Posted: 21 Dec 2017 09:00 AM PST

Welcome to the latest Thursday Teaching Thread, where you the community get to ask your questions and share your knowledge.

This is an opportunity for the more experienced HotS players here to share some of your wisdom with those with less expertise. This thread will be a weekly safehaven for those "noobish" questions you may have been too scared to ask for fear of downvotes, but also can be a great place for in depth discussion if you so wish. So, don't hold back, get your game related questions ready and post away, and hopefully someone can answer them!

If you wish to just view top level comments (ie questions) add ?depth=1 to the end of the page url. If you have any additional questions, /r/nexusnewbies is happy to help.

Hey Blizzard, What's the Deal with this Sneaky Root CA You Just Installed on My Computer?

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 10:12 AM PST

Edit 2: TO BE CLEAR THIS IS NOT A SECURITY PROBLEM. There is no escalation of privileges that I'm aware of, because Agent already gets admin privileges to install and (presumably) the private key requires Administrator/root to extract (although I could be wrong about that). The private key should also be unique on each machine (again, I could be wrong).

My complaint is a privacy issue. Why should they create a potential CA when a simple non-CA self-signed cert would work fine--they could do everything exactly the same as now, just generate the certificate with Basic Constraints CA:false and put it in the user certificate store, instead of the Root CA certificate store.

....

Original post: While running the battle.net updater for HotS this morning I got a strange prompt that Agent wanted to make changes on my computer and needed my admin password. I was immediately suspicious, so I checked Activity Monitor and noticed that the Agent process has open file handles to all the Keychain files, most notably to the System Roots Keychain, which holds all the trusted root CA certificates.

I opened Keychain and looked in the System Roots, searched for Blizzard, and sure enough, here it is. The expiration day is December 19th, and since certificates are usually generated for a certain number of years, that means it was just created.

In case you didn't know, a trusted root CA has the ability to create a certificate that is valid for any website or server and your computer won't warn you about it. The Blizzard Agent process can intercept your network traffic, create a forged certificate to allow them to decrypt the traffic, and you will never know about it.

WTF Blizzard?

....

Edit: Comparing this cert (and the slightly different version on Windows), to other CAs, I think Blizzard just installed it in the wrong key store. If this was installed in the Personal or Local Items/login keystore, it would be fine as-is.

Forts and Keeps need to be buffed

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 11:07 AM PST

Without two sources of damage, along with the minion buffs, defending an objective push is almost impossible.

The forts/keeps now have unlimited ammo, but as they're effectively firing at half the rate, it's much easier to dive forts. At very least, the tower shots should splash, and fire at a higher rate, to make that territory at least somewhat safe for defenders.

I wish Blaze had a military rank title like Sgt. Hammer and Lt. Morales have

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 11:42 AM PST

To me something like "Corp. Blaze" would sound much cooler than just Blaze. It would also be consistent with past hero names. Does anyone else feel like this? Idk, maybe I'm just weird for being upset over a thing as minor as this.

Lore of the Firebats (And what we know about Blaze)

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 02:43 PM PST

Hey all!

So for those who don't follow this series, I usually do a lore thread for StarCraft heroes, and just last week I finished up doing the ones that were already in the game. Well the week after I finished my series they bring out the new one, go figure. I debated holding off until we get to know more, but considering he seems like Hammer without too much lore too him I'll give you all a rundown of what we know about firebats. Once he goes up on PTR I'll get into his quotes, abilities and interactions. Hope you all enjoy it!

How do I have this out so fast? I've had this written since Junkrat. I've also had four separate lore sections made in case they made it an established firebat. Sadly my giant Jack Frost lore thread will never see the light of day.

I really like StarCraft guys.

Last thread got nuked for a few hours because automod thought it was a Star Wars spoiler apparently, but this one should be good to go!

History of the Firebat

Firebats are flame troopers who take their roots back to the Terran Confederacy, one of the first terran governments in the Koprulu sector. In order to supplement their armies, the Terran Confederacy took criminals, murderers, and political prisoners and put them through a process called neural resocialization, basically chemically lobotomizing them into obedient soldiers and implanting new sets of memories in them. Those among them that displayed a tendency for pyromania were recruited for the firebat corps, and bring their vicious flamethrowers to the frontlines.

The first generation of firebats wore CMC-600 armor, and the design was similar to that of marines (like Raynor's armor), with two large exposed flame tanks on their back. Experiments were done to add jetpacks to firebats but this was scrapped early on. Firebats are armed with two perdition flamethrowers, chemical flamethrowers that can shoot streams of plasma, capable of seeping through cracks in zerg carapace and armor to literally burn enemies from the inside. However, the containment field for firebat suits was notoriously dangerous, so marines kept their distance from these maniac frontline troopers.

It's unknown when the firebat program itself started, and not all firebats were resocialized convicts. Confederate flame troopers date back to the Guild Wars, a fight between the Confederacy and their rival corporate nation the Kel-Morian Combine, as does their CMC-600 armor. Jim Raynor's and Tychus's former squadmate in Heaven's Devils, Hank Harnack, was considered to be a "firebat," as he was a flamethrower specialist, though he was never directly referred to as one. One of the oldest and most venerated tacticians of the Confederacy (semi-canonically at least) was named Jack Frost, a firebat who "wrote the book on colonial warfare," who lead an insurrection against the Confederacy on Brontes IV when it was invaded by the zerg. Another famous firebat was named Gui Montag, who gained glory in the battle of Tal Qirat, and survived the transition from the Confederacy to the Terran Dominion, helping their Emperor Arcturus Mengsk clear out bands of pirates that rose to power during the transitions between governments.

Some elite firebats were used by a secret group named the Cerberus Program before the Great War, and they were assigned to help contain outbreaks from facilities studying the zerg, keeping their existence a secret from the public. When the United Earth Directorate (Alexei Stukov's and Lt. Morales's faction) invaded the Koprulu sector, they brought their own firebats, outfitted with more advanced C-140 flamethrowers and supported by medics. This gave them a higher survival rate, though usually the UED seemed to use marines more (their AI focused on them more, while Dominion AI would build tons of firebats). Advanced firebats named pyrotechnic engineers were used to protect their scientists in charge of commanding their controlled zerg broods, after the UED seized control of the second Overmind.

After the Brood War and the fall of the Terran Confederacy to the new Terran Dominion, the firebat's kit underwent a redesign. A new, bulkier CMC-600 armor was developed, with less exposed fuel tanks and heavier plating. These firebats were also outfitted with incinerator gauntlets with two perdition flamethrower nozzles, and a new helmet with thermal suppression lenses to protect their eyes. Some firebats were outfitted with Juggernaut Plating, thickening the weak spots in their armor.

However, with a shift in their combat doctrine to fight aliens as opposed to other terrans the Dominion realized the need to deploy heavier anti-armor infantry over flame troopers, so from the firebat's suit design the 5-4 armor was developed, outfitted with heavy grenade launchers, creating the marauder (the melee minions on StarCraft Heroes maps, and what Maraudin' Muradin is). These began to fill the firebat's role of frontline infantry for the Dominon, but the firebat was never truly replaced, and continued to serve all through the Second Great War and End War (SC2).

Other factions made plenty of use of firebats. Jim Raynor and his Raynor's Raiders regained firebat technology after aiding the colony of Agria after it was invaded during the Second Great War, and recruited a group of ex-Confederate firebats named the Devil Dogs. The Dominion meanwhile maintained one of the greatest firebat corps and anti-zerg infestation specialists in the sector, named Prometheus Company, who was known among the Marine Corps for "burning more worlds than the protoss." Prometheus Company served as the elite guard for Emperor Arcturus Mengsk, and tried in vain to defend his palace when they were attacked by Kerrigan during the end of the Second Great War.

After Arcturus Mengsk died and his son Valerian Mengsk took over, he overhauled the Dominion Armed Forces, banning the practice of neural resocialization and establishing support networks for those who underwent the process. Firebats were now a volunteer group, though marines noted they would trust resocialized criminals over anyone who would voluntarily put on the death trap that is firebat armor.

In gameplay, firebats were a close ranged melee unit in StarCraft 1, with heavier armor than the marine, and able to hit enemies in a short cone in front of them. While they were weak against armored units, they were able to easily burn through light units like zerglings and zealots. In StarCraft II's multiplayer they were removed, replaced by the marauder, and with their role as a frontline flame trooper later filled by the hellbat (flamethrower mercs on Braxis Holdout and Warhead Junction). However, they appeared regularly in all StarCraft II campaigns as a staple terran unit.

So Who Is Blaze?

We don't know much! He's 100% a Heroes original character. But we can assume some things based off of his appearance.

Blaze utilizes the post-Great War CMC-600, with the extra plating and bulkier fuel tanks. He seems to be based off of the standard SCII firebat model, which only appeared in the campaign. Of note on his armor is he appears to be missing the "firebat" symbol (which shows up on the Raider Rexxar firebat skin), and has a yellow skull painted on the front of his armor.

Blaze's allegiances are as of yet unknown. His title is the veteran firebat, so given that most heroes seem to take from around the Heart of the Swarm/Legacy of the Void timeframe it's safe to assume he's survived through both the Great War and Second Great War. It's a tossup between the Confederacy/Dominion and Raynor's Raiders, as both were known for their use of firebats in their respective wars. It would be unsafe to speculate too much given the one frame we see of him, but I expect we'll get a ton more lore once quotes/interactions come out, which will be a different thread.

His pose and background in his reveal video was based off of this piece of concept art for the Firebat in StarCraft II. This art would later be changed to a marauder.

While not an exact match, his voice actor is very similar to his StarCraft II iteration.

Short one, but hey this is an original character. In a few weeks I'll be back with a quotes/interactions/skins thread once he goes up on the PTR. Hope you enjoyed this short look into the character, and see you all around!

Thank you for the D.Va buff, Blizzard!

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 02:20 PM PST

While everyone is going crazy over the Garrosh nerfs, this was the change that interested me the most. D.Va's mech basic attacks were finally buffed.

I've played D.Va for the first time only after her nerfs. I was like "Damn, she is so much fun, but her basic attacks in mech form are so MEH. If only they would revert that one nerf and she would be really good." Blizzard must've heard my silent prayers, because her basic attack damage is actually higher than on release! And damn, she feels so much better now!! I finally don't feel underpowered when I play her.

I actually used my gold that I was saving and insta-bought her after the patch and I couldn't be happier. Anyway, what is your opinion on the current state of D.Va? Is she in a good place? Still underpowered? Or is she actually overpowered somehow? I only played a few games with her, so I would like to hear other people's opinions.

Garrosh's change is a massive nerf to his old combo, but created a new combo that is also a 2.75s stun.

Posted: 20 Dec 2017 10:31 PM PST

There is a new combo to be done now with Garrosh. Granted, you can't pull players anymore but what you can do now is this.

  1. Use Wrecking Ball to throw enemies behind you at max range.

  2. Use your Groundbreaker to stun them immediately, because the ranges work perfectly for this.

  3. The 0.75 seconds gives you enough time to walk up to them and hit them with a 2 second taunt.

  4. After you hit level 16, this is followed up by 1 second of 40% slow. (Rough Landing Talent)

  5. After level 20, this combo works on two enemies with Titanic Might, since every part of this combo is AOE.

Granted, you need to be up close to an enemy now to start this combo, but 2.75 seconds of stun is nothing to be reckoned with, especially with his health buffs. But when at level 20, a Garrosh can lock down 2 people for 3.75 seconds, with a displacement on top of that. That's a pretty busted combo that people are just not realizing exists yet.

My build that I use for this new combo playstyle is

Unrivaled Strength > In For The Kill > Into The Fray > Warlord's Challenge > Defensive Measures > Rough Landing > Titanic Might

Blizzard's favorite number this month is 2.75 apparently, thanks Valeera.
