Halo 5 Campaign Critique - Friendly AI Do Not Use Picked-Up Weapons

Posted: 30 Nov 2017 08:04 AM PST

I don't know about you guys, but one of the most enjoyable things about past Halo campaigns for me was giving my friendly AI companions a rocket launcher or sniper rifle and watching them take out enemies, especially in the passenger seat warthogs. It was enjoyable to scavenge for more powerful weapons to form an "formidable effective resistance" as one might say.

I've always been annoyed by the fact that in Halo 5 you can tell your friendly AI to pick up weapons on the ground like Incineration Cannons, Snipers and Fuel Rods but they will never fire them. They will keep using their pistol or DMR or whatever standard loadout weapon they were carrying before and will just hold the picked-up weapon on their back. Maybe 343 thought that the friendly AI were too OP with these weapons, but this was never a problem in the past. I hope it is adjusted in Halo 6.

Halo made me not feel like watching movies when I began playing.

Posted: 30 Nov 2017 06:25 PM PST

When i got into Halo 3, I never wanted to see movies anymore. Because that was 2 hours that could be spent on playing. So weird looking back.

Did anyone else stop doing something entirely just to play halo more?

Is it just me or does the Locke/Master Chief fight unrealistic?

Posted: 30 Nov 2017 01:59 AM PST

I'm not being a John fanboy, although I totally am a John fanboy, but every time I see the fight between Locke and John in front of the Guardian, I'm thinking "Yeah right"

Of course John would win that fight hands down. Wouldn't he? Yes, Locke's MJOLNIR suit is probably superior to John's, but Locke is just what he is, a man. He has only his own strength and will.

John, on the other hand, is augmented. He has a whole series of physiological enhancements that Locke does not have: his muscle fiber is more dense, making him significantly stronger, compounded by his ceramic-ossified bone, so getting hit by John, Locke would feel like he just got hit by a Warthog; his visual acuity is sharper, so he would see Locke's movements more clearly; and his reflexes are markedly improved, so his reactions would be sooo much faster-Locke shouldn't even be able to lay a hand on him. I think in that fight, John would proceed to make Locke hurt in places he never hurt before.

What I don't know about Locke's MJOLNIR suit is if it works in symbiosis with his movements, like John's Mk. 6: the armor works with John as much as John works with the armor. I'm guessing that Locke's armor doesn't do this because I don't see a neural interface on the back of his head, unless ONI came up with a way to do so without the neural port.

I understand it's for the dramatic effect of the scene. And it is pretty awesome when Locke breaks John's visor and then you know it's about to be on. But afterwards, reality kicks in and I'm thinking wait a minute...

Which Halo game brings back the most memories?

Posted: 30 Nov 2017 11:55 PM PST

Halo 3 ODST brings back the most memories for me, I don't know why but the atmosphere and the music of the game has something to do with it.

Halo + Battlefront II (2005)

Posted: 30 Nov 2017 07:40 PM PST

Play as hunters almost the same way as you play Droidekas. Play as marines you would play as Stormtroopers. Play as pack of grunts almost same way as Droids. Play 'Engineers' almost same way as Engineers. Play Elites same way as you'd play the Stormtroopers. Play Brutes as you'd play heavy units. Fly in and participate in space battles along with ship boarding where you could possibly destroy them from the inside like the Scarab, but in space. Invade UNSC worlds and end up glassing them to death.

Who am I kidin'? This won't happen...

So when is the custom games connection issue getting fixed?

Posted: 30 Nov 2017 09:32 PM PST

Literally cannot play half of the custom games in progress and it's been like this for weeks. I'm sick of it.

Edit: and the constant lag spikes in every game both at the beginning of and throughout the rounds that make the game completely unresponsive.

Just redownloaded it to try it out and see if its any different from H3 on the MCC and I keep getting this message saying "Information could not be retrieved from the Halo3 server."

Any help would be appreciated.

A way to improve community feedback on game changes, testing, etc.

Posted: 30 Nov 2017 11:22 AM PST

Community Feedback and aiming to keep the community happy is very important - it's important for us to voice our opinions and for the developer to consider those opinions when making a Halo game. However, after scrolling through any feedback thread or conversation on Twitter about how Halo is vs what Halo should be, it becomes extremely messy and overwhelming, even for me - and I don't even want to know what it's like for the guy who's job it is to determine where the community stands on something.. tip of the hat to those guys... Anyway, I think I have a couple of ideas worth considering as a way to streamline how we give feedback and for 343 to gather data on that feedback.

I. In-game feedback and surveys

This is more of a Halo 6 and beyond kind of thing since it's probably too much to add to Halo 5 at this point. One example of how this would work is that 343 releases a preview/testing playlist to give us a chance to play on future settings, gametypes, and tuning changes. Then after playing 10 games or so, you get something on your screen that includes a question (or multiple questions) about the changes with multiple answers to choose from. It could also include a free-form response section where people can type more specific feedback. This data is then sent back to 343 to review. Using the recent oddball and BR start testing playlist as an example it could be something like this:

"What are your initial thoughts on the starting weapons used in this test playlist?"

A. Love it! B. It was okay, but it needs more work C. I'm not sure yet D. I don't like it

Additional Comments: (player types whatever they want here)

This could improve the total amount of feedback 343 receives (since the current method requires leaving your Xbox and signing on to waypoint). It could also help in minimizing a bandwagon effect.

Often times, when certain people dislike a set of changes, it will influence the opinions of others (Ive been guilty of this before too). This could lead to some not even bothering to test things out for themselves, or trying it out with the preconceived notion of "ugh this is going to be so dumb. Im gonna hate this", which may skew their feeling toward the changes a bit.

The bandwagon can also drown out a lot of people who feel differently if the bandwagon is loud enough. In regards to the most recent incident with the Battle Rifle starts, a number of competitive players including myself really enjoyed the new settings - but as the debate heated up, all the BR supporters in the comp community fell silent because we felt like it was a losing battle and didn't want to be labeled as "the problem" with Halo (well we had already been labeled that actually - A lot of us just didn't want to catch more heat, or simply got sick of being drowned out by the others). Would in-game feedback have made a difference in the result? Perhaps not, but I think it would have allowed for a more accurate depiction of where the community actually stood on the matter. Overall it would help minimize the risk of outside influences skewing the data in some form of fashion. It's not going to be a sure fix, but it seems to me like it would help eliminate some biases.

II. Always (or very frequently) have a "test" playlist available.

This one can work for H5 as well as future games - This would mean that there would always or usually be a test playlist available to test any of the latest ideas being thrown around at 343 as well as to test changes that are nearing the final phase of testing that will be released very soon.

I feel like I've seen a lot of great ideas from the community that sadly will never even be tested by the community at large. A lot of times I'll see someone suggest a very minor change that I think would be a great improvement to the game, but most people will never even get a chance to try it for themselves because of other big ticket items that are the current focus of discussion - increasing the frequency of test playlists will allow smaller and less urgent tweaks that could significantly improve the game to be put to the test quickly and frequently. Reading someone's suggestion is easily dismissible if you even think there's a chance it wouldn't work - but actually testing it out and determining for yourself whether it works or not are very different things.

That's all I have for now. I know it's only two suggestions, but I had the idea and wanted to post it before I forgot about it. I'm not saying that this is a cure-all in terms of community feedback and making the community happy, but I do feel like it would be an improvement from the current systems in place.

Edit: corrected typos and re-worded some things for clarity
