PGL Major Kraków 2017: The 2nd of 2017 and the 11th iteration of the Valve funded CS:GO majors tournament is right around the corner and as fans we can participate in the major HYPE by playing a mini game on the game client itself. The game is Team Pick'Em.

Introduction

Stickers

You will need team stickers to play this game. They can either be the regular stickers, a holo or a foil sticker. You can obtain stickers from the in-game client offers section. This time there is no fantasy Team Game however you can buy the player signature stickers packs for each team or a foil pack for legends or challengers. Once you buy the pack and unpack it a random player signature will be given for your inventory. You can directly buy a particular team's or player's sticker directly from the steam community market. Alternatively, when you try to make a pick for a team the game will pop up a buy menu from where you can buy the stickers from in game or from the market. Once you apply the sticker it is locked until the duration of the group or playoff stage but it is not destroyed once you use it or even if you lose. The sticker will be available in your inventory to use again for the different phase of the game or to apply on a gun later on. 50% of the proceeds from the stickers go to players and organizations.

This time as well we even have sealed graffiti for each teams. You can show off your fandom by using your favorite team spray in game! However please note that the player signatures and the graffiti are not required to play Team Pick'Em.

External Websites and Apps to play Team Pick'Em

Valve has opened up an API that helps in creating external tools that help you to make picks in case you do not have access to the game client itself. If you are on a vacation, at work, traveling or at the major itself, now you don't need to open the game to make the choices. Here is an option that has been presented to the subreddit in the past.

How to play Team Pick'Em

The objective for playing Team Pick'Em is to predict which teams will go through the Swiss system and how the playoff bracket will work out according to you. By picking correct teams on each phase you will earn points that add up at the end of games for that phase. This time there are only 2 chances allotted to make picks, once before the Swiss stage and once before the playoffs. So the first 4 days (16th to 19th) worth of choices are to be made at one go and similarly choices for who you think will win the quarters, semis and finals should be made before the quarter-finals begin on Friday and these choices will count for all the next 3 days (21th to 23rd). Yes, you have to guess who wins the quarterfinals and according to your selected teams, pick who will win the semis and who wins the finals. Pretty difficult to get gold this time as well, right?

Group Stage Picks (example)

  • Pick one of the 2 teams you think will go undefeated during the group stage with a 3-0 record.
  • Pick one of the 2 teams you think will be eliminated without winning a game during the group stage with a 0-3 record.
  • Pick 7 other teams you think will go through to the playoffs during the group stage.

Each correct pick is worth 3 points which will count toward the final goal of earning a trophy.

Playoffs Stage Picks (example)

  • Pick the winners of 4 quarterfinal games, each correct pick is worth 12 points
  • Pick the winners from the 2 semifinal games, each correct pick is worth 10 points
  • Pick the winner of the final, the correct pick is worth 7 points.

Once again a reminder, you will only get one chance to pick how the playoff bracket will play out. All 7 picks for the playoffs must be made before the quarterfinal games begin on Friday 21st. Yes, you won't know who qualified for the semis or the finals but you have to guess who will proceed with your acute sense of analysis ;)

There are a total of 102 points that you can earn in these 2 phases, 27 points for the Group Stage and 75 for the Playoffs Stage. At the end of the major you will earn a bronze, silver or a gold Team Pick'Em Trophy if you score 25, 50 and 75 points and above respectively.

Some concluding Notes

Now that you know how to play these games and how the scoring system works, you can discuss what would be the wise choices to these 9 teams! Here is the blog post by Valve regarding this. Please feel free to discuss your analysis and thoughts over here. You can also ask suggestions here if you are not sure who to choose.

I recorded data for every HE Grenade Flusha threw at ESL One Cologne

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 05:50 AM PDT

This data is gathered from all 5 of Flusha's matches at ESL One Cologne 2017

First off apologies I'm not Launders, secondly there is a Youtube video that compliments this post, in which I give examples of each of the 3 nade categories I cover later. I also do analyse on some of the Flusha nades and how he uses them so effectively, so if you feel like looking even closer at this topic check that out after reading this!

Damage Inflicted by Flusha's Grenades

CT Side T Side Combined
Total HE Grenades Thrown 37 17 54
Total Damage Inficted 639 HP 53 HP 692 HP
Average Damage per Grenade 17.27 HP 3.12 HP 12.81 HP

Frequency at which Flusha Throws a HE Grenade

CT Side T Side Overall
Total Rounds Played 59 59 118
% of Rounds Flusha Throws a HE 62.71% 28.81% 45.76%

It's very obvious that Grenades were much more impactful on the CT side dealing over 5.5x more damage per use than on the T side. Flusha knows this and it is reflected in his frequency of Grenade usage being more than double on the CT side. This isn't because he was dying before using his Nade, he far more frequently would opt for 2x Flash on the T side whereas on the CT side he would almost always purchase 1x HE & 1x Flash. I don't have data for this you'll just have to trust me :)

For the rest of this post I will be talking ONLY about CT nade usage as it is clearly much more impactful than on the T side. One thing I will say about Flusha's T side nades is they are often just thrown at location where CT's could potentially be holding without any actual info obtained by him or his team, with 12 of those 17 (70%) T side throws being just 'guesses' on the CT teams location.

For Further Analysis I also broken down his throws into 3 categories

Guesses – As far as I can tell no info was obtained by Fnatic on the other teams location when the HE was thrown. They were of course thrown at positions where the other team could be at that time if they were setting up for a certain push. But as the name suggest they were grenades thrown more in hope.

Prenade –A grenade thrown early in the round purely on timing to potentially punish the other team for peeking or pushing early in the round eg. Awper peeking T main on Train at the start of round

Infomation Based – Grenades thrown after Information is obtained on the location of the Terrorists, either by Flusha himself or from teammates.

Damage breakdown for each reason for Grenade Throw

Reason for Throw Total Throws Total Damage Average Damage per Throw Connection Rate (atleast one opponent hit) Kills
Guesses 14 48 HP 3.43 HP 2/14 or 14% 0
Prenade 7 112 HP 16 HP 5/7 or 71% 1
Information Based 16 479 HP 29.94 HP 12/16 or 75% 3

Flusha never forces or overextends on grenade throws, but as shown in the reddit post about utility wasted he very rarely dies with much utility left on him. I go more in depth in the Youtube Video with examples, but the basic idea is that flusha usually makes his first point of contact with the other team an information peek or jumpspot rather than holding the angle for a gun battle (not an uncommon approach at high level play as information is a huge part of the battle). After he gets this info he then falls back to a safe angle to usually nade the spot he saw or predicts the other player(s) to move. In a situation where he is moving (rotating) to help out a teammate he will nade based on the information received before engaging in a gun battle on most occasions.

A Quick Summary

If you aren't going to prenade something best not to pull that pin until you get some information about the other teams whereabouts. Of course you can get lucky and it's better to toss that grenade at a hunch rather than die with it on your body but if you can find a way to position yourself like flusha does and get that nade off after gathering the info you can snag yourself quite a bit of nice bonus damage. Telling you how to position yourself like Flusha in words is very difficult so again ill plug my Youtube Video but even better than that is watch a POV of Flusha play. Watching the Flusha POVs not only will you see his positioning and when he decides to throw his grenades but you'll also get to see where and at what times he is throwing those juicy prenades.

Unfortunately Fnatic only played 5 maps at Cologne with Mirage being played 3 times, Overpass and Train once each. One of the mirage matches vs SK Flusha only used two grenades though as they were force buying a lot due to SK's dominance (Fnatic won just 1 CT round). Due to the limited matches there is of course going to be outliers in the data I have presented that wouldn't exist if say I analysed every Flusha demo for 2017. This is the reason I did not do a map by map breakdown. I don't think the 71% connection rate on Prenades would carry over a larger sample size. However due to the way he gathers information I do believe after watching these demos that Flusha would continue the high connection and damage rates on 'info' grenades over a large sample though.

This is my first post like this so feedback about anything would be great!

Here are all my scribblings where I wrote down each round how much damage Flusha's grenade did, how many people it hit and what the reason was for him throwing it, etc.

PGL Major Krakow Showmatch - Vote who you want to see play!

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 03:31 PM PDT

Hello everyone,

As you probably noticed in the schedule for the last day of the Major, before the Grand Final is played on the Tauron Arena stage we will have a showmatch. This epic battle will pit members of the talent line-up against each other. The Reddit CS:GO community gets to decide what those team compositions will be!

Below you will find a list of the available casters, analysts and observers. Submit a comment to this thread with the teams that you want to see. Don't worry if you cannot use every name on the list, as every single person of our coverage crew will be involved in the showmatch somehow.

Leave a comment with the two teams you would like to see and we will select the best, most interesting and balanced composition, with the highest potential for memes. The Redditor(s) with the winning suggestion will be highlighted on the stream and live on in glory. If you want you can also explain in your comment WHY you think your suggestion works best.

Showmatch legends

  • Mantrousse
  • YNK
  • Natu
  • Moses
  • Fifflaren
  • HenryG
  • Bardolph
  • DDK
  • Anders
  • Sapphire
  • Prius
  • Izak

PS: we will need two teams of 5 players each. Please do not be vague. Like former pros vs the rest. :)
