The Oldest Games of Steam Early Access. (#35 will probably not shock you.)

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 01:58 PM PST

I'm cross-posting this from /r/pcgaming because I figure the length DayZ has been in Early Access is thrown around a lot and this brings a bit more info to the discussion.

Steam's Early Access program became available March 20th, 2013. Since then Early Access model has been inundated with new games, mostly by independent developers. Here is an accounting of the first year of games to enter the program (those that entered Early Access during 2013).

The list was made using this SteamSpy page and this old RockPaperShotgun article. There may be some games missing as there's no real way to search for games that entered Early Access in 2013 but have since left the program (thanks, Valve).

The first batch:

  • ARMA 3

    Entered: March 20th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2013)
    User Reviews: Very Positive
Notes: The very first game to graduate from Early Access.

  • Kerbal Space Program

    Entered: March 20th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2015)
    User Reviews: Overwhelmingly Positive

  • Prison Architect

    Entered: March 20th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2015)
    User Reviews: Very Positive

  • Drunken Robot Pornography

    Entered: March 20th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2014)
    User Reviews: Very Positive

  • Gear Up

    Entered: March 20th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2015)
    User Reviews: Mostly Positive

  • Gnomoria

    Entered: March 20th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2016)
    User Reviews: Mostly Positive

  • Kinetic Void

    Entered: March 20th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2014)
    User Reviews: Mostly Negative
Notes: It seems most Steam users feel the game still deserves the Early Access. In May 2016 somebody seeming to be a dev said that they may be able to renew work on it.

  • StarForge

    Entered: March 20th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2014)
    User Reviews: N/A
Notes: In January of 2017 the game was de-listed from Steam but is available through the official website.

  • Patterns

    Entered: March 20th
Current Status: Development Halted (2014) [see here]
    User Reviews: Very Negative
Notes: The Steam store page has been removed, making it unavailable for purchase.

  • Under the Ocean

    Entered: March 20th
Current Status: Development Halted (2015) [see here]
    User Reviews: N/A
Notes: As of early 2015 the studio ran out of money and all but one developer had left the project. The sole remaining dev made the game unavailable for purchase but pledged to find a way to continue development. In July 2017 the dev said that it "won't be too long" before an update and return to listing the game for purchase.

  • 1... 2... 3... KICK IT! (Drop That Beat Like an Ugly Baby)

    Entered: March 20th
    Current Status: Development Halted (2013)
    User Reviews: Mostly Negative
Notes: The most recent update was in July 2013 (yes, seriously) though the devs announced in August 2014 that they had been working despite not having released new updates to the public. In June of 2016 there were inklings of news ([1] [2]) but nothing since.

  • Kenshi

    Entered: March 20th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Very Positive
Notes: Yep, this is the oldest game still in Early Access. The game currently resides at v0.97.6, and, as of this August, the devs expect the full release to come in Early 2018. As of right now though, Kenshi has been in Early Access for over 4.5 years.

The rest of the year:

  • Insurgency

    Entered: April 25th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2014)
    User Reviews: Very Positive

  • Folk Tale

    Entered: May 30th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Mixed
Notes: The game saw major Alpha updates about every 3 months, with the last being in March 2017. The devs announced in June that the game was being made unavailable for purchase as "internal issues [have] significantly reduced the pace of development."

  • Xenonauts

    Entered: May 31st
    Current Status: Fully Released (2014)
    User Reviews: Very Positive

  • AirMech (now known as "AirMech Strike")

    Entered:
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Very Positive
Notes: Last month the devs brought AirMech Wastelands, also in Early Access. The reason for the new game is detailed here. Essentially, 'Strike' is meant to be a competitive Action-RTS while 'Wastelands' aims to focus on a PVE, Action-RPG experience. The devs seem to suggest that 'Strike' will leave Early Access in the very near future.

  • Interstellar Marines

    Entered: July 2nd
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Mixed
Notes: In May of 2016 the devs announced their intent to focus on finding a publisher to drive the continued development of the game. No such luck has found them yet, and only two updates have come out since that post. In September 2017 it was revealed that the game's director is the sole developer left on the project.

  • Delver

    Entered: September 6th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Very Positive
Notes: The most recent update was back in April, but the next update will be v1.0 and bring the exit from Early Access. Nov 25th 2017 marked the final development livestream, and the devs say they're currently deciding on an ideal release window.

  • Paranormal

    Entered: September 12th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Mixed
Notes: 12 updates in over 4 years. In late 2014 the devs decided to port the game into Unreal Engine 4, extending the Early Access period. 2017 has seen only one update, though the devs promise more frequent patches in the future.

  • Godus

    Entered: September 13th
    Current Status: Development Halted (2016)
    User Reviews: Mostly Negative
Notes: Molyneux's monstrosity is seemingly abandoned. Molyneux himself left the scene in early 2015 after being declared a pathological liar. Developer posts for the game continued into early 2016, with the launch of the combat update named 'Godus Wars'... which oddly came as its own game also in Early Access, though it and Godus were and are strictly bundled together. Since early 2016 though, there's been no news, aside from a RockPaperShotgun piece noting that one of the key developers for the project had left after his contract expired, and seemingly nobody at 22cans was left working on Godus, instead favoring "The Trail: Frontier Challenge", which released this past August.

  • Castle Story

    Entered: September 23rd
    Current Status: Fully Released (2017)
    User Reviews: Mixed

  • Steel Storm: A.M.M.O.

    Entered: September 25th
Current Status: Development Halted (2013) [see here]
    User Reviews: N/A
Notes: I don't see evidence of ANY updates since October 2013, but as recent as March 2016 the devs have pledged that they still intend to complete the game. The Steam store page has been removed, making it unavailable for purchase.

  • The Dead Linger

    Entered: September 27th
Current Status: Development Halted (2015) [see here]
    User Reviews: N/A

  • Gravi

    Entered: October 8th
    Current Status: Development Halted
    User Reviews: Mixed
Notes: The last post from the devs, in late 2014, said they hoped to leave Early Access in February 2015. No news since. The dev studio, Hashbang Games, brought a new game into Early Access in July 2017.

  • SNOW

    Entered: October 10th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Mostly Positive
Notes: The most recent update, in October 2017, has the game at v0.9.2. As far as I can tell development has been slow, but steady.

  • Nuclear Throne

    Entered: October 11th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2015)
    User Reviews: Overwhelmingly Positive

  • Spacebase DF-9

    Entered: October 15th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2014)
    User Reviews: Overwhelmingly Negative
Notes: Basically Tim Schafer and his studio Double Fine grossly misused development funds and, without the money to continue development, decided to kick Spacebase DF-9 out of Early Access long before it was ready.

  • Space Engineers

    Entered: October 23rd
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Very Positive

  • Dungeon Dashers

    Entered: October 25th
Current Status: Development Halted (2015) [see here]
    User Reviews: N/A
Notes: The most recent update was in September 2014. Since then the only post from the devs was in mid 2015, talking about remaking the game in the Unity Engine. What appears to be the case is that the lead dev, Andy Sum, has abandoned the game after his other game, Crossy Road, started bringing in millions for him. The Steam store page has been removed, though Dungeon Dashers remains purchasable through the official website.

  • Project Zomboid

    Entered: November 8th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Very Positive
Notes: Far from abandoned, though progress towards a few specific major feature additions (such as NPCs) is painfully slow. Regardless, there are weekly development posts to read and updates come fairly frequently.

  • Assetto Corsa

    Entered: November 8th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2014)
    User Reviews: Very Positive

  • Wrack

    Entered: November 11th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2014)
    User Reviews: Mostly Positive

  • Vox

    Entered: November 12th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Mostly Negative
Notes: The most recent update was in June 2016. The game's creator, "AlwaysGeeky", has declared the project open-source (available through Github), and as such has no developer or publisher listed on the Steam store page, and somehow Valve allows the game to be available for sale anyways.

  • Kingdoms Rise

    Entered: November 18th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Mixed
Notes: The most recent update was July 7th 2017, and it has been in Beta since December 2016. Otherwise though, there doesn't seem to be much communication from the devs. Flyleap Studios have released two other games while Kingdoms Rise is in Early Access, though as they call themselves "Flyleap Studios Pty. Ltd." on the Kingdoms Rise store page but just "Flyleap Studios" on the other games' pages they will not show if you search by the developer name (see the links).

  • Maia

    Entered: December 3rd
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Mixed
Notes: The most recent update and the fifth update this year, brought the game to v.064 this past October. In late November the devs said they'd be posting a new roadmap this past week, though it has yet to be seen.

  • Starbound

    Entered: December 4th
    Current Status: Fully Released (2016)
    User Reviews: Very Positive

  • Rust

    Entered: December 11th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Very Positive
Notes: The most recent update was December 7th, and prior to that there have been frequent updates. It should be noted that in early 2017 project lead Garry Newman wrote "our plan is to add a bit more help to the game [...] and then quietly slip out of Early Access." That said, the most recent update doesn't really seem to have much focus on the new player experience, so it seems unclear to me if Garry's description is accurate. Today being December 11th marks the 4th anniversary of being in Early Access.

  • 7 Days to Die

    Entered: December 13th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Very Positive
Notes: Updates and patches flow steadily (the most recent being October 2017), but there's no exit from Early Access in sight. Console ports were released in mid 2016.

  • DayZ

    Entered: December 16th
Current Status: Still in Early Access
    User Reviews: Mixed
Notes: Updates are painfully sparse (averaging 1 or 2 a year at this point) though there are biweekly development posts. The next update, v0.63, is termed as the Beta phase as it marks the complete removal of all legacy code from the game's engine. Bohemia says that "the Beta update and any further 0.63 updates, up to 1.0, will happen in 2018."

So, those are the oldest games to have gone through Steam Early Access. By the end of this week all of them will have been in Early Access for more than 4 years.

Basic stats:

41% (16/39) have left Early Access, in a polished, finished state, or not.

  • 67% (8/12) of the games to enter Early Access March 20th, the first day possible, have since had a proper release.
  • 30% (8/27) of the games to enter Early Access in the remainder of 2013 have since had a proper release.

21% (8/39) were abandoned or otherwise had their development postponed indefinitely.
38% (15/39) are still in Early Access, with or without release in sight.
The oldest game still unfinished has been in Early Access for 4 years, 8 months, 22 days.
DayZ in particular has been in Early Access for 3 years, 11 months, 26 days.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Added Castle Story and adjusted stats accordingly. EDIT 2: Starbound.
EDIT 3: Assetto Corsa and Insurgency.

It's all right to be bored with DayZ right now or if you want to play something else.

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 12:18 PM PST

One of the most common complaints I see about DayZ boils down to some variation of "I am just bored with the game."

This inevitably is treated as "evidence" that the game has failed, the Devs have run off with the money and are never coming back, and that DayZ is truly dead.

But, it's really not. It doesn't really mean anything.

Without counting players losing interest who have well over 100 hours (this being a MINIMUM number, because I firmly believe once your drop over 100 hours in something, you clearly enjoyed it, and are likely to get bored at some point), there just really isn't a ton to do in the game right now, and for me personally, once it kind of clicked that eventually, any and all progress made in the game is going to be erased at any update, I sort of just lost interest and decided to wait for Beta, whenever that may be.

At its heart, DayZ is not really a competitive shooter like PUBG, but it is meant to let you experience living and surviving in a wasteland. The very nature of the game being in Early Access sort of kills the immersion of that artifice, and forces the game to ultimately just be a big empty death match. And there are a million other games that do the pure deathmatch cocktail a lot better.

A lot of people are bored with the game. Even the Dev Team has been pretty upfront about the state of 0.62 and how it doesn't have much appeal at the moment. Why would it? It's missing a lot of content right now, including the very thing that controls how it plays. That doesn't mean you can't find enjoyment in it, and clearly people have been able to do that since 2013, but it is only natural that until it gets past that hurdle, people are going to taper off and move on to something else.

While it is easy to equate your own personal boredom or the testimonials of the others, or even Steam numbers as "proof" of the game's demise, the only thing that would truly mean the game is dead, is if the Dev Team had been silent for an extended period of time, and we had no idea what they were working on, or even if something might come out someday. None of that is true.

2018 for Beta is not what anyone wanted to hear, but the truth is that the Dev Team has always provided updates to the community on a regular basis, and demonstrated that the game is making progress behind the scenes. That those updates aren't always as satisfying as you want them to be, or that the Dev Team isn't communicating with you the way you think they should, DOES NOT mean the game is dead or abandoned. There's room to debate the methods of their communication, but that's really another thread.

But don't worry about it if you see player numbers down, and there's this wave of "THE SKY IS FALLING!" hot takes flooding the sub and youtube. DayZ is an easy target for YouTubers to score some views or Redditors to score some karma, because it does have a bad rep, deserving or not. Don't worry about it if you find yourself bored with the game and haven't touched it in months. Players and Streamers will come back in droves with the next update, as they always do. The quality of the product in that update will determine the game's future, not its current state and positive word of mouth can make up for A LOT of time spent waiting. People forget very quickly how mad they once were, once they get the thing they have been waiting for.

Worry about it if Beta comes and it has nothing included in the last (or upcoming) Status Report. Worry about it if the Dev Team suddenly goes radio silent for months. Worry about it if 2018 comes and goes, and we don't see a single update. Worry about it if BI announces DayZ Loot Boxes or DayZ DLC before Beta. Until then, don't waste your energy fretting about this game or being mad about it on the Internet. There are plenty of other things for you to be angry about it, and this really isn't one of them.

As as a side note, please remember that the Developers of this game are human beings and we have no reason to assume they haven't been working in good faith to get this product out to us as quickly as they can, and in the best condition that they can. Until we see actual evidence otherwise, stop going after them on Twitter or anywhere else. You can be critical of the product, your enjoyment of it, or anything else related to Bohemia Interactive without attacking people on a personal level for something they probably have no direct control of it. Development simply taking "a long time" is not a good enough reason for you to tell someone how you'd like them to eat shit and die, even though it may feel like it.

Doors not working!

Posted: 12 Dec 2017 05:32 AM PST

So a couple of friends and myself are looting along the southern coast and I get to some shipping containers, I get an "Open" option when I run up to the door but when I press F, it changes to "Close" but the door stays closed and I cannot enter the container.

I spend a minute or two, trying to open and close the container complaining about everything from "I thought they fixed this" to "The server must be running like a dog".

Turns out I had a collapsible fishing rod in my hand...

Humans of Chernarus #10

Posted: 12 Dec 2017 07:04 AM PST

For those thinking of you considering purchasing DayZ now...

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 10:58 AM PST

Don't.

Before reading this, understand that I have collectively put 2000+ hours into the DayZMod/Standalone. I began playing in March 2012 in the early days. That was a time when DayZ was a magical game. It inspired a prolific genre of survival games, and for good reason- DayZ Mod was one of the greatest PC gaming experiences of all time. It was so popular that it shot up a dead Arma 2 2010 release to the top of the Steam Sales charts in 2012.

When DayZ Standalone was released in December 2013, the community was stoked. People bought it in droves to experience the new and improved Chernarus. We all believed it was the beginning of bringing DayZ to the next level, and the future was bright.

Little did we realize it was the beginning of the end of DayZ.

For the first 6 months, the Bohemia team did in earnest try their best to bring all of the gameplay features that were in DayZ Mod to Standalone- such as vehicles, helicopters, and much of the high level loot in the Mod.

But the new engine that DayZ Standalone was operating on was a complete mess. So much so in fact, that it had to be replaced. However that didn't stop the die hards and fans from playing in droves for the first year through the game-breaking bugs, as many a promises were made and carrot's dangled for the imminent release of all the features missing from the original Mod.

Over time however- these initial roadmaps were the preverbal can kicked down the road, and the language changed from quarterly ETA's to "Soon", or no ETA's at all. The focus became lootable items (of which there is no tradable market btw, and many of these items are useless) and hunting and farming. Zombies, barely touched for years saw minimal updates while in-game animals were tweaked more than actual gameplay. Network bubble issues continued to be troublesome in PVP scenarios. Loot has become so scarce that spending 2-3 hours gearing up before having a decent loadout is now the norm.

That however isn't the worst of it. After nearly 4 years to the day of DayZ Standalone's release and the game still being in an Alpha state- this DayZ Bohemia Dev team has effectively killed the community this game once had.

There was once a time that DayZ Mod/DayZ Standalone had the most brilliant appeal and player stories accompanied with it, and on a grand scale. Thanks to it's popularity, new stories and experiences in full servers were a regular occurrence. Some of my best memories in the 25 years of my gaming were in the Mod/Standalone days thanks to the vibrant community.

Now, it's gone. Arguably DayZ's greatest appeal was the community it produced. Now thanks to the lack of development transparency, ridiculous timelines never met, and overall lack of urgency, that community has effectively fractured and left a void.

It will never be the game that we deserved.

Dayz standalone Full release Refund question.

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 10:16 AM PST

First off I am not a troll just asking a legitimate question.

Is it true that when an early access game enters full release there is a period of time that steam has to offer a refund based on "This game is not what i expected"?

Isn't this in place because a game could market as a FPS in EA but turn into a racing game on release?

If this is true then isn't it a good possibility that Dayz standalone will never exit EA because they don't have the money to refund all the people that would, justifiably, want one?

Haven't played before but saw it's on sale. Are there enough zombies to make single player worthwhile?

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 09:13 AM PST

I'm really interested but truthfully I don't care for multiplayer games. This looks like it could be a fun zombie survival game playing solo but I keep reading there are hardly any zombies. Is this true? I'm interested in 7 Days to Die as well but the crafting looks like a PITA. Thanks!

Current state of DayZ Standalone?

Posted: 11 Dec 2017 01:05 PM PST

So lately I've been kinda craving some DayZ type gameplay, and I'm not really into the whole battle royale scene, been considering taking the plunge and buying escape from tarkov but I wanted to see where DayZ Standalone stands as of december 2017? Is it any good yet? it's been sitting in my library unplayed for ages

EDIT: since some people can't pick up on implications, I bought Standalone at launch, It's not a matter of 'save your money' save your money in this case would mean don't buy escape from tarkov Also why are so many of you downvoting? I was just asking a question of what the current state of the game is
