Game Director Christopher Barrett:

Hey, everyone. At the end of last year, I made a promise that I would update you on our plans for Destiny 2. The team has been hard at work and we're ready to share where we are headed. We used to wait to talk about game updates until we were certain we could meet our deadlines to avoid letting players down if we changed our plans. No longer. We're not just listening, we are doing. Please keep in mind that the further out we make promises, the more they are subject to change. With that caveat, here are our plans.

Destiny Content Categories One thing we want is to set clearer expectations for is which categories of content are available to everyone each Season, and which are exclusive to Destiny 2 Expansions:

Expansions are purchasable updates that typically add new Story, Destinations, and Gear, as well as new Crucible, Strike, and Raid Lair content.

Seasons introduce content that is made available to all players of Destiny 2, at no additional cost.

Image Link

Iron Banner, Faction Rallies, and their rewards will be available to everyone as part of Season 2. Additionally, going forward we are making a change that new Seasonal rewards from Crucible, Strikes, and Trials of the Nine will be available to all players.

Faction Rallies returns on January 16 and Iron Banner will be back in the rotation on January 30.

Eververse

We recognize that the scales are tipped too far towards Tess at the moment, and Eververse was never intended to be a substitute for end game content and rewards. So, we'll be making three changes for upcoming Seasons:

  • We're shifting the balance of new content in favor of activity rewards over Bright Engrams. This includes adding Ghosts, Sparrows, and ships (to date found only in Bright Engrams) to achievement reward pools.

  • We'll provide a gameplay path to earn Bright Engrams and all contained rewards (including Event Engrams).

  • We'll give players more direct purchase options and make adjustments to Bright Engrams to allow players to get the items they want more often.

We've begun implementing these changes for the Crimson Days event beginning February 13 (with even more changes on the way in Season 3):

  • Completing Nightfall, Raid, and Crimson Days milestones during Crimson Days will reward you an exclusive Legendary Emote, Weapon Skin, and Exotic Sparrow, respectively.

  • Players will earn double engrams at level-up: one Crimson Engram and one Illuminated Engram for the duration of the event.

  • Crimson Engrams can also drop from completing the Crimson Days match and from completing the Crimson Days milestone on each character.

  • Each Crimson Engram is very strongly weighted to new rewards when decrypted until all new event items have been obtained.

XP Rates

We are still investigating changes to XP earn rates. Our goal with any updates to XP are transparency and consistent XP gain regardless of your preferred activity. Right now, it's too slow in general and lopsided towards grinding specific activities (which is not a fun grind) and we want to fix that without making those activities low value to players who aren't grinding them (fairness is cool). Our first attempt turned out to be unworkably buggy so we're having to investigate other angles. We will continue to update you as we move forward.

Feature Roadmap

There are three releases that we want to put on your radar right now. Later releases will get more specific dates as they get closer.

The following content and features will be available to all D2 players, regardless of expansion ownership.

## January 30 Update

  • Masterwork Armor

    • We are expanding the Masterwork system to include armor.
    • Masterwork Armor provides increased damage reduction while using your Super.
    • You can reroll the armor stat type on Masterwork Armor, and similar to Masterwork weapons, you can upgrade a piece of armor to Masterwork by spending Masterwork Cores and Legendary Shards. >Image Link >
  • Raid Reward Rework

    • We are updating Raid rewards to make them more unique and interesting. They will now feature mods with Raid-specific perks, and we are adjusting the rewards to ensure a Raid item drops from each major encounter. The Raid vendor will also directly sell Leviathan and Eater of Worlds armor and weapons for purchase with Raid tokens and Legendary Shards.
    • We are also adding a new Ghost with Raid-specific perks that has a chance to drop from the Leviathan and Eater of Worlds final encounters. We intend to return to creating more Raid and other activity-unique rewards in the future.

## February Update

  • Strike Scoring + High Score Tracking

    • Strike Scoring is coming to Nightfall and replacing the current time limit mechanic. The scoring is similar to the Destiny 1 system but with adjustments to emphasize competitive execution of Strike objectives and support for player selectable score modifiers. In February, Nightfall High Scores will be exposed in-game via new emblems and will unlock rewards. We also have plans for Clan and Community High Scores in the works.
  • Mods 2.0

    • Work is underway on a full rework of armor and weapon mods. This will focus on reducing redundant mods, more unique theming, and greatly increasing their impact on your power. We are aiming for a February release, but the scope of the rework could push parts or all of it out to early spring. We will be evaluating how Mods play into the Bright Engram economy as a result, because we're sensitive to pay-to-win outcomes.
  • Quickplay Improvements

    • We are adjusting game mode rules to increase the pace of gameplay and power ammo acquisition in Quickplay.
  • PC Tower Chat

    • We are adding text chat to the Tower for the PC version of the game.
  • Exotic Repetition Reduction

    • This will prevent players from receiving the same Exotic twice in a row. You may still receive duplicates, just not consecutively.
  • Fireteam Members on Destination Map

    • You will finally be able to see the other members of your fireteam on the destination map. No more having to ask your fireteam where they went when they fast travel to another landing zone.

## Spring 2018 We're taking the time we need in development of Expansion 2 that will allow us to react to player feedback from Curse of Osiris. In the coming months, we'll talk to you more about what you can expect to find in Destiny 2's next story. The team is eager to show you what they've been working on.

Independent of Expansion 2, the team will deliver a number of new features that will be released before or during Season 3. Every player of Destiny 2 will receive new content in the following categories…

Crucible We want to give players new reasons to play, more variety, and balance improvements. Spring will bring a number of exciting and long awaited features to the Crucible.

  • Crucible Rank

    • Beginning with Season 3 we will introduce Seasonal Crucible Ranks. There will be two different ranks for players to pursue:
    • Valor – A progression rank that goes up as you complete matches. Winning helps you move up faster, but there are no loss penalties.
    • Glory – A progression rank that goes up when you win and down when you lose. Performance is how you move up here. >Image Link >
      >
  • Private Matches

    • Private Matches are coming to all players of Destiny 2. Players will be able to invite their friends to play on the map and mode of their choosing. >Image Link
      >
  • 6v6 Playlist

    • We're bringing 6v6 PvP to Destiny 2 in addition to the current 4v4 game modes.
  • Mayhem Event

    • Mayhem will return as a limited-time event during Season 3 and going forward.
  • Additional Fixes

    • We are making some changes to make quitting less common and behind-the-scenes security improvements to help improve the overall Crucible experience. **** Additional Highlights
  • Weapon and Ability Balance Pass

    • Sandbox adjustments based on player feedback and data from the live game. The Sandbox team will share specific changes as we lead up to Season 3.
  • Exotic Weapon and Armor Balance Pass

    • Exotic weapons and armor are receiving a comprehensive design pass to ensure they stand out from the rest of the gear and offer new, exciting, powerful ways to play.
  • Seasonal Reputation

    • Specific vendors will now display a Seasonal ranking. Earning reputation will unlock unique Seasonal rewards and will reset each Season.
  • Improved Iron Banner and Faction Rallies

    • In addition to the changes that you will see when Iron Banner and Faction Rallies return this month, we will continue iterating on these to make them unique, exciting experiences that you all look forward to.
  • Playlist Repetition Reduction

    • This feature solves the problem of experiencing the same playlist entry multiple times in consecutive or frequent succession for both Crucible and Strikes.
  • End Game Player Pursuits

    • We agree with your feedback on the imbalance between Achievement and Bright Engram rewards, and we will be making adjustments to shift more rewards into specific endgame pursuits instead of generic XP grinding for Bright Engrams. We are excited to share the details as soon as we have them worked out.
  • Multi-Emote

    • When multi-emote launches, you will be able to choose which emote you have equipped to each of your four emote slots.
  • Vault space

    • We are targeting an additional 50 slots to player vaults. We don't believe just adding more space is a complete solution and are actively working on other changes to reduce load on your vault space.
    • We are adding an Exotic accessory tab to Vault collections so you will no longer need to spend Vault space on Exotic Ships, Sparrows, and Ghosts.
  • PC Clan Chat

    • In addition to the Tower chat that is targeted for February, we are adding clan chat to the PC version of the game.
  • Heroic Strike Changes

    • We'll be introducing modifiers to add more gameplay variety to the experience. ## Fall 2018 (or sooner) We are working on a lot more that we're not quite ready to discuss. Expect more on this small sample of items in the future:
  • Item Collections and Records

  • Weapon Slot and Archetype Improvements

  • Additional Crucible Playlists (e.g. Rumble)

  • Better Clan Rewards

  • Masterwork Exotics

  • Pinnacle Weapon and Gear Improvements

  • Trials of the Nine improvements

  • Shaders and dismantling

  • The Future of Guided Games

  • Address Solo Vs Fireteam matching

One Final Note Expect to hear more from us via Bungie.net, Twitch, and social media. We'll be talking to you more directly, and more often, as promised. We want to thank our community for all the passionate and detailed feedback you provide. It's critical to our ability to continually improve Destiny, so thank you!

Talk to you soon,

500,000 Guardians Strong!

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 04:15 PM PST

Greetings Guardians!

Welcome to the new year, we hope you're all having a wonderful time so far.

2017 was an amazing year for games and let's hope 2018 continues the trend. It's been just over a year since we made our post about hitting 300,000 subscribers, but we're happy to say that we've reached 500,000 Guardians manning the wall of our own Tower!

We like to do retrospectives during these milestones, so wanted to take a look at the stats, and see how the community on this subreddit is growing!

  • This subreddit was created by /u/Cozmo23 on Wednesday, the 5th of December, 2012, right after the announcement of Destiny.
  • We hit 10,000 subscribers on the 19th of January, 2014
  • We hit 50,000 subscribers on 8th of September, 2014 (the day before Destiny vanilla launched)
  • We hit 100,000 subscribers on the 24th of September, 2014.
  • We hit 200,000 subscribers on the 7th of September, 2015
  • We hit 300,000 subscribers on the 7th of January, 2017
  • We hit 400,000 subscribers on the 12th of September, 2017
  • And that brings us to the big half mil, 500,000 subscribers on 11th of January, 2018

Some other stats we want to share about the end of 2017 and the traffic we experienced:

Lastly, we did some snooping and found the three oldest posts on our subreddit, if you're in these posts, you've been here since the beginning:

State of the Game aside, it's important for any community to sometimes take a step back and look at this strange, weird thing called Destiny that brings so many people together. Yes we get rowdy, and yes we're vocal, but its out of the passion we share for the game and the community.

We know we're a niche, a small splinter of the overall community, but we view this subreddit as the the voice for the hardcore player, the player who cares enough to seek out Destiny's secrets, the player who looks forward to running a group of newbies through the raid, the player who wants Destiny to be the best it can be.

We hope to keep serving you (and the other 499,999 of you out there) to the best of our ability. As long as Destiny is a thing, /r/DestinyTheGame will be here.

So thanks,

From our humble Mod team <3

Bungie, it's about the loot. Period.

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 06:03 AM PST

The biggest thing missing from yesterday's update, to me, was that there's still no answer to

How can my second, third, and tenth Better Devils hand cannon be interesting? That's a question we should be asking and answering as quickly as we can," -Luke Smith

Without that fundamental question answered, this game is still going to feel like shit to play. We're going to get flooded with blue and purple loot that is well below our current light level. We're going to fill up our mailbox with it. We're going to shift our inventory around to make room to remove it from the mailbox. Then we're going to dismantle it immediately, into weapon parts to use at the gunsmith... TO GET THE EXACT SAME GUNS.

The fundamental problem with Destiny is simple: the prizes suck. The loot is shit in every aspect of this game, and there is absolute no chase to be had. Nothing to desire.

The static affixes on the guns: suck. I can't tell you what any of them are, they're so bad and unimpactful. I can't honestly tell you I feel ANY difference between Uriel's Gift and Positive Outlook. Are they really that different? They feel pretty much the same. Shrug. Who gives a shit. Neither one of them makes me go "hell yeah!"

The grinding for the CoO vex guns was cool, but guess what?! They all suck, too! No idea what special perk any of those have either! They look cool, but they feel like the exact same gun as the others.

Theres a fast, medium, and slow version of each gun type. That's all I know. That's all I've bothered registering because the affixes feel SOOOOOOO boring.

Nothing yesterday addressed any of this. Mods 2.0 might, but what I learned from the post is YOU STILL HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO IMPLEMENT MODS. You actually thought that the current mod system was good, and had no plans to improve it until the community revolted on this game.

You've made a game with zero aspiration. Nothing to strive for. Nothing yesterday changes that. Diablo 3 refound it's footing when it starting making you powerful. When it realized that players want their avatars to be empowered characters. Big numbers. Gear synergy. Diverse gameplay styles from the gear. NOTHING in Destiny 2 comes close to that. It's all primary fire and rockets. It's lame. It's frustrating. And the game is going to die because of it.

Nothing listed yesterday "changes the game up." It doesn't give people a reason to go "hmmm, let me check this out..." And that really sucks.

To Jon Weisnewski and the Sandbox/Gameplay Team

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 07:50 AM PST

Hey buds. I hope this message finds you all well. I cannot imagine what your professional lives are like right now, however I hope that if it's bleeding over into your personal lives that it's within a healthy measure. While this game means a lot to me and you and countless others, I do think it's important that we all remember that it's just a game.

There has only been one other game I have loved as much as I loved Destiny. The other also happens to be a Bungie title: Halo 2. I look back and cherish Halo 2 because it was my and many others first time ever really experiencing an online game. As a kid at the time with only access to a console, it was absolutely revolutionary. I was 13 years old, losing in Team Slayer, being told I sucked by my some random teammate and getting taunted via proximity chat by the other team, and I was in love. It was the first time I seriously invested in a game and felt myself progressing as a player as I climbed the ranks and experienced the community. A truly special community, one that was forged in all experiencing something NEW. It was creative, and skilled, supporting, demanding, and at times it would flame the hell out of you. It never stopped being special though. I cannot put into words just how positive of an experience that game was to me. I still remember Middy FFA's with no score limit, playing for hours in the same game. I was truly grieved when the servers were shut down in 2010, even though I understand that all good things must come to an end. I never thought that experience would ever be replicated, that I had gotten to be a part of something that could truly never be recreated. That was until I played Destiny.

Destiny was just pure magic, man. A truly potent concoction of many incredible pieces. The loot, the raiding, the progression, the community around the game, so many things that were just like a pure shot of fun. While it obviously took time to get to certain things and maybe some part was lacking or whatever, I still look back at Destiny as the only game that has ever taken the place Halo 2 left in my love for gaming. It has given me friends from beyond the game and was fun essentially every time I turned it on. Thank you all for the part that you played to make it so. I am truly grateful to you.

While both Destiny and Halo 2 had many things that made them amazing, at the core, at the very base, why I loved them is because it was fun to take my gun, aim, and shoot. The amount of shots to kill an enemy, whether player or AI, was right. The amount of damage I took in return, was right. The way I could move and jump and slide and glide were all right. And what was crazy is that I could swap guns, do it all again, and it still felt just right. I could repeat, and repeat, and repeat again because it all felt just right.

All that brings me to Destiny 2. I haven't played Destiny in about 3 weeks at this time. I bought it and the season pass on Xbox on launch night, played there until the PC launch, and then bought the game and season pass again on PC. It's important to me that you know I don't feel shaken down or robbed like I'm sure many of your Twitter mentions claim to have been. Though I don't dismiss those who do, because while I don't feel robbed, it's hard to describe the level of disappointment I feel toward this game.

Now I don't mean to sound harsh or critical, and realize may even sound confusing considering I purchased the game twice. I realize that I fall into a strange demographic of community members, of people who think about the game often but have come to find that I rarely play it. I check Twitter, I read this Reddit, I listen to podcasts, and absorb all the info I can from you all about the game, yet I do not actually see the screen that has "Destiny 2" on it. I have come to find that all of the things about Destiny 1 that I loved (the lore, and community, and Crucible, and raids, along with countless other stuff) are there (though some others will argue they aren't or are dwindling) but sadly the game is not fun enough to repeat them. Destiny 1 was able to have us repeat the same thing over and over again because it was just a more fun game.

I really want to emphasize that while I'm expressing a deep disappointment and saying things that are pretty negative, I'm not angry with you guys or anything. You made a decision, and I don't like it. It doesn't mean I don't like you. I know in the wave of things being said about the game it can be easily misconstrued, which is why I am making such a point to be as clear as possible. I am for you and hope you change your minds about this direction of the game.

This is the part of posts like this that normally tell you how to fix the shit and all that, but my honest answer is that I do not have a hint of game design within me. I work in heating and air conditioning, not really related fields. However, one thing I do know from my occupation is that people don't really give a damn about the minutia of how we correct their problems, as long as they are corrected. And while I empathize with your predicament of trying to please a community with many different goals and considerations of what is most important to Destiny, I will also say I selfishly hope for some serious changes are made to make the gameplay more fun.

I can't even imagine trying to work on something that will be experienced by millions of people and the level of stress and criticism that comes with that role. I think it would benefit the community to remember that the majority of themselves would despise having to work under such a microscope. Not that it excuses the poor decision making, but it would help in our ability to express criticism without all the emotional elements that take things too far. However, as someone who is deeply disappointed in this game, I understand that it can be hard to take the emotion out. Newsk and team, it would probably benefit you to have skin made of iron. Not that I'm saying you are thin skinned now (I think that is one of the most unfair criticisms aimed at you guys) but that you need to be unbreakable over the next little while. Is that fair to ask that of you? Probably not. Does it matter? That, I think, is something for you to ponder and come to a conclusion on.

Thank you all for working hard. I think you are people who love this game and think first and foremost about the game delivering to the fans. The decisions on sandbox have harmed the game in great ways in my opinion, but I think you all are capable to make the overhauls necessary to re energize the game.

After all, Halo 2 ended up coming back, why can't Destiny?

For Those Asking Why People are Upset In Spite of Yesterday's Update - Here's Why

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 11:46 AM PST

https://kotaku.com/and-the-destiny-merry-go-round-spins-again-1822031500

Kirk Hamilton (Senior Writer for Kotaku) did an amazing write-up on the events surrounding Destiny 2 over the last 24 Hours, and nails it when describing why people remain frustrated in spite of the two update announcements yesterday.

"Stop me if you've heard this one: In September, Bungie releases an online first-person shooter. A few months and a disappointing expansion later, the game is in trouble. Fans are mad; lots of people are quitting. Bungie vows to do better and sets about making improvements. Patient fans are eventually rewarded with a better game."

"...To many of us who were there throughout the lifespan of the first Destiny, it's also exhausting."

See the article for a full rundown on the subject, and for those who are not familiar with Kirk, he largely covered Destiny 1 over the entirety of its lifespan writing many articles and putting thousands of hours into the game. As a veteran journalist in the Video Game Industry, and someone who has spent so much time playing Destiny, I think it's safe to say he could be considered a reputable authority on this matter.

Remove Mods from Eververse rewards to unleash their full potential

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 05:03 AM PST

TL,DR: Bungie wants the impact of mods on our power to "greatly" increase. Eververse is a blocking factor that Bungie acknowledges. They should not keep mods as part of Eververse engrams as they serve no purpose cosmetically. This prevents concerns about 'pay-to-win' from hampering the potential of mods and our future power.

So I am pretty lukewarm on the dev update as I really wanted concrete information on how we would FEEL more powerful. Cool downs were my biggest priority. I was hoping masterwork armor would accomplish that (ability cool-down reduction on orb pickup for synergy with MW weapons) but it seems they're focusing masterworks on supers entirely.

However this snippet about Mods caught my attention (emphasis mine).

Mods 2.0

Work is underway on a full rework of armor and weapon mods.

They're hoping that mods will 'greatly' increase our power which is exciting to me. I know we might just finally get back the perks on armor from D1 but I'll take anything that'll get me that rush of feeling like a space wizard again. 1.5 min ability cool-downs do not make me feel empowered or different from a regular space marine.

Also, mods are more commonly available to the average player than MWs so I think it is better overall for the health of the game since the average player will be buffed. One of my major reservations about MW weapons is that it is unlikely that the people you meet in strike playlists will have MW weapons.

However, mods are part of Eververse engrams which was always odd to me as they are not cosmetic but affect power. Before, this was negligible as it was only rare mods and mod impact was largely insignificant. Buffing mods would change this by making tangible power a potential reward from Eververse. Bungie are aware of this and are looking at it.

This brings me to my biggest concern about Bungie's instincts. I would like to propose that they remove mods from Eververse rewards to curb any instinct to limit their potential because of 'pay-to-win'. They seem to have recognized the damage that Eververse has done so I hope they don't let it hamper their attempts to buff the sandbox.

Help me understand this sub.

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 03:46 AM PST

No rant thread just genuine question

After recently posted update I expected people will look at least little more positive into future,oh how wrong I was.

So lot of cynical post appear at top of Dev Update thread, lot of rants and criticism. What I don't understand is, why ? I mean let me list it:

  • People wanted features from D1 back, they said they will be back in Dev Update
  • People say those changes should be here from the start. Yes they should but they weren't, talking about it non stop wont change it. In short - better later than never
  • People expect Bungie to add all those things sooner. While I also would like it to happen, be realistic here, development and implementing all those things into game take time. I thought its clear for everyone
  • People who clearly state they no longer play this game and are not even interested in playing it anymore even if its gonna be fixed are heavily up-voted here, I don't care about karma ... its reddit in the end but just tell me, why? Why people cant objectively treat people who have different opinion and have civil conversation.

It becoming really pointless to share you own point of view about this game, its scary to be positive here. Yes I agree game is in poor state right now, Yes I agree game should be like what they promised from the start but if I say " I have fun playing Destiny 2 " this sub treat it like offense and attack me for my enjoyment.

In the end its just pointless thread but had to throw it off my chest as I believe I share same passion for this game as many people here, even those who criticize it heavily but I feel this sub recently is no more about passion for this game but about hate for this game and Bungie.

Edit: Sorry for this late addition but people were asking me so I want to point that I did not played Destiny 1. While I understand people are mad that features that were available in Destiny 1 will be added to Destiny 2 and it will take so much time for it, what I dont understand people were asking for it now they are mad about it now when its coming back. Why ?

Bungie plz remove juggler from the game.

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 11:19 AM PST

So I was grinding out public events last night running a hand cannon primary and Coldheart energy. You would think that as the enemies are killed during the event there would be enough primary ammo on the ground that you would pick it up as you run around. Well that wasn't the case, more often than not I would run out of primary. Stop to look for some ammo and all I see are green and purple ammo bricks on the ground. That happened a lot last night. I know people have been debating about the existence of juggler and someone tried to test it. All I know is something is going on preventing ammo from dropping with my equipped weapon and its frustrating.

Forget faction rallies, what we really need is gun rallies

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 02:00 AM PST

It's killing season and the gun companies have taken over the tower.

Hakke, Suros, Omolon, and the others I always forget have sent their reps to the tower with their latest and greatest experimental guns. And they need our help testing them against the enemy.

These guns are mega and are all OP as hell, there's HMGs, dual wielding sidearms, rapid fire rocket launchers that melt EVERYTHING....but limited time for the duration of the event only. To thank us for our service each rep has special stock to sell as well as an exclusive weapon from the manufacturer who gets the most kills from their weapons.

Rotate it with faction rallies. Tell the team who design guns to go mad and break the sandbox. It will be fun.

Since ghosts will be added to the raids, please make the world eater ghost look like a vex cranium

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 04:58 AM PST

That would be a truly unique ghost shell. Or maybe a design inspired by Gorgons from VoG. That would be a nice throwback.

My friend Noctis thought of this suggestion so here's a shoutout to him as thank you. :)

Masterwork armor should reduce ability cooldowns

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 01:27 AM PST

The current supposed bonus for MW armor looks really underwhelming. So why not make it so they do something actually useful?

One of the frequent complaints I see from the community is that ability cooldowns are way too long. Weapon Masterworks helped a bit with Super generation, so I feel like in a similar vein armor Masterworks should help with our ability cooldowns.

Destiny 2 is at a Crossroads for me, a huge Destiny fan

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 05:37 AM PST

There are holes all over this, I'm sure. I'm also sure some feathers will be ruffled, and some asses chapped, but I just thought I'd "Stream of Consciousness" a post out here in light of the recent "Dev Update" post from Christopher Barrett, and the responses I've seen.

Bungie originally built Destiny (the original) for their gamers/fans. I remember the adverts and promos. I was hooked from the moment I saw the damned announcement. This from a lifelong Playstationer, having never touched Halo, but having heard it's praises sung.

Sometime before the release, some people with financial interest probably said, "Hey, this game looks awesome, I'll help bankroll it.... but, I want a way to make some of my investment back...how about instead of this huge expansive game you've planned, you break it apart and make people pay for the pieces. Why give it to them all at once?" Thus was the re-working of the story, and the unfinished quality we got at launch. Probably.

Then, further down the road, the investors said, "So, the money we're getting is good, but see, here's the thing.... people want regular updates. I don't see how we can do that without paying them from our pockets, so I have this awesome idea for you to make even more money... give them a way to get fancier looking loot, without having to earn it... you know, buy a shortcut." Thus, Tess got a new lease on life.

THEN.... D2 was born...a game built not for gamers, but for investors first. Gamers will preorder it because we wanted to relive a newer version of a game built for gamers/fans. One that, surely, would apply all of the lessons learned to it at launch. Gamers will play it because D1 ended in a pretty cool place.

Then, the release. The EverShitstorm (I wanted to say "Ever-Storm, but I can't associate Words of Radiance/Oathbringer with this game right now). Now this. . .

Look, I'm a really forgiving person. I don't have as bleak a view as many folks seem to here. I still play, but with NOWHERE near the passion as I used to in D1.

  • I don't play so much that I get the stink-eye from my wife.

  • I don't wake up in a foggy haze wondering what the hell happened the night before, only to realize I shoved the sword of a God's son right up his own ass.

  • I don't think about bringing my PS4 with me when I travel just to make sure I can do my Tuesday Nightfalls, Friday Night Raids, and Weeklong IBs.

  • I don't F5 DTG Wednesday mornings anymore to get merc's or Bacon's views on the Gunsmith's weapon rolls because he's been tokenized too.

I know what Bungie was able to accomplish with D1. They clearly have enormous potential. They've fixed things in the past, even when it looked the campsite forest was going to burn down. They've admitted to being wrong on some occasions. They gave us TTK and RoI, for crying out loud.

I'm giving them a chance. I'd pre-ordered the whatever edition, so I've got Y1's expansions already pre-purchased. I hate wasting money, so I'll stay with it until the end of Y1. BUT, my patience is not unlimited. I'm a cheap ass, so I'm not going to "throw my money at" any paid expansions until I'm thoroughly convinced games are being considered as much as (at the very least) the investors. I know this is a business, and you need to make money, but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater here, Bungie.

I am a Destiny fan. As I'd mentioned above, I was sold on the concept the moment I saw the first promo for it online. I love the gameplay. I love the supers, grenades, punching things (yes, I'm a Titan main), the power of some of the guns, the mysteries (the Black Spindle mission, the Queen), the lore, the music, the sound design, the cooperative nature of the raids.... Well, the bolded items above are missing in D2. Our Guardians have been nerfed. Some of those can be fixed. I expect them to be fixed over time. If not, you're going to have a difficult time getting any money from my in any expansion, and I sure as hell will NOT be pre-ordering D3, if it ever happens.

Edit1: Added TL;DR

Edit 2: Added TL;DR2

TL;DR: Predicted chapped asses (was not disappointed). Bungie put out a Developer update that still left the community divided. I used to play D1 a lot, and provided caricatured stories of long playing sessions. I told an anecdotal story about how D1 evolved, and how D2 was created (including a Stormlight Archive shoutout). I think Bungie can fix a lot of the problems D2 has, but not all of them. I'm not giving Bungie money until I see improvement.

TL;DR2: (thanks /u/ExoTraveler !) In summary, we want to be powerful again. In both pve and pvp, we want to make exciting, memorable plays!

Honest question - are any destiny vet even excited by the update?

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 05:27 AM PST

I feel like people that are praising this update are newer players and older vets has seen all this before. Im sure all of us here wants to see destiny makes a turn around but with these changes, just seems to little for a game thats in rough shape.

Edit 1- majority of your opinions has been honest and constructive, we can all agree we want the game to succeed. Wether your opinion was negative and or positive, it atleast gives perspective from both side and hopefully leads to meaningful changes. I appreciate us keeping this post atleast civil.

Guys, the solution to D2's woes is simple.

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 10:32 AM PST

All Bungie has to do is add 100% more Variks to Destiny 2. D1 had Variks and we all love that game. D2 doesn't have him in the game and we all hate that game. Coincidence?

I feel like the disclaimer "This should have been in D2 at launch, but" should be included and understood with regards to all discussion of the recent dev update.

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 09:07 AM PST

First of all, I will say that I very much appreciate the dev update from Chris Barrett. A lot of the items he discussed in his update are things that the community has been clamoring for since the game launched. Some items have been requested for an even longer time (emote wheel, ranked PvP, etc.) and I am happy to see them discussed and put forward.

But I want to add this: if your only feedback is "This should have been in D2 from the beginning!" and that's it, then you are contributing nothing to the conversation. You have a valid point, and it is a sentiment many in the community (including yours truly) share, but it is entirely unproductive to the conversation at this point. There is literally nothing that can be done to go back 2 years and put all the things that should have been in at launch, in at launch. To quote the three-eyed Raven from Game of Thrones, "The past is already written. The ink is dry."

That is why I think that the caveat/disclaimer "This should have been in at D2 launch, but" or "This is a feature that we had in D1, but" should be understood by all who participate in the discussion about the upcoming changes and updates to D2. Yes, many of these features were included in D1 and inexplicably not included in D2 at launch. But there are several items that Chris Barrett mentioned that are, in fact, upgrades over what we had in D1. Let's discuss that.

Strike scoring is coming back, but this time with tracking and being able to show off your score! Cool! We didn't have that in D1. Raid specific perks are coming back, but this time they will be on mods that you can put on any armor piece of your choosing! Cool! We didn't have that in D1. Etc.

This post isn't meant to silence all those for whom yesterday's dev update wasn't enough to bring you back to the game. If you are underwhelmed by the plans for the future, that is entirely your right and you should be able to say so. But say why, not just "SHOULDA BEEN IN THE GAME SINCE LAUNCH, I'M DONE". We can all agree that many of the features outlined should have been there in the first place. But they weren't, and now they're gonna be. That's exciting, and should be fun when they're implemented. Let's talk about that. Or maybe they're not gonna be fun, because of reasons x, y, and z. Let's talk about that. Or maybe they will be fun, but only if a, b, and c are implemented first. Let's talk about that. Be productive and constructive. It's clear that Bungie is listeningTM . They listen better to constructive feedback, and this update is proof of that.

I, for one, am excited to have a reason to come back to this game in a few weeks month or two.

Edit: Great conversation guys. I realize some of what I've said might rub some people -- who are justifiably upset in what D2 has been so far -- the wrong way and it may seem like I'm a Bungie apologist. I'm not, I promise. I just want to have a meaningful, constructive discussion with my favorite gaming community about my favorite gaming franchise. D2 hasn't been the game we were promised so far, but it could be. Chris Barrett's post yesterday seems to be a significant step in the right direction. But game design and development don't happen overnight. If it's too little, too late for you, that's okay.

It works well for Masterwork Weapons, but giving ALL Masterwork Armor the same intrinsic perk is a mistake

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 08:43 AM PST

Obviously the difference is that you can only use 1 weapon at a time, but you are using 4 pieces of armor at time. Even if the Masterwork armor perk stacks, it is going to be mostly useless to have the same perk on 4 different pieces of gear.

While I'm sure this has probably been mentioned among the thousands of comments in the megathread, a great change would be to give each different armor-type its own intrinsic Masterwork perk. For example..

  • Masterworked helmets - Regenerate health on orb pickup
  • Guantlets - Increase melee attack speed
  • Chestpieces could give the currently proposed "Decreased damage during super"
  • Boots could give any one of the "Increased Agility after X perks"

I think this would go a long way to making Masterwork armor actually useful rather than having the same perk on every armor piece.

Why doesn't Masterwork Armor have quicker ability recharge on orb pickup?

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 05:38 AM PST

Would that not have been better? I don't really care all that much about taking more damage in my super... PvE it's not really a problem and it feels like something solely for PvP players. I feel like it would have been better to have it boost your ability recharge rate on orb pickup or something to give it some synergy with masterwork weapons.

Some people might think that's a bit too OP where we already get supers pretty fast now because of masterworks, but I think even just class abilities being affected would make it a bit more fun.

"We’re targeting a January update to provide better incentives to complete Prestige activities"

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 06:36 AM PST

That quote is from the State of Destiny 2 post in November.

This was one of the improvements that I was looking forward to the most and I did not see anything about it in yesterdays development update.

I know they talked about the raid rewards rework, but that part did not mention anything regarding better incentives for the prestige raid, and there was nothing about better incentives for the prestige nightfall.

Please give yourself time and overthink mastery armor bungie

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 05:50 AM PST

Heya,

I think the mastery armour could have been so much more than simply more health/damage resistance during your super. What about stats that actually matter like super charging rate etc.

It seems so pointless. Or did I get it wrong?

What do you think about the upcoming mastery armour?

Can PC players please get a separate keybinding for melee and smoke grenade?

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 01:23 AM PST

I would really really really appreciate this being added to the game. I know its a super small thing, but I can't even count how many times I've wanted to melee and I've thrown a smoke grenade, or vice versa.

Just played the same team in trials 3 times in a row....are the player numbers really that bad?

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 12:59 PM PST

Luckily we beat them all 3 times....I genuinely felt bad for the kids because of how demoralizing that must have been. I messaged the top player on their team afterwards and said i was sorry and offered to help him with trials if he needed it. The player numbers must be shockingly low if I'm getting matched against the same team 3 times in a row. Anyone else experiencing this?

Why don't strike challenges include things like "get 50 kills with a sniper rifle" or "20 shotgun double kills" why is always the same stupid elemental challenge?

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 11:50 PM PST

Seriously, I never EVER see shotguns or snipers or fusion rifles online. Thanks to the new power fantasy killing 2 primary weapon system almost all other heavies besides rockets are being ignored in PvE. So why doesn't bungie try to curtail this by adding strike/planetary/ect. challenges like "Get X kills with snipers" or "Get X fusion rifle double kills". Its really annoying doing a strike and always seeing the GET VOID KILL KILLS AND ALSO KILL ENEMIES WHILE THEY ARE UNDER THE EFFECT OF YOUR VOID ABILITY.

This seems like such a common sense thing to increase play time with strange weapon archetypes (something the old weapon system allowed by having a special weapon slot).

About that PC-only text chat...

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 03:25 AM PST

I gotta say this because well, why only PC? Why not PS4 and XB1? There really isn't an excuse you wanna know why? I'll tell you why in one word and one game: Warframe.

Warframe has chat on console and it honestly works fine and to be honest for the life of me, I don't understand why other console games don't implement this. Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch and this game to name a few would benefit so much from this.

Why pray tell would I want Warframe's chat here on ye olde Console you ask?

Let's look at Warframe's chat. To do it in game you pause and press L2 the open chat on PS4, in your ship (Basically Tower without the socialness or listening the same lines by npcs "When you whisper to the void does it whisper back?")

Warframe's chat has a squad chat, a trade chat (Which D2 doesn't have so who cares?) a Clan chat (on the website but never used) a Recruiting chat (Hey D2 this is where you put an LFG instead of this guided game crap) and the region chat (Which in Warframe is pretty cringy but you can find a good time...sometimes...).

So I ask why not put these into Destiny 2? For all platforms, in all spaces not just the tower. If Warframe can do this then why not Destiny 2? Why not all these popular games on Console too, because quite frankly there isn't any excuse left that it cannot be done because Warframe's existence says otherwise.

There are other things Destiny should be taking out of Warframe's book but I think it light of the recent changes said. I think this is one that can benefit all and you can really do no wrong with it. Even just Squad chat, Recruiting and Region are fine.

Thank you and good night!

Sandbox Updates Pace

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 09:08 AM PST

Are seasonal sandbox updates too slow of a pace for Destiny?

Honestly, I would like to see monthly balance updates. Go faster, if something gets messed up with a change - it will be adjusted quickly. It'll keep the crucible fresher.

The changes may not be perfect and some changes may just be flat out bad - but with quick and constant changes will still be better than a stale, conservative changes.
