Smash Summit 5 // Nov. 2nd - 5th // Los Angeles

Beyond the Summit aims to create a "behind the scenes" oriented tournament, inspired by TakeTV's Homestory Cup in StarCraft 2, where the fans can see sides of their favorite players that they don't normally get to see. To achieve this the tournament is held at the BTS House in Los Angeles, where the crew currently lives and works.

The two highest placing non-invited players at GameTyrant Expo 2017 and The Big House 7 filled the qualifier slots for this event. In the event of a tie, a Best of 5 set would be played to determine who would qualify.Shroomed qualified with a 5-6th place finish at GameTyrant Expo 2017. Wizzrobe and S2J both finished in 7-8th place at The Big House 7, necessitating a tiebreaker which Wizzrobe won 3-2.

aMSa's tag shows his sense of humour...

Posted: 03 Nov 2017 07:09 PM PDT

You probably all remember the drama with the katakana in the Smash Summit 5 logo being wrong before. They wrote "ツ" instead of "ッ" , making it read "sumitsuto" instead of "samitto".

The event organizers fixed the spelling, but aMSa chose his in game tag as "サミツト", i.e. "samitsuto". I thought that was funny. I noticed it in his pools game vs Wizzy.

I didn't tune in that early, so I don't know if anyone pointed that out yet.

Who wants more Mafia at Smash Summit 5?

Posted: 03 Nov 2017 07:28 AM PDT

So the schedule says that we'll have two nights of Jenga and no more Mafia at Smash summit 5 which to me is kinda disappointing. I just get the feeling a lot of people(myself included) have Mafia as one of their favorite events at Summit, and I personally don't think Jenga will be very fun to watch for several hours two nights in a row.

That's why I made this post, I thought that MAYBE if this gets enough recognition they'll change the schedule and put in more Mafia on one of the remaining nights to please the viewers(if that's what the veiwers want ofc).

EDIT: This isn't saying Jenga is bad, I still want to give that a chance, I'm just saying I'd rather give Mafia two nights and Jenga one before we know if Jenga is a big success or not.

Why is Mafia always played peculiarly at Smash Summit?

Posted: 03 Nov 2017 03:38 AM PDT

TL;DR: Playing with uncommon rules that I've never seen used, heavily Mafia-favored every time, roles and rules not being introduced to balance things for this group of players, and common Moderator mistakes.

Just finished watching the VODs for Mafia at Smash Summit (game 1 and game 2) and, as someone who enjoys playing Social Deduction games frequently, there are lots of things that I find strange in the way they play Mafia (or Werewolf for the modern retheming).

Usually the game starts with a special night phase ("The First Night") where the Mafiosi awake just to find out who else is in the Mafia. Then they go back to sleep without killing anyone. The Detective also gets a check during this non-killing phase. By letting the Mafia kill someone during the first night, it tilts the game in favor of the Mafia and makes someone not get to play at all!

During the subsequent night phases, giving the Mafia multiple kills heavily tilts the game more in favor to the Mafia. Usually the Mafia only kills 1 person during these night phases. If they want to save time, there are many other ways to do it like forcing a day kill (many variants can be used for the voting/nomination process like Two Player Accusations (Big Brother), Secret Ballot (Survivor), 1,2,3,Point (German), and other variants explained in the rulebook), or setting the timer to a shorter amount (10 minutes is long for a 16/17-player group... it's typically 30 seconds per player still alive).

After a person is killed, usually their role is revealed (sometimes just allegiance depending on the variant you wish to play). Not revealing anything favors the Mafia. It is a known variant to not reveal anything on death, but usually this variant is reserved for more experienced play groups who have played together before and where there are more special roles assigned.

Maybe they thought the Doc would helps balance things back towards the Villagers, but it's actually not that big. Just for comparison, official rules say the Doc role adds a "+3" tilt for the Villagers, but just playing with people who don't know each other (Amsa, Blea, Rishi, etc.) adds a "+5" tilt for the Mafia. There are many other roles that can be used with this size play group to mix things up each game and to help balance things.

Having a timer is also known to hurt the Villagers (even though every game should use a timer). And usually there's a timer during the night as well, where no one gets killed if the mafia can't agree on someone to kill within the time limit (although it usually never comes to this). You can see the official timer app here.

Even though the official rules say there's no right or wrong way to play, Smash Summit Mafia is as close to wrong as you can get with it being to so Mafia-favored. Even the Moderator was trying to help the Villagers kill a Mafioso at the end of game 2. There are many known ways to balance the game, and if the Mafia are winning so much (which they should with such imbalance), they should change things up to balance things for the play group. This is the fifth summit with janky Mafia rules!

And speaking of the Moderator, the Smash Summit moderators always do the noob thing by standing in the middle and talking. I don't understand why people don't try to use clues based on how the Moderator is directing their voice. They can try to spin in circles to conceal who they're talking to, but a much better way is to just stand outside the group and keep your voice projecting in one direction. With the horseshoe seating pattern that they have at the current Summit, the Moderator should be able to stand at the opening of the horseshoe (where the camera is) and not have to move to see everyone, give cues, or direct play.

I can go on and on about things I would do differently, but at this point, I doubt anyone is actually still reading this. Since Halloween just passed, I'll just leave you with this Mafia/Werewolf-related video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cIK6Kyn3NM

Why is Alex19 at every summit?

Posted: 03 Nov 2017 02:38 PM PDT

Is he invited as a commentator? Not really a fan of his commentary and I've noticed that lots of people aren't either, so I'm not sure why he gets invited over other more popular commentators (if it does happen that he's invited for commentary).

FAQs:

  1. This is the fifth Battle Gateway tournament of 2017. The winner of the first was Shippu, while the second and third was by aMSa and the fourth by Rudolph.

  2. Battle Gateway takes place on East Japan (Tokyo). Players such as Rudolph, Kounotori, and Nanashi who live in West Japan (Osaka, Hiroshima) as a result mostly did not attend this tournament. aMSa could not attend because of Smash Summit, while Yu is no longer in Japan.

  3. This has been the first regional Japanese tournament in a long time. The last one was in July 8th 2017, BGW 17. Since then, there have only been Master Hand monthlies in West Japan and the occasional smashfest in East Japan.

  4. Fun fact: Flash, Japan's legendary former best player and retired Sheik, commentated this tourney. He also interviewed Cactuar, which can be found here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/187229438?t=05h56m51s

  5. Japan defended their turf from the Western invaders once again, but this time without any of their top 4 players! This is the second time Japan has prevented a Top 100 competitor from reaching Grand Finals in 2017, the first time being at BGW 16 against darkatma. Foreign competition included Cactuar and Green Ranger, who received 3rd and 17th respectively.

  6. Zoma defeated Cactuar 3-1 with Mewtwo to qualify for Winners Finals! Shippu eliminated Cactuar in Losers Finals with a reverse 3-0.

  7. This has been a breakthrough tournament for Zoma. Though Gucci, aMSa, Rudolph, and Yu were all absent (Japan's top 4), BGW 18 is Zoma's first big tournament win in Japan after numerous 3rd, 5th, and 9th placings for the past few years. He defeated Cactuar on the way and also managed to slay Shippu twice: a player Zoma has never defeated until today. With today's victory, he stands within striking distance of Japan's top 5.

  8. Shippu, Japan's best Peach, was formerly in argument for best in Japan in 2016. Unfortunately, due to small data sets and a lack of significant wins in 2017, it was and still is difficult to tell where Shippu stands among Japan's top players today. BGW 18 is no different: the absence of the rest of Japan's Top 4 effectively made Shippu the best Japanese player in attendance. However, he went 1-2 against Zoma, a player he had never lost to until today. It's not all doom and gloom though; Shippu managed to defeat Cactuar in a nail-biting 3-2 set while also lengthening the gap between him and Sanne, one of Japan's best Fox players. 2nd place is still nothing to sneeze at, and with the first BGW of 2017 under his belt, he still firmly holds onto the title of one of Japan's best hidden bosses.

  9. What happened to Plata this tournament, one of Japan's top 10 and a favorite to make top 8? Unfortunately, he had an early exit at 13th. He (supposedly) lost to Negu, a solid Japanese Peach in pools. This gave him an early fight against Zoma in bracket, where he was sent to losers. There he fought his way to 13th, where his run was promptly stopped by the player that eliminated him last BGW, Massun, a Fox player. There was a fun argument concerning who the second best Yoshi was behind aMSa, Plata or Netherlands' Avalancer. Unfortunately, recent results heavily skew for the latter.

  10. Yu, the Mexican-Japanese Falco who snatched the spot of Japan's best Falco and his placing among Japan's top 3, is no longer studying in Japan and is now moving back to his country of origin, Mexico, where he'll be facing the likes of Javi, Aza, and Twin. It's a bitter pill to swallow; one one hand, this now means that Gucci, aMSa, Rudolph, and Shippu will face significantly less pressure when aiming for the title of best in Japan while also opening up a position for players like Zoma, Sanne, K.F, and Kounotori to claim 5th best. On the other hand, Japan (East Japan in particular) just lost another great source of competition and practice in their isolated and struggling region. Hopefully this will only be a minor setback in Japan Melee's struggle to survive in 2017.

  11. It wouldn't be a FAQ section if it didn't end with a final point about Japan's best. Unfortunately, with the absence of most of Japan's best players, BGW 18 hasn't changed much in terms of who is in the lead. Rudolph still has the most consistent records against everyone in Japan, but still has a (albeit slight) losing record against aMSa. aMSa holds a winning record over Rudolph and most of Japan, but still is overall less consistent than Rudolph with losing records against Gucci and Sanne. Everyone else is close, but not close enough to be able to refute against Rudolph or aMSa's positions. With no BGW or Crazy Hand scheduled for the future, BGW 18 may be the last big Japanese tournament of 2017. With that in mind, it's possible that 2017 might end like it began: with Rudolph in the lead, but with a bleeding wound from aMSa latching on from behind.

  12. Kotaku wrote a fantastic article on the struggling Japanese Melee scene, containing interview excerpts of many of Japan's community leaders: https://compete.kotaku.com/super-smash-bros-melee-community-has-it-tough-in-japan-1820068971. I know some people may have understandable hesitance towards reading Kotaku articles, but please give it a shot, it's very well-written and researched.
