Tsu's Blog - Overseas Tournaments

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 03:41 PM PST

Hello, it's me, the guy that used to translate JP Smasher's blog posts. I don't have the time or will to translate Earth's much since they are long as heck(although I do read through most of them), but here's Tsu talking to Japanese players on going overseas for tournaments on his new blog.

Google Doc link

I still keep it on Docs for archive purposes(and it's easier to format), but I'll copy and paste the contents for reddit too. Note that I didn't reformat it to fit reddit or anything, so it might be messy.

Original blog post: Tsu is the best!? Translator /u/ktrbotmc @ktrbotmc

It's Christmas today. Last night was full of excitement, huh?

There's only 6 days left in the year, and there have been a lot of stuff that has happened in the past year.

A lot of pros sprung up from games not only in Smash, but other games, and I feel like e-sports has grown a lot in many aspects this year.

In terms of Smash, this is the year overseas tournaments have become a lot more commonplace for me. Invites to Frostbite, Civil War, EVO, and 2GGC-SAGAs lead to to a lot of Japanese players being able to travel.

I would like to quickly thank Vayseth(@Vayseth_) and Pereden(@perepereden), as well as all of the other supporters who have bridged the gap between Japan and America, and made it a comfortable experience. Really, thank you so much.

In this post, I would like to talk about the pros as well as some warnings about foreign tournaments.

They get hype!

Foreign tournaments are substantially louder than Japanese ones. The crowd is looking for upsets, and if one happens, they get extremely hyped. When ZeRo lost at Civil War, eSports Arena was shaking. Literally.

Another example is whenever T played during Civil War. Whenever Link's up smash would connect, the crowd would shout "Ay Ay Ayyyy". I want this to happen in Japan too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4H86_ht8r0

It's not always something you want, though. In this Tsu vs Zenyou match, the home crowd cheers for Zenyou were insane, and I had to play an away game. If you go in with the mentality like "I came all the way across the ocean so I'll get cheered, right?", then you will be in for a surprise, so be prepared for that as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrkcEEjoPKU

You can Money Match!

In Japan, it's illegal because of gambling laws, but it's legal over there(probably). You'll get asked to money match as often as you get challenged to battles in the Pokemon games. I'm a coward, so I don't do them very often, but some Japanese players, who I will not mention their name, have made lots of money off of it. If you have the guts to do it, go for it.

The Plane Ride is long and Boring! The U.S. is far. It generally takes 10~12 hours in the plane(this is for the west coast). Of course, there's no wifi, so make sure to bring something to kill time.

A little off topic, but for Leo Saga, I played a visual novel called Raging Loop with Kirihara-san, and 10 hours passed by like it was nothing. It was looping novel, kind of like a mix of Higurashi and Danganronpa. I recommend it, but you also won't be able to sleep, so be careful.

Study English a Little Bit! You can get by in terms of English by relying on Vayseth-sama and Pereden-sama, as well as the other Japanese players, but to cause the least amount of problem as possible, you should practice some basic English.

What to say during immigration, and how to order at restaurants are some things you should know beforehand. It's stuff you learn during middle school, but you forget a surprising amount of it, so make sure to review.

Learn some Smash related English as well. During stage selection, they will first ask "smashville?" If you say "no", you will start stage striking. The names of the stages are below. Final Destination(FD): 終点 Battlefield: 戦場 Smashville: スマ村 Town and City: 村と町 Lylat: ライラット

Also, American players will talk to you a lot. Japanese people are rare so sometimes they ask for autographs, ask to play you, and ask for advice after a match.

To be able to answer, you need at least a decent understanding of English, as well as some knowledge about Smash related terms. I like to think I'm decent at English, but during FPS2, when I teamed with ZeRo, I struggled quite a bit. I focused more on trying to understand him than the match.

For that nanchan(@nannchan1919) gets by with just swinging his arms around and saying sorry. It amazes me. If you want to be able to hold conversations, make sure to practice English hard.

It's High Level!? "American tournaments are higher level compared to Japanese ones" is a stigma that I feel is very common. In terms of PGR, no Japanese tournaments can reach S-tier, and after tons of Japanese players from all over the country come to play, it finally reaches A-tier. The Sagas that happened monthly were A or an S, and the weekly MSM would have been an A-tier as well(MSM is not counted for PGR).

I think this is true. The level of play in the U.S. is so high, it exceeds our imagination.

However, I don't think Japanese tournaments are bad either. Apart from failing at EVO2017 and FPS2 by placing top 32, I got top 2, 8 and 8 at A-tiers, and two top 16s at S-tiers. In comparison, in Japanese tournaments ranked A and below, I placed top 48, 24, and 12 when I do well. When I do bad, I place top 64 and 96. At TAT I placed top 32. Honestly, Japanese tournaments are harder to win in, and I'm struggling.

If the players that consistently get 1 digit placements are the "top tier" players, and the players that sometimes get into 1 digit placements, and can sometimes beat the top tier players are the "mid tier" players, then I believe we have way more of them than the U.S. does.

I am one of the mid tier players, but whenever I go to the U.S., I don't feel like I'll ever lose.

The mid tier players of Japan are really good. If all of these players went overseas, then I feel like at least someone will beat the top tier players.

Finally... I really love the Japan vs Overseas matches.

A lot of the matches were fun because of the amount of Japanese players that went over this year, and were enjoyable even as a spectator.

I hope more Japanese players go overseas and show us some more hot battles. I would like to help like out wherever I can, so ask me anything.

Merry Christmas! Happy new year!

Why is Smash so looked down upon in the FGC?

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 02:14 PM PST

I realize I'm bound to get a lot of bias by asking this question here instead of somewhere else, but I don't know if there's any popular generic fighting game sub that would be a better fit for this question.

I figure a lot of you guys have probably been in the smash community for way longer than I have so you probably know how to answer this question anyways since some of you might have actually dealt with people who think this.

Anyways, here's some backstory to why I'm asking, you don't need to read any of it to actually answer, but I wanted to give some context to why this debate confuses me so much.

I'm a filthy casual who just recently got into Injustice 2 and started enjoying it a ton. I don't have PS+ so I never played online, but I'm hoping to get it soon and am really excited to actually learn a game and be competitive with it, even if I still suck. If you're unfamiliar with Injustice 2, it has this feature in single player where you can have an AI play the content for you while you just sit back and do nothing while making progress and unlocking some stuff. I've been doing that a lot lately to try and grind for something that takes a while and decided to pick up Smash 4 since my TV was occupied with Injustice 2 and I can just play Smash through my Wii U gamepad and don't need the TV.

So I started picking up smash and was going through the characters and couldn't decide who to play (still can't decide, picking a character is really hard) so I ended up finding this YouTube channel by the name of IzawSmash. He has really cool character guides and does coaching and also has this series that's meant to teach you the mechanics of smash. I decided I'm a new player so I'll take a look at it and oh my goodness it's so much stuff.

Smash has the standard fighting game mechanics. Dashing, grabbing, and blocking for example, but there's no high and low. That said you can still apparently be hit while shielded if someone gets your hitbox while the shield is small (didn't even know this before) and can tilt your shield to help prevent that, so that's kind of like high/low blocking in a way. There's also perfect shielding which is like SF parrying. There's no grab tech, but there's spot dodging, which is close enough.

Then it starts getting crazy. Right off the bat you have teching after hitting the ground, which I don't think anyone I personally know is aware of as a feature in this game. It's simple enough, though. Then turnaround neutral b, b-reversing, wave bouncing, directional influence including smash DI and vectoring, stale moves, dash dancing/foxtrotting/extended dashdancing, and I'm sure a whole bunch of other things I didn't even mention.

I've already typed a lot so I want to end it here, but my main point here is that Smash seems to have a lot of depth to it, and I'm talking about Smash 4 here. I've heard Melee has even more stuff to keep in mind. So with all that stuff that's in the game, why is Smash 4 considered so casual to people who play other fighting games?
