Halo: Legacy of Onyx Discussion Thread

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 05:20 AM PST

Hey everybody.

Halo: Legacy of Onyx releases today.

From Amazon:

"An original full-length novel set in the Halo universe and based on the New York Times bestselling video game series!

Molly Patel was only seven years old when the alien alliance known as the Covenant destroyed her homeworld and killed her family. As one of the few to escape the glassing of Paris IV, and despite the United Nations Space Command winning the war on behalf of humanity, Molly never forgot how much she had lost.

Nine years later, when her adoptive parents—research scientists specializing in ancient Forerunner technology—are called to the mysterious and wondrous place known as Onyx, Molly vehemently objects. It's not so much that Molly's concerned about relocating to inside a spherical construct the diameter of an entire solar system, but the fact that she also has to live alongside members of the same alien species that murdered her family. And when the Servants of the Abiding Truth—a violent ex-Covenant sect under the guidance of the notorious Pale Blade—somehow makes its way inside this supposedly impregnable sphere, Molly is now forced to consider if she and her new parents have made a terrible and fatal mistake in coming here...."

When I play Halo 5 I only play Warzone

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 04:40 PM PST

I love Halo 5's Warzone and it's the only thing I play when I play Halo 5. Yes I'm still going strong after it's release and I was never too fond of Halo 5's arena although I was really competitive in Reach. I love Warzone because you can get 50 kills in a match if you're really good. I love the strategic play to it by defending and attacking bases and playing the game tuned to your own style. For Example I can be stealthy, attach a silencer and active camo and go by myself. Or I can get Wheelman and take a banshee and go on a killing spree. This was like Hemmorage in Reach where you could get the sniper and set yourself up to snipe, get the shotgun and camp in the base for objectives, or get a gang and use the warthog, or get the wraith and plow through the map. I think it's the simmilarities in these types of gameplay that keep me coming back because I get to play the game my own way, going solo or with my team.

New Halo 2 PC (Project Cartographer) Server + Leave some suggestions!

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 04:59 PM PST

Hey guys, just wanted to make a note that I have just put up a new server on H2V that runs Team Slayer and objective game types (server name is "TS & Team Skirmish"). It is currently set to be 4v4 but I might bump that up to 5v5. It currently has Team Slayer, CTF, Oddball, Assault, and will probably be updating it with King of the Hill and Territories soon as well.

A big issue I think the Project currently has is game types and map variety in some servers. As of right now the server list is mostly dominated by BR Snipes and Coag CTF servers, which is fun but not everyone wants to play that all the time. Like I said, this is something I hope to fix with this server and possibly more to come. While you can always make your own custom game and / or your own server, it's nice to just already have it done.

I also would like to hear some playlist suggestion that anyone here who plays would like to see. Just drop a line below!

The BR is better than I initially thought.

It sounds obvious, but you have to make sure the reticle stays on the target the whole time it's firing. In that way it's more like the Halo 3 BR, you have to track the target a bit. I racked up 10 kills with it in my last game.

What are your thoughts on Gabriel Thorne? And would you prefer to have had Buck replaced with him in Halo 5?

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 11:47 AM PST

Why am I bringing him up five years after the release of halo 4? Well, I've been thinking about halo 5 and it's cast of characters recently. It occurred to me that Gabriel might have been a better option to put in the game than Buck, and I just wanted to see what the community thought about my opinion. As well as generally asking about their opinions too.

Halo CE BTB

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 04:22 PM PST

I'm doing another round of Halo CE BTB Customs tomorrow night at 7pm NA central time in celebration of Halo CE's 16th Anv on the MCC. If your interested send me a message over XBL. GT is MasterCh1ef87. Please have a mic and play to have fun. I regularly host Halo CE Customs with full lobbies quite regularly and I run all maps even the PC maps. If you can't make it tomorrow I'll do some more BTB Customs on Friday at 9pm central time and Saturday at 2pm central time. I'm looking to add some new faces to the CE group that I game with regularly. There's quite a lot of us actually a couple hundred to be exact based off my friends list so the more the merrier. Don't worry my host is amazing and can handle 16 people with no problems at all.

343: please bring back the playlist, with the forge maps, as a permanent playlist - it got me back into Halo 5 and then it was gone.

What are your favorite memories of playing local multiplayer?

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 08:43 PM PST

To this day my older brother and I still play Halo 3, 1v1, split screen, guardian, BR and Carbine only, no power weapons, equipment enabled, 15 Kills, no suicide penalty.

For 10 years almost all our games end up with us going 14 - 14 before one of us gets a clutch headshot with the BR. We have this toy WWE belt that we reward to the winner, the winner of each game would be declared the new World Heavyweight Champion, the belt would swap hands at least 3 times a day. There was a week where my brother never lost until my cousin beat him and then I beat her.

Every once in a while we'll switch to Halo 2.

343's Banshee Nerf Is Problematic

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 01:05 PM PST

When 343 added a seconds-long cool down to performing banshee flips last week, they addressed one of Halo 5's longest-standing issues: its overpowered banshee.

But I think 343 addressed the problem poorly.

Let me get this out of the way first: I agree that the vanilla h5 banshee was overpowered and needed some sort of nerf; I only have qualms with the way 343 decided to nerf it.

The banshee was the only vehicle in H5 with a meaningful skill curve, aside perhaps from the wraith. Every other vehicle in the game is devoid of interesting mechanics and is simple to drive and aim, meaning the only difference between good and bad users is their ability to keep a safe distance from enemy players.

The banshee's skill curve centered on its use of flips both to make banshee bombs fly faster and to snap turn (the ability to instantly change direction after a flip).

This stuff lets you fly the banshee like this

Adding the flip cool down drastically lowers the skill cap. Without the ability to chain snap turns together with banshee bombs (which the vast majority of players don't know how to do), the vehicle becomes limited to playing passively.

With the new patch, the banshee can no longer be flown well. Pilots are now forced to fly unintelligently by an arbitrary cool down, and skilled banshee pilots now look like this

Rather than cutting off the top of the skill curve, 343 should make the banshee harder--but not impossible--to use well.

Time to be constructive though: Here's some alternative nerfs that I and others have thought of.

Note: I would have preferred 343 adopt all of the changes below rather than implement the cool down nerf.

  1. Remove the banshee's shields:
The banshee has too much health and making it drastically weaker would force players into smarter play. There's no reason pilots should be able to tank a sniper shot (and more) without taking any permanent damage. If it's not possible to remove the shield, just lower the vehicle's total health pool.

  2. Make flips consume the boost meter:
I'd recommend that backflips use half the meter and side flips use a quarter of the meter. If the whole meter gets used up, force players to wait until it's back to 100% before allowing them to boost or flip again.

  3. Drastically reduce red reticle range and bullet magnetism/auto-aim for green bombs:
Again, forcing players to actually be good with the vehicle rather than use the auto aim as a crutch

  4. Allow weapons to maintain lock on through banshee flips:
I don't think this would be very effective unless 343 gave hydra-level tracking to rockets and fuel rods, but I see it suggested a lot around the community.

  5. Increase the distance at which enemy players can hijack a banshee:
This would go a long way toward punishing pilots for making mistakes.

I'm not sure whether 343 is even technically capable of implementing the first two suggestions, but I hope they keep them in mind for the Halo 6 banshee rather than keeping the cooldown.

As someone who was a top-tier banshee pilot in h5, it kinda sucks to see them cut the legs out from under the vehicle like this and I hope they'll reconsider their nerf, if not in H5, then at least in h6.
