Self Post Sundays! - November 19, 2017

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 08:09 PM PST

To foster more discussion about the games every Sunday we turn the subreddit into self-post only mode.

Self-Post Sundays are our main discussion day. On those days we only allow text posts directly about the games themselves.

Please save your images, fan art, screenshots, videos, etc to the other days of the week. Use this day to discuss the games. Other posts will be removed.

If there’s one thing Master Mode has taught me it’s that durability and regenerating health don’t mix

Posted: 19 Nov 2017 05:26 AM PST

I finally finished my first Master Mode playthrough two days ago and, while I generally enjoyed it as much as my first time around, I felt constantly frustrated by the mix of durability and regenerating health.

I don't mind if enemies have more health. I don't mind if they're tankier. Both of those are annoying as difficulty modifiers, but I can work around them as I've done before. When enemies can regenerate their health and my weapons keeps breaking, however, I can't help but feel annoyed.

These are two mechanics that simply don't go hand in hand. I understand the challenge it brings and the rationale behind it, but that doesn't make it good. Now, I will say, there were moments where it made the game better, but only a few: the blight fights. In my first playthrough, they all died incredibly fast. In this one, I actually felt challenged.

Calamity Ganon, on the other hand, is perhaps the least fun I've had with a final boss in ages. If you miss a single parry or quick dodge, you potentially lose minutes of progress. Now, I believe punishing a player is in a game's rights and it does add to the experience, especially for a final boss, but I don't feel punished when I miss my chance to attack, I just feel frustrated.

Did you know the Master Sword can lose its power during the fight? I didn't.

While Ganon was annoying, I understand it's meant to be a challenging final obstacle so I can almost let it slide. I never want to fight him again, but I get it.

What I don't get is how utterly useless fighting enemies in the over world is. Master Mode showed me just how little those enemy camps matter. I never wanted to risk losing my weapons against enemies who would keep restoring their health, so I just never bothered until it came time to get material for upgrading. I spent the majority of the game avoiding combat simply because it was never beneficial for me. Regeneration completely discourages an entire aspect of BotW.

I had enough fun where I sunk 50 hours in, did every shrine, fully upgraded the Tunic of the Wild set, and did every main quest. But I was also frustrated enough where I'm certain to never touch Master Mode again.

Botw dungeon/shrine pacing throughout the course of the game

Posted: 19 Nov 2017 08:29 AM PST

Call me over-analytical, but I find myself thinking about this a lot in between gaming sessions. This isn't so much a question for help, but I'm curious how others are (or have) paced the 4 dungeons along with all the shrines and various side quests in the course of gameplay.

For example: after completing a dungeon, do you go straight to the next one? Or do you have a checklist (of sorts) to accomplish before proceeding to the next one? Head straight to the nearest town to do side quests? Run around aimlessly to find things to do, or fill in the map to get more regions on the map? Do you not think about it all and do whatever you want? How did you pace the game play?

As of this point, I have 50-something shrines completed and two dungeons complete, along with having the Master Sword and Hylian Shield. I seem to be forcing myself to do more shrines before proceeding to up my stats, as (I think) my ultimate plan is to have almost everything done for when I take on Hyrule- all memories, all (or most) shrines, side quests, etc. Curious about others approach for perspective.

Lastly, I apologize if this has been discussed- I did not see anything along these lines posted!

Best weapons to display in BotW?

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 09:41 PM PST

I just got the option to display weapons/bows/shields. What are you guys displaying? I'm having a hard time deciding what looks cool enough for the shields/bows to show. I'm gonna show all the great elemental swords, Revali's bow, a savage lynel bow, and a savage lynel shield.....can i get a second hylian shield to display?

Can you no longer get your Hylian Sheild back in update 1.3.3?

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 05:10 PM PST

In the new update for Breath Of The Wild you can't get a new Hylian Sheild from Granté (Tarrey Town) after you break yours. Is there any other way to replace it? Six Years Later: Skyward Sword Review

[BOTW] Is there anything worth exploring on the mountain ridges to the left of Abandoned Mine leading up to and including Eldin Great Skeleton in the Eldin area?

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 10:16 AM PST

I usually like to explore every inch of an area before moving on but when I casually mentioned to my friend that I found exploring the mountains a bit tedious, he said that apart from the Talus for a mission and a single Korok Seed, there is NOTHING in that area, and the area containing the skeleton only becomes worth exploring when you leave Eldin and cross over into North Central Hyrule (whatever that's called, haven't been there yet).

It would save me some time if that were the case.

Well, I'm enjoying myself in OOT 3D.

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 01:53 PM PST

I brought a 2DS and want to ask some stuff about the games.

It's important follow the timeline?:

  • I finished The minish cap. Hard game in terms of realize where to put the bombs.
  • Started (currently on halt) playing Phantom Hourglass in my R4. (I don't know how the community is about this so don't make a circlejerk plz)
  • Started A link between worlds (on halt too).
  • And playing at the moment OOT 3D.

So my questions, I have a Wii/PC capable to run Wii(GC) games/2DS/PSP.

  • How worth is Skyward Sword (I have to bother my family for a couple of days to play them, you know)?

  • Is any worth playing Four Swords? Is a local MP game.

I want to ask too: The N64 Zelda are really bad at least in emulation, how good are the controllers in a real console? I was annoyed to play it under 20 fps or some like that.

Thanks!
