Dota 2 - Announcing TI7 Side Shop & Reddit Meetup

Announcing TI7 Side Shop & Reddit Meetup

Posted: 24 Jul 2017 07:19 PM PDT

Hey Now,

We're just a few weeks away from the main event of The International 2017, and we have been crafting up some fun activities for those of you who will be attending TI this year.

Side Shop

If you have ever attended a TI, you know that the largest draw outside of the games is the Secret Shop. Every year, oodles of plushies, shirts, collectibles, and gear get gobbled up by attendees. We feel that, while great, the Secret Shop has created an uneven balance in the shopkeeper world. The brave side-shopkeepers risking their lives in the safe lane have gone under appreciated for too long...

This is why we are bringing the Side Shop to the TI lawn this year. Instead of long lines and high prices, the Side Shop will stick to it's roots of providing easy access to free TI swag. For one day during midweek, we will be outside Key Arena with a plethora of pay-what-you-want swag. Arcana campaign pins, tattoos, bags, Moonduck swag, Dotabuff codes, and Steelseries gear will be out on the table for the taking. While there is no base price, we do encourage a small donation. All proceeds will be going to the Team Freedom eSports Foundation. Keep an eye out on the eSports Foundation Twitter page for their t-shirt giveaways on Friday. Shoutout to all of these cool people and the talented artists who are making this possible =]

If you are an artist, African prince, or just your average meme extraordinaire and would like to aid the cause, please post below or drop either me or /u/coronaria a PM. Any contribution is supah welcome.

Reddit Meetup

Much like last year we are hosting another /r/dota2 meet-up! The good news is that we have coordinated with Gameworks so that they will staff up for the evening and provide us with more space. This will (fingers crossed) prevent us from having long lines for drinks like last year. We hope to see all yo pretty faces and mingle. Here are the deets:

  • Day: Thursday August 10th
  • Time: Post final series (~7:30pm ish)
  • Location: Gameworks
  • Attire: Dota-casual

If you're not going to be at TI this year check out the Pubstomp Database to go make friends and watch dota much closer to home!

FAQs

Why Gameworks?

  • We have worked out an arrangement where they properly staff themselves, and it's the only place super large that we don't have to pay a deposit for.

Why no barcrawl?

  • They're a tad harder to organize, and we do not wish to step on anyone else's TI plans. With that said, if you live in Seattle and are interested in planning one, we are still open to making it happen.

But Thursday means people won't be eliminated and I just want to brush shoulders with cool pros?

  • True. Maybe we can bug Grant to come. I hear he has nothing going on.

Wait, so you're giving away free shit at TI and taking money for charity?

  • Yes. We thought it would be a fun way to get people some goodies and support a great cause. Here's hoping it's not just a big bust. It's coming out of our pockets and a bit like a proof-of-concept. Swag will be in-person only, sorry I can't send ya all the [SHITPOST] themed swag.

Saving money at TI, some advice from me who went last year

Posted: 25 Jul 2017 02:18 AM PDT

First off these are advices if you're looking to SAVE. MONEY. If you're looking to have an amazing time and spend money, go to another thread.

1) ORCA. CARD. Don't pay for a single uber or taxi or lyft, they're your death sentence. Paid nearly 100$ for ubers before I found out about ORCA CARD. Any station or P&R will have machines that will print you an orca card in exchange for cash, and its usable on any bus.

2) ONE STOP AWAY APP. This app is like google maps but designed specifically for seattle. It's so lit. It'll help you find your way so easily.

3) DON'T EAT THE VENUE FOOD. I blew through 200$ in food in my first 5 days mostly because I am retarded. The arena prices for monster and redbull is like 6-8$, and all food prices are retarded. It can be like 15$ for fries and 5 chicken tenders. IF YOU ARE GOING TO EAT THE FOOD, the best buy in terms of quality x quantity / price is the Nachos. But they are still retardedly overprices. Believe its like 7.50 or something for a typical sporting event thing of nachos. Everything else is retarded and it's all low quality especially the pizza.

4) JUST BRING FOOD IN, BUT KEEP IT WRAPPED. I brought shit in like entire bags of chips and sodas and even whole subs. As long as its wrapped and in a bag, they didn't give a shit.

5) BRING A CELLPHONE CHARGER TO THE VENUE. There's these little exits in the venue, you'll know what I mean when you get there, that are like rooms that serve as bars sometimes (not during TI). There are a shit ton of outlets all over the walls there. You do not want your phone to die and then rely on calling cab with changephone if you are far away or some shit.

6) SAFEWAY is literally 5 mins away from the venue walking, or less. GO THERE for your food. Cheapest food in the area and I personally like their subs so fuckit. GET A WELLNESS CARD and get some deals on shit.

7) NEVER GIVE ANYTHING TO A HOMELESS PERSON. First off touching or going near a homeless person is just asking to get attacked. I know that offends a few people or whatever but I live in Baltimore and homeless people are not to be trusted. Sorry. Dog eat dog world. There are simply too many and once they recognize you it becomes dangerous to revisit that area. Not specifically financial advice but just trust me.

8) BANKS DONT TAKE FUCKING DISCOVER HERE. NOONES HEARD OF DISCOVER OR PNC IN FUCKING SEATTLE. Don't know why but my only two bank accs last year were discover and PNC and half the places took only one or the other, and the banks I went to took neither (rofl). If you go to PNC there is no pnc bank in 1000 mile radius. Make sure all bank issues (withdraw etc) are done before you get there.

9) DONT BUY WATER ANYWHERE. The venue water fountains are actually quite nice in terms of water quality. As long as you're not homophobic they're great. They make you empty drinks entering the venue otherwise they're lax about security. They do a quick check of your bag (and never cared about all my fat ass food in the bag) and then let you go, but you must empty drinks. Fill water inside.

10) FOOD TRUCKS ARE TRASH. Food is trash, they are scams imo, everything is 6-15$ for 5$ worth of food, standing in line in heat is a nightmare, don't waste ur time. Walk to a safeway or fast food restaurant if you really want to, and buy something made in a room that isn't 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

11) DONT BUY ANY FUCKEN RAP CDS ON THE STREET IDIOTS THEY SUCK

Reminder that spectating games is broken since BOSTON MAJOR — only one week to TI7 left

Posted: 25 Jul 2017 10:57 AM PDT

Spectating live games get stuck in Loading Screen and then "Disconnected from server" error message pops up — that's kinda fresh bug that exists for about 2 months

Illusions lags exist at least since Boston Major (probably since Source 2.0), here are some fresh examples:

Dreamleague: AM Manta + Terrorblade

TI7 qualifiers: Dark Seer alone, you can see even casters have lags sometimes, usually only DotaTV spectators experience it

Reminder to everyone to actually VOTE for the short film contest instead of enjoying the videos and moving on.

Posted: 24 Jul 2017 08:37 PM PDT

I'm saying this because I'm guilty of it too and I don't doubt that there are many others who watch but don't vote. There have been so many incredible short films this year and I don't want to see the hard work of a really well-made short film go to waste because the creator didn't advertise their film enough to gain popularity (that doesn't mean don't vote for the popular ones, of course). Please remember to show your appreciation for all of these amazing contributions to the Dota community!

Welcome to The International 2017, here are the dos and don'ts, to keep you out of trouble!

Posted: 24 Jul 2017 05:35 PM PDT

Welcome to The International (201)7

So, TI7 begins at Key Arena in just two weeks time. Like last year I'm here to give you a few reminders about the dos and don'ts of the Key. Bear with me here, as I won't have full details on prohibited items or policies until day one of Midweek (August 7th). However, here's what we do know.

The Key Arena.

Entrances will be open on both sides of the Key Arena, at the West Doors (facing 1st and Harrison) and East Doors (facing Fischer Lawn). Other exits will be utilized in the event of an Emergency. The Northwest Upper Concourse doors should be open, but may end up being used for the virtual autograph and player meet section, as it was last year. Please, do not attempt to enter through any doors that are not entrance doors.

When you arrive, be sure to have any bags, purses, backpacks, stashes (ho ho, a joke) open and ready to be searched. Take everything out of your pockets, and ready yourself for a metal detector search. Backpacks and bags do have size limits (this may change, and will be updated come day one), so don't bring camping size backpacks or duffle bags. If you're cosplaying, please come already in costume, as we do not have any changing locations other than our bathrooms which are extremely small.

Fischer Lawn

If you're attending TI7, and you're without a pass for the midweek or finals, then you can watch the games in GLORIOUS HIGH DEFINITION on our jumbotrons that will be set up on Fischer Lawn. There will be security details patrolling the screens to ensure a lack of fiddling, diddling, and riddle diddles. So, DON'T. TOUCH. THE EQUIPMENT.

Casters or analysts may also come out to sit in front of the jumbos as they did last year. They don't like to be heckled, much less touched. So, DON'T. TOUCH. THE TALENT.

Depending on how Valve and WLF decide to run the Secret Shop this year, the Secret Shop may reopen to the public. If not, there will still be pickups available just east of Fischer Lawn at the Fischer Warehouse. Make sure you've already made your order, and have receipt available. Though, WLF reps will have all the instructions for claim ready when SS reopens.

Staff Pro, Seattle Center and Key Arena employees.

So, I am a member of Staff Pro (the event staffing professionals, what a slogan right), and I want to let you know, each of the employees inside of the Arena or out in Seattle Center are here to assist you. We want to ensure that you have a fantastic experience. With that said, if you have any questions regarding seating inside Key, or issues with your tickets contact any Seattle Center rep in a Green Vest. They'll better assist you in your journey throughout the Key.

See a knucklehead that's causing trouble, maybe had one too many? Contact a Staff Pro representative with a radio. Whether they're in white, red, green or black shirts, each will do their best to clear up the problem. Make sure you have the following when contacting us: The Issue, The Location, The Personal Description. It helps make our job a lot easier.

Food, Beverages, Fun and Games!

So, I'll be honest, food at the Key is sub par, so for your munching experience there should be food trucks on site during TI. Be prepared to pay a pretty penny for decent food and drink, because they're typically required to match wits and prices with the Key. If it shows up again this year, I definitely suggest Hallava Falafel, best freaking truck ever.

Food will more than likely be admitted to the Key, including drinks, however I'll be sure to update you on that as we know more.

Valve should also be bringing some kind of amusement feature, which will be more than likely set up above the Secret Shop, so be prepared for that.

The Key is packed with charging stations for phones, and fountains everywhere to ~restore health and mana~ rehydrate you, and there will also likely be watering holes outside on Fischer Lawn.

If you don't want to try your luck in the Key, and Food Trucks don't seem appealing, make sure to head over to the Seattle Armory, where there are restaurants on the main level like Subway and Mod Pizza.

Current (Known) Prohibited Items

So, don't be bringing:

  • Knives
  • Guns
  • Metal Water Bottles
  • Excessively Large Signs
  • Dangerously Realistic Looking Props
  • Alcohol or Marijuana (it may be legal, but not allowed on Seattle Center grounds)
  • Glass, whether it's bottles or pipes, etc

Ticket Redemption

Didn't get your pass, or are you buying one on the first day? Stop by the East Ticket Office to the left of the East Doors at Key Arena. Be warned, tickets may not be available, so make sure your get your TI tickets by visiting /r/TI7Tickets.

Community Events

If you haven't heard already, members of the DOTA 2 community are hosting meetups around the time of TI7, included here for your knowledge:

/u/Leafeator and friends are hosting this years Reddit Meetup.

  • Day: Thursday August 10th
  • Time: Post final series (~7:30pm ish)
  • Location: Gameworks
  • Attire: Dota-casual

/u/RichterRicochet will be on site every day of The International as a member of the security crew. Make sure to stop by, say hello. (I'll give you updates as to where I am each day.)

In Conclusion

So, I'll definitely have more as TI comes around. This is definitely a great place to start. Please, post all your questions in this thread, and I'll do my damnedest to answer them.

Edit Log (Patchnotes)

25-7-2017: Updated the prohibited items list. Added the Food, Beverages, Fun and Games! section. 7-25-2017: (Yeah, the date style is different, because I updated it during the American day.
