Past Q&A Megathreads

Known bugs (some have possibly been fixed):

See here for Niantic-recognized bugs.

  • New: Shadow-Bans If you have ever used a third-party service (such as an IV checker) that required you to log into your Pokemon Go account, and/or you have ever received a warning message about unauthorized access, you may have recently been "shadow-banned". You can still play the game like normally, but only common Pokemon will show up and you will not see "rare" spawns while others will. You will need to remove any such services, revoke their authorizations, change your password, etc. Roughly a week after doing so, people have reported the shadow-bans being lifted for legitimate players.

  • New in 0.59.1 The Pokédex displays genders for Pokémon you have caught, if applicable. However, code for genders was only added sometime in December/January. Any Pokémon caught/evolved prior to that will have a (randomly assigned?) gender in the Inventory, but will not properly display the gender in the Pokédex.

  • Sometimes while the game is loading it will get stuck on a white screen. This seems to be due to an anti-bot "Captcha" screen that didn't load correctly, and can usually be fixed by restarting the app.

  • There is a bug with the GPS not connecting properly, which results in nearby Pokémon spawns disappearing for a few minutes.

  • The game will randomly crash sometimes. Having the most updated version of the app and the most updated version of your operating system tends to minimize this, but it still happens.

  • There are graphical glitches sometimes where a Pokémon will spawn as a "miniature" version of itself. If you restart the app and are still close enough, it should reappear normally and be clickable.

  • There is a bug sometimes while battling a gym if you don't have a great connection. If you dodge an attack that would otherwise kill you, sometimes the game won't register the dodge and your Pokémon will "faint". Then the game will sync with the server and undo the damage that you dodged, but your Pokémon still shows as fainted and you can't actually attack.

  • If phone time is not set to Automatic, Incense and Lures may not work properly. Fix this by setting time to Automatic (in your phone's Time/Date settings)

Salty Sunday - Rage Rants and complaints

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 10:09 AM PST

Have you been the one missing the Mewtwo EX raidpass? Maybe you haven't been lucky the whole week and that damn raid Tyrannitar ran and everyone else caught him.

Or the worst part, maybe it's monday again?!

(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

Here we rant about everything that goes wrong, someone who sniped a gymspot ( ̄Д ̄), a missed Tyrannitar again (ಠ_ಠ) or that stupid bug which made you miss your raid because of the server desync, ending the raid prematurely (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ

No personal insults, no trolls and provocation but all salty stuff is accepted.

  • Only salty posts allowed ( ಠ_ಠ )

  • No uncivilty or personal information allowed. ☜(`o´)

  • Complaints can be posted here as well, agree that stuff needs to change here as well, like the spawn rate or gym bugs.

    (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

Don't forget to hydrate after all the salt!

[Discussion] The new weather system is a great solution to the stardust shortage

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 05:31 PM PST

For a low stardust player like me the new weather system has really solved my problem. I have never been able to power up anything to any significant level but just today I caught a high IV level 35 Machop (cloudy weather boosted) which I promptly evolved into a Machamp. Before this update I would have had to find a high IV level 30 and spend 62,000 (or more likely even lower level and spend 100k+) stardust to have the same result.

This weather system is a major buff to stardust in a fun way. Instead of just lowering stardust requirements or boosting stardust collection now we can hunt on specific weather for very high level mons to evolve.

What do you guys think about this?

[Art] I love playing but always picture those poor creatures trapped and forgotten in my dusty Pokédex. This inspired a series I painted titled ‘Pokémon Go(ne)’, I hope you all like it!

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 05:43 PM PST

95% of the sub rn is either EX raids suck or woah look the in game weather doesn't match the real weather.

We get it these features aren't the best but we don't need 30 posts a day to let us know

[Idea] EX Raids should happen just after you defeat a legendary

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 05:50 AM PST

Instead of all this planning and random picking. Just make it so that on a % of defeating a legendary raid, a super legendary notices what's happening, and you get an instant second raid there. It'd feel awesome, you already have a group there from defeating the boss, and just feels like a much better solution.

Might need to give people a free raid pass for that to work though.

Not sure this justified an extreme weather warning

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 05:01 AM PST

Extreme Weather needs to be fixed asap

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 01:09 AM PST

So I looked forward to this update and was hoping to play today to get some water/ice pokemon because the weather forecast told me it would rain/snow slightly. Well that's nothing that could prevent me from playing, right? Wrong!

So this is what the game tells me: https://imgur.com/a/B1cKJ

And this is what it actually looks like: https://imgur.com/a/jpqlv

This is not in any way dangerous or "extreme" and the temperature is around -2 degrees which is a normal winter temperature...

I mean why would they introduce weather when everything that isn't sunny is considered extreme weather?

Anyone else still waiting for EX invite?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 09:14 AM PST

They seriously need to find a better way to do these.

I usually try to do at least 1 Raid a day. I've done a total of 153 Champion Raids and 129 Legendary Raids and still haven't had a single EX Raid invite.

I know people with less then 50 raids complete that rarely play getting passes.

I'd really like to obtain one before the hype train dies off and groups get hard to find. It's getting cold, and most of the local players are starting to drop off already.

Anyone else still waiting for an EX invite?

Hit Level 40 today and did it in style

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 11:20 AM PST

I went out today to do a raid or two and after catching an Absol from one of those raids I went to a local park and noticed I was 400 xp from level 40. The gym at the park had a Gengar raid (Hex and Sludge Bomb) so I decided to solo it, and when I did I finally got to level 40! I'm pretty proud of finally getting there and it was nice to do it that way instead of a Pidgey stack or something like that. :)

[Discussion] The complete history of new PokéStops and Gyms

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 04:43 PM PST

Since it has been exactly 2 months now since many new PokéStops and Gyms disappeared, but Niantic also very recently added some new portals as PokéStops into Pokémon Go, I thought that the recent events regarding new Pokéstops or Gyms might be a bit confusing to some players.

That's why I decided to compress every bit of Info we ever got on new Stops and Gyms in the past into a single, comprehensive list for everyone.

I'll edit this post with events I've missed, if you write them in the comments.

First, the basics:

  • 2012: Niantic releases their first game, Ingress. Players are able to submit new locations into the game for the game to work.

  • These locations are called "portals" in Ingress. They are the only in-game structure in that game.

  • 2012 – 2015: All Ingress players are able to submit an infinite amount of new portals. Each and every one of these submissions is approved or denied by Niantic employees by hand.

  • Of course, the employees are not able to keep up with all the submissions, which results in a growing backlog of submissions.

  • September 2015: Niantic finally closes the feature to submit new locations entirely. Players are not able to submit new locations for the next 2 years. https://plus.google.com/+NIAOps/posts/HfrZxjvjjdU

  • Summer 2016: Niantic releases their next game: Pokémon Go.

  • This time, the locations are taken directly from Ingress. Only most portals that are too close to another portal do not get imported, as well as sponsored portals.

  • November 2016: Niantic introduces "Operation Portal Recon" (short: OPR) as an invite-only Beta feature for Ingress players level 16.

  • OPR lets players rate open submissions from the backlog with stars from 1 to 5 in multiple categories. If enough players give a certain amount of stars, the submission gets accepted and goes live as a portal. If it fails to do so, the submission gets rejected. In both cases, the player who submitted the candidate gets notified via E-Mail.

The year 2017 and the steady development of OPR:

Recent events

So Niantic has the ability to port over ingress portals as Pokéstops and Gyms, but they don't do it in one single swipe and they don't do it every day. Instead, they only did it in small areas first and then imported a very small percentage globally as a test. They are probably going to release more in a weekly, monthly or unpredictable way.

As of right now, it is not clear why they don't port over the older portals first and instead chose the newest ones that day as a test. It might have been a bug that we got new stops at all, but maybe the bug was that we did only get so few of them.

Truth is, we don't know anything about Niantics plans as of right now. But we are definitely able to conclude from this data that Niantic does in fact care about adding new locations into both of their games. They just do it very carefully and might have to do it slower than most of us would like to.

tldr; Niantic is constantly improving on adding new locations into their AR platform. Although hundreds of thousands portals are still not PokéStops or Gyms yet, it seems likely that Niantic is going to import most of them into Pokémon Go, eventually.

As a rural player, thank you, Niantic!

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 09:43 PM PST

This update has completely changed how I feel about this game. Living in south eastern KY, doing well at this game felt like a chore more than anything. With spoofing way too common in this area, it was hard to compete. I know some people have been complaining that the game is too easy now, but for people who aren't located in larger cities this update is perfect. From catching high level Pokemon, to filling up my dex, this update has been nonstop fun for me and my wife! Hope everyone else is having as much fun as we are!

Today I caught myself a 0% iv magikarp. How rare is it?

I still don't have any perfect iv Pokemon. Lvl 27

But it was just funny that I found a perfectly un-perfect one. 😂

No Pokémon ever spawn at a Pokéstop?

Posted: 10 Dec 2017 03:29 PM PST

I've lived on top of a pokestop for about 4 months now and I have never once seen a Pokémon spawn next to it. I've also never seen a Pokémon near it on the nearby tracker. Anyone know about this or have had a similar experience?
