Need For Speed: Payback is The Crew

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 05:02 AM PST

After the 2015 Need For Speed which I adored, thanks to its throwback to the Underground days and awesome cruising atmosphere, I was really looking forward to Ghost Games' next take on the franchise.

I got my hands on Need For Speed: Payback on release and have sunk some considerable hours into it, but man - this game is The Crew with a smaller world, both of which have left me pretty disappointed...

Here's a few things I've noticed that are reminiscent of The Crew:

  • The same awful Performance Upgrade System: Performance Parts are dealt out as numbered cards via an RNG system.

  • Tight purse strings when it comes to handing over cash to persuade you into in-game Paid Currency: It's even set up in a way that no matter what pack of Speed Points you buy, you have change from whatever you buy with them in-game. The leftover is just small enough that you can't afford anything else, thus requiring more Speed Points to make them usable.

  • A financially unforgiving Car Class and Visual Upgrade System: The game forces you to pick a Class for the particular Car, with no options to Preview Parts/Change Class. Once you drop the hefty sum of cash, you're stuck with your purchase, with no way of changing its Class if you're not a fan of the visual upgrades.

  • Not all Cars can be all Classes: You can't have an off-road Lamborghini/supercar, and only the 4 Derelict Cars seem to become the monsters you see in the trailers, and only for the Class it shows them fully upgraded as when you first recover them.

  • A good looking but empty Open World: There is just no-one else around aside from a handful of AI Traffic.

  • A Story worthy of /r/iamverybadass: It's cringe turned up to 11. Nobody talks like the wanks in either of these games.

After looking forward to The Crew since it was announced, it was a constant disappointment for me once it arrived with its tight-ass economy, terrible upgrade system, and dull repetitiveness. Need For Speed: Payback feels like I'm playing it all over again, to the point that it's seriously uncanny.
