| Low Priority should be solo experience. Posted: 04 Jul 2017 04:38 AM PDT Low Priority is intended as a form of punishment for abusive behavior hence it's not supposed to be fun experience. It is supposed to bring together all kinds of people who will generally hate eachoter from the start and teach them to adapt and play together in the name of the ultimate goal of escaping this pisshole. It should make people experience what it is like to play safe lane antimage against aggressive trilane while your supports run aggressive trilane on your offlane and then rotate to steal your farm as long as you go to jungle, or move away when you switch lane then flame you for being shit carry and ping spam you and even in game like that somehow you manage to stay calm and win. However unfortunately for some absurd reason it's possible for people to 5 stack in low priority making it a fun experience with 5 friends who have easy time owning a 3 stack and 2 random people who hate eachother's guts and spend more time blaming and abusing eachoter than playing the game. In my opinion the ability to play with friends completely invalidates low prio as a form of punishment for stackers. It's only minor inconvenience that they can't play ranked and are forced to SD. tl;dr Read the full text. submitted by /u/_mm256_maddubs_epi16 [link] [comments] |

| Japan Major/Minor? Posted: 04 Jul 2017 01:12 AM PDT With the new tournament system being introduced by Valve, I believe this is a chance for Japan to finally get some attention. We already have servers here, so gaining enough traction to gather some sponsors may finally be feasible. Anyone else interested in traveling to Tokyo for a dota event? I currently live here, and run my own localization business. I would be willing to put the hours in to make this happen. To get things started, I made a twitter. If you are interested, follow me to help convince sponsors it's worth it! https://twitter.com/Dota2Japan submitted by /u/theprofessor04 [link] [comments] |

When having normal river effect, teamfights around the river is so suffering... usually lower than other places by 20 FPS. | New TI invite system mockup based on '16/'17 season tournaments Posted: 04 Jul 2017 12:46 AM PDT I mocked up what the TI invites would look like if the new system had been in place for TI7. I chose 10 tournaments that fit the major/minor criteria and assigned each a multiplier based on what Valve hinted in the blog post. - MDL - 1
- Boston - 5
- WCA - 2
- ESL - 2
- WESG - 2
- Starladder - 2
- DAC - 3
- Kiev - 10
- Manilla - 3
- Epicenter - 4
I also gave places 1-8 a points value - 1st - 10
- 2nd - 7
- 3rd - 5
- 4th - 3
- 5th/6th - 2
- 7th/8th - 1
Taking The placings from each tournament you get a top 16 as follows. Not so Pretty Graph - OG 192
- EG 129
- VP 98
- IG 94
- Liquid 80
- Newbee 59
- DC 37
- AF 35
- IGV 32
- Faceless 32
- Secret 30
- TNC 30
- NP 24
- LGDFY 19
- VG 16
So if you were to take the top 6 as direct invites you would have the same 6 as were invited under whatever Valves current system is. submitted by /u/zaxerone [link] [comments] |

| Do you think Battle Passes should only be exclusive to The International from now on? Posted: 03 Jul 2017 06:36 PM PDT From what I read in both reddit and in my discussion with friends, a lot of players are burned out by the constant Battle Passes. Due to its frequency, it has lost its meaning and exclusivity. Players just skip the past Major BPs because they don't offer anything special (like Immortals, alt game mode, international ranked, terrain, etc.) other than more skin sets. And outside the Compendium itself, players don't have anything to do or get anything once they reach level 60. So is it a good idea for Valve to simply make Battle Passes exclusive only to The International? It prevents players from burning out due to being exposed to the same old wagers, quest paths, compendiums without any gap in between and it makes people crave for it when TI is on the horizon. If Valve wants Majors from 3rd party tournaments to be crowd-funded, the DAC 2017 chests sounds like a good way to do so. People can fund as much as they want without limitations and the workshop artists get their fair share since the chests are not rewards inside a Battle Pass. submitted by /u/Mirroga [link] [comments] |

| Valve: If you're going to increase support to third-party tournaments, please bring Twitch prod features to the client/DotaTV. Posted: 04 Jul 2017 08:51 AM PDT Valve needs to bring in stream-exclusive features to DotaTV/the spectating function for the following reasons: - The equipment to make the improvements possible outside of client is expensive as fuck1 . Incorporating these features would make quality production more affordable for organizers (who might host Majors/Minors in the future) see note 6
- As shown by the May-June tournament spree, improvements have not been consistent from tournament to tournament2, which is confusing for new players. Some "improvements" have also been horrible altogether and need to be rethought3
- DotaTV has been neglected with bugs like illusion lag being a problem since the Boston Major.
- Some spectators can't stream HD but have a smoother experience watching in-client.
- People have their preferences (skins that allow for better glance value4, maps they are familiar with5) that can be catered to using DotaTV
- Spectators should not be forced to choose between getting prizes and having an enjoyable viewing experience.
There are some problems with bringing back DotaTV as a viable means for spectating but it's fixable: - We might splinter the viewership numbers between Twitch and DotaTV - Viewership is splintered already (Russians watch via Hitbox, Chinese watch on PandaTV/whatever Chinese Twitch is, Filipinos watch via the bootleg Facebook streams). This already hurts when a sponsor's marketing team looks at sponsorship proposals but Valve can easily collate the numbers and release them to help organizers secure sponsors.
- It's hard to show ads in-client and practically impossible to add sponsor labeling (bugs, etc.) - With the new Majors system, sponsors (especially pushy sponsors who want maximum eyeballs) will be an inevitability if we want to afford quality venues/player treatment6. If Valve allows its partners to put this in, they can control where these things can be placed.
- Lanecam/Roshcam is impossible - In-engine split-screen has been a technology for sometime, usually for multiplayer. It might take some jerry-rigging but if Halo:CE can do it on a
potato console in the early 2000s, we might (with modifications to the client of course) - Potato computers might not handle it - Valve's auto graphics settings have been pretty reliable. They can add a check to computer hardware and enable features depending on hardware capability.
- It will be difficult to control - For group observers: Valve should support having multiple observer roles (technical director controls what cameras will be shown to DotaTV spectators, observers can control lane/rosh/rune/courier cameras, free camera to observe fights, statsmen can create ingame popups to show stats) and a more robust stat-tracking system for players. For solo obs: in-game camera can detect fights and hop over there, shouldn't be a problem adapting to multicam.
- The infrastructure might not be there for streaming video in DotaTV - Valve has already embedded Twitch streams in-client for Majors/TI. Maybe Valve can partner with Twitch so the client will automatically load the stream once the game is over/load the game once it starts.
- Twitch has been a valuable partner and we'll be effectively abandoning them - Twitch will remain a valuable partner. They're still the only way to watch Dota on the go without opening a laptop. We partnered with them for 1080p60 last TI and maybe we can partner with them for deeper integration in-game.
- Other platforms like YT Gaming will be ignored if we integrate a video stream - Valve can offer options in-game to switch between video sources for a tourney.
- You're robbing Pimpmuckl/Bukka/Noxville/Nahaz (ish)/Skrff/Weppas of their jobs! - Not really. First, this is about giving the technical people the proper tools to do their job in a way that will be appreciated by everyone, not just the people watching on Twitch. Second, Pimp mentioned that he was going to create what would become Layerth if Valve doesn't release a spectator update so Layerth arose more of necessity (the entrepreneurship seems to have come later but IDK) 7. Third, this allows us to develop future statsmen/observers by giving them access to the same tools as the pros. These future obs/statsmen can practice their skills without paying huge money for equipment or TTours-ing a major tournament. Finally, having the tools does not mean having the skills. Skreppas/PimpBukka/Noxville/Nahaz have improved thanks to the various tournaments they worked on and the experience will always be invaluable compared to a greenhorn with the same tools.
I think these are some features that need to be integrated: - Practically everything in Layerth ^(see note 7)
- Roshan/Lane/Courier/Observer/Jungle stack cameras
- Multiple obs, multiple cameras, technical directors
- The ability to create draft overlays (Not sure how to go about with this)
- Statsman popups
- Sponsor logo bugs
- Player vs player stat comparisons
- Video of the panel (might be easier to embed the stream and make it play when the game ends. IDK, this is probably the hardest bit)
NOTES: - 1- I'm not a broadcast/video engineer by any means but I did some
research googling. According to this article, PGL used Blackmagic ATEMs and Smart Videohubs (still pretty cheap compared to the Ross equipment ESL usually uses) which cost $3795/$2845 a pop from B&H. The DAC 2017 BTS video shows they use a Grass Valley replay controller ($11K according to this site), a Yamaha mixing board ($3999 used from Amazon). The DAC video/Kiev Major finals video show they use a Sony camera (guessing the PXW-Z150 which can handle 4K) which can cost $3299 each (and they run several). PGL also appear to run a team that builds their broadcast graphics in Unity, so programming and maintaining that is also another cost to consider. There's also a Fora HVS-2000 ($42K) in the DAC BTS video which is a helluva step up from the ATEMs but their CSGO BTS show the ATEM switchers so IDK what they actually use. This excludes all the special equipment (stabilizers, lenses, computers/screens, other switchers, VOD archival, sound equipment, intercom and the rental for all the arena lights/LED screens/sound/generators. Even renting all this stuff, just imagine the expense for a production company to achieve what PGL had done. - 2- Most tournaments had (Starladder/Manila/Epicenter/Galaxy Battles/TS6) but other tournaments (ZOTAC) didn't have the draft overlay. Manila and Epicenter had Layerth running, the other tournaments didn't (though BTS still used Pimp's talent overlay in The Summit). I recall Starladder and Epicenter using the full camera package (Rosh/lane/obs/cour cams), the rest didn't.
- 3- I'm looking at the giant ROSHAN HAS FALLEN overlay from Galaxy Battles and previously, the PGL circlejerking Twitter overlay during the Manila Major. Also, Battleview 1.0
- 4- Because the Lina, destroyer of potato type of effects/skins are slowly becoming worse.
- 5- Looking at you, Reef's Edge
- 6- Especially given how coy/unclear Valve is being with their contribution to the production funding (not just prize-pool funding). Also, considering how there's no reaction to the Monster and Zowie logos for the overlay at the PGL Krakow CSGO Major, Valve might be fine with something similarly unintrusive for Dota.
- 7- I'm surprised Valve hasn't even considered soliciting Pimp at all for production features. If Valve can hire a statsman, why not an obs guy?
