Hearthstone - Tavern Hero Update: Blizzard Comes Through in the Clutch!!

Tavern Hero Update: Blizzard Comes Through in the Clutch!!

Posted: 04 May 2017 09:00 PM PDT

Yesterday I made a post sharing the story of how my Tavern Hero Qualifier win was not properly recorded. Well, that post got a ton of attention, and reddit won't let me update the title of the post, so I decided to make this one to let people know that Blizzard sorted it out and is letting me play!

Words can't describe how relieved and pumped that I am, but I just wanted to make sure they got credit for making right an issue that wasn't their fault in the first place. Huge respect to Blizzard on this one, as always, your customer service is top notch!

The full update is in my original post if you want to see the whole story.

And, of course, another huge thanks to this entire subreddit for all of the advice and support I got on this whole thing!

And, because a few have asked, my Battle Tag name is Kr0ozin, although as far as I'm aware, this isn't being streamed. I guess I need to invest in some reddit swag!

Edit: Also huge thanks to whoever just gave me reddit Gold! Feeling the love today <3

Edit 2: If you're interested in following along, you can see the whole event here. It might not be a ton of fun to follow since it isn't being streamed and you can't spectate, but hey if I've come this far I might as well share in the ride!

China announces Hearthstone card pack rarity odds

Posted: 05 May 2017 01:10 AM PDT

Blizzard China's (Chinese) link is here: http://hs.blizzard.cn/articles/20/9546

The link is dated 2 April, but it's not clear whether it was backdated or that they actually posted it then but everyone missed it.

UTC 0930 Edit: They've edited the statement regarding RARE cards, as bolded and in italics below.

Translation

In adherence to new laws, Hearthstone is hereby declaring the probabilities of getting specific card rarities from packs, with details as below.

Note: Each Hearthstone pack contains cards of 4 different rarities.

  • RARE - At least 1 rare or better in each pack

  • EPIC - Average of 1 every 5 packs

  • LEGENDARY - Average of 1 every 20 packs

In addition, please note that as players open more packs, the actual probability of opening cards of a higher quality increases in tandem. [my note: for those asking for clarification, this is very likely referring to the pity timer]

Original Text

  • In my opinion, the last line is acknowledgement of the pity timer, but it's not 100% definitive. The literal meaning is closer to "actual odds of getting better quality cards will increase in tandem as players open more packs", but it's basically the same as what I wrote above.

  • The existence of a pity timer has been (essentially) acknowledged by the team.

  • The reason I think the link was either backdated or not released until now is that everyone just noticed it even though it's dated 2 April, and all comments are from today (starting from about an hour ago). It is also extremely unlikely that an article such as this one would be missed by everyone visiting the site since that date until now, considering it was just before Un'Goro's release. In any case, some of you seem to think it's a big deal but I don't think there's anything sinister or inappropriate about this particular backdating.

  • On a personal note, I'm not sure what everyone was expecting. They're not required to declare anything more than this I believe, and even if they did announce probabilities for golden cards, it would be the same as what we already know as well.

Edit: I've been touching up some of the translation, and may continue to do so.

The Ranked Floors are truly the best feature that Blizzard made for Ranked mode.

Posted: 05 May 2017 02:19 AM PDT

Ever since they implemented the Ranked Floor system, I believe everybody is a lot more motivated to climb further into higher ranks. Even a casual player myself had the motivation to climb from 17 to rank 8 last season. Props to Blizz for making these ranked floors for us casual players to get motivated and reaching milestones while need not to worry about dropping ranks.

My Dad is the exact market blizzard is aiming for

Posted: 05 May 2017 07:06 AM PDT

Hey guys,

I know there's constant talk here about the game not being very competitive friendly because Blizzard wants to keep it simple for casuals. I used to think that theory was wrong, but after my Dad decided to play hearthstone (since he always saw me playing it on my phone), I began to realize it was actually true. Here are some things my dad (as a completely casual player) does on a daily basis:

  • He does not netdeck. He puts random ass cards into his deck even after asking me to make him a good one
  • He gets fed up after the occasional losing streak and will buy a pack or two
  • He fucking LOVES the random RNG. I actually explained to him how most competitive players would like it to be mostly removed from the game, and his response was "why? It's so cool and fun when that shit happens".
  • He has never, and probably will never play ranked
  • He constantly forgets to attack with minions that are on the board, forgets to hero power with extra mana, etc.
  • He doesn't actually improve or make any attempt to improve. It's just a 5 - 10 minute game to play on the shitter
  • He's actually afraid to buy an adventure because he's not good enough to beat the computer so he buys packs instead
  • He only plays on mobile. This is a major point because I believe he thinks it is just a mobile game

This is who Blizzard mostly wants to cater to. Over the course of 6 - 12 months they will probably siphon out a reasonable chunk of money from my Dad in packs. He will get bored and move on, but the cycle will continue with another casual player just like him. We make jokes about new features being confusing for new players, but honestly? If any more were added they could genuinely confuse my Dad. He still doesn't understand tavern brawl, and it's been months. He's only 52, so he is by no means an [[Ancient of Lore]] or anything. I offer my help and advice pretty consistently to try and help him get better, but he just doesn't really want it. He just wants to play and experiment on his own, being under average forever. The weird thing is...he seems to enjoy the game much more than me or most people on /r/hearthstone.

Ninja edit: It is definitely cool that I have a Dad who plays Hearthstone, and I am not just trying to call him bad in this post. I just wanted to share the interesting aspect of a casual who plays with you all.

Smugglers run makes Prince Malchezar visible if buffed

Posted: 05 May 2017 02:41 AM PDT

I was playing versus a rather odd deck which had paladin buffs and Prince Malchezar. I noticed I could see Prince Malchezar when he played smugglers run

http://imgur.com/a/uevaN

This must be a bug right? I'm guessing it has something to do with it showing Prince Malchezar in the start of the game, then forgetting to "hide him" again. If that makes any sense

Every class has finally found its own identity in Un'Goro

Posted: 05 May 2017 06:04 AM PDT

The fact that this is probably the best meta we've ever had hid one fact from us: every class has found its own identity. Let's review them:

  • Mage: The identity of the class was pretty much set from the classic days: a combination of ice and fire to stall and burn your opponent, with some decks having more freeze and others more burn. However, Un'Goro finally made viable a parallel theme : secrets.

  • Priest: Priest has finally achieved the wackyness we were promised: Either they search into their deck for copies of their own spells to beat you, or they search in your own deck. The class also ckeeps playing with dragons and RenoHighlander decks. Oh, and flipping PURIFY. Unicorn priest yet to be found (the class won't probably achieve top-tier level) but it has definitely found a fun identity.

  • Warrior: Besides the clear pirate theme, the class has finally found its promised wonderland: Taunt City. With the loss of justicar, Garrosh swapped ironmade armor for a minionmade one. Its win condition also changed from random legendary dudes to random legendary hero power.

  • Druid: Just like mage, Druid will always have one prevalent theme: Ramp (be it combined with gigantic minions or with an army of boredom). Nonetheless, Un'Goro introduced yet another way to interact with mana, providing a continuity to the token archetype.

  • Rogue: Miracoli will probably remain in the game until Gadjetzan gets tired of always finding the best deals for you just to be obliterated the turn after and goes on vacation to the Hall of Fame. Un'Goro introduced yet another fun to play, uninteractive archetype: Crystal Rogue. The deck bounces and rebounces so many times that you don't even know what hit you. Well, you do, but you don't want to admit to yourself that you got boar controlled for 20 damage to your face.

  • Shaman: Thrall, the Elemental Warlord finally got tired of hitting your face with its mighty hammer and finally embraced its true nature: the control of Elementals, with Kalimos leading them to relevance.

  • Paladin: Aggro, midrange and Control: the class has it all. Add some murlocs and some Curators and you've got the class identity: it embraces almost every archetype and welcomes most tribes, just what you'd expect from a paladin.

  • Hunter: There isn't much to be said about hunter, but the identity is pretty well set: SMOrc.

  • Warlock: Gul'dan has finally stopped playing games with little fellas and wombo combos and fully embraced its true core: Darkness.

Not sure if these are allowed here but I've played since beta and this is hands down the best pack I've ever opened.
