All the Videos I Made for Captains Draft 4 are now Released, here they are!

Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:31 AM PST

Hey Guys, Slacks here!

Hope u guys enjoyed CD4. it was a ton of work (especially for sunsfan and niki) but it was a great feeling seeing a live audience attend one of our events for the first time. It was a blast for me and I hope you guys had a blast watching there or at home!

Due to it being our first LAN, we forgot a few things. One of those things was uploading videos before they aired, and lord knows we didnt wanna risk uploading them from the venue with the games going on at the same time. But now that the event is over, I went ahead and released all the content we made. I figured I would link you guys to it, and include some little stories

First up are the Tour pieces. I wanted to show that DC was a cool place to visit but had a really hard idea coming up with how to show them off and tell facts in a interesting way, since you cant really interact with them at all and we didnt have a tour guide. I dunno how we came up with a ghost, but maut did great. One fun fact was that filming these was the coldest ive ever been in my life. While it may look sunny, i assure you the windchill made a already 20 degrees a cool below zero, and we were litterally dying. check out maut's hands and his actual shivering in the Lincoln peice! Anyway, i liked how the ghost got more and more insane as we kept him alive in the mortal world. Enjoy!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKvcSF8cgkI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5iwJFqn-T0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAAs9WBDD3c

Next up was Aghseptional Ideas. The goal of this was pretty simple, get players to talk about something funny for a while for longer content peice. One thing all players know about is dota and balance, so i threw this idea out there. Originally this was going to be a podcast like series on my personal youtube (the intro was done months ago for this, by the same guy that does loregasm) but we were short on time so I had to forgo my personal plans and use this for the tourney. Maybe this will come back a a youtube series, but who knows. The players had a lot more fun than I thought with this, but my favorite was EG cause fear gave the exact response I was looking for

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rug2AytDWXM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6WFCqb5-uE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY3IqUdlQR8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8e-7qsHUlc

Players Perspective is a obvious ripoff of drunk history, but man was it fun. Fly was my favorite but RTZ was strangly dedicated to getting the info correct. I gave th players 5 minutes to read wikipedia on their topic before filming, so they honestly did pretty good. Complexities recording was long as hell and quite honestly mostly insane rambling. I think the crew did great acting it out and we had a blast

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfCmB0QDdoo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrQ0sMAJ6oM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3Orc8WptTo

Non english speaking teams are always a interesting problem to solve. A lot of the guys are super cool and entertaining, but the language barrier is always a issue. Typically 1 guy from the team can translate, but a lot of the fun can be lost in translation. This idea for never have I ever was a attempt to slve this, by showing the team having fun, learning about them, but having as little dialogue as possible. I think it went pretty well!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD6cbUf3EO0

I had origianlly wanted to do these post game interviews after every series, but after being the stage host, panelist, panel host, statsman, interviewer, breaking news writer, and more every day i just kinda ran out of time. this was the only one that I could make. I recorded this by holding a blue snowball on my laptop right after Yap got off the stage, and it clearly shows since you cant understand what the fuck he is saying. Originally i wanted to have the text scroll on the page, but again, not enough time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7qfroeQQCg

Finally, this piece was created due to us not being able to actually film in the museam, but be able to take "long pictures". when i showed this to Zyori, he said "this is the worst thing you have ever made" and most of the crew was 100% sure it was a abomination. I laughed every time i watched it so i made them put it on. Mistake? You decide!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBpr3U9aKvw

Welp, thats it. Had a lot of fun in DC, I left for CD4 on December 26th to help out which was right after midas mode and im still not home yet, but i can't wait to have some down time. Hope u liked the content and see you around!

What happened to power treads? (And other boots)

Posted: 09 Jan 2018 05:20 AM PST

I'll use power treads for this example, but this is also true for phase and arcanes, to a smaller extent.

For basically years, completing your power treads was the first little power spike of the game. They are cost-effective, provide a nice chunk of whatever stat you want, and even add a touch of AS. Any analyst/caster/streamer would say the same; upgrading your boots is important.

Then they buffed treads from ++8 to +10 stats, and people stopped buying them.

Now, it's just brown boots. Brown boots PL, brown boots lycan, brown boots puck and so on. Watching a pro game yesterday, 6 heroes ended the game with brown boots.

Were other items buffed or introduced and treads are now lower value than they were? Is it just a meta-shift for some reason? What happened to the amazing value that treads used to give?

edit: A lot of good points guys, I'lll admit it might be a touch of confirmation bias on my part but it's bringing out some good discussion. Apparently treads are still the most bought item in the game!

My journey to becoming a pro Dota 2 player part 5: Leaderboards, and future plans

Posted: 09 Jan 2018 08:41 AM PST

Part 1, 2, 3, 4 for the lazy ;p

Hey Reddit, there hasn't been too much exciting stuff going on since my last post, but I figured this would be a good time to share some of my future plans going into my third year, along with some small updates.

First off, how has my mmr fared since the new system (I was a bit over 7k before reset)? Thanks to medusa, I managed to win 9 out of my 10 calibration games, and calibrated at 6.2k, which was roughly top 300 at my time of calibration. Then for some reason I lost my touch and managed to drop from 300 to nearly 3000 in a few days. I was ready to get it back, and then my gpu broke, so I had to wait for my replacement >_<

When I got back into Dota again, I felt really good about my play (you know that feeling when people raging or griefing doesn't affect you, and you just try your best every game? It rocks!). I guess you could call it a winning mood, I can't explain it.

Thanks to my winning mood and drow and shadow shaman spamming I finally managed for the first time to get in the top 200 of europe (which was one of my goals when I first set out on this journey)! FeelsGoodMan

Next up, I am finally in the process of getting myself a sub button on my twitch, so I'm kind of excited about that. - I only recently started streaming again (I felt like it was hindering my improvement, but I feel like a healthy balance can be struck between streaming every day for 10 hours, and not streaming at all), and I look forward to playing some doto on stream.

So with those updates out of the way, What's next? I have some short term-, long term-, and ''Side''-goals.

Short term goals:

--I want to find a stable team again (my last stable team was more than half a year ago, and since then it's been on and off). I would prefer to play as carry, but I feel like because I play so much carry, I have a good grasp of how a position 5 has to play. So if a support opportunity comes about, I will gladly take it.

--I want to reach 7k new mmr (roughly 50-75ish on leaderboard), speaks for itself, just a personal skill milepoint.

Long term goals:

--Qualify for a lan event, getting mmr is one thing, but it's nothing compared to attending events.

--#1 on leaderboards (very long term lmao)

Side Goals:

--Do some co-casting, I've co-casted a few games before, but I would like to do it more. I'm not sure how to get started with this, so if you're an amateur (or professional, who knows ;p) caster looking for an analyst, hit me up!

--Move to another region, I've mentioned that I want to find a stable team, and I don't care in which region that is, as long as my teammates are good and dedicated, and I have a place to live. I feel like moving to another region would not only be good for me as player, but also as a person (Black^ spoke highly of this).

--Make an in-depth guide for aspiring pro-players, covering a wide range of subjects, from in-game stuff to how to get to meet the right people, and from hero specific stuff to having a proper diet. However I won't do this in the near future for a few reasons. First of all, I am not a pro yet, and even though I've already learned a ton about this subject, I would rather wait a bit, for me to get more established. Secondly, it would take a lot of time that I cannot afford to spare, since I would want to put in a ton of effort to make sure it's done properly. Lastly, I would want to find sponsors for this, since It would take a monumental amount of time and research.

Thanks everyone so much for the continued support! If you have any questions, feel free to ask away. And as always, be sure to check out my Twitch, Facebook, and Twitter!

A 7.07 guide on when to pick Pudge

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 08:11 PM PST

Does the enemy team have squishy heroes that rely on magical damage?

Pick Pudge.

Does the enemy team have a direct, or multiple direct counters to you?

Pick Pudge.

Pudge hasn't been picked?

Pick Pudge.

Does your team need literally anything but a Pudge?

Pick Pudge.

By picking Pudge, will you have a minimal impact due to the heroes both picked by your team and the enemy team?

Pick Pudge.

This has been a 7.07 guide on when to pick Pudge. Thanks.

Real life tragedy can happen at any time, even during Dota

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:50 PM PST

Last night before bed I usually play a couple of matches of ranked and every once in a while I have a few groups of guys on my friends list that invite me on discord to play if they need to have an open spot filled. I don't know them in real life but we laugh, communicate and usually have a solid time whenever they need me to play instead of their main friends.

In the middle of the match one of our teammates said he would be right back so the constant pausing by us and unpausing by the other team ensues with the typical trash talk that we all have grown accustomed too when a pause drags on. His absence grew to a weird amount and we became quite anxious as our lead started to slip away.

He returned to his mic as a barrage of allegations were sent at him as to for why he was gone for so long and why he asked us if one of us could take over his hero disruptive. He then answered in a sullen voice that his wife had a miscarriage and he couldn't continue the match.

To hear of such a horrific tragedy from someone in real time that I've never known personally really struck my heart and reminded me that even though video games are escapism for many users, real life can come at you at any moment. I feel terrible for this person I've only known as a steam username and I hope his wife and family will be able to recover from the loss of a child. I hope this story will motivate everyone to treat people in Dota a lil bit better since you have no idea what they are going through or what can happen to them in a moments notice.

Edit: Hey it's great to see people being able to open up about hard topics that have happened in their lives. As a community that is interested in dota it's only right that we can care and show support for people we know and strangers online if something happens big or small.

Should we have a "teach and learn" co-op que so vets can teach noobs?

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 10:15 PM PST

/u/plegus got me thinking from his comment: "Every now and then (like a game a week) I q into coop bot match and try to explain the game to a complete newbie. I usually pick support and help that guy. Dude it feels like charity. I also have fun at the end hack and slashing bots."

I think it would be nice to have a que search vs bots(not coaching) and vets teach new players about dota. It would still be a 10 player que. 5 teachers and 5 new players. During the pick phase, the 5 new players will select first. After, the the teachers will have a chance to pick one of those heros the new player selects and do 1on1 coaching.

There could be two directories for search que teach/learn.

Teachers:

-Can have the ability to control heros so once a hero is controlled by the teacher; learners can see the teachers mouse movement(different animated colour mouse icon) live. This along with a mic or keyboard instructions would make things clear for the new players.

-Have a trophy system (3,5,10 games) reward us for helping.

Learners:

-For new players (I'm new to dota selection box) Have this game mode search que CLEARLY VISIBLE.

-Can have the option for co-op hero movement or select off.

-Can have the option so only they can hear their teachers mic or text chat.

I think this would be nice because this will give an option to give back to the game most of us love or really hate. Are you a toxic scumbag? Teaching can be the new LP "teach 5 games".

*11k hours still a trash noob

Monkey King can safely use Meteor Hammer whilst perched in a tree.

Posted: 09 Jan 2018 12:44 AM PST

I haven't seen anyone talk about this before, but you can safely use this item on towers with next to no repercussions. Enemies can't even see you on the minimap and yet you get to damage their structures.

If you see an enemy teleporting in you can quickly get the hammer off on them and drop down and destroy them.

Here's a picture of the bots desperately trying to defend their tower lol bless them.
