If you play hero league and say things like "I cant heal" you need to play vs AI or quick match until you do. It's unacceptable to play a ranked game mode if you cant play all the roles. You're screwing with everyone on your team and ruining the game.

This is just a mess. The bug was found within 1 day of the new season, the damage would have been very limited (few people had already actually finished placements at that time, many people were waiting for a bugfix or with placements in general).

  • Now we will always have the question if someone was misplaced this season. Even if it was a legit placement and you corrected everything now.
  • The climb to grandmaster is a joke because some people are reset while others are not, not even talking about the impact misplaced people had on the games to get there

It might still not be to late to do a full reseed. Admit you messed up this season, bite the bullet, and end this frustration and doubt in the player-base.

EDIT: thanks for all the replies guys, this blew up. Seems Blizz is currently looking into ranked modes again and blocked it until further notice, I appreciate their quick response to this issue. Performance Adjustement punishes you for playing well, and rewards you for playing poorly.

So yesterday i was watching Prismat's stream, where he currently collects data about Performance adjustment points, and he experiment a lot of different things, and i was very chocked by what i've seen.

He tried out 2 very different Tank playstyle.

The pro playstyle gives you a -49 points. Whereas the poor playstyle rewards you a +50 points.

The reason being; using your stuns when it matters, not showing on the map, scouting, does NOT give you any stat number (stun time, exp, siege damage and so on...).

While the "stat grinding" playstyle just maximise numbers all over the place. The difference in points is almost 100 ! Meaning playing well will give you +150 per win and -250 per loss. While playing poorly and "stat farming" will give you +250 per win and -150 per loss.

At 50% Winratio that means you will drop ranks by playing properly and climb ranks by playing poorly.

So now it's just a matter of how much winrate can you afford losing by playing bad while still having a positive performance ratio...

Basically the system punishes good players for doing their job properly, and reward bad players for just grinding stats. It feels very wrong!

Ranked play has been disabled

Just had a game in unranked where I muted a silenced Garrosh's pings he was still able to spam the respawn timers. Very obnoxious.

People saying the MMR is fixed: Multiple season GM getting placed into plat 5.

So I hadn't played until today, because I still had exams until today. I saw on streams and heard on reddit that there was a huge issue with initial placements. Fast forward until today, the affected accounts have been 'fixed' by a reset. Due to me not playing my initial placements, it seems as though my account didn't reset and still has the placing bug. I find it highly unlikely that someone who has played in GM (and masters prior to this) for multiple seasons on end would suddenly go down to plat 5 with a 6-4 score in placements... Blizzard just get on it and do a full season reset.

I'd really like a guild in HotS

The more I play games with people over Discord, or people I meet through podcaster/streamer communities, the more I want a guild system in HotS.

I want more than just an open access chat channel for whoever learns the name of it. I want tools to control who can come and go from the group. I want the lobbylink technology to be available just to form a group of 5, and then post that link in my guild chat so I know I'll only get guild members grouping up. I want some way to show that I'm part of the guild I'm in, whether that be some suffix/prefix to my name or some cosmetic flair we all share.

I want all this to be in the client, not through a second application. I think this would be a great boon for Team League, as well as increasing the average player knowledge in the game.

A lot of my buddies who were masters and high diamond have been getting plats in draft, the system literally thinks they're plats as well.

It's been awful to watch, you can check the clip above for the full video to see some of the drafts Lockdown has been getting.

It would be wise to revert the changes and postpone this system until it's fixed & tested in PTR.

On Performance Adjustment (PA):

1) Some heroes like Nova and Valeera have no real stats, their damage outputs have been buffed and the numbers and overtuned compared to the statistics that blizzard gathered plus the only source of data would be PTR but it's not reliable for PA.

Nova is considerably abusable for points.

2) Shorter games cost players points, they all get negative PA, prism, Grubby, Cris.

This could be due to damage being calculated based on longer games and being divided by minutes resulting in shorter games ignoring longer game scaling.

I have no idea on how Blizzard is comparing games with data, it's clearly NOT working.

3) Padding the stats is a huge thing now, boosting stats and abusing the stats to minimize is working, this means that a toxic player who's giving up will no longer sit in the base, but go and siege to minimize the loss of points.

4) Some heroes might have different viable builds, some builds might enhance the stats better than others.

Valla has W build which leads to more damage and less focused fire Q, illidan has a teamfight / split soak build.

The system isn't working at its best so you can't trust going the proper build anymore but the "max damage" build, it can be worrying.

On Placements & MM:

1) People still getting placed higher with negative WR.

2) People still starting placements with divisions they don't belong in.

3) Insane levels of frustrations with current draft stability, silvers can turn into plats and so can masters and to let them draft all together is just unheard of.

Conclusion:

The idea behind the system is great, the execution is poor, it's just not working out, we get the fact Blizzard advertised all these changes and everything, the intent behind them is great, however, things are just not working out the way they're supposed to.

Let alone that with massive reworks to at least 5 heroes, you have no reliable data whatsoever regarding them and their performance across all levels.

Even if the system worked perfectly:

1) The intricacy of the matter is beyond numbers.

2) Teamcomps enable different plays, heroes are being tuned and reworked all the time, adjusting their numbers consistently would take some time, you'd need to disable PA for some heroes for a while after their reworks just to gather enough data.

Could demotivate others from playing heroes with no positive PA.

At the very least the current system isn't functioning properly, the need for a better system is dire, meanwhile this could be disabled.

Despite their efforts to keep game time the same I feel like games are getting very fast, at least on certain maps (ie. those with knight camp or hellbat).

I had sub 15 minute games 3 times in a row on Cursed Hollow, Warhead Junction and Tomb. The games were not that one sided either, the teams were mostly balanced but one mistake in the early game lead to getting 10 later which lead to a very fast end of game.

The camp buffes make the camps very strong. Surely some of it is that players just dont expect it (hellbat was pretty meh before but no pushes like crazy). But some of the strengh it also coming from the improved minions. The mercs tank pretty well and minions which already did pretty decent damage to structures now melt them if untouched.

What should have been done differently

Speaking as a developer with the benefit of hindsight on the rollout here:

  1. Don't rollout too many changes at once. PBM + Season Reset + gameplay changes. PBM should have been introduced mid-season, it's a fiesta now with placements and the whole season having been affected (multiple times).

  2. Phase it in. Mid-season "PBM is now active on Silver and below". Gather feedback. PTR does not cut it for ranked as there is no ranked there. Also the weighting of PBM ought to have been increased gradually, not +/- 50 from the get go. Try 1/10th of that.

    3. And they should give everyone the rainbow steed they took from us as compensation.

And from what I can gather on the PBM itself, two huge oversights:

  1. The algorithm needs to give not just an MMR (to generate the adjustment figure), but an uncertainty figure as well.

    Given that rare stomp games, or TLV games, are spitting out huge adjustment figures indicates that the algorithm isn't indicating the "I am very unsure on this value" that it should be.

    The adjustment figure needs to be multiplied by the PBM's uncertainty over its assessment, such that stomps end up giving a tiny fraction of the PBM they do now - except for, eg, the one hero on the opposing team that was tower walking the whole game (where the system would be very confident he was playing very badly).

  2. PBM needs to be adjusted by player MMR uncertainty.

    I just cannot believe they're not doing this, I had too much faith.

    PBM is a feed-forward mechanism. It's where you have a system that is capable of finding MMR, but that takes a long time to get there (as it uses only one data point per 30 minutes game time), and so they are using a second method to predict what outcome it'll arrive at ahead of time.

    This correctly accelerates smurfs/new players to the correct divisions, but as time goes on they must decay its impact as W/L MMR absolutely must trump.

    By not doing this, they're risking huge instability in the whole system, as they are using PBM to predict MMR, MMR that is being determined largely by PBM. Without providing heavy damping to the majority of the playerbase, to provide target brackets determined by traditional W/L techniques, this system will not prove stable (at least not without heavily damping it for everyone, which then defeats the point).

    It's also something that would not have shown up before enabling PBM, as it was only "observing", but not affecting the results (which become its own inputs), allowing for it to look good until they actually enabled it.

  • Effectively, the adjustment figure really must be this:

    PBM adjust = PBM score * PBM uncertainty * MMR uncertainty

    It's not sensible to be having well placed people moving with PBM as quickly as newbies. I don't know why they are doing it this way, and it makes me cringe so much that they are.

    IMO Blizzard really needs to employ someone well versed in control systems engineering ASAP, as that's what they have here, and their current approach will not work, and I really hope they see this.

I have followed Grubby a long time (10 years or so) and play HOTS mainly because of him.

Yesterday I got to play against him in a quite umemorable QM (and even win)!

May not sound like much, but for a hobby player like myself it was a great day to be able to see myself in the Grubby-stream :)
