Survivors: Let's talk about the basement...

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 05:09 AM PST

I see a lot of survivors die or lose matches due to bad basement plays.

Here's what you need to know about the basement:

  1. When you close that basement chest mid-search, the killer gets a visual indicator similar to the one from the generators. You need to finish searching it or don't open it to avoid detection. If the killer is close enough, he/she will also be able to hear you rummaging through the chest.

  2. The basement can appear in one of two places on each map (with a couple of exceptions where there's only one spot). Find out where it is and run any direction that is away from it when being chased. You are much harder to save if you are hooked in the basement.

  3. Some killers can one-shot you: Leatherface, Michael Myers in Tier 3, Huntress with her add-on, etc. If you are facing one of these, do not go for the basement save unless you see someone else getting chased/hit. They want you to go for the save. Don't. Work on generators and only when it is safe should you try to save someone. Yes, I realize you could save that one person, but you can lose the match for everyone by trying and failing.

  4. If 3 survivors are either dead or hooked in the basement, do not get angry if the 4th survivor chooses not to join that cluster. You probably ignored some of the advice above, and look at this way, if that 4th survivor escapes, they have denied the killer a 4-kill. That is a win for the team.

  5. If you are near the basement and you think someone is going to be carried there, you might be able to walk down and hide in one of the lockers before the killer gets there, but that is risky. They could find you. The huntress will always reload her hatchets from the lockers after hooking. I've done this play successfully, but understand that it is risky and you need to assess the state of the trial before attempting it. Definitely do not unhook the person until the heartbeat is at a distance.

  6. If the basement is in the shack, do not drop the pallet there unless you absolutely have to. That pallet might help someone save you.

  7. If someone unhooks you with borrowed time (your screen goes black and white), you have to heal up before the progress bar under your player icon runs out. If you can't, you might hide in a locker to avoid being spotted on the ground by the killer. The survivors will still be able to see you (and hopefully come heal you). If the killer doesn't have a perk to find you (Whispers, etc.), it might just buy the team time.

  8. Assume that every killer is running the Barbecue & Chili perk until you have proof otherwise (since almost every killer runs it these days). Use it to your advantage. Walk one way for 4 seconds and then go another. Or get close to the hooked survivor so that you are out-of-range. But, whatever you do, consider not being altruistic immediately. Too many matches result in camping because everyone rushes the hook and the killer will not leave because he/she knows that everyone is nearby. Give it a few seconds. Unless the person is on their last hook, you've got time on your side.

  9. Beware of the Insidious perk on killers. With it equipped, killers can stand and have a terror radius of 0, so the killer may still be in that basement. Hooked survivors who flail by lightly hitting the attempt escape button can signal a camping killer.

  10. If a survivor is hooked in the basement when the exit gates are open, ONLY consider a save if you have Borrowed Time or hear the heartbeat go away from there. This is especially true if no one has died during the trial because the killer will want to secure at least one kill.

  11. If the killer has a one-hit option, do NOT heal in the basement. Run ASAP. Heal elsewhere.

  12. The uninjured survivor should run in front of the injured one to block and take a hit if needed. If the killer ends up behind the survivors, then the uninjured should get between the killer and the injured.

  13. Basements near exit gates can be especially problematic. See tip 10.

Any other basement tips?

Good luck and have fun out there!

What are the 4 'Ting' sounds that are sometimes heard at the start of a trial ?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 10:34 AM PST

I've heard this a few times lately. It isn't wraiths bell. Maybe it's linked to survivors perks, but really not sure. Forgive me if it is really obvious but i can't find the answer anywhere. Happy New Year!

Killer messaged my wife when she was the last survivor after she finished one of the last two generators. He offered the hatch and said "meet in the middle of the map." (We have had other killers do this and stay true to their word because they have class and want to end the game). He proceeded to lead her for about 15 seconds like he was taking her to the hatch, turn around and down her (it was billy) and use a mori to kill her. Is this person human garbage? (I'd consider it cheating because he knew he was going to lose and purposely manipulated the game by sending messages through Xbox - he reached out to her initially. She was happy to win fair and square but figured it would be nice to save them both time).

Thoughts on SWF?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 09:24 AM PST

Hi all, been playing this game for several hundred hours now. When I first bought the game, lots of things appealed to me, especially as a survivor. The idea of venturing into an unknown map, with survivors you don't know, trying to work together towards a common goal while avoiding getting caught by the killer seemed amazing. The fact that you don't know what (clutch, like Borrowed Time) perks your teammates are running, what items they brought and what (clutch, like Styptic Agent) add-ons they may have makes the game so intense; you have to make split second decisions according to how your teammates play.

There are also selfish scenarios from what I imagined: survivors not distracting the killer when a teammate is getting chased in fear of ending up on the hook, or running towards teammates when they are getting chased in hopes that the killer will switch targets etc.

What appealed to me was the idea of uncertainty, and the decisions made by your teammates can lead to a perfect escape or conversely lead to everyone's demise.

When I queued solo as survivor, the gameplay was pretty much what I imagined: heroic survivors baiting the killer so others could go for saves, or selfish survivors getting you off the hook even within terror radius just so he could farm points. Naturally, we'd all get a little upset at the latter but in a game like this, I saw it coming. It's not very nice to be the one farmed, but the whole idea of uncertainty of your teammates is what makes the game fun.

When I queue as killer however, I get matched against survivors who are friends with each other. Naturally, majority of them have communication tools outside of the game. Their actions are so perfectly executed there is almost no way it can be possible without such help.

Right from the start of the game, they already know what perks and items everyone else is running. The moment I find a survivor, all 4 of them know which killer I'm running. At this point Myers lost his element of surprise if he's trying EW1 build, and traps from Hag and Trapper are almost useless since the moment one survivor finds it, everyone knows EXACTLY where it is. One minute into a chase and all of them can already make an educated guess what add-on's and perks I'm running.

The moment someone goes down, 1 or 2 of them are already in the vicinity, waiting to blind me when I pick him up, or heal him if I decide to slug. If I'm lucky enough to find a wall to avoid the flashlight, they rotate body blocks so there's no way I can make it to a hook in time.

With all these tools at their disposal, usually all 5 gens are done by the time I get someone on the first hook. At this point there is no point for me to leave the hook, so I patrol, and guess what? Someone with Borrowed Time comes in for the save, and again, the others rotate between body blocking and blinding me so the one on hook gets away.

I figured there's no point chasing them since their actions are so perfectly coordinated, so I just went afk in the basement while waiting for them to leave. 15 minutes later all 4 of them are still in game. I had to walk to the exit gate to watch them spamming crouch before they'd leave.

I've had enough of such games. I leave the lobby the moment 3 or more survivors show up at the same time, or I leave the game once it starts. There is absolutely no point in playing against SWF when they have communication tools which essentially gives all of them a permanent Bond/Empathy/Kindred/Wake Up! that works regardless of survivors' status, a Dark Sense/Premonition/Spine Chill/Alert for as long as just ONE survivor sees the killer, pseudo permanent Deja Vu, being able to efficiently utilize Streetwise/Leader/Prove Thyself, and knowing exactly when to pop the last generator for Adrenaline.

I'm not complaining how OP flashlights or Borrowed Time/Decisive Strike; I think they are perfectly fine. Flashlights require you to be at the right place at the right time, and single use perks are supposed to be clutch since you have one less perk the entire game after using it.

I have a question for killers AND survivors, especially those who play with friends: do you think it is fair playing the game with communication tools?

I was supposed to 'let go'?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:45 AM PST

I'm pretty new to the game, picked it up during the sale and enjoying it. I was playing the doctor for the first time, and got a four kill, but in the post game chat, I was told I was supposed to let the last go? What does that mean? I just put him in the bottom hooks and he got pretty upset about it, I guess.

About Blood Warden...

Can we have a notification timer just like how Adrenaline works at the bottom right of your screen when it's active for that 60 seconds?

It would really help the killer to gauge if they can look for another survivor and decide pursuing them or not.
