[News] Another step closer to more new portals & pokéstops: Niantic opens Portal Recon to all level 15 Agents + statistics on portals analyzed

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 03:05 PM PDT

Agents,

We are thrilled to let everyone know that we will be extending access to Operation Portal Recon to any Agents that are level 15. We are also proud to unveil the design of the tiered medals that can be earned based on the number of quality Portal evaluations conducted by an Agent. This medal will demonstrate your commitment to helping us improve the Portal Network and everyone's Ingress experience. Specific details about the tiered medals will be unveiled soon.

We want to offer special thanks to all of the beta testers and level 16 Agents who analyzed Portal candidates over the last several weeks. There are now 4.5m candidates remaining to be analyzed in Operation Portal Recon and to date, you have been responsible for:

  • 1.9m Candidates Analyzed
  • 432k Portals rejected
  • 182k New Portals introduced to the Portal network.

source

Over the past few months Niantic has been beta testing Portal Recon, a tool that (as of now) allows any experienced (read max level) Ingress Agent to review submitted portal candidates in an area approx 300km around them. A machine learning algorithm then accumulates these reviews and decides whether or not a candidate is a valid portal.

So far only L8+ Agents in Brazil & S-Korea are able to submit new candidates (because the reviewers exhausted the pool) with no word on when others groups (Agents in other countries or Trainers anywhere) will regain this ability1.

It seems that the new portals are ported to Pokémon GO on Tuesday evening GMT.

1 : In early 2015 portal submission was shut down thanks to all the coal clogging up the pipes

But why can't trainers submit and review points of interest?

Well ... most likely logistics. There's around 10M Agents and 65M Trainers. If Niantic created a pokémon themed version of OPR, we'd flood their servers and probably throw the algorithms out of whack.

And now for my personal opinion, hopes and speculation:

  • With the increased number of Agents, the backlog will melt away in the coming months.

  • As reviewers will be exhaust the queue near them, Niantic will enable more players to submit new candidates

  • Warning this one is very, very much personal hope & speculation: the camera in a trainer's bag will at some point allow us to submit our own candidates and not depend on Agents' good will. There's also the fact that Agents in the past have submitted candidates of questionable quality (see Portal Coal for more on that). To stop a flood of troll submissions, it seems like Niantic wants to start with the players that have been with them for many years.

Final word of advice: rejoice & party tonight, as of tomorrow start researching points of interest that correspond to the candidate criteria

[Story] Happy Old Man

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 02:47 PM PDT

I was sitting in my favorite coffee shop today when an elderly man came in. He looked like he had been walking all day; dirty shoes and a pretty full backpack on. He was also completely absorbed in his phone, smiling and sliding his thumb up the screen... Curiosity got the better of me and as he passed me walking towards to register I peeked at his phone as saw pogo pulled up! I'll be the first to admit that I stopped playing a few months ago due to the bugs and battery drain, but it made my heart so happy to see someone his age out and about playing. I've been smiling all day. :)

Hospital Hero

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 10:30 AM PDT

So I'm at the hospital today as my Mum is going in for a pretty serious operation tomorrow. She wanted a tea and some fresh air having got settled so we went outside and I took down the Valor gym outside. Notices there were a few other people fighting the gym at the same time and before I knew it there was a 3-man Instinct gym (myself included).

Turned to see a dude in a Team Instinct t-shirt who I figured is the lvl38 trainer that slapped a massive Blissey at the top of the gym (perfectly apt).

Took a screen-shot of the gym to send to my bro who can't be here today thinking it would cheer him up "We've got Mum's hospital, Blissey is looking over her".

Been spending time with Mum before we get kicked out and this legend has trained the gym up to a level 10 gym over the last hour or so. 3 other Instincts jumped in and four slots left open to others.

To be clear: not pinning my hope for the operation on the holding of this gym, but just nice to have a distraction and something to help my brother smile whilst he's not here.

[PSA] Insect repellents with DEET may dissolve your PoGO+ (x-post)

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 12:05 PM PDT

From /u/illusk on /r/GoPlus:

tl;dr - If you use the GoPlus with bug spray it might melt just a bit. It seems this was because the bug spray included DEET. Pictures at the end of post.

Just wanted to give a quick PSA to all GoPlus users this summer. This weekend I went on a hike with a few friends in a state park. Before I began this adventure I used an aerosol bug spray. I was not wearing the GoPlus while spraying. I rubbed it in per directions and then a few minutes later I put on the GoPlus. I know it was several minutes because I accidentally left it in the car and had to go back and get it.

During our hike I noticed some black marks occurring on the top of my wrist. We had been hiking for several hours though and I thought it must have been some dirt or something. Only later when we went somewhere for lunch did I realize that it was actually the GoPlus that had left the marks.

It seems that the DEET in the bug spray reacted with the plastic and caused it to melt just a bit. This was an 'Outdoors' bug spray with 40% DEET.

Just wanted to let everyone else know so they don't 'melt' their GoPlus like I did.

[Question] Do you keep a living Pokedex?

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 07:00 AM PDT

I like the idea of doing so, but man, this requires quite a bit of inventory space... particularly because I like to keep two of every final evolution, one as a prestiger and one as an attacker. What criteria do you all use to decide how many and what Pokémon to keep?

[Discussion] Niantic should activate all pokestops that are available from Ingress during events.

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 06:22 PM PDT

It's already pretty disgusting that Niantic has the ability to add many more stops that are already set up in ingress. They should at least increase the amount of available stops during special events.

Spoofing/Botting Survey Results: Unchecked Cheating is "Killing the Game"

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 09:26 PM PDT

TLDR: A few weeks ago I posted a survey about how widespread the affects of spoofing and botting are in the game. The survey had 289 responses, from representatives of players from every continent.

The survey results can be found here.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/19vGJaa_SuVUufDEiLYdS2_3e1wXPq_gEvkXd07-jWmY/viewanalytics#responses

My summary and analysis below.

How widespread is spoofing/botting?

  • 73% of respondents said they had observed spoofing and/or botting. A further 15.5% suspected that they had. Only 11.5% of respondents could definitively say that they had never encountered spoofing or botting.

  • Spoofing/botting is having a major effect on gyms. 45% of respondents play in areas where spoofers/botters control the majority of the gyms. Only 12.5% of respondents reported spoofers/botters in control of less than 10% of the gyms they encounter.

How do people "know" a player is a spoofer or botter?

81% of respondents cited gym activity with no other players around as the reason to suspect a player is a spoofer. The second most common reason (52%) was observing players moving between gyms faster than is humanly possible. 48%.6 of respondents cited players having more rare/high IV mons than is possible without cheating as a reason for suspecting a player of spoofing/botting. However - only 9% of respondents cited this as the sole reason.

Blissey is a Spoofer/Botter's signature mon

When asked to pick the three most common mons left by spoofers/botters in the gym, 83.9% of respondents cited Blissey. Dragonite (81%) and Tyranitar (61.7%) were not far behind.

Reporting players to Niantic for cheating has been ineffective

Only 37% of respondents have reported players to Niantic for spoofing or botting. Of respondents who made reports, only 12% have seen any of the accounts they reported banned.

What Respondents said about spoofing/botting - it's "Killing the Game"

The overwhelming repeated comment comment was that spoofing and botting is "killing the game". Some other variations of this comment included:

Destroys gameplay for everyone even the spoofer themselves

It's ruined the game for playing with my family (little brother and sisters).

Some respondents were philosophical and tried to stay positive:

Spoofing is hard, because it can be done without leaving in-game evidence of doing it. Botting is easier, because it is very difficult to get botting done right. Only poorly executed spoofing/botting leave in-game evidence however, so this problem will never go away. The only option to be competitive is to embrace it as a part of the game and do it too.

Another alternative perspective:

Everyone needs to come to terms with the fact that the rules of the game are not what's explicitly stated by Niantic, but in fact what rules are enforced. Niantic should as far as possible avoid making rules that it cannot enforce. Rule making and design of the IT required to enforce them should go hand in hand.

Disclaimer on the Survey's Lack of Scientificness

This is not a scientific study, so take these results with half a cup of salt. Nevertheless the response was overwhelming. Unchecked spoofing and botting has ruined the game for a large portion of Pokemon Go's player base.

My final thoughts - The Game Needs Moderation

With the gym rework now imminent, in a way these survey results are moot. But whatever Niantic's gym rework is, you can be sure that unless they figure out a way to rein in cheating, the cheaters will soon find new ways to cheat, and the new gym meta will end the same way.

One of Niantic's problems is that they are a small company with a very large player base, so do not have the resources to follow up on the all the reports they get of cheating. My opinion (as a machine learning researcher) is that the solution is not to solely rely on more automated methods of detecting cheating (which are very hard to get right without false positives), but to make use of the community itself. (This is inspired by /u/reneritchie's post from a month ago: https://np.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/6a197y/a_vicious_spoofermultiaccountershaver_cycle_or/?st=j3v1sre2&sh=66fee87c)

Introduce moderators who are picked from the community. In every community, the players know who the cheaters are. Find a way of picking a balanced group of moderators in each community, make sure all teams are represented. Let Niantic set what the rules are, and let the moderators follow up on the reports of cheating. If the moderators agree there is evidence a player has been cheating, Niantic should ban the player. If players know reports of cheating will be followed up on, I think very soon the cheating will stop.

The BEST event thing was 6hr Lures.

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:52 PM PDT

As far as incentives to play and spend $$ go -- the 6hr Lures were brilliant.

The reduced distances for candies from buddys comes second.

We need an Incubator-based incentive at some point....either make them droppable from stops for an event or speed up the hatching process.

What's the most you've ever paid (implicitly) for a Pokemon?

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 03:21 AM PDT

A friend from the LondonPogo Discord just mentioned that on his way to a 100% Larvitar he missed, he turned right at a left-only junction and he now has to pay a £130 fine. Hearing more stories about paying £150 for a locksmith when forgetting keys for a 100% Tangela and the infamous helicopter ride for a fled Lapras, what's the most you've ever had to pay for a Pokemon? An Uber, a penalty, a holiday?

Personally I'm a free to play player so I try to spend as little money as possible, but I accidentally spent £1.60 to get out of a station to catch a Pineco on day 2 of Gen 2, still regret it as I had no idea it'd be the bane of 10k eggs... How about you? :)

Quick help question - accidental new account

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 10:17 PM PDT

Both my phone and Pokémon Go updated recently, and one or the other logged me out of the account. When I logged back in, it asked me to sign in, and I clicked the one email listed there without really looking. The trouble is, that wasn't the email with my regular account - it must have pulled a different email address from somewhere on my phone, and it started me over. Now I'm in the tutorial and being asked to make a new username and all. I don't see a log out option yet. Is there a way to log out and log back in with my correct email without having to completely set up this second accidental account?

Is the Plus worth getting?

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 07:55 AM PDT

I'm sure plenty of people ask this, but here's my POGO background. I play everyday but I only make it a point to go out (besides the park up the street) and walk longer distances like once a week. However, I do enjoy jogging so would that be a good way to play and not have to take my eye off the sidewalk?
