Appreciation thread for the amount of Axes that daily die in demo mode.

Posted: 12 Dec 2017 03:30 AM PST

Every day, millions of thousands of Axes die for our pure enjoyment of the game in demo mode. For trying out new builds. For trying to crash Dota when spamming shivas and earthshaker's ultimate. For seeing how much damage silencer and pudge can do with thousands of kills accumulated to their passives. To practice skills shots and invoker's combos and still suck later on pubs.

So please, don't kill so many Axes while waiting for your queue.

Legacy hotkeys and animation bugs introduced with 7.06

Posted: 12 Dec 2017 10:44 AM PST

Spell animations

In a patch after 7.07, the way how animations are handled has been changed. This change caused several abilities to lose their animations, and also caused some other issues on a few more heroes. Most of these got fixed. Here are the not-yet-fixed ones

1. Missing animations

The following spells still have not their animations fixed.

  1. X Marks the Spot Return (used same anim as X Marks the Spot)
  2. Battle Cry (had its own animation)
  3. Telekinesis Land (used same anim as Telekinesis)
  4. Ancient Thunderhide's Frenzy (Slam got fixed, Frenzy didn't)

video demo

2. Brewmaster spirits use wrong animations

When having Aghanim's Scepter, the Earth and Storm elements use the wrong animations for Thunder Clap/Drunken Haze. Not that both, Earth and Storm, do have an animation for Thunder Clap/Drunken Haze, which they currently do not use, but they used to.

  1. Earth uses Hurl Boulder anim for Thunder Clap
  2. Storm uses Cyclone anim for Drunken Haze

video demo

3. Holy Persuasion uses the wrong animation

For this spell, there is an opportunity to use 2 different animations based on what is targeted.

Currently, it always uses the old Test of Faith Teleport animation. Ideally, it should use both, the Teleport and the Persuasion animation

  1. Use Test of Faith Teleport anim when targeting allied units (as tp anim)
  2. Use Holy Persuasion anim when targeting enemy units (converting anim)

4. Doom uses Devour animation for neutral creep spells

Doom has 2 animations for his Devour neutral spells (and 1 channel anim for the Tornado). But currently, most of them use Devour's animation, and some use Scorched Earth (based on which slot the ability is on the unit).

video demo

5. Rubick's custom stolen spell animations do not work at all

The hero suffering the most from this is Rubick. Almost none of his 80+ unique animations for stolen spells work. Instead he uses Telekinesis for spells in the Q slot, nothing for spells in the W, D and F slots, Fade Bolt anim for spells in the E slot, and Null Field anim for spells in the ultimate slot.

What's the point of giving him unique animations when none are being used?

video demo

Legacy hotkeys

7.07 gave us many reworks on heroes. Some of these resulted in abilities being moved in slots. This is not an issue for the default QWERTY hotkey layout, but it messes heavily with legacy hotkeys.

For some reason, legacy hotkeys are currently not bound to the spells, but are bound to the ability slots the spells are in. This means for example, Earthshaker's first ability slot will always have F as legacy key, no matter if he has Fissure there, or any other spell.

So now to the messed up heroes.

Chen

Holy Persuasion's legacy key used to be R. Now it is F. It use old Test of Faith (Teleport) legacy key, because it got move in its slot. It should be changed back to R.

image

Morphling

Morph/Attribute Shift used to have D and F as legacy keys (D for agi, F for str). Now their keys are F for str and T for agi, while Adaptive Strike took the D key, because both Morphs got moved one slot to the right and str strike now takes the 3rd slot.

It should be:

  1. W for Waveform
  2. E for Agi Adaptive Strike
  3. T for Str Adaptive Strike
  4. F for str morph
  5. D for agi morph
  6. R for morph ult

image

Troll Warlord

This one affects every hotkey layout.

Both Whirling Death spells used to have the same hotkey, which makes sense since they are never active at the same time. Now they use W for ranged and E for melee on qwerty layouts. In legacy, they are now E for ranged and F for melee. F was Fervor's legacy hotkey. As of now, Fervor has no legacy hotkey at all, since troll has nothing bound in the 4th ability slot.

Whirling Axes (Melee) should use W in qwerty layouts, and E in legacy key. Fervor should be F in legacy key.

image (legacy)

image (qwerty)

Besides these, there are 2 neutrals with messed up/no legacy keys.

The Ancient Thunderhide's abilities once got moved around, but the legacy keys were not adapted (neither were the cast animations). It used to have D as legacy key for its Slam, and F for its Frenzy. Now it uses D for Frenzy (because Frenzy took Slam's old slot), and Slam has no legacy key (because it took the aura's old slot). Slam should be D again and Frezy should be F.

The Ancient Prowler Shaman has no legacy keys. It currently uses the qwerty layout for its legacy keys (Q for its slam and W for its root attack). It should have fitting hotkeys like D for Desecrate (its slam) and E, R or T for Petrify (its root attack)

The dark side of working with esports

Posted: 12 Dec 2017 05:11 AM PST

With dota, overwatch, lol and cs growing to the point we are right now I see people everyday interested in being part of the industry and while that's amazing I don't want to sugarcoat what being a part of the business means, specially if you're new. I'm not even trying to say i'm old but i guess I passed through the newcomer part of the job and I can give insight into that.

I'm doing fine today but that doesn't mean that I didn't got scammed when I started . I got scammed a LOT and that's not exclusive to me. If you want to work with esports (and you're new to it) I suggest that whatever it is that you're doing that you build a community around yourself and you depend as little as possible on orgs big or small.

A lot of people feel more comfortable having sponsors or a known org behind themselves yet in my experience chances of being scammed or having your payment being ridiculously delayed (even by known orgs) soars proportionally to how unknown you are. In my case I literally dropped out of college to work full time with esports meaning that huge delays on payments were dangerous to my well being. I also know people that lived in terrible conditions because of how uncertain payments can be.

Create content that pleases people directly be it text, streams, videos, casts and try to make a living out of known services like twitch, patreon and youtube. Everything else can work but its risky by default and considering how risky esports is in its own nature you get the idea. I did multiple jobs for known orgs at the time that either never payed me or to this day keep delaying it .

Unfortunately though a lot of jobs in the industry don't fit easily in the 3 platforms I mentioned: coaches, managers, players, designers, rely a lot on orgs for their salaries or have trouble building a community around themselves because of the nature of their jobs. Going back though, only people speaking out to the abuses that happen thus red flagging orgs that don't comply to what was agreed upon will change anything. Unfortunately a lot of times even contracts don't mean much in this space and while a lot changed for the better ever since esports started there's still a lot of shady stuff going on.

Interesting facts about Mineski and Faceless from the stream Jabz was on.

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 07:03 PM PST

Not directly his own stream, but he was on it. All of it was in Thai https://www.twitch.tv/videos/208356095

There are tons of interesting information. I don't even know if Jabz was allowed to tell us or not, but since he said it I will translate it all.

  • Jabz was 4800 mmr when MMR first came out.

  • Jabz was the one that present the idea of "role switch" in Team Faceless. The reasons were because he was the main drafter of the team and couldn't help team with the early game(like explaining draft? I guess) while focusing on the mid lane so he changed to support. Obviously was not the best idea

  • Shadow (TI6 Wings ) invited Jabz to play with him. Tons of offer from SEA team except Fnatic. Several Chinese teams but no offer from Europe or NA.

  • This should be obvious. No Salary in Faceless but there is Salary in Mineski.

  • During his time playing mid he said that Miracle was not the best mid laners (laning wise). He feels okay laning with Miracle but not SumaiL who is the literally the best mid laners he has ever played with. Noone is better than Miracle but not as good as Sumail, Miracle though are best at mid-late game.

  • Iceiceice was the one that invited Jabz to play WCA 2017 since there are nothing to lose, but playing with Mushi makes everything click and then they stay together. Also if Mineski didn't work out they were going to go to China together.

  • Jabz has a one year contract on Mineski and also likely all of them, so regardless of the results they will stick together until the end of TI.

  • Iceiceice is the funniest person of the team while Mushi is the most serious one(but he is a good person).

  • He jokingly said that he might be the most mechanically skilled in the team but then change to Nana's Puck

  • Iceiceice is not as mechanically skilled as Nana but he is really really good at predicting enemy and this is how Iceiceice is so good.

  • The main reasons of Mineski's slump is because they have tons of tournaments to attend and those tournaments literally burnt everyone in the team. Jabz got sick out of that and going back and forth for PR stuff at perfect world minor really fuck them up.

  • Winter helped the team long before he was officially announce as a coach , the team suddenly on low when he was announced as a coach , so Winter got a lot of shit for that even though he was not at fault at all.

  • They also couldn't adapt to the new patch fast enough, make it worse with few bootcamps.

  • Currently each of the players will rest in their own country till next year. Might be a week bootcamp before the end of the year though.

  • Jabz thinks that to breakout as a pro player right now. MMR is super freaking important. He used this method to get into Faceless too.

  • If he was to pick the all star team (regardless of language barrier)

1 Miracle (he said that Miracle is better at 1 than 2)

2 SCCC (MidOne was in the choice but his playstyle is too similar to Miracle)

3 KPII (not a farming oriented offlane )

4 Yapzor

5 Kuroky (Best Captain in his opinion)

That should be all of it. Sorry if the format is bad or is hard to read. Hope you guys enjoy it.

Valve - Australian divine 5 matchmaking needs to be fixed please

Posted: 12 Dec 2017 12:46 AM PST

Hi everyone,

Few days ago, matchmaking algorithm has been changed without warning (globally, it seems). In my opinion, this has affected the top end of Australian mmr curve very negatively.

For a little bit of context, Australian server is quite underpopulated. I think there are less than 100 players with divine 5 ranking in our server.

Before the algorithm change, we had our own little way of making sure we don't wait for 2 hours for a game and that was to snipe each other. Most people had each other added and simply queued when other people were queueing using the friends list.

With this method, it was easy to find games; you just had to wait until a high mmr game was about to end and queue, and you were almost guaranteed to find a game when previous game ended. It was also common to chain-queue game after game since the same players would keep queueing. We also used https://www.twitch.tv/kingofthegorgonites, a popular Australian high mmr streamer, to coordinate game snipes.

However, this is not possible anymore since the matchmaking algorithm forces lower average mmr. While we could snipe each other before, now it separates the high mmr players into different games with divine, ancient, legend and even archon players.

This is not good for us high mmr players for many reasons:

  1. Games are lower skill. If I wanted to play a low skill game, I would just play turbo or unranked. When I play ranked, I'm looking for skilled players for coordination, strategy and execution.

  2. It indirectly encourages toxicity. Such disparity in skill makes higher mmrs more prone to flaming, and lower mmrs being flamed more. It is frustrating for many top players to lose a game because lower mmr players did not do something correctly, and while this is completely outside their control, that does not stop them flaming.

  3. Games feel more out of your control and therefore less fun. Some games are simply lost because a low mmr person fed the entire game, or gets picked off lategame without buyback, etc. These things are generally less likely to happen in higher average games.

  4. Most importantly, aus ranked matchmaking was fine before the change, at least for the top end of players. It wasn't perfect, but it was fine. We had figured out a system to consistently get high quality games. It was common to see 6k average mmr games chained one after another with high mmrs sniping each other, and now the highest I have seen is 5.5k average.

The 6k average mmr games before the algorithm change were quite good - aus server has its own meta due to a high number of hero spammers, and it is always fun to play with people you're familiar with.

TL;DR: New matchmaking algorithm forces shorter queue times and lower average skill, which is making ranked a very bad experience for high mmr players in Australia. Please revert it to what it was.

Thank you for reading,

Crescent

[Bug] Doom Aghs Still Counters Tiny (And all Status resistance)

Posted: 12 Dec 2017 04:03 AM PST

Currently, the interaction between Doom and status resistance has been HALF fixed.

While an enemy is aghs doomed within vicinity of Doom, they take ticks of damage once per second and the duration does not tick down (correct).

When the enemy LEAVES the duration prolonging aoe around Doom, they take tick damage at a rate amplified by the status resistance (every [1-Status Resistance] seconds. This is fine, BUT the duration after leaving the vicinity of doom is not reduced to compensate for the faster ticking speed, so 50% status resistance against Doom's Aghs means the target will take TWICE as much damage over the duration once they have successfully ran away from Doom.

Kicked From Server

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 05:48 PM PST

Careful going into queue right now.

I just got kicked from the Server while in Queue.

Could not rejoin, just kept saying can't connect.

Then I got the 5 minute ban from queue. Careful queuing friends.

EDIT: This was US East/West

EDIT2: Just tried about an hour after making this post. Queues are still not working. If you have a 15m or 30m Temp Ban, don't queue up until you see a "it's resolved post" - Your next one might be 24 hours.

Comanche matchfixed vs Swiss Quality Gaming in Prodota Cup

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 11:07 PM PST

Prodota Cup is now controled by matchfixing teams. Comanche was matchfixing in it: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/dota2/ProDotA_Cup_Europe/25

Evidence:

http://www.vpgame.com/match/10265389.html?category=dota

http://www.dota188.com/match/138879/show.do (F10k map1)

http://www.vpgame.com/match/10265392.html?category=dota

http://www.dota188.com/match/138880/show.do (F10k map2)

http://www.vpgame.com/match/10265386.html?category=dota (Handicap -1.5)

Commanche's odds was 0.14 2 minutes before the match, and it went up to 5.69 when the match starts: http://www.dota188.com/match/138877/show.do

You can find similar odds change on other bet sites. The win rate on Comanche is expected to be 86% as in joinDota (below), while the odds on those bet sites changed dramatically in last minutes to favor SQG to win with >80%. Comanche won Evil Corporation just before with very good performance and in this match vs SQG you can see clear feeding from monza on both map1 and map2, like TP into 5 enemies, chasing with low HP, running towards enemy's T1 tower etc.
