Fallout - (FO4) Today I stopped caring and started to love Chems

(FO4) Today I stopped caring and started to love Chems

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 08:15 AM PST

In fallout 4, or any real fallout game I've never actually done chems, as I felt the addiction'd be bad, and really shit comparing to the bonuses. Then I thought "wait, chemist 200% longer, and complete inability to be addicted from chem resistant? okay, let's try" so I started to make drugs, not your normal jet and buffout, but your wacky combinations and overpowered chems, installing the expanded chemistry mod so I can make things like Fury, Overdrive and X-Cell. I now traveled to a location, and walked around...to find a deathclaw! A legendary albino one at that! I quicksaved, and consumed around 30 fucking different things, and beat the piss out of the deathclas, with my machete and I said aloud "That was awesome"

TD:LR, if you get chemist and chem resistant, just go have fun dude how did I find this out sooner? oh jeez, survival mode'll be slightly less awful

Radiation and Distances: Why Little Shaun is Perfectly Preserved for Institute Cooking

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 09:54 AM PST

It's me again. This particular rant of mine is devoted to radiation, nuclear weapons, and Vault 111. There's a common misconception around that Nate, Nora, and Shaun would have been terribly irradiated or flayed alive.

Judging by the intro and the placement of the nuclear bomb, it's a bit difficult to gauge precisely where the bomb struck. The precise direction is almost directly south-east, at cell -10,-11 (roughly east of the Westinghouse Estate). The Cambridge Crater is located in an SEE direction, whereas the Glowing Sea and the Crater of Atom is located in an almost perfectly southern direction from Vault 111. For the purposes of this article, I'm assuming the Crater of Atom is the intended choice (there's nothing new about devs moving things about in development, see Colusa/Navarro in Fallout 2).

Points of reference are as follows:

Sanctuary Hills/Vault 111: Elm Street bridge over Sudbury River in Concord

Crater of Atom: Intersection of High/Woodland Street and Washington Street in Holliston, MA

The distance between these areas is ~27 km or ~17 miles in a straight line.

Distances gauged using the Fallout 4 map (https://fallout.gamepedia.com/Fallout_4_map) and Google Maps.

Given the available data, I assumed the following for the purposes of this article:

  1. The nuke was a groundburst, given the crater.
  2. The yield was an estimate five megatons, basing on the size of the Glowing Sea (I used the 5 psi overpressure range as boundary, with NUKEMAP).
  3. The point of detonation was in Holliston, MA.

You can see the effect of detonation under the following link:

http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/?&kt=5000&lat=42.2000966&lng=-71.4245049&airburst=0&hob_ft=0&casualties=1&fallout=1&ff=50&fatalities=45058&injuries=175769&psi_1=542938&zm=11

Now, to explore the implications.

First of all, the Survivors are well outside the overpressure range, which for the five megaton warhead is some eight kilometers at the most (the 5 psi overpressure radius, which results in the destruction of most buildings in range) and outside the thermal radiation radius guaranteeing third degree burns. They are safe from death by being crushed or burned to death (as can be seen up top and by the roads all the way down to Natick and Lake Cochituate, the people there and the buildings were also pretty safe as well).

Second, the exposure to radiation is negligible. At higher nuclear weapon yields, the effects of thermal radiation and overpressure are far more pronounced, as radiation emission does not scale with yield. You can consult the following article for a rough estimation of radiation exposure for yields of 1 kt, 20 kt, 1 Mt, and 20 Mt. As you can see, a twentyfold increase in tonnage (1 Mt to 20 Mt) increases the effective range of irradiation by a factor of two, not twenty.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_nuclear_explosions#Ionizing_radiation

Why does it matter? All nuclear radiation is subject to the inverse-square law, namely, the effects of radiation fall off with range and the fall-off is significant: The distance is squared for the purposes of calculation, i.e. a twofold increase in distance will cause a fourfold decrease, a ninefold an eightyonefold decrease, and so on and so forth. When factoring in other variables (the relevant table is provided in the document preserved on fourmilab.ch), the effective gamma-ray dose for a five megaton airburst warhead is reduced to 30 rads at a distance of a little under 5000 yards or 5000 meters. At the nearly thirty kilometer distance, the dose is negligible.

https://www.fourmilab.ch/etexts/www/effects/eonw_8.pdf

Third, everyone calculating these things has to keep one thing in mind: These are all mathematical calculations that make a great deal of assumptions and ignore many environmental factors. They are usually made with the assumption of a perfectly level area with no environmental obstacles and perfect atmospheric conditions. As such, the actual effect on the Survivors would be further reduced, due to the fact there's plenty of obstacles between the point of detonation and Vault 111 and, as seen at the actual crater, the weapon was a groundburst, not an airburst.

Last, if the Survivors stayed topside for an extended period of time (say, an hour), they would have been exposed to severe radiation from the nuclear fallout... If they moved into Concord or Lexington, that is. The prevailing winds for October blow from the south and the west in the Boston area (roughly 60%), which would push the fallout towards Maine and along the coast. However, since they entered the Vault almost immediately after the nuclear detonation, they were sheltered from the nuclear fallout (which falls out of the sky after the nuclear detonation, typically on the order of an hour or so).

In summary: Little Shaun is perfectly preserved for the Institute to harvest.

Imagine if you met Jason Bright at the Glowing Sea in Fallout 4?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 03:10 PM PST

Playing New Vegas again, just realized that Jason Bright (The Ghoul leader at RepConn Site) talks about a highly radioactive zone in the far Beyond. I know it could really the ground zero of really, any bomb detonation but imagine if it was actually the Glowing Sea in Boston? Would have been interesting.

What do we NOT want in the next Fallout?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 01:10 PM PST

There is always a lot of talk about the things we want in the next game. And working on the assumption that a) a small team at Bethesda is working on at least gathering ideas and drawing up concepts for the next title and b) they lurk in here now and then, I thought we should have a discussion about what we don't want.

Given the recent discussion across the board about sales and distribution models like paid mods or lootboxes or microtransactions I like to emphasize that I'm talking strictly about content, mechanics, story elements and stuff like that.

I'll start: I don't want vehicles in the next game. No cars or planes or bikes or Brahmin carriages.

They are probably going to make the map even bigger, it would be a logical step in terms of lore given more time has passed since the war (most likely they won't go backwards), but I want to conquer whatever wasteland we end up in on foot. True if there was a vehicle mechanic in the game, I could always choose not to use it, but then the enemies will and I do not wanna chase super mutants in a buggy like in Borderlands. Please, don't psychojet and drive, folks!

108th Baby! (Gone Alien?!)

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 11:40 AM PST

So this isn't my own observation, saw it on the Facebook group for Fallout Fanatics. Elliott Tercorienan (Mothership Zeta) and Nate are both soldiers from the 108th infantry, albeit from different battalions. Both were frozen and woke up in the future and both believe that everyone they've ever known is dead. Here's where my theory begins. Now at this point, Elliott has been commanding a starship for about 10 years which could explain why the Alien scout ship crashes in Boston, perhaps it was shot down? Anyways, I'm thinking that a meet up between two prewar soldiers would be badass had it been implemented, but that's just me.

I recently purchased Fallout 4 for the Xbox one. It came with a fallout 3 voucher (I already own fo3) and I would love to give it away. Tell me what is your favorite fallout game and why to enter the giveaway. Winner will be chosen at random. Good luck fellow vault dwellers

I was talking to my uncle, who I gave a PC to with Fallout 4 installed to help pass the time during medical recovery, and the topic of settlements came up.

Could anyone help me with this TTW/Fallout 3 issue?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 10:37 AM PST

So I have Charon as a follower, and he's not recognising me as his leader anymore and just telling me to talk toAhzrukhal (who is obviously already dead, and has sold me Charons contract), this is a huge bummer because ive put a lot of time in to this character and Charon was holding a lot of my unique weapons and armor. Ive tried respawning Ahzrukhal, but he wont re-sell the contract. Tried respawning charon, still tells me to talk to Ahzrukhal... tried spawning in another contract, making Charon non-essential (it wont let me for some reason)

So if anyone has any ideas how I can dismiss or kill him I would hugely appreciate it because its killing my game right now, im up to getting the geck so if Charon wont leave I won't be able to get Fawkes :(

Bethesda's response to the major Xbox puddles/eyes glitch going on for the past week

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST

"Hi all,

Thank you for your patience and feedback while we've been investigating this issue. To follow up, this will be fixed in our next update. In the meantime, some have mentioned that clearing their cache has fixed or temporarily fixed this issue for them."

For anyone unaware, Xbox one users have, since the most recent update, experienced a glitch where puddles and wet surfaces take on a strange rainbow color, as well as having NPCs eyes become strange reds or greens. It might sound minor but it ruins immersion completely. Everyone who has tried thing like hard resets/clearing their caches reports a fix that's only temporary. There are mods to help, but surely they will conflict when the issue is actually fixed.

Idk this seems like a really lame response. Why not roll back the update? If that isn't possible, surely this is urgent enough to issue a new update now.

https://bethesda.net/community/topic/126267/oil-slick-weird-eyes-bug/103

Edit: I know I'm probably being dramatic, but I don't get why this post was at 100% for 2 hours and now it's at 63% an hour later

Recruiting Trader Rylee

Rylee: I'm confused.

Rinse and repeat

Seriously how do you recruit this trader? I've already have 18 people in Sanctuary where there's more than enough foods, water, beds and defense as well as having best merchants to trade with (Vault Tec Rep, Tina and Anne).

Katie Thompson - I'm So Blue (Ska Version)

Started a second NV playthrough after watching some of Oxhorn's videos and realizing how much I missed the first time around. It's amazing how much more sense the DLCs make when you play them in order, too—not to mention that the Brotherhood really aren't as big of dicks as I thought they were. We got off to a bad start the first time because they put a bomb collar on me after I already had some bad memories of the Sierra Madre and then made their distaste for the NCR, who I was working with at the time, abundantly clear, but this time around I didn't piss off Veronica and brought her with me when I went to Hidden Valley, and got to see their warmer, fluffier side. It's a much nicer experience now that I'm working with the guys with power armor and plasma rifles instead of having to fight like 30 of them.

Sneak Thief (Fallout 3)

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 04:54 AM PST

I've done this before, ages ago; but its not something I can remember how to do. I've stolen Fawkes's Hammer, for obvious reasons (Melee Superiority).. I'm nearing that point again, and I'm not sure how I can steal Equipped Items and Armor again.. (Because I plan on doing so in The Zeta DLC, and other DLC in the Future, for obvious Moral reasons lol)

I'd like some help figuring out the skills, or perks needed in order to pickpocket Equipped items and armor. :)

There is no Subreddit for Fallout 3 as far as I know. So its marked Fallout.

What would be the best character idea for a new fo4 playthrough?

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 03:09 AM PST

What do you guys think the best idea for a character would be to start a new (vanilla) playthrough of FO4? Things like skills speech options appearance? Also factions questlines and combat styles would help

One more reason Creation Club sucks

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 05:19 PM PST

It made kinggath, the creator of sim settlements quit modding, for now anyway. I'm sorry Bethesda but sim settlements is free and better than anything that will ever be on creation club.

My Teacher Will Give Me A Free A if I Find Out What Happened to Eliza Gibbons/Nathaniel Gibbons

Posted: 15 Nov 2017 05:08 PM PST

He talked to me about the story of Eliza Gibbons from Far Harbor (The Cranberry Island Item Bunker) during the whole class period. He couldn't find out where the corpse of Eliza is and he EVEN CALLED BETHESDA TO FIND OUT. He was laughed at of course. So if any of you guys know what happened to either of them that'd be most appreciated.

For those of you I see every day experiencing Fallout for the first time, and to us old fans who may have forgotten, here is the first episode of the greatest Fallout fan content ever made: Nuka Break.

Posted: 14 Nov 2017 09:50 PM PST

Nuka Break S1E1. Produced in 2011 by the film team Wayside Creations (now called Wayside Digital), the props, sets, effects, characters, every ounce of content lovingly crafted for Nuka Break just bleeds with a passion for the franchise that we all share. It may not have the highest production value or the best direction but by Todd god it's got the most heart I've ever seen put into a fan project. The entire series clocks in at just about two hours from beginning to end across two seasons, so it's perfect to spend an afternoon watching.
