Making it the largest prizepool ever for an esports tournament, beating TI6 and TI5 in second and third respectively.

Kinda important for dota I guess ?

Can you guys go fight for net neutrality. I'm not even from the USA. But if we don't have net neutrality NA dota might die. Then where would we go for memes.

edit:

my attempt at an ELI5 of net neutrality

  • If you have net neutrality you get cheaper internet and free access to everything.

  • If you don't then you have to pay for every single website and every single thing you do on the internet .The ISP decides what they choose to give in your basic package and what they will charge for each add-on .

deleted this one.

edit 4 :

TL;DR save memes , vote for net neutrality

Lack of growth: Dota 2 had 555 thousand avg players in june this year, less than the amount in june 2015. Let's discuss why.

Posted: 12 Jul 2017 07:19 AM PDT

TL;DR: the game is not dying, but it is not growing at all. Valve is doing great with the esports, could be doing better at welcoming new players and keeping them, and really should at least think about advertising in any form.

First of everything, the data from the title is from Steamcharts. The average player numbers and the peaks are supposed to go up as TI begins, and to stay pumped up for some time after it ends. But let's not focus too much on numbers. The game is NOT dying, but it is also not growing at all.

Section 1 - Esports

Dota 2 is an astounding title in the esport community, and we can look forward to have an even better year in 2018, with the changes from Valve in the Major system. The International is the best event out there for a spectator, its value production is way beyond anything in any other game, and seen how it bumps up the numbers as it begins, the esports section is assured to be at its finest.

The only thing that could be improved is in terms of advertisement. We all can agree that if TI were in the hands of Riot or Blizzard, it would be heavily advertised as the biggest esports event of the world, but we will talk about that in the third section of this post.

Section 2 - Welcoming newcomers

Not much time ago, some new tutorials were added to make the life of newer players easier. These tutorials, however, are not even close to enough. Even with the guide page being updated, the learning curve of Dota is too plain before it starts getting steep: the basics are really hard to get used to, although these guides really help people who don't know what a hero does or how it is supposed to be played, and this new buildguides page must be kept working.

Now, compared to most ARTS out there, the tutorial for Dota is the less useful one, and this has nothing to do with how high the skill ceiling is, so talking about how much more complex Dota is will not help much.

One topic that isn't really addressed in the current tutorials is invisibility. It is really impressive how loose a Riki can play in a newcomer's game. Plus, it could be really interesting to make a tutorial specific for pub-stomping heroes such as Pudge or Sniper and how to play against them, not forgetting to mention, even if quickly, the peak of efficiency of each of these heroes, and why. This would make the players start thinking on how to counter other heroes as well, and start grasping the strategy involved in the game.

Section 3 - Advertisement

A quick look at the League of Legends' Workshop or champion teasers really makes me jealous, and don't let me begin talking about Overwatch. But these trailers are important not to make fans like me happy, but to attract new players or to convince newcomers that trying a bit longer to adapt might be worth it.

These trailers are so powerful that can make the hype of a game like Overwatch skyrocket so much it got to a point it made its competitive scene fall into a crisis. However, they are expensive, we all know that. So they shouldn't be frequent, one for every new hero we get will be plenty, considering that we will probably get 1 per year, revealed at The International. Plus, this will put TI under even more spotlights for casuals or might-be players.

Talking about TI, it is probably the biggest esport event in the world, so why not brag about it? Why is it that game websites talk more about LoL World Championship than about the International? Esport is the best way to show how epic a game can be, and how unlimited its possibilities are... but who are we showing this to? Mostly already-players I believe. It does have the strength to attract people from other games, but this strength is not being used. It should be easy to do if made together with the trailers mentioned above, just like the New Journey update at the end of the Monkey King teaser.

Conclusion

What else should be added or modified to keep our beloved game growing? As said in the title, this is a discussion and not an article, and it it's being hosted in Reddit after all, we don't work at Valve nor do we know about the developers plans for the future, but as someone who's spent thousand of hours into this game and who don't want to see it die, I think it is already time this discussion had started.

The International 7 Pubstomp Thread

Posted: 12 Jul 2017 04:04 AM PDT

Unfortunately mods don't think this thread is worthy of being stickied or put in the sidebar so I'm forced to copy-past it to keep it afloat. If you think it would be useful, message them!.

To the mods saying that they will wait until Valve puts up the official website: THE ORGANIZERS NEED FAR MORE TIME THAT WHAT VALVE GIVES TO RENT THE PLACES AND ORGANIZE EVERYTHING. Ask any organizer and they will say the same thing.

It's that time of the year again! as most of you know, Valve offers very little support and publicity to most of the pubstomp events. So, like last year, I'm posting this thread to collect in one place all the pubstomps and viewing party organized by the members of the /r/DotA2 community. Every organizer can add their event by simply commenting with the location, a brief description and a link to the event.

A Midas study: how you should use it.

Posted: 12 Jul 2017 02:03 AM PDT

Watching a lot of pro streams, I've noticed and interesting trend among some of the players: they tend to hold on to Midas in order to use it on a Large Neutral Creep (notably /u/EternalEnVy). This lead me to question: is it really worth it? And how much can you withhold your Golden Hand in order to be most efficient?

Here is my investigation:

UPDATE: as u/Bokoloony and /u/robobok pointed out, there is a 2% Jungle Creeps xp/gold increase every 7.30 mins. (From base value). I also made a mistake in the original calculations, not counting the 1st use.

If we take this into account, and start counting from the first increase (7:30 mins into the game) the numbers are following:

  • Ranged Lane Creep: 166.5 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp after 7:30: 179.265 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp after 15:00: 182.78 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp after 22:30: 186.295 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp after 30:00: 189.81 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp after 37:30: 193.325 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp after 45:30: 196.84 experience
20 min timeline [Starting from 7:30]
  • Ranged Creep, MaxE - total of 13 uses, 2164.5 experience.
  • Head of the Large Camp, MaxE - total of 13 uses [5 uses after 7:30, 4 uses after 15:00, 4 uses after 22,30] = 2372.625 experience.
  • Head of the Large Camp, 5 sec interval - total of 12 uses [5 uses after 7:30, 4 uses after 15:00, 3 uses after 22,30] = 2186.09 experience.
  • Head of the Large Camp, 10 sec interval - total of 11 uses [5 uses after 7:30, 4 uses after 15:00, 2 uses after 22,30] = 2000.035 experience.

As you can see, this way things gone a lot different.

Also, a PSA: A lot of people in this thread seem to misinterpret the information I've provided - This post is not a call to always use your Midas on the ranged creep. Dota is an incredibly complex game with millions of scenarios that can have a drastic impact on the flow of the game. A big number of people have written about farming patterns, time it takes to kill different units and other things that have an impact on your efficiency, however, the purpose of this post is only one - to make you think next time you use your Midas "would it be beneficial to use it right now on this ranged creep or to spend 10 seconds running back to the large camp?"

  • Ranged Lane Creep: 90 experience
  • Hellbear Smasher: 95 experience
  • Dark Troll Summoner: 95 experience
  • Wildwing Ripper: 95 experience
  • Centaur Conqueror: 95 experience
  • Satyr Tormenter: 95 experience

Using Midas multiplies the experience by 1.85x, as a result we get the following numbers:

  • Ranged Lane Creep: 166.5 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp: 175.75 experience

A mere 9.25 difference. But how will it play out in the long run?

Here are some quick scenarios:

20 min timeline
  • Ranged Creep, MaxE* - total of 13 uses, 2164 experience.
  • Head of the Large Camp, MaxE - total of 13 uses, 2284.75 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp, 5 sec interval - total of 12 uses, 2109 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp, 10 sec interval - total of 11 uses, 1933.25 experience
30 min timeline
  • Ranged Creep, MaxE - total of 19 uses, 3163.5 experience.
  • Head of the Large Camp, MaxE - total of 19 uses, 3339.25 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp, 5 sec interval - total of 18 uses, 3159 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp, 10 sec interval - total of 17 uses, 2987.75 experience
40 min timeline
  • Ranged Creep, MaxE - total of 25 uses, 4162.5 experience.
  • Head of the Large Camp, MaxE - total of 25 uses, 4393.75 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp, 5 sec interval - total of 23 uses, 4042.25 experience
  • Head of the Large Camp, 10 sec interval - total of 22 uses, 3866.5 experience

*MaxE - Maximum Efficiency - using Midas as soon as it's off cooldown.

TL;DR It's more efficient to use Hand of Midas on Ranged Lane Creep immediately than to take ~7 seconds to find the Head of the Large Camp (Experience-wise). Quick tip: Gold-wise it's always superior to use it on a lower-cost creep.

EDIT: Made a mistake not counting the 1st use of Midas.

I hope we will have more of The International Archives at TI7

Posted: 12 Jul 2017 08:49 AM PDT

I found these videos so fascinating when they were put out at TI6. They were incredibly well put together films that looked at the past of TI and some of the greatest moments. I think most of us can agree there are still so many more amazing moments from TI History that could be covered. The way the Fountain Hook was illustrated in it's archive video with it's own SFM Animation was awesome and I'd love to see more of TI's best moments envisioned like it this year. Having the retrospectives from the professional players was also really good and if it happens again I'd love to see some more players and/or casters talk about some of these memorable moments in our history.

For those who may have missed them or want to watch them again, here's all 'The International Archives' from last year's TI.

Sandking is the fastest hero in Dota 2

Posted: 11 Jul 2017 10:25 PM PDT

He can dig a tunnel measuring 1300 units and reach at the end of it in just 0.433 seconds. Assuming the 1 unit range in Dota 2 is equal to 1 inch in real world, that's 1300 inch(with aghs) or 108.33 ft., that's 250.18 ft. per second or 170.58 mph, faster than a human sneeze, cheetah and even Usain Bolt. Not even gold diggers can do like that.

Dear Valve, your player cards feels like work, not like fun :( plz improve the experience (suggestions inside, more ideas Welcome)

Posted: 12 Jul 2017 12:39 AM PDT

I had really been looking forward to the player cards, I love these fantasy games and normaly put a lot of energi into them. I also love the idea that you get in game effects based on the cards you have available, this is a cool idea. But its so frustrating that I have no control over what team I am lucky enough to get all in gold. My BP is level 860 and I have 2 teams all in gold, U should implement some sort of crafting system, where u can craft specific cards. I dont see how u dont have this? the stats on the cards are still random so its not like it would break the system....

Maybe something like, trade 3 other gold cards to get 1 specific gold card. or 5 silver card to get a gold... just something that makes this feel less like a lotteri and more like a game.

Also your hole card mangement part is horrible, I have to pace myself in going true all my cards bit by bit and dusting the ekstra cards I have... its so much work its so slow... u need to implement some kind of tool that helps with this.

Long story short, the player cards are not fun atm, its just work and I hope u do something to improve it

I'm currently sitting at Battle Pass level 1226 and I've opened hundreds of packs. I pretty much disenchanted most of my player cards(except for my favourite team ofc) and still couldn't get the overhead TP logo for my favourite team. I could spend more money but it's not guaranteed which is just frustrating.
