Hearthstone - Theorycrafting Thursdays Weekly Discussion

Theorycrafting Thursdays Weekly Discussion

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 05:10 PM PDT

Hello members of the /r/hearthstone community,

This is a weekly thread designed for more advanced discussion regarding the intricacies of Hearthstone. Questions and answers should be focused on high-level theory crafting, such as card synergy, efficient mana drafts, and the viability of cards in certain situations.

Please keep it clean and try to add more than just a one or two word response. As the goal of this post is to increase the community's knowledge, the thought process matters as much as the answer! There is also a Newbie Tuesday weekly post, for those who wish to discuss the basics.

Note: I am a bot. Questions or feedback regarding this thread? Message the moderators.

Who wants Blizzard to turn "Can't be targeted by spells or Hero Powers" into "Elusive?"

If Blizzard insists on making cards with this text, it's time to convert it into a keyword like "Poisonous."

I wish character dialogue boxes like Ahune were skippable

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 06:21 AM PDT

I hate that these dialogue boxes appear for a set amount of time and you can't get rid of them or perform any other action.

It was particularly annoying in the Karazhan adventure when Moroes and the bosses would have their little conversations. It's neat the first time, but pretty irritating when you have to listen to it again and again. Karazhan remains the only adventure where I didn't bother with the heroics because I hated having to restart the fight and listen to the role-play again.

Now we have characters like Ragnaros and Ahune talking to us when we open the game. Why, when Ahune tells me I have a free Arena game, do I just need to sit there for several seconds and wait for him to go away before I can do anything?

I do appreciate the extra flavor they add to the game, but going forward I'd really appreciate a little x box or a [skip] or something whenever characters like this speak, especially when it's a sequence we've already heard.

When you browse /r/hearthstone in the weeks leading up to an expansion, as new cards are released

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 06:04 AM PDT

Anyone else really happy and excited about the fact that all legendaries so far were encountered in WoW?

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 01:17 AM PDT

I have been expecting for this to happen since the expansion has been announced. Now I am just waiting for the Lich King to be one of them. Also paladin Arthas, Muradin, Saurfang etc.

How Good Is Spikeridged Steed? Now With Data™.

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 09:59 PM PDT

Following recent discussion, I decided to evaluate how strong is Spikeridged Steed in The Arena, based on publicly available data.

For every card and class, I found the percent of games that are won by certain cards out of all games. The exact calculation of card Power (P) is based on a Success (S) rate of decks that drafted card and how many Decks (D) drafted it and follows P=2xDx(S-50%).

To really screw with balance, the card must be:

  1. Еasy to draft for its power i.e. Deathwing is very strong but rarely seen in Arena.
  2. Allow you to win more games than you should. In a perfectly balanced world, the success rate of every deck is 50%. If there is a card that allows you to win much more than it unbalances things.
  3. Cards must not be dead in your hand, this is why cards are rated by their success of being drafted into the deck, instead of being played in game i.e. Pyroblast is played as a finisher and certainly strong one for that, but high cost is a clear drawback.

Here you can see the hundred most powerful arena cards and percent of games that they can win for certain classes. Some interesting details.

  1. Everything from Meteor and higher, basically allows you win one game for free.
  2. Statistically, every seventh Paladin game is won by Spikeridged Steed alone.
  3. Strong classes make their cards stronger and vice versa. Paladin is worst offender here.
  4. Druid is too weak to be listed. His strongest card is Tortollan Forager with next one being Swipe.
  5. Warrior is also in bad shape. His strongest card is Fool's Bane with next one being Free Win Axe.
  6. Warlock is barely there. Siphon Soul is on the list, his second one is Blastcrystal Potion.
  7. Vinecleaver, despite being somewhat ignored, is just slightly weaker than Spikeridged Steed.
  8. Firelands Portal is still the most problematic Mage Card, even after reduction to its offering rate.
  9. Data confirms Vilespin Slayer and Envenom Weapon as cards that carry Rogue the most.
  10. Strongest Neutral Card turns out ot be Vicious Fledgeling Stonehill Defender in Paladin.

TL;DR Drafting Spikeridged Steed as Paladin is literally more powerful than starting from 2-0.

Request for an Update ... Pity Timer Reset Bug!

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 07:23 AM PDT

So for those of you who are unaware of the bug that popped out about over a week ago, pity timers for legendaries and epics across all pack types were reset.

Now I assume the majority of players did not and are not opening packs, as they are waiting for the new expansion and for the new no-duplicate rule (or legendaries) to take effect. However, there are a few that did, myself included, albeit a small number of packs about 6-7 in total.

Can we get a progress update on how this is being dealt with?

Card complexity going up?

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 08:01 AM PDT

First post ever here.

Feels like with the new expansion the card complexity / skills required to play with or against cards will slightly go up. Cards like Fatespinner, Bring it on!, Mountainfire Armor or even Nerubian Unraveler all seem to require to think strategically about usage, timing, and counter plays. As I've been playing this game for 2+ years now, I'm super excited about this. Anyone else?

PS: please unleash the 'new player experience' memes ...

What if Bearshark and Sharkbear are actually two different cards and Blizzard released Bearshark first just to mess with us?

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 09:33 PM PDT

They could even have similar art, and their flavor texts could be about getting confused with each other.

[Samsung Galaxy Promo] Get up to 4 free packs and a card back + save money with Amzn Coins

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 03:03 AM PDT

This has been posted here before but the thread is in the archive and isn't visible to newer reddit readers.

The most crucial part is: This is still working

We all need some free packs and even more so with the upcoming changes in opening packs. This is how you can get at least 3 free packs and even a 4th if you never played on an android device before.

All you need is a PC and an emulation software:

  1. Go to http://en.bignox.com/ to download and install the Nox App Player v 5.0
  2. Open Nox and go to System Settings (top right corner) > Properties
  3. Change your phone model by entering a specific one
There are three empty boxes which you need to fill in from left to right with: "Samsung" (your manufacturer) and change both Brand and Model to "SM-G920F" (the other two boxes)
  4. Click save changes, exit out of Nox and restart it
  5. Login to the Google Play Store on Nox home screen
  6. (If you want to save money with Amazon coins, download the Amazon Underground App first)
  7. Download and install HearthStone (for using Amazon coins through the Amazon Underground App)
  8. Open HearthStone to get your 3 free classic packs and a card back

Bonus: If you've never played a game on an android device before, play a quick game for a 4th pack.

Please note: Amazon coins are not available in all regions, please check in the App first if Amazon coins are available to you.

Amazon Coins:
Because you now can emulate an android device you can even save yourself some money with amazon coins.

If you downloaded the Amazon Underground app you're ready to go. If you skipped this part beforehand, you now have to delete Hearthstone again and you need do download Hearthstone again through the Amazon Underground App. I did not understand it instantly, but just use the search inside this specific Amazon app and download Hearthstone

If you start Hearthstone now and want to buy packs, you can pay with coins instead of money.

Within the Amazon Underground app itself, you can buy those Amazon coins which can save you up to 25% or even more. It depends on how much coins you buy.

For a even better explanation please have a look at this instructions:

Prediction: Deadmines / Defias Brotherhood will be the next Expansion after Knights of the Frozen Throne. (Expansion III, Quarter 4)

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 08:25 AM PDT

Now this is just speculation for I only have the Year of the Mammoth image to go on, but it's worth a shot. Ref: https://bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net/cms/gallery/1o/1OW9BS1ST7G31487235316241.jpg

Now from the Image, we only see a bag of gold. While little to go on, looks very similar to what a character like Robin Hood would steal or a Bank Thief would run away with. The Defias Brotherhood are Rogues, Thieves, Outlaws, Highwaymen, ect. It makes perfect sense for them to hold these bags of cash. Now this would apply to anyone with an old wallet, but then notice the tear on the bag.

Now why it is thorn? This could be from a struggle as not all give their gold up willing. Or it could be for my next point. Now there is more ways to interpret it while still making sense.

The bag full of gold looks similar to what a master would give to the outlaw that commits a crime. (They throw it to them before or after the deed is done.) Some of them even open the gold to see if the payment is real or vice-versa.(Think Puss-In-Boots from Shrek, Ogre killer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVOkNeea6I0 Or the the The Coachman from Disney's Pinnochio, In exchange for what they thought was a request for murder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDNzN2fv5bQ)

Now in World of Warcraft, the Defias Brotherhood only work for coins(currency of wow). However, before they became the Defias Brotherhood, they were known as the Stonemasons Guild. They were responsible for many works, such as the reconstruction of Stormwind. However, when all was done, the Nobles of Stormwind refuse to pay them. Again, the theme of payment is present here.

When the Stonemasons didn't get their pay, they swore revenge on Stormwind and fled to Westfall, where they made the Deadmines as their capital and abused the weary travellers and the local farmers.

Once again, this is all speculation but I'd love to know what you think. Am I correct, or is this something else?

Thijs' Card Reveal Delayed Until Tomorrow

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 01:27 AM PDT

Apparently he needed to wait on another person who needed to reveal their card first but didn't do it as scheduled.

Seems to be some implication that these two cards are related in some way.

Wildly speculate away!

Playing for the first time. Second package I get a Legendary!

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 04:02 AM PDT

My friend just convinced me after a long time to start Hearthstone. I always loved strategy games and theorycraft a lot in other games.

Without thinking much I gave it finally a shot. And I like it tbh

Opening my second pack I get this fancy beautiful animation. I told him I got Antonidas. After a brief of silence he asked "WHAT".

I heard that RNGesus is the only God that we should pray for. I guess he got a new follower.

You got a new player ready to learn this game. In frustrated and happy moments I will fight.

Let RNGesus be with you.
