This is an opportunity for the more experienced LoL players here to share some of your wisdom with those with less expertise. This thread will be a weekly safehaven for those "noobish" questions you may have been too scared to ask for fear of downvotes, but also can be a great place for in depth discussion if you so wish. So, don't hold back, get your game related questions ready and post away, and hopefully someone can answer them!

I got on Discord, pretended to be another player in the game, and flamed myself to test MOB MENTALITY in League.

Posted: 01 May 2017 08:08 AM PDT

So I was curious how much other people's opinions can affect YOUR opinion of players in your game.

I was smurfing in ~Gold/Plat, playing as Leona. Someone posted a Discord link, so I thought hey why not and joined up. We got to talking, and when the game started he asked who I was. It was just a split second decision to toy around with him (I was streaming, so entertainment factored in too) and tell him I was Ezreal when I was in fact Leona. In the very first few moments of the game I wanted to plant the idea that Leona (who is actually me) is an awful player. I made just a few comment here and there that she was laning terribly (I wasn't), and she had the wrong runes (I didn't). Just a few well placed insults to sow the idea that Leona = boosted and is holding us down.

From this point forward I basically let Ivern form his own opinion, while only occasionally insulting myself (with which Ivern wholeheartedly agreed with). I remained silent in-chat the entire game, so Leona never chatted in-game once.

So here are a few lovely snippits of what ensued:

Leona (me) gets two first bloods in a teamfight by the dragon. They were 100% necessary to take, as in my adc was 1 auto from dying.

Ivern: "Wow, she stole both of them."

Ivern made multiple remarks about how we had "no frontline". :(

The ACTUAL Ezreal (who Ivern thought was the guy he was on-mic with) was given every single buff. Every single one. This might have happened naturally since Ivern gets free buffs to give away, but it's still interesting.

At one point Leona (me) had 5 kills. Ivern remarks that if those 5 kills weren't stolen from Ezreal that Ezreal would be carrying "even harder than you already are!"

A play goes south, and we all die. Ivern types "fkn leona"

A teamfight goes well -- Ezreal dies but we trade 1 for 4 of the enemy champs. Ivern sounds audibly upset at Leona for not peeling.

Ivern gets caught in the enemy jungle and dies. Ivern blames botlane for not helping him get out. I point out that Leona is in base, having just spawned from an earlier death. Ivern notes that "yeah what's new she's in base"

Several passive aggressive mentions of "what a person" Leona is. "What an individual"

I ask Ivern if Leona is even building correctly. Ivern says no. I was building correctly as far as I know, I have about 2,000 games of Leona. Botlane dies after getting ganked. I ask if that's reportable -- Ivern says he will "definitely be reporting her". (!!!!!!)

There were some other hilarious moments, but these are some of my favorite.

It was very interesting to see just how thoroughly I influenced Ivern's opinion of Leona. I think this is an important social experiment, because you should realize that every seemingly insignificant or little comment you make about your teammates shapes their opinions of each other. Don't point out your teammates mistakes -- try to focus on the positive.

All in all we won the game pretty easily, and Ivern did indeed report me (RIP). I let him in on my secret, that I was actually Leona and he was a really good sport about it and laughed it off and thought it was funny.

**EDIT: Enough people have asked for the video that I feel justified in posting my YouTube channel. I am editing the video currently, and it will be up tomorrow. I will likely start a new thread for it. If the mods want me to take down this edit I will do so, just let me know :)

Hello everyone!

I am Vandiril, many of you seem to know me because of the Youtube vids I make and participation in this subreddit, so I thought it may be nice to do another AMA.

Feel free to ask anything, I'll try to answer it as well as I can.

This is gonna be my 2nd AMA, you can find first one here

TL:DR Ask me anything

Thanks for so many comments, I'll continue to answer them! Didn't expect so much attention here!

mini-update: I tried to request multiplayer practice tool here on Riot boards, but despite getting 2,5k views and 250 upvotes it remained not noticed :(.

PSA: Moving your mouse doesn't change your status from "Away" to "Online" anymore.

Posted: 01 May 2017 09:41 AM PDT

If I see it right the only things switching your status from "Away" to "online" are going into a lobby and switching your Summoner-Icon.

You can now browse the Client, buy stuff in the store and even decline games, without getting pointed out as being at your keyboard.

What I learned after finally reaching Bronze IV

Posted: 01 May 2017 01:47 PM PDT

  • With the right attitude and dedication anything can work (Yasuo ADC main here)

  • Your own team is always your worst enemy.

  • I have to carry my team 9 out of every 10 games.

  • Warning ping your teammate in the split second before they die and then question mark ping 3 times, it will help assert that you could have played it better.

  • Jungle is the role thats decides about victory or loss in most of the games, so they are personally responsible for every one of your deaths.

  • It is better to blame your teammates than to correct your own mistakes, because there's nothing you can do if Rito decides to group you with awful players.

  • Its hard to get rid of tilt once it started. The only way I've found that works is to keep playing games, and disregard everything in your real life until you win one.

  • Don´t throw in the towel too soon, but if any teammate dies twice before 10 minutes, ff at 20 because the enemy is too fed.

  • The mute button sounds like an efficient tool, but you should never use it. If you did use it, the enemy laner could easily have the last word in all chat without you knowing. Make sure to angrily reply to all of their remarks for maximum satisfaction.

  • League is not a game of IFs, as in IF you had better teammates. So try to carry them but if you die twice, it's gg and you might as well feed for the rest of the game.

  • If you aren't using chat to tell the enemy laner why you're better than them, then you're doing it wrong.

  • Being an OTP can be helpful, but don't limit yourself, because tbh any champion is successful in any role (I have a >20% winrate on jungle Sona)

  • A positive voice in champion-select can get you mid, but if they are stubborn you might have to threaten with "mid or feed" to secure your role.

  • Bronze IV isn't a sacred place like many make it out to be, most people are still casuals, looks like I will have to continue carrying.

Changes to Riot API - making everything harder for everyone

Posted: 01 May 2017 03:59 AM PDT

So Riot sent an announcement about API endpoints being deprecated and there are several things I don't understand about their moves.

  1. What hits me most is that stats-v1.3 endpoint is going away and not being replaced because apparently, refreshing these stats after every game was too much for the servers. Well that sucks for several reasons:

    • Now there will be no easy way of knowing how many Penta/Quadra/...kills a person got in a season of ranked games, let alone KDA, Winrate, etc...
    • Let's say I want this info from the current ranked season for one player. Instead of submitting one request to the stats API, an app now has to submit one request to the MATCHV3 API to get a list of games played by that player and then it has to submit N requests for timelines of games, where N is the number of ranked games a player played.
So we are going from one request to (N+1) requests where N can actually be in hundreds. This is 100+ requests for information about ONE PLAYER. How does that even help the servers? You save aggregating data by increasing number of request 100-fold at least? That doesn't make sense to me.
    • And out of all the data that gets transmitted this way, the app uses about 1 % of it, since the rest is meaningless timeline data.
    • Now that the app has this data, it also has to go through ALL the responses and cherry-pick the five stats that it wants. With this, you have to start caching to not hit rate limits, which means a database infrastructure, which means if you're not op.gg or lolking.net, you might as well not try at all. Sad day for small-time developer players.
  2. This seems like a minor point, but if you're removing/changing/deprecating almost all the endpoints, including the way you specify region, why in the hell would you leave league-v2.5 in the old format so apps have to not only migrate, but also keep legacy code around which will change again in a few months? Why not just migrate everything at the same time?

I always thought the API was made for players and players/developers who want to make awesome stuff for the community. Instead, it's "make the API for the current client" and then "by the way, release it to the developers in whatever way the client needs" with apparently no attention to small-time hobby developer players who make the community what it is.

We as developers can't do much, but the players will feel it when their favorite websites will start removing functionality. I am disappointed in you Riot.

(All this is written from the point of view of my small project lolsigs.com with ~800 daily users, which could be an edge case. In any case, I think projects like this are important and Riot should try to make it easier for them to exist and not harder.)

TL;DR; upon request: Riot (incompletely) changed their API specification because of new client and stopped aggregating statistics, forcing each developer to do it instead, which disfavors small-time developers and is going to hurt community in the long run.

What i learned after finally reaching Diamond V.

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 10:16 PM PDT

  • With the right attitude and dedication anything can work (Nunu top main here)

  • Sometimes your worst enemy is your own team.

  • Toxicity is a way of life in High Plat/ Low Dia.

  • When nobody talks in chat, you will likely win the game.

  • Jungle is the role thats decides about victory or loss in most of the games.

  • Diamond isn´t a sacred place like many make it out to be, most people in Dia are still casuals, who are just a little better.

  • You can find the same stereotypical kind of players in every elo.

  • Gold was the best elo regarding chilled teammates and the most pleasent atmosphere.

  • It is better to correct your own mistakes, because even if your teammates lose you one game, you dont get better by just praying to the Rito gods for " better teammates."

  • Its hard to get rid of tilt once it started. Sometimes its better to just do something else to stop thinking too much about the game

  • Don´t throw in the towel too soon, but respect the opinion others voice.

  • Try to work with your team not against it.

  • The mute button can be an efficient tool, to avoid spending too much time trying to figure out, whether the enemy laner wishing you cancer is a result out of spite or just his way of voicing his satisfaction.

  • League is not a game of IFs, try to focus on what the game looks like at the current situation. Maybe yasuo got camped and is 0/6 but flaming doesn´t increase your odds of winning, and it is not helpful in finding possibilities to turn the tides of the battle.

  • If you use your chat, use it efficiently.

  • We judge others by their action not their intention, so if others point out your mistakes, just admit fault and you will notice many people are much more forgiving then expected.

  • Being an OTP can be helpful, but makes you pretty depending on it to be succesfull.

  • A positive voice in champion-select can get you mid, Mid or feed only gets you reports.

  • Not everything what shines is gold, just because you got destroyed by a player you consider "bad" doesn´t mean you are worse in general, just that he was better in that one game.

  • I am still and will be a boosted Animal. It is much easier to relax and play the game if you accept the truth.

Whats with people saying diamond V is bad?

Posted: 01 May 2017 05:26 AM PDT

Diamond V is still better than 99% of playerbase according to op.gg, why does LoL community call it bad? It's easy to look at even challenger players playing badly and say ''hurr durr look at these mistakes, bronze player much'' but does that make the challenger player bad when hes still in top 0.1% or whatever it is

LGD owner talking about franchising On Pyl's stream

Posted: 01 May 2017 03:39 AM PDT

https://twitter.com/Tuwan_Esports/status/858979012378480640

Home base we aren't sure yet, we already applied, the plan is to locate in Hangzhou. Then EDG takes Guangzhou, Snake takes Suzhou, OMG takes Chengdu. We already knew about the franchising, so this avoiding relegation is very important. I think this will spread other regions, it was supposed to initiate at the same time in all the regions. I think it was supposed to be like this, to think all the time and effort you poured into it, then get relegated. This year our expense is at 8 figures, if we get relegated, then it all goes to waste. I think under the new rule, it will be more competitive among the league, we can finally have the effort to develop young talent without worrying relegation."
