shooting husks before even reaching the traps (even for missions at the end of CV, this is not the norm). And when I got jumped by a couple of mini husks and took some damage, one of the players ran to me and used his adrenalin rush to heal me even though he was full health.

After the game, I looked at the score screen and noticed that they were 23 to 33 levels lower than the mission. This was a huge surprise. If I knew at the beginning that three players with a power level of not even 50 joined me for a 70 mission, I would have been upset. And if I would have joined that mission as the last player and saw in the lobby a pl 37 player in a level 70 mission, I am not sure I would have even gone in. But they were the most helpful players I saw in a long time and they seemed to have a great game sense as they knew what they should do and what everybody's is best at. It was such a smooth mission and it felt awesome to collaborate with other random people effortlessly. This time, I am glad it showed 1(1).

Tl;dr: had a game with players half my power level without knowing it, and they didn't need a carry.

In my 20+ years of gaming, I've received my first ban.

Posted: 23 Jan 2018 11:47 PM PST

I wish I joking. I picked up a permanent ban from Epic Games completely wiping all of my progress on both Fortnite and Paragon. But why?

My egregious Display Name: IpokedHitler

I admit the name is stupid. But I've had the same one for years and it's always a conversation piece.

What bugs me is that Epic Games allowed that name to be registered and then proceed to swing the ban hammer. Now I understand that they may have not implemented a way to prevent bad names beforehand, but there is certainly a better way to go about solving the issue.

Shout out to CCP (Eve Online), when they started cracking down on names, they simply renamed your character to CaldariCitizen367754215.

Seriously though, I know that I'm not alone in this situation. Google searches have shown me that other gamers are trying to dispute the same ban but Epic just blocks the email addresses after they give you the reasoning for the ban.

Edit: Devs from Epic reached out to me and reactivated my account as well as sent me a link to change my Display Name. Also compensated my time by giving me 7500 V bucks.

Increase the material cap!

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 07:30 AM PST

It's basically just a cap on creativity. Make it at least 1500 or picking up any mats will send it to your storm shield.

My issue with the game atm is the Afk players.

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 05:19 PM PST

In past few days im having a lot issues with people go afk and we cant do nothing about

I know some of us dont want to spend 30min in a match and want to rush the objective , others dont care about the objective and go afk the entire match and f#$% the team , in this situation i would prefer a rush match 1000 times than 1 match with 1 afk.

Anyway i hope someday epic will implement some kind of report in game , not the feedback feature because im getting the feeling that epic dont even care about reading if u complaining about a afk guy.

PSA: Dont open llamas today !!

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 04:35 PM PST

Just bought the niner llama and opened it after the event closed. Still got snowflake tickets. Luckily, it put me at 1k tickets, which Epic states will translate into a llama tomorrow. BUT , if it had put me at 900 it would have all been thrown away. A waste of 8 rare slots from a llama. So buyer beware, you will get snowflake tickets in llamas until tomorrow and it could very well be a waste.

Evacuate the Shelter

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 03:24 PM PST

I feel like Evacuate the Shelter ought to have some survivors to evacuate. Something like Deliver the Bomb where you have to escort a group of 20 survivors from one place to another.

Platinum, gold, silver, and bronze awards would be based on how many survivors actually survive the journey.

Doesn't need to have a base to defend on the receiving end. Just an extraction point. Maybe the Battle Bus picks them up.

Can we get better rewards for collection book?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 05:10 PM PST

Hey everyone. I am above level 50 in the collection book and the rewards are not up to par for what it takes to level it up. As of now a legendary item (which I have the potential to cash in to the collection book) will level me up 1.25x. My next major milestone (in 5 levels) is a rare soldier, constructor, ninja or outlander. Think we could ante up the rewards cause it's pointless to archive a legendary weapon for 1500 survivor XP when I can get thousands of schematic XP by harvesting it. I like using the collection book and I want to eventually fill it up but it's just not worth it.

EPIC Could You Look Into Material Downgrading

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 05:43 AM PST

I was thinking it would be a nice feature to be able to downgrade material. It would be nice to be able to downgrade any sort of crafting material. Break down a stack of tier 4 materials and get tier 1 1/2 stack of tier 3 etc. I'm currently in Twine and find myself running out of tier 3 materials as I haven't been able to upgrade all of my traps/weapons. I'm having to go back to Canny and constantly farm mechanical parts and ore...just give it a thought?

New to the game - why do some people build so much?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 07:24 AM PST

Hi all,

So my journey to this game has been recent and quick. Two weeks ago my brother convinced me to download Battle Royale for my Xbox so I could play with him and his friend. I relented, it was fantastic, we play together frequently now and have won a handful of team matches.

I have been quite happy with this game, so I figured I would throw some money at Epic for it. I haven't bought myself a new game in years (I almost exclusively play Halo 5) so I figured paying full price for a game I'm actually enjoying is worth it. I bought the $60 version of Save the World last Friday and here we are.

I have slowly learned how to build, how to funnel zombies, and how to use traps. Yesterday I hopped into one of the missions where you defend a van. No one else was there, so I slowly set up a small fort around the van, with a few traps and walls to funnel zombies. Great. I start the waves, and suddenly two other players show up. No worries - I assume they'll see that I already built a fort, maybe add to it a bit, but otherwise help me defend.

One of the new guys just starts throwing walls up everywhere. Covers up my traps, locks my healing pad between multiple layers of walls... Already I'm annoyed, as I would have just saved my traps and resources had I known this person would negate all of them. Of course we also went over the build limit and received no bonus there either. That's not the worst part though - this new Frankenfort actually ended up getting the van damaged multiple times, because it was impossible to see the zombies or even move around easily within the fort. It was a mess and it made me wary of building when playing with strangers.

Anyone else have this experience? Are these just folks who are stuck in the Battle Royale mentality of "build build build" without thinking? Or was I being griefed?

Undocumented Issue: Corrosion & Corrosive Blade do not work as described by Tooltip.

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:33 PM PST

Since /u/MrPopoTFS has advised that "Known Issues" will be listed in the patch notes going forward (and this isn't documented and has been an issue since launch, then the issue made worse since patch V.1.9) I'm listing it here.

For Reference (the subject matter)

Corrosion (Tactical Squad Bonus)

  • Critical hits from melee weapons deal 15% of hit damage every second for 3 seconds while reducing movement speed by 30%. Applies to all classes. Tactical bonuses are applied to your Primary Hero when this Hero is in your Tactical slot.

Corrosive Blade (Ninja: level 30 ability)

  • Critical hits from the Ninja's edged weapons deal 30% of hit damage over time while reducing movement speed of target by 30%. If you also have Smoke Assassin, Corrosive Blade will take precedence when it can. The damage of Smoke Assassin and Corrosive Blade will not combine.

Important

  • Corrosion (which is the tactical bonus) will work with all melee weapons. This includes blunt and penetrating weapon types (so if you run around on a Tank Penny, like clubbing things with your hammer and want a little bit of extra damage, this will work for you).

  • If you are a Ninja with Corrosive Blade and you crit a target with a non-edged weapon it will apply Corrosion. If you then weapon-swap to an edged weapon and crit the target it will 'override' the Corrosion with Corrosive Blade (why you would be using a non-edged weapon, or have a Deadly Blade slotted into the tactical slot if you were a Ninja with Corrosive Blade already is besides the point)

The Issue

  • The abilities do not deal (15%/30%) of the (critical) hit damage when a critical hit is applied

  • Damage is capped at 10,000 damage against normal husks (and has been this way since launch)

  • Damage is capped at 5,000 damage against 'elemental: fire, water, nature' type husks (became this way from patch V.1.9)

Explaining the Abilities

  • The abilities only occur on critical hits, therefore all (applicable) hits are critical hits.

  • The abilities apply a % of the critical hit damage as bonus damage (15% and 30% for the respective ability)

  • The bonus damage is to be applied each second for 3 seconds.

The concept: How it should work

  • If I land a critical hit on my target for 100,000 damage, then my 'hit' value is 100,000

  • 15% (using Corrosion) of 100,000 damage is 15,000 damage

  • Each second for 3 seconds suggests 15,000 damage should be applied 3 times (or 4 times, if you assume it applies at time = 0, 1, 2, 3)

  • The total bonus damage should be 45,000 damage, or 60,000 damage.

The Reality: The values obtained in-game

Stats and Heroes used for these Videos

Video 1 (Physical Husk)

  • 68,368: Cresent Kick (also stuns Blaster, applies a 40% vulnerability)

  • 33,570: Melee (light attack), does not crit

  • 112,428: Melee (light attack), critical hit

  • 14,000: Corrosion, benefitting from Cresent Kick (10,000 * 1.4)

  • 14,000: Corrosion, benefitting from Cresent Kick (10,000 * 1.4)

  • 10,000: Corrosion

  • 10,000: Corrosion

Video 2 (Element: Nature, Husky Husk)

  • 75,297: Melee (light attack), critical hit

  • 5000: Corrosion

  • 5000: Corrosion

  • 5000: Corrosion

  • 10,000: Corrosion (unable to explain this damage value unless Corrosion can critical hit, or ability triggered without applying damage reduction due to elemental typing)

Discussion of Results vs Hypothetical

What we saw

Video 1

  • Corrosion damage is considered to be a 'physical' damage source: it will benefit from vulnerabilities (like debilitating shots)

  • The base corrosion damage is ticking for 10,000 damage and it occurs 4 times (at time = 0, 1, 2, 3)

Video 2

  • Corrosion is ticking for 5,000 damage (which is in line with a 50% physical damage reduction vs element)

  • Corrosion can apparently 'critical hit' for a bonus 100% damage (or the element damage reduction was not applied)

What the values should have been

Video 1

  • Damage of the critical hit was 112,428 damage

  • 15% of 112,428 is 16,864.2 (rounding down, the base value of each corrosion tick should be 16,864 damage)

Video 2

  • Damage of the critical hit was 75,297 damage

  • 15% of 75,297 is 11,294.55 (rounding down, the base value of each corrosion tick should be 11,294 damage)

  • Physical attacks vs element are reduced by 50% (property of the husk). Before patch V.1.9, this did not apply to Corrosion/Corrosive Blade

  • Applying a physical reduction, the base value (rounded down) for each corrosion tick should be 5,647 damage

Heroes affected by this issue

  • All Heroes who equip a Deadly Blade for the Tactical Slot Bonus

  • Variants of the Assassin, Deadly Blade and Alchemist Heroes (for which Corrosive Blade is supposed to be a powerful level 30 ability, just like "Keep Out!!!" is for Master Grenadier and Urban Assault Soldiers)

Is the damage loss really that significant?

  • For the Ninjas with Corrosive Blade the bonus damage is supposed to be 30% of their critical hit damage per second.

  • A 100,000 damage critical hit should produce a 30,000 bonus damage tick per second (literally 30,000 dps)

  • The current maximum Corrosive Blade bonus damage 'tick' is 10,000 (minimum loss of 20,000 dps)

  • 10,000 * 4 = 40,000, 30,000 * 4 = 120,000, that's a difference of 80,000 additional damage.

In more simplistic terms

  • The value of Corrosive Blade is (supposed) to be worth 120% of the damage of a Critical Hit

  • If I critical hit for 100,000 damage, Corrosive Blade should deal a total of 120,000 damage (against non-element targets)

  • As a % of a husks health pool, as long as 1 critical hit sword swing would deal approximately 46% of a husks total health pool, the husk will die after 3 seconds with no further attacks required from the Ninja (100,000/220,000 is approx 45.45%)

Desired Outcome

Either of these would be acceptable, it should be obvious which would be preferable but the main point is to have player expectations match the descriptions provided to them by the game environment (i.e. descriptions from the UI)

  • 1. Fix the damage calculations (modify the code) so Corrosion/Corrosive Blade actually provide the 15%/30% damage as suggested by their tooltips
  • 2. Change the tooltips to document that damage values are capped at certain values (15%/30% of a critical hit, or 10,000/5,000 damage, whichever is smaller).

Most desirable storm items

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 09:07 PM PST

With the storm zone coming back I am curious as to what the most desirable items from this event are/were. I didn't play much for this event so I only got a few things the first time around. Are any of the heroes particularly noteworthy? Any weapons (other than hydra) particularly powerful even with mediocre rolls?

My fortnite has problems with loading textures in the beginning of the game.

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:08 PM PST

I have a decent computer (i5 7600k, 1070, etc) and in the beginning of the game my textures won't load in. I will be stuck in a "crayon" building and for two minutes my game won't load. I'm not able to break anything nor can i even open and pick up any weapons. I will just get killed instantly. Anyone know a solution? (I can run pubg just fine with 100 fps at high settings)

Its been 12 days since my last support reply for my problem that occurred 28 days ago

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 02:42 PM PST

After struggling with barely getting responses from my ticket and getting escalated from the dump back to the garbage bin, I'm getting ghosted by the support team. My problem has yet to be resolved and although at this point I've farmed enough to keep playing, it just goes to show how bad their support system is. If you want to get anything done about your account you have to whine about it publicly. This is me whining.

https://i.imgur.com/6fTn7FS.png approx 150 stacks of items lost Case #: 1587804

Its been 12 days after my reply and haven't received a word back. I'm sure I am not the only one. Their last message to me was asking what I had lost in the bug.

Whine below.

Edit: read the pinned thread and follow through with that process. I ended up getting compensated finally.

Floor Launchers. FLOOR LAUNCHERS

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:28 AM PST

A lot of new people showing up lately and I feel like one piece of important advice hasn't been on this reddit in a while: Floor Launchers are your most important trap, so make sure you level one up.

Build box around objectives. Build reverse stairs outside box (inverse pyramid). Don't worry about corners (no need to waste mats as husks wont attack corners). Put floor launcher under the reverse stairs.

Bam. Done. The only build you will ever need for the base.

Notes:

  • Build kill tunnels outside of base if you think the your team won't have enough firepower to survive with just the launchers.

  • The floor launcher is superior to wall launchers, because you can double up the walls with the same amount of space (wall plus ramp instead of just wall) and get the same knockback.

  • You want the floor launcher with the most reload speed. An epic with reload speed is better than a legendary without reload speed. A high reload speed launcher will reset before the husks make it back to the wall, meaning that non smashers/hanks will never break your walls.

  • If you have a non smasher/hank wave, you can literally defend the base without doing damage by making a floor launcher box and repairing. This is the Hotfixer method, but it is super boring and I regret leveling him even though it works slightly too well.

  • Floor launchers are about saving mats and not having to build a big base. If you have an atlas defense mission, I recommend building a pyramid over the 1x1 atlases, because that makes them immune to smasher charges and you can just build walls farther out if you want floor launchers. Building large pyramids over non-1x1 structures takes way too many mats and increases the base size, meaning you need a ton of mats to make walls with launchers outside the new huge pyramid.

  • For SSD defense, put a wall launcher on the wall behind the inverse ramp, so if the ramp gets destroyed, you still have another launcher. Then, put a triple stack wall behind the wall launcher (Wall, ramp, halfwall floor). It will take husks roughly a year to beat through all that.
