May the 4th be with you, and may April's tier list be with you as well!

I think school's affecting us all, don't be too hard on how late I am plz :(

As always:

S Tiers are best, most viable characters in the game. "The Meta," if you will. They are always able to place high at tournaments, and their strengths tend to outweigh their weaknesses considerably.

A (A+/A/A-) Tiers are characters who don't define the meta, but are definitely viable and able to compete. They may possess a few noticeable flaws or lack very big strengths, but they are able to be worked around. Use of these characters will never hold the player back.

B (B+/B/B-) Tiers are characters who are able to do very well in tournament, but are held back from consistently placing high. This can be because of several flaws, very large flaws, bad match-ups, or other reasons. However, they are definitely still threats.

C (C+/C/C-) Tiers are characters who are really only good for situational or limited use. They have potential, but this potential is limited by their struggle against popular characters in the meta. They can be very useful in certain match-ups.

D Tiers are characters who are not tournament viable in any sense. They are littered with too many weaknesses to even have occasional use as a pocket. A player would be severely limited by these characters.

In terms of Miis, they are ranked with both their default and custom movesets. Default Miis are marked with a "1111," while freed custom moveset Miis are not marked. Both default and custom moveset Miis are average (guest) size and do not have any custom equipment.

And with that out of the way, here's monthly tier list!

Interesting things to note:

  • Lucina saw the greatest rise by far, moving up 7 spots into A- and landing a Top 15 spot.

  • Mega Man took the blow for Lucina, falling out of both A- Tier and Top 20.

  • Along with Mega Man, Link and Olimar also saw drops of the same size, both dropping 4 spots and Link dropping out of B Tier.

  • Charizard, for the first time possibly ever (or at least in a very long time), rose out of the C Tiers completely, landing a spot at the very end of B-.

  • Pac-Man saw the second biggest rise. Thank you, /u/DReager1

With that out of the way, you know what time it is...

"Funsie" Question Time!

This time around, the questions asked were all about character patches! Who was buffed the most, who was nerfed the most, who you would personally buff/nerf, the whole 9 yards.

First off, when asked who was most impacted by buffs the most, over half the respondents said they believed that Mewtwo had been helped the most by buffs. A strong second was Marth, who got over half of the remaining votes. You can definitely see where the masses are coming from; both characters had a fairly weak start and were debatably the worst in the game until buffs came. Now, they're both in contention for Top 10! Other characters mentioned by a few include Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Lucina.

On the other side of the coin, when asked what character was most impacted by nerfs, responses became a lot more varied. Luigi came in 1st with around a fourth of the total votes, with Sheik and Greninja coming in a close second and third (though I'm still not entirely convinced that Greninja was just a meme...). Other popular responses included Zero Suit Samus, Meta Knight, Bayonetta, and Diddy Kong.

In terms of who you guys wanted to change, some characters were definitely more popular than others. The most popular candidate for buffs by far was none other than the Puff (I would link buffpuff.club, but it no longer exists :( ), who 70% of respondents said they would buff. Other popular candidates for buffs include the likes of Ganondorf, Zelda, King Dedede, Falco, and Pac-Man. In terms of nerfs, Bayonetta and Cloud both came in first and second pretty dominantly (cancerous dlc ugh /s), with over 50% of respondents wishing nerfs upon them. Other popular (or should I say, unpopular) picks include the likes of Rosalina & Luma, Diddy Kong, Mario, and Sonic.

As for specific responses to these questions (how would you buff/nerf each marked character?), there would be too much to write out, so I'll link a compilation of all of the responses here. Some responses (the very non-descriptive, basic ones) have been removed. I also got a number of shitpost-y responses, which have been moved to the end of the document.

If you guys want to put any more buffs/nerfs on there or you want to put your username next to your comment (with a little note!), the document has comments turned on! I'll edit in those things when I get to it :)

I feel like a broken record at this point, but Pac-Man is a solid character and is always very underestimated in the tier list. He's at least B tier to be honest. Lets look at the pros and cons here. Pros: Pac's neutral special is one of the most versatile in the game. His dash attack is surprisingly good since he can act out of it almost immediately. Try it out in the training room and you'll be surprised. Up B, side tilt, or just keep on going. His dash attack allows for good mix ups. His recovery is also incredibly hard to gimp or stop as long as you use it well. His down smash lingers quite a while which makes spot dodging it incredibly difficult. Cons: His Grab has no follow ups and back throw doesn't KO for a while. It's also high commitment like ZSS so only grab from close up. Frame Data. Pac just doesn't have a lot of results, but those will come soon. Once I'm done with school and have more time on my hands...prepare for the Pac-Man onslaught! I won't say that he's S tier or even A tier, but I don't see how he's B tier. He's essentially got just as many options to work with as Sonic. He has even to winning matchups on just about every high tier character as well. Imo, Pac-Man shuts Diddy Kong down fairly well. Good luck landing any bananna to up smash combos when the Hydrant is on the field and he can edge guard Diddy pretty well with bair and the hydrant.

I'll start this with ZeRo owes me nothing. He doesn't owe any of us anything. He's a professional gamer/Youtube video creator. With that being said I got into competitive smash 4 after watching the invitational. Afterwards I watched all the top players videos. Zero, Dabuz, Nairo, Ally, Abadango, Larry Lurr, Mr.R, 6wx ALL OF THEM. After watching countless videos of all the top players I continued to be drawn more and more to ZeRo's. I loved his play style, I loved his low risk high reward tactics. His bread and butter follow ups. I loved how he played. From there I started following the big tournaments. The first Super Major I watched was Big House 5 and that was unfortunate as a ZeRo fan. He ended the year at MLG with a lackluster finish and I began to wonder if I started following ZeRo too late. Then 2016 comes and he has many stellar performances and it seemed to reassure his fans that he still has it. Then about 5-6 tournaments have been infuriating as a ZeRo fan. It started at Get On My Level 2016 where he stubbornly went Diddy vs Ally and got destroyed following a stubborn 3-0 vs Mew2King. Then he went to CEO and same thing. He stubbornly lost to Larry Lurr in losers. Then came Super Smash Con where ZeRo clearly was in a bad matchup vs Ally. You could see Mario could counter everything in the game cam. He took 13th. Following this he got a coach and seemed to be on the right track. Started studying different matchups, practicing more, and he had another great performance at UGC. Well his dedication to practicing against obscure characters lasted all of 1 tournament. Entering Genesis 4 he was up against weird characters nearly all day the first 2 days and surprise surprise he loses extremely early to Duck Hunt Day 2 and then again Day 3 and takes 3rd. Now I'm watching Frostbite and I hear the commentators say "AAAAH LUCARIO IS AT 100% ZERO COULD DIE TO A BACK AIR EVEN THOUGH HE'S AT 40 AHHHH" I see his twitter and he tweeted "Deedy has too many losing matchups". Like I said at the beginning, ZeRo owes me nothing. If he wants to get bad bracket luck at every tournament and not reach his competitive heights ever again that's fine. He's allowed to do that. But when I watch his videos and he constantly says things like "don't worry guys, I'll be back. I was just against a bad bracket" "I had matchup unfamiliarity come on that's why I lost to insert player" I hear him say those things and I get a sliver of hope. Then I watch him and he's fighting Ganondorf and doesn't seem to know the matchup and loses and I get a huge sense of let down and disappointment. Either he should stop saying he'll be back and that he'll be back on top or he should take the low tiers seriously. I don't see Ranai and Larry Lurr losing to Palutena and having to go Falcon at tournaments. Granted I don't think he or any top player is required or should take every tournament extremely serious but he's now either player against unfamiliar matchups, extremely stubbornly, or both at his last 4-5 tournaments, excluding Endgame and Shine and Big House 6 and UGC and PAX and KTAR and Midwest Mayhem and all the 2GG Sagas. I'm just a dumb smash 4 fan who loves watching ZeRo play has become extremely disappointed with who he has to face in bracket.

Character Data Update - Will be published on May 8th.

However, the workload was very large, and I expanded what I'd be doing. As the title suggests, this will be published on May 8th, as I'd rather give myself extra time to add extras and perfect rather than rush things and come up with something mediocre.

Updated list of things:

-A full list (with charts) noting the score of what players contributed to every character in both 2016 and 2017. There will be a shorter-scale version of this for 2015, but the tournament pool will be much smaller.

-Comparison of character statistics between Brawl, Melee, and Smash 4. I will be using Brawl's entire National history period, Melee's history from EVO 2016 forwards, and March 15th 2016 to April 30th 2017 for Smash 4. I'm tempted to do 64 as well.

This portion will likely be in a separate, multiple-Smash games post for the sake of visibility. If I do 64, it will likely be published a few days to a week after the Smash 4 character data post.

-As stated in the first post, I will have the character points per month (through the methodology I link in the above post) compared between months 1-4 of 2017 and the March-December period of 2016.

  1. Rudolph, Shippu, bitou, Zoma, Sobameshi, Sheik, kkp, and Tapioka are all notably absent this tournament.

  2. Despite arguably being top 3 in Japan, Yu was unable to obtain a tournament victory until now, constantly being outshined by aMSa, Rudolph, and Shippu. KSB 2017 marks his first tournament win, pushing him in the running for best in Japan. However, both Shippu and Rudolph were absent this tournament, and Yu managed to avoid aMSa and other potential upsets hidden in Sanne and Nanashi. In order to solidify his argument for Japan's best, he may have to perform just as well this weekend at Japan's Crazy Hand, which will not only feature much of the same players as KSB, but also Rudolph.

  3. KSB is generally known to be as the "EVO of Japan." That being said, all of the matches were Best of 3.

  4. aMSa was unable to defend his title as the winner of KSB 2016, losing to Sanne twice to obtain fourth.

  5. Sanne is one of Japan's more inconsistent players. He is able to net wins against almost all the top players (aMSa, Yu, K.F), but he has also dropped sets against players that you might think would be a tier below him (MOSH, Da-Yoshi, bitou). However, he had an amazing tournament run here by defeating s-royal and Nanashi and double-eliminating aMSa.

  6. Sanne is now the only player in 2017 to have a positive record against aMSa (2-1). aMSa has a positive record over Yu, Rudolph, and Nanashi, and a tied record with Shippu and Gucci. Sanne has historically given aMSa trouble in the past: Sanne would often take aMSa to last game last stock, if not outright beat him.

  7. Though Nanashi was able to defeat one of his demons, K.F, he still had an overall poor performance, losing to Sanne and Da-Yoshi. The latter is a particularly devastating loss as it is possibly his worst defeat in the past three years.

  8. Da-Yoshi has always struggled to appear in the upper echelon of Japan's best in the many years he has played, able to get a few wins here and there against top players, but remained static in the same lower tier for years. KSB 2017 however might signal a turnaround with his first win against powerhouse player Nanashi and his first win against a higher tier floaty.

  9. The wildcard of Japan, Kounotori, showed up in full force by upsetting Gucci and double-eliminating Sanne. He has once again proven he can shake a tournament with his appearance. However, he faces a new problem in Yu, who he is currently winless against.

  10. Gucci obtains a quiet 7th place at this tournament. His loss was against Kountori, marking his second loss against another Falco this year. He dropped a set towards aMSa, evening out their record against each other in 2017. Gucci will have to redeem himself this weekend at Crazy Hand if he is to keep his top 5 player status, but he will face a new threat in Rudolph.

  11. UK's Deathgazer (PR'd 9th) was at this tournament. He received 9th, defeating MOSH and s-royal, and losing two close sets to aMSa (2-1) and Nanashi.

How can I find a controller with good dashback?

My controller lost its potentiometer weirdness and now gives me a poor success rate with dashbacks. I'm not competing but it's very frustrating to attempt a dash back jc grab and have my character stand in place and grab the wrong way.

Is there anywhere I can specifically buy controllers with good dashback? Are certain models of controllers more likely to have it?
