I come from a background of old servers, back when there were many simple/vanilla servers and then a few well-done custom servers (large medieval castle worlds, that sort of stuff). There were very little and not very powerful hackers back then, and most people were new to the game, didn't know its mechanics and really played it how it was originally intended back then.

 

Servers didn't use an abundance of plugins/features stacked on top of each-other to try and be unique, but because it was a balance between chaos, griefing and peaceful invincibility, that allowed for a lot of flexible play and meta on servers- what everyone built and how people were currently interacting made every server unique. Today I find trouble finding good servers; most are a slathering of crates, kits, free stuff, staffhunters, warps, plugins and economies that permit you to basically AFK for diamonds. The servers on server lists are very often (like, >66% of the time) dishonest or not what you were trying to look for by the tag (you search "vanilla" and find these massive command-blocked servers, "survival" and find a server that is about claiming land and making money exponentially faster in an economy, "anarchy" and find it's got a lot of custom items and is "OP Anarchy", or "skyblock" and find that they're all focused on factories and billionaires rather than a cool sandbox in the sky)...

 

How do you try and enjoy multiplayer today? Do you even enjoy it?

Do you think this is just "change in players' taste", or that there are a lot of bad server owners who just copy eachother rather than ask what players want?
