Infographic | SMITE Patch 4.12 Recap

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 10:25 AM PDT

Really, really old Smite was really, really weird

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 12:10 PM PDT

So decided to go on the wiki and look through some of the really old patches. My goal was to see how different the game was back then, and oh boy, I got some results. Early Smite was downright bizarre in some ways. I'd heard everything about release Guan Yu and stuff like buying stats or side jungles, but some of this less gamebreaking stuff is even more interesting! Anyway, without further adieu, the first patch in smite history:

Closed Beta Version 0.1.907.0

  • Mute function didn't exist in the first iteration of Smite, only being added with this first wave of changes. As far as I know, yes, Ra would've had the same laugh back then.
  • This patch fixed an issue where matches would actually crash if they hit the hour mark. Hi-Rez, helping gamers to get up and do something with their lives!
  • They added the bar at the top showing stats and items. This is the only place this appeared outside the store in old Smite UIs, so before this you couldn't get this information in normal gameplay, as far as I understand.
  • Unless the Wiki is incorrect, gods prices, set in this patch, were 5500 favor or 520 gems. Not sure how long this lasted, it's a really high and weird number and only 100 gems to high.
  • Enemy teams no longer get notified of surrender vote failures. Apparently they were informed that you were surrendering back then?
  • An FX was added for being hit with a CC while immune to it (although at this point full CC immunity wasn't common). In short, people can't blame it enemies hacking anymore. RIP salt.
  • I quote: "Qin's Essence has been renamed to Qin's Blades to sound more "stabby".
  • An item called "heaven's will" met its demise in the very first patch ever. Rest in peace, you will not be remembered.
  • The only notable god balance note, other than some shifting of magical and physical damage (gods did both back then!), is that Odin ring used to do damage! Yep, enemies standing near the edge would be damaged. This would be removed a few patches later, and is such a weird idea looking back.
  • Also, power scaling was instead called power contribution.

Closed Beta Version 0.1.920.0

  • The match joining process we know today where you have to hit accept once ten people are found was added here. I guess you just went to the lobby before? If someone knows what it was like before this, please share! Queuing in general was very different for a long time, anyone else remember the timers on queue pops?
  • In perhaps the most bizarre change I found for this post: "Big Ass Fury has been changed to Gold Fury. Both are very descriptive of the Fury but Gold Fury might be better received". /r/notheonion
  • The gold hue of CC immunity was added this patch, expanding on the changes last time. Can you imagine how confusing it'd be if we didn't have a visual indication like that?
  • The damage on He Bo's water cannon was changed to 100/160/220/280/340. For reference, today it hits for 90/140/190/240/290. Just let that sink in, then stop because he'll probably kill you if stay still to think about it.
  • Hel underwent what are described as significant changes to her kit to be more viable and less shoehorned into a supportive role. Decay, Hinder, Restoration, and Cleanse are all listed as being completely new abilities, and before this patch Repulse slowed and knocked back, but did less damage. This leaves the question... what was she like before? I don't have "patch" notes for the first version of Smite, but it sounds like Hel was more or less reworked. Anyone know anything about this original version of Hel?
  • Hilariously, before this version, Ra ult could be interrupted by CC. I assume he didn't lose the cooldown, but that's just conjecture. Still doesn't make up for that nerf of adding the mute button. While on the subject, I remember hearing once Ra actually walked at this point instead of floating.

Closed Beta Version 0.1.934

  • Stormbringer and Solar Sentinel were both added to the game in this patch. Obsidian Shard and Shaolin Monk-ey were also added in this patch, so the former two were shit even back then. I guess chests were planned from the start.
  • This patch added playing gods you don't own in the practice map. Rest in peace Manticore, you will be missed.
  • Hi-Rez apparently had a sense of humor back then, coming in with the line: "Added ability to disable profanity filter. It's about ******* time!"
  • Artemis' steroid was nerfed; before this patch, she got 75% attack speed at all ranks, and scaled the duration up to seven seconds at max rank. Pew pew pew!
  • Hel received respectable nerfs to nearly every ability in her kit.
  • The damage was removed from Odin ring. I quote: "Removed the damage that was done by the ring when standing too close to the spears. Let's be honest…nobody really knew the rings were doing damage and OP Odin needed a nerf anyways, am I right?!"
  • Sobek received nerfs: the scaling on his tailwhip was changed from 70% to 50%; the base damage on sickening strike was changed from 60/120/180/240/280 to 60/100/140/180/220; and the scaling on lurking in the waters was changed from 100% to 80%. Dude was practically a mage, and these nerfed numbers remain nearly identical today (tail whip is now 40%).

Closed Beta Version 0.1.944.1

  • The legend himself Guan Yu was added in this patch, the first god to be added to the game beyond the starting roster. I won't beat a dead horseman (he didn't have the horse yet), but this kit was honest to god insane, particularly back then.
  • Hades hilariously required line of sight to do damage in his ultimate before this patch. Could you imagine?

Closed Beta Version 0.1.953.0

  • This patch fixed surrender votes occasionally just not working even when successful.
  • Multiples of the same item with aura effects could stack multiple times before this patch. Sounds like a busted exploit, but it probably wouldn't be that viable for everyone to buy Sov.
  • Fatalis was added and had crit. I'm not sure if it actually had the passive at this point, though.
  • Guan Yu got gigantic nerfs, unsurprisingly.

Closed Beta Version 0.1.975.1

  • Bakasura was added and his eat minion healed him for 125/175/225/275/325 (+100% of your physical power). This was nerfed considerably in the next several patches, and was it was probably designed to make modern Hi-Rez playtesters look good.
  • Changed Fire Giant to only spawn at ten minutes. One minute fire giant OP (legit though, what were starting stats?).
  • In what might be the most ironic thing I've come across, given the opinions of any Duel player today, Frostbound Hammer was added with the following passive: "Basic ranged attacks now slow by 15% while melee attacks still slow by 35%". It's such a simple concept even 2012 Hi-Rez could understand it...

Closed Beta Version 0.1.997

  • Anhur gets added, largely similar to his current form, except with a passive that debuffs enemy power by 20% upon hitting a basic. Anyone know when or why this was changed?
  • The god pack was added, but only gave access to the first 30 gods.
  • Recolor skins were added.
  • An item called Silverfox Girdle was nerfed, because before this patch it gave 1000 health, plus Hp5. It was nerfed to 750 health. Apparently this wasn't even super OP, given I've never heard anyone bring it up.
  • I haven't been mentioning it because it was minor stuff, but Agni got a lot of tweaks in the last several patches, which continued here. Given he's considered the focal point of balance today, this was apparently important work which payed off. Modern Hi-Rez could take notes about the slow and steady approach.
  • Ao Kuang's (who had what is today Kukulkan's kit) movement speed buff was buffed to 15/19/23/27/31% from 5/8/11/14/17%. Apparently he got extra movement speed from being near enemies, which still don't put him at a number that makes sense. Rest in peace noodle, you will be missed.
  • This patch nerfed He Bo's damage considerably. The nerfed numbers are more or less what we have today, for perspective. Also of note, He Bo was rooted while using waterspout back then. This patched nerfed the time this lasted for, but didn't remove the feature.
  • VGS was added in this patch. VEA!

Closed Beta Version 0.1.1018.0

  • Cupid was added in this patch and had the very first god reveal video. He's called a "ranged physical assassin", so apparently the classes weren't ironed out yet.
  • Blue baby Vamana was added to the game! Rest in peace, you will be missed.
  • This fixed an issue where tower projectiles would be stopped by walls, allowing a clever and quick player to avoid damage.

Closed Beta Version 0.1.1029

  • Not much interesting happened here. Odin and Agni received some numbers tweaks and some minor general stuff was looked at, but for the most interesting enough to note here was that assassins stopped being called assassins: "On the God Detail pages, Assassins are now called Fighters. It doesn't mean that you can't still assassinate the enemy with your fighting skills, it just means you won't be labelled anymore!".

Closed Beta Version 0.1.1051.1

  • Thor was added! Yep, there was a time he wasn't in the game. Only huge difference in his kit is that Thor wall slowed before popping up on a delay.
  • Added having to kill at least one pheonix to damage the Minotaur (what they had instead of a Titan back then). Not sure how viable it was, but you could totally skip them and go right to fighting it if you really wanted to before this.
  • I quote: "Several improvements to the in-game web browser. Expect additional improvements in future patches". We had an in-game browser?
  • Guan Yu is still being consistently nerfed, by the way.

Closed Beta Version 0.1.1069.0

  • Some minor things we take for granted like renting and first blood were added. Assists were tweaked.
  • Joust was added! Rest in peace old Joust map, you will be missed.
  • The precursor to Hun Batz's recolor, Red Demon (then a Sun Wukong skin; this is another Ao Kuang/Kukulkan situation) was added as a facebook reward like the Artemis skin today is.
  • Item fog of war was added. Before this, you could see enemy items from the get-go. Anyway happen to know how much people had figured out counterbuilding at this point?
  • Purification Beads was changed to give knockback immunity as well. Like I said, true CC immunity wasn't really a thing yet.
  • Hel's inspire lost its movement speed buff. Not sure when it got added back in, but I guess this means she was still OP at this point.
  • He Bo's ultimate was changed to no longer go through player walls. Remember those crazy He Bo numbers from earlier? Yeah, he could take that 700+ base with 130% scaling and pull a Ganesha with it.

Closed Beta Version 0.1.1080

  • The Minotaur (again, titan) received huge buffs. You could actually slow him before this patch!
  • CDR cap was raised to 30%; before this it, you could only have 25%. There was also a CDR buff at this point in Smite history that gave 20% CDR, which was all but 5% of that original cap.
  • Gem of Iso got big nerfs. Before this, it slowed for 35% and could proc on non-damaging abilities.
  • Heartseeker had a change, and I noticed its art is basically the Jotuun's Wrath art. The dagger we know today wouldn't come until later.

Closed Beta Version 0.1.1092

  • Ares was added this patch, and bolster defense effected the Minotaur. Nothing else of note.

Closed Beta Version 0.1.1113.1

  • Freya was added this patch, and she's actually fairly different from how she is now. See, remember how some gods did both types of damage back then? Well, her passive converted 20% of her magical power to physical power, and both Irradiate and Pulse added magical damage to her physical basics (she did both at once while they were active). On top of this, she was punished a lot more for using both of these steroids at the same time. It was a really cool idea for a kit, but of course had to go when physical and magical were split.
  • Apparently before this patch god abilities could detect wards or something? Not entirely sure what they mean by this.
  • The decline button was removed from the accept screen going into matches. Yay for one option menus!
  • The Minotaur was changed to go through player walls. Just think long and hard about how stupid that must've been before.
  • Although Artemis traps would continue to function as wards for a long while, they stopped being sentries this patch.
  • Cupid lost the slow on his heart bomb. Not sure when they added this back in.

Closed Beta Version 0.1.1148

  • Before we get to my last note, Sobek pluck went through minions before this patch.
  • Okay guys, I found the winner. We're not beating this: Loki and Arena were added in the same patch. /thread

Closed Beta Version 0.1.1148.2

  • I lied, it gets far worse. This small hotfix only had four changes. They fixed some crash-causing issues, altered match-making a tiny bit, and fixed two bugs. Turns out Decoy and Aimed Strike were doing true damage on release.

...

I have nothing to add to that. It speaks for itself. Hope you guys learned as much as I did!

It is a strong effect, and if I buy it later in the build, I'm not getting much worth out of it for the price.

I feel like Phoenixes should do magical damage.

Posted: 04 Jul 2017 11:06 PM PDT

Right now Physical defense is valued really highly for tanking towers, GF, Phoenixes, Titan, Portal Demon, some of FG etc. It doesn't really make that much sense that EVERY structure and most objectives do all Physical damage.

Plus thematically it makes sense since Phoenixes are kinda magical and shoot fireballs.

Skin Concept: Vladnir (Fafnir concept)

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 12:31 PM PDT

https://imgur.com/a/ALtAc

After playing the new Darkest Dungeon DLC I was inspired to draw this for my favorite guard. Disclaimer: I haven't drawn in 2 years, my tablet stopped working, so I'm pretty rusty with pencil. I plan on freshening up the picture soon.

Crimson fire/explosion

Coerce is a blood drop with fangs

When Transforming: "I...SMELL...BLOOD!"

Direct Taunt to Camazotz: "Join me, brother, or die a thousand deaths!"

Direct taunt of Isis: "I will drink the blood of life itself!"

Direct taunt to Loki: "The horse is next!"

The breastplate is inspired by the armour worn by Dracula in the 1992 "Bran Stroker's Dracula".

EDIT: changes to suit reddit's retarded spacing format.

I feel like Clash should be 4v4 and Siege should be 5v5.

It seems odd that the bigger map, that has an actual jungle and non-tower objectives, has less players than the smaller map with no jungle or game-changing objective.

VD2 - Blaming match making is the new Elo Hell

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 07:30 AM PDT

Hello Smite Fans,

So normally here I make some intentionally cheesey sales pitch for the podcast and warn you that we swear. This week I want to bring up a point I made during the Episode as a basically a post on its own. I'm going to write it out (spoilers ahead) for anyone curious but doesn't want to listen. (and maybe decides to because of it.

Every time match making is discussed publicly by Hi Rez they acknowledge that match making struggles with the super high end like the pros. Their MMR is so high the system has a very difficult time matching them accurately. However every time Hi Rez talks about match making they almost shrug off the average players complaints as working as intended. Which I believe is mathematically most likely true. But whats happened is that that because matchmaking is acknowledged as bad for pro players, alot of pro players are VERY vocal about the bad match making.

Now with a bunch of high profile community figures saying match making is bad they have given the fuel to the players that over value themselves to say without scrutiny that they are in Elo Hell.Lets compare Elo Hell to trash match making for a second

I can't win because the players at this level are un carryable. im in Elo Hell and not where I belong

I can't win because match making keep giving me bad team mates that i can't carry. Match making is trash, proof every pro players twitter ever.

The biggest difference is that the first example everyone collectively agree's Elo Hell is a myth and calls the player a noob. in the second example everyone joins in the circle jerk with stories of the bad players they get on their teams. Except the pros never say they can't climb in this match making, they just are not getting the consistent high caliber matches they want.

I acknowledge some low population ques like siege have shit matchmaking, but that's entirely a population problem not match makings fault. And you can still argue that its trash if you want. But in the more populated ques and ranked play, quit making that your excuse for your low rank and poor games with feeders. Stop using complaints about match making as a get out of jail free card for Elo Hell shit posts.

But I would love to hear some discussion on my thoughts.

We (I....ranted) talked alot more about match making in the episode, including mistakes I think Hi Rez has made. Check it out on Sound Cloud, Itunes, and Youtube

Skin Idea- Chaac, the Singing Woodsman

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 07:39 PM PDT

So, I have no art skills, but basically Chaac as the typical Axe wielding woodsman, who also happens to sing all of his lines in a gruff, lumberjack style voice. Typical red flannel shirt, beanie and suspenders. I think it would be awesome :)

Ranked is a waste of time

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 12:30 AM PDT

As the title says. Ranked is a waste of time. Over the last 50 games I've played, maybe 5 were quality games. The VAST MAJORITY were lost not due to any skill either way, but rather troll picks, players who intentionally lost games, and dc's. 45 out of 50 games is not an exaggeration, I kept track of every game. By the way, I was plat 5/ Gold 1 throughout these 50 games. Here are the stats I kept track of:

Over 50 games, there where:

15 dcs

16 troll picks

13 intentional feeders (who said in chat their intentions to feed)

27 people who intentionally threw the games in ways other than feeding (i.e. never rotating, split-pushing the entire game, walling off own teammates, etc)

Ranked is a complete waste of time right now. It's not fun, competitive, or skill based in the slightest. It's literally which team can get fewer idiots. The game is decided before it is even played depending on which team gets more toxic players. My casual games are consistently higher quality. Feel free to share your stories here.

Suggestions? Well, I would suggest making it 5man qeue or atleast 3man. If we're gonna endure this shit, might as well with our friends.

Can Malice get its priced reduced?

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 01:14 PM PDT

The item is barely seeing any play and its the 2nd most expensive crit item in the game. And if you dont want to get rage, you usually get wind demon because its 150 gold cheaper than malice and gives a variety of stats. The only gods who would even consider building malice now are Mercury and at certain times, Serqet. If the cost was reduced from 3000 to maybe around 2800 or 2700 this item would see a lot more play.

Enigma and Odyssey chest

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 02:09 PM PDT

Latest patches hi-rez has not been updating these 2 chests properly. For example a few tier 2 skins and voice packs are not included in enigma chest, while odyssey gets added a few items every few months.

Most annoying thing is there's no way to know if they added something or not so you must sacrifice 1 chest to know if you get content or a booster.

Thoughts?

Edit: For example cu chulainn voice pack was not included in enigma but they added it to The Flock chest so you have to spend 200 extra gems while having enigma chest. This is a dirty move.

What are some buffs to Swift Wing, Rangda's, and War Flag that can make them viable?

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 01:39 PM PDT

The disconnecting has gotten out of hand and it's ruining the fun.

Posted: 05 Jul 2017 05:12 PM PDT

Every 2 or 3 out of 5 games there is a D.C. Is it the server problem? Is there a real life emergency? Or are these stupid players really that immature or weak minded. Idc if you are 0-3 or 6-3 or whatever fucking play. Finish the game for Petes sake.

It's so sad to know that you never know if you can even finish a ranked game because of all these leavers. It's such a joke. I just give up and wasted my time when "an ally has left the game" appears on screen. 5v4 are the worst experiences in any moba period.

There need to be way harder consequences or punishments for afk. Cry me a river that you got banned. Well next time think if you have time to play or are in a good mental state.
